My gal pal and I went to Cafe Hoang on Argyle the other day for an early dinner. She had a hankering for some pad thai, and I wanted to try a new place. Cafe Hoang serves Vietnamese and Thai dishes. Photos of the dishes are displayed along the walls for inspection. I really enjoyed my jackfruit smoothie, sweet but not too sweet. I ordered the stir pan fried noodle with chicken and a huge pile of mixed vegetables. At first I was wondering where the heck the noodles were hiding, as the healthy selection of vegetables was very evident. I then noticed that the noodles were tofu-sized rectangles of bundled flat noodles. The noodle rectangles reminded me of those t-shirts that are somehow densely packaged in the shape of a cube or a disk or an animal head but somehow unfolds into a regulation t-shirt. You kind of bite into a noodle rectangle and it unfolds into a little bundle of noodles. To be honest the dish was on the bland side, but I dare not add any of the spicy condiments. That was shared with the table and came with ~10 smaller sized rice paper, 6 nem nuong shaped like meatballs which we cut in half to fit in our spring rolls, veggies (mint, lettuce, sliced cucumbers, matchstick cut carrots) and fish sauce. This past weekend's first sight of winter weather had us craving some Vietnamese soup to keep warm. With our usual spot being temporarily closed for a week, we stumbled upon Cafe Hoang not too far from where we parked our car on Argyle. Overall, the good things about this spot are the affordable prices and it's BYOB. The service is pretty standard. Nothing astonishing or that above and beyond the call of duty effort. After studying the menu for a bit, I noticed they do serve Thai food as well. I wasn't as impressed with the pho options, so I opted for the Spicy Tom Yum soup off their Thai menu featuring shrimp, carrots, mushrooms, celery, corn, bamboo shoots, basil leaves, & coconut milk. Overall a nice balance of creamy and vegetable flavors, and the soup was also served with a side of white rice. A good sized bowl for $12 and I thoroughly enjoyed each and every bit of soup. Both my fiancee and our friend that joined us, opted for the house special pho which included rare beef and a beef meatball. Both of them complained that the soup wasn't piping hot but rather luke warm which was a disappointment since the weather was cold out and hot soup was the main reason we went out to eat. Beside that, the flavors of the broth were decent from what I was told and of course served with the standard affair of assorted leaves and bean sprouts. Decent for $9 per bowl. Other than that, keep an eye on your bill. They tacked on an additionally $20 to my final bill by mistake since they do not have a computerized ordering system. Got seated right away which is amazing... but sadly everything went wrong form there. we waited over 30 min and no body came to use for service. It is not until I personally went inside to ask the staff to take our order. They took our order right away after we approached them. For the next hour after we placed our order they have brought out 5 dishes that we did not order. We did not get our drinks either. I had to go back in and clearly our order again because they do not know what we ordered an hour ago. We then waited for over another 20 minutes and just called it at that because it's simply amazing how a kitchens can mess up our order 5 times when two of those dishes was repeating wrong orders. The family and I checked out Cafe Hoang for dinner and we left feeling very satisfied. Thanks to Yelp, I ordered the Bun Bo Hue. It was delicious. Flavorful broth with all the right meats. My grandma would be proud of how it was made. We ordered the girls crab rangoon as well as the chicken fried rice. They lived each dish. Best Bun Bo Hu by far. After eating it here no other place seems to compared. I don't really think of anything else here because really this is their signature dish. I came here one Sunday and saw literally every table order the same thing noodle dish. Almost every time I come here the entire restaurant will order the same dish. This is one restaurant that is known for one dish. Their Bun Bo Hu does three things better than other restaurants. 1. Their broth is better. Some places feel like a pho broth with some spices added. This taste distinctive to pho broth, a natural spice flavor. 2. It has coagulated pork blood cubes. This is an expensive ingredient that most restaurants won't use since it is more of an acquired taste. But their taste delicious absorbing the broth flavor making it so good. 3 It is nicely spice. 