This is the best restaurant on Argyle in my opinion. I have been going many years and also to their old location about two doors down. The staff and owners always come by to greet me. I'm no expert on Vietnamese food, so I will just rate this on how much I enjoy it, period. A LOT! I would actually give it 4.5 if I could, because the service is spotty. It seems during the week, the "junior" waitstaff is on and they seem uninterested in anything like good service. Not rude, just slow and unavailable. There is a woman on the weekends who is cheery and very attentive. But- the food! We immediately fell in love with their spring rolls. Best I've ever had, although one time they apparently forgot (?) the cilantro, so that time it was bland. Otherwise, excellent. And the beef pho is awesome! I add a lot of the cilantro and lime and some of the bean sprouts, and occas hot sauce. Fabulous winter dish! Or even summer- which is when I first had it. We also love the beef salad and the chicken salad- both very flavorful, pretty spicey, fresh and refreshing. I love the claypot dishes (ginger chicken or lemongrass chicken), my bf prefers the grilled lemongrass chicken. After reading the reviews, I guess I'll have to try bun bo hue. The best place for bun bo hue! If you don't know what that is you are missing out on one of the most flavorful Vietnamese noodle soups. It is a spicy beef noodle soup with lots of beef pork blood and pork bone, along with fresh bean sprouts mint cabbage and other vegetables. This soup is a must try and addictive. read more

Do ma! Oh man this place has the best bun bo hue outside of...Hue! But seriously, very good food. They are known for their bun bo hue, its spicy, and its delicious. Try it the way its meant to be eaten, with the pork blood cubes and everything. Some people take it out but I think it takes away from the flavor and authenticity of the dish. You don't order pizza and ask for no cheese right? Their ban xeo appetizer is delicious, big portion that can feed 3 easily. Its a crepe with pork, shrimp, bean sprouts that you wrap in lettuce leaves and dip in fish sauce. Simply divine. Let me warn you that this is a place you go to for good food and that's it. Not much in decor, you can tell the tables and chairs have seen a lot of use. I don't care though, when I go there I go to eat the bun bo hue, not to enjoy the dining environment. If you want 5-star dining with portions leaving you still hungry after dinner, go downtown. If you want an excellent home made bowl of bun bo hue, go to Cafe Hoang. Di ia! read more

One of the first restaurants my wife and I hit up upon moving to Chicago (Uptown) this past month. We walked in on a whim and were pleasantly surprised at the caliber of food we found basically on accident. We started out with some Crab Rangoon and it was fantastic. The typical sweet dipping sauce had a home-made quality to it and proved a great match for the creamy taste and texture of the crab meat mix inside the large bulbs. Probably the best Crab Rangoon I've ever had. My wife wanted to try something Vietnamese (but not the Pho) and conveniently Cafe Hoang offers (what they referred to as) a traditional Vietnamese section on the menu. She went with a lemon chicken and rice dish. It was pretty tasty, but I'm not too big on the lemon and chicken mixture. I was in a terribly un-exotic mood and had randomly been craving a good old combo fried rice bowl for a little while so I went that direction (although I have to admit I felt pretty lame ordering it when there was so much other good stuff on the menu). Turned out to be a pretty good choice. First, the pork mix was a Vietnamese sausage and not just some grilled pork meat as I have become accustomed to. I've also been on a bit of sausage kick lately and this was quite tasty. A little sweet, a little sticky and a little spicy. The shrimp were large and well cooked. Would have been nice if they were de-tailed, but I haven't had any shrimp served that way in Chicago yet so I won't hold it against CH. The rest of the meats were tasty and the rice was of a high quality and texture. On a second visit, we went for the Pho. I went with the seafood and pork mix. It was alright. Not amazing, but not inedible either. My wife's beef and meatball mix had a much better flavor. The bite or two I had were really quite tasty. The service on both of our visits was... interesting. Apathetic, I suppose would describe it. It wasn't slow or lazy, but there was no hussle either. It wasn't offputting, but certainly wasn't friendly either. Biggest drawback and what will probably keep us from going back anytime soon is that there seem to be no lunch specials. There are so many little restaurants like this along Argyle and Broadway and most of them offer something else to bring in customers for lunch. Cafe Hoang offers a relatively cheap dinner, but a relatively expensive lunch since there is no differentiation between lunch and dinner menus. It will be hard to pass on those other deals for a little while. We'll be back eventually I'm sure, but we won't be hurrying either. read more

Usually we would go here for noodles and I'm not a person whose easily disappointed but when it comes to to-go drinks it's not that hard to do. We ordered 1 fresh coconut and 1 Vietnamese iced coffee the coffee came out fine however the coconut was a problem. First of all, when opening the coconut you should not put it on the floor bare without any coverings. That's seriously disgusting. What if there was ants or chlorine still on the floor. The bottom of your shoes has been everywhere from the bathroom to the streets I don't know where it's been. Second when pouring it into a cup make sure to do it carefully so you don't spill most of it. When I received the cup it was only 55% coconut and the rest is air. Third, we payed for this drink so of course I'm expecting it to be 100% what I ordered. The attitude he gave was bad as well. It was as if he didn't care. We left feeling sort of disappointed with the service this time. Maybe he was having a bad day. I'll still return for the noodles tho! read more

I really only come here for one dish, delicious bun bo Hue. Their new location space is much improved. I have dined there twice since their move. The first time the broth was not as flavorful and a bit bland. My husband asked if it was a new recipe and our server suggested we add fish sauce/hot peppers to adjust it to our liking. She says some diners are adverse to those flavors. However, we gave it another try a month it two later and it was very good. Not sure of the hit or miss situation. I would suggest adding more pork to each bowl. I received a huge piece of (mostly) cartilage knuckle (that I choose not to eat) and a strip or two of pork. Otherwise it's delicious. read more

I usually drive all the way up to Tank for Vietnamese food, but now I found a place that is so much closer and just as good. The food was excellent! We had the classic spring rolls, Pho, and grilled pork chop. Everything was really good. We also tried the iced Vietnamese coffee, which was strong, but super good too. I saw a lot of good reviews for this restaurant and they were all lies. While standing outside I could smell a bad stench of mold and sea food but I still decided to go in cuz I was really hungry and driving through traffic sucks in this area. They sat me at a table with a wad of tissue under one leg to keep the table balance. And you can see dirt spots on a black table. We waited about 2 minutes in an empty restaurant at the time for the waiter to come to us and ask us anything. The one good thing I can say about this restaurant was the clean glasses of water they gave us. And there canned sodas were just way overpriced, ridiculous! My friend tried to ordered the seafood pho and keep in mind she doesn't eat pork, the waiter says they don't have pork in it and turned out they did so my friend had to order something else. Again the food kept on having pork when waiter keeps on saying none so then he suggested to my friend a special dish that was very popular with the customers so they decided to get it. When the got the food it tasted like soggy cabbage and it NO FLAVOR whatsoever. And about 6 pieces of sea food and it was suppose to have noodles in there but there wasn't any. Her kid took two bites and she ended up throwing up at the restaurant. After we complained about the food to the manager, he was very rude and acted like he didn't care. They didn't even rushed to clean up after my friends kid made a mess. Really gross! So overall, the place had a bad smell to it as soon as you walk in. It was a little dark and gloomy and a lil dirty. Very poor customer service and this is coming from the manager. I love Viet food but this one is definitely in my "Not to Eat" list...
