Riding your bike through the deserted streets of downtown Tampa on a Sunday morning, and then winding up at Cafe Hey for a large coffee and an unbelievably reasonably priced A-to-Z Sandwich. Cafe Hey is pretty no-frills, but it's cozy and the food is fresh. I liked the self-serve coffee carafes, and the fact that there were two different roasts to choose from. My breakfast sandwich was enormous and only $4.50. If it hadn't been so big, I might have tried one of the baked goods, which also looked delightful. This place is a really nice and laid back place to go. Nice soft music playing, interesting paintings and pictures on walls, and awesome food! I got the summer lovin' sandwich..it was amazing! The was a different taste..with the avocado and cream cheese and on the Cuban bread..but it was sooooo good! My girlfriend got the Cuban sandwich and said it was really good with real pork, seasoned really well, and delicious. We are definitely coming back here and would recommend it to anyone. One of the many vegan friendly lunch spots I stop into in downtown Tampa. I love the VLT on flacks Cuban bread, add avo with their pasta salad - so tasty. The decor inside the Cafe is cute and quaint with a hipster vibe. The staff is genuinely sweet as well. You grab your own water from a jug with a spout, silverware from little cubbies and you put your dirty dishes in a bin underneath all of that. I think the dirty dishes should go possibly towards the back of the cafe, out of sight and not by the clean utensils and drinking water, but other than that, love love love the food options (non-vegan options available as well). read more

Cafe Hey is located downtown Tampa near abandoned buildings and empty parking lots. The female attendant was uninviting & as for the food it was disappointing. I asked for the veggie and hummus sandwich but they were out of hummus, I then replaced the hummus with avocado. The sandwich was dry, bland and was something I could have made at home. My husband had the full Cuban and shared similar sentiments that the food was dry and not very tastes I will not be dining at Cafe Hey in the future and cannot recommend this eatery. read more

The staff was unfriendly and noticeably frustrated, clearly did not care to be working. They were annoyed at our ordering and took it incorrectly. The chai blend, I have to say was good, albeit iced even though I didn't request an iced latte. They had a tomato bisque - not good by any stretch of the word. And the T'ank sandwich was gross. Pretty sure they used French's mustard. The bread was stale. There was even a warning on the wall - "everything sucks." We should have taken this forewarning. $24 and a terrible meal later, the boyfriend and I left disappointed. It's a poor location but cute place that could really be a little hot spot. I do not understand the positive reviews on Yelp. I came for breakfast and mind you, there was no one here and my breakfast wrap took over 20 minutes with a full staff in place. Came to Cafe Hey while on a trip to Tampa. My friend is a vegan and we found ourselves walking out of downtown toward Cafe Hey. We just happened to find this place the day before their once-monthly brunch. We came back the next day for brunch and I had the best brisket I have ever had in my life! (I am no vegan). Cafe Hey is often touted as a place for vegans, but I'm a little meh about it. They don't have a ton of vegan options, just some tried and true favorites, though I have heard talk of a vegan brunch day. I'm not a planner, though, so I don't make it out to occasional vegan accommodations. I just know what's on the typical menu. I've had their vegBLT a bunch of times and its crunchy Cuban bread and salty bacon that I think I'm pretty certain is Litelife brand. I add avocado always for the extra richness. It's not bad at all, but it doesn't entice me to make a trip out to Tampa Heights for the most part. I do like Cafe Hey, it's definitely a good option, but I wish they had a few more vegan option on the typical menu. read more

I really like the vegetarian options, but I think they cost more than assembling your own meal. If you look at the bottom of the menu, you'll see that they have an option to build your own sandwich, starting with Cuban cheese bread. I put Jack cheese with peppers, tomatoes, and hummus. Have to disagree with Michala T., this place is not really hipster, which I associate with rich kids who spend 3 hrs prepping themselves to look like it only took 5 min, but true hippie-ish. Diverse clientele that increased dramatically in numbers at lunch. I started the morning with a cafe con leche with almond milk that was creamy and perfectly sweetened (no additives needed). Tears fell when I took the last sip. I then held out until lunch when I ordered the cup of pumpkin soup and a Mi Cubano sandwich. Both were amazing with large portions. Decor was fun with lots of (I assume) local art displayed. My favorite was the ET VHS display. This place is now on the rotation. read more

This is one of the most vegan friendly places in Tampa. I'm hooked on the VLT w avocado. A pressed Cuban bread with vegan bacon, and vegan mayo in place of the other stuff. People ask me if I don't miss eating meat and with food like that, why would I? They have other menu selections but I have never ordered anything but the VLT, I just can't do it. The bake goods are just as good and if you are lucky enough to stumble upon the mythical cheesecake(v) make sure to order it right then and there. The last Sunday of the month they offer a special brunch with an expanded menu and unlimited mimosas for about $10. Actually, only then is when I order something other than the VLT. This place is something out of Portlandia and I like it more cause of that. I hope with the construction boom about to happen in The Heights that we don't lose this great cafe. read more

Since the first Yelp post I have eaten lunch. I had a garden salad and sandwich both were great and plentiful. I suggest getting lunch here. I have also eaten several of the tempting brownies on the counter beware these are addictive once you eat one you will be going back. Not impressed. I went here because a local paper was trying to get people to vote between this place and Moxie's. I had a cup of so-so soup and quite possibly the worst slice of quiche I've ever had. My girlfriend had a bowl of oatmeal that she said was 'okay'. I ordered a Cafe Mocha to drink and she had a Chai Latte. Her Chai finally came out about 2 minutes after we had finished eating, which was about 30 minutes after we had ordered. The bill was $22.00 for that. I see no reason to ever go back. Back for more, I found that Cafe Hey has it down for consistent work. Nice breakfast burrito was fresh and flavors were nice together and yet identifiable. Nice coffee, tasty Cuba toast. I go in here to lay back and unwind. Go here for good food, intentionally slow service, (meant as a compliment) chilling out, It's not cheap, but a good value. They should call this place "Cafe Hey, Go Someplace Else". The food is ok, I had a turkey sandwich that was pretty good but my wife's sandwich had cream cheese on it and it tasted like it was going bad. Ok, that can happen...but what is not acceptable is the condition of this place. It looks like no one has cleaned anything in over 10 years. It is pretty dirty inside and the owner(s) should really think about cleaning it up and making it respectable. I can deal with a bad meal once in a while, but cleaning the place is something you can control on a daily basis. read more