4.5 Cafe Hoang saved my life. Last week whilst I was hit by a severe cold, the only food item that sounded remotely appealing was pho. When your sense of taste and smell is utterly compromised due to intense congestion, one can still count on the powers of fragrant pho to break through the barriers. But, I didn't even have the strength to walk my dog (thanks, Wag). While many Vietnamese eateries deliver to my Uptown apartment, that service comes at a steep cost... to the tune of $5 average delivery charge. Nope, a delivery charge that's more than half the cost of a bowl of pho just doesn't equate to me. Luckily, I found Cafe Hoang on DoorDash and for a limited time, they're offering free delivery! Done and done. Though the Yelp reviews suggest that Cafe Hoang makes super tasty food, I didn't expect it to be as good as it was. They make one of the most fragrant pho broths I've ever had, and that's saying a lot considering I could barely breathe at the time. Everything is packaged neatly and hot and cold accoutrements are separated - all very important when transporting the components of pho. I really enjoyed getting a liberal portion of bean sprouts, lime, basil, rice noodles and a little container of hot sauce. Only thing I was missing? The fresh cilantro. I also tried the spring rolls which were some of the best I've had. As I didn't have the appetite to finish both pho and spring rolls, I wrapped the remaining 1.5 spring rolls in a damp paper towel and they were still near perfect the next day. I had high hopes for this place to be the alternative to the possibly-overrated Pho Xe Tang, but at least on the soup end of things, I was a little disappointed. The Pho does not seem to come with an option for all the offal normally associated with the dish (perhaps speakers of Vietnamese can ask for it special), though the thin-sliced beef had some pleasing connective tissue still on it. The Bun Bo Hue was ok, and had a nice big pig ankle in it, but lacked both the rich red color and the cake of congealed blood of its counterpart at Tank--perhaps the two go hand in hand. The garnishes for the soup were less elaborate than other places I've been--just basil, bean sprouts, and lime. And the Ban Xeo looks nothing like the picture above. It's just bean sprouts, pork, and a few shrimps.sliced lengthwise. All that said, this place is perfectly fine. I'd certainly come back to try the non-soup dishes. read more

When I came in, I was greeted and promptly seated. I ordered a dish of chicken with mixed vegetables served over soft yellow egg noodles. It came pretty quickly, and was delicious and well presented. I especially liked the flavor in the noodles. It was well seasoned, and the meat was cooked until it was tender. They only lost one star because the waitress stopped paying attention to me after bringing me my food. I had to walk up to her to ask her for a to go box and the check. I also had to walk up to the register to pay; she wouldn't come to my table to collect my money. She was too busy talking to her friend behind the counter. Ok so... I'm confused. I wanted bun bo hue yesterday and wanted to try the one the reviews have been raving about. My broth was .... Um. CLEAR. Transparent. With some chili flakes floating on top. What. Where are all the spicy delicious aromatics that make the broth that distinct red?? Looking again at the Yelp pictures I clearly did not receive the same broth I had expected. I ordered the #23 - Bun Thit Nuong, a vermicelli noodle dish with grilled pork and shrimp on skewers, spring roll, and fresh herbs. To eat it, you pour the sweet tangy sauce into the bowl and mix them all up. This is my first time trying this popular Vietnamese dish and I must say I liked it a lot. You have your crunchy bits, barbecued flavors, different aromas, and clean tastes of the vermicelli noodle in a single bowl. I'm also a big fan of their spicy pork and shrimp salad. It had very strong flavors helped by a ton of fresh herbs, fish sauce, and spicy chilli. Can't wait to return next time to try their famous Bun Bo Hue. read more

I had a recommendation from a co-worker to come here and boy are we glad we did. It was Friday night, so we made a reservation by calling. We found out that it was BYOB and they did take credit cards. This place is nestled into the midst of Argyle next to many other Vietnamese restaurants. We walked in and were just slightly hesitant as the place was somewhat empty. However, a warm voice greeted us and asked us if we were the couple that called for a reservation. She walked us over to a table that they had all set up for us with plates, napkins, silverware and glasses of water. We ordered, crab rangoon, bahn xeo, hu tieu xao ga, and beef pho. These were all dishes that we had wanted to try. I butchered the names but the waitress repeated them back to me correctly. So then I tried to repeat her. She was an awesome coach and I think I eventually got the pronunciation down. We noticed that they also had pictures of all the dishes along the wall which we thought was a good idea. The food came out pretty quickly and it was delicious. We asked to box up our leftovers (because clearly we over ordered...but thats what we wanted) and ordered a Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk to go. It was strong but delicious.
