I stopped here on the way back from Binghamton University for Thanksgiving Break with four friends. Just so everyone knows, this is not just a vegan restaurant. It is a healthy Italian style restaurant. They have meat too. ATMOSPHERE I loved the atmosphere of this place. It looks like a house (because it is), but it is mega bright with nice art on the walls and a warm feeling. The whole place is also very clean. FOOD I got the Hummus Veggie Platter for my appetizer. The hummus was amazing and peppery and the veggies were so fresh and crunchy. It was a bit pricey though at $7.50. You are paying for the quality. For dinner I got a Cafe Vegetarian Pizza which comes with broccoli, roasted peppers, fresh mushrooms, onions, artichoke hearts, and mozzarella. They allow you to make it vegan with dairy-free mozzarella, so I did that and also added a vegetarian pepperonis (i'm pretty sure they were vegan, you can ask them though). The pizzas there are all made with organic unbleached flour. The normal price of the Cafe Vegetarian Pizza is $11.25 but with asking for the pepperoni and dairy-free cheese it came out to $12.50. I could have bought a whole pizza for that price, but again I guess you are paying for the high quality of the ingredients they use. The crust of the pizza was so amazing. i have never tasted such an amazing crust before. The veggies were so fresh and tasty. The only problem at all with this pizza was that the dairy-free mozzarella had little to no taste and the pepperoni got lost in the mix of vegetables and were undetectable by taste, but it didn't take away from the pizza as a whole. I saw the pepperoni but I couldn't taste them. I picked one up to taste it alone and it had a very dull and unimpressive flavor. It was obviously a store bought, packaged product. Maybe Yves? Next time I would get the normal cheese and no veggie pepperoni. I would want to try another menu item if I go back, though. I was stuffed and only finished half the pizza, but my two of my friends got the Vegan Raspberry Chocolate Cake and I had to try it. It was the best cake (vegan or not vegan) that I have ever tasted. It was rich and the frosting was the best part. It had a thin layer of raspberry jelly in it too. I am salivating just thinking about it. Overall, this restaurant was one of the best places I have ever been that offers extensive vegan/vegetarian options. There was no grease and everything was fresh. The only reason it will lose a star is for using lower quality non-dairy cheese and veggie pepperoni. They set a very high standard with all of their other stuff in terms of quality and flavor. I would love to go back again and probably will on the drive home after this semester is over. read more

One of my favorites in Denville. They offer healthy foods and Italian foods. They always have new art on the walls. Upstairs is what they call a Tapas bar, but really it's just an area where you can buy a bottle of wine and relax while you drink it. They don't actually have tapas or serve food upstairs. read more

I was a little nervous going into it, as the more recent reviews haven't been that kind, but I trusted the person's opinion I was going with. I felt the environment to be very friendly sitting outside on the porch, though inside had a totally different vibe when I walked through to the bathroom. I would definitely recommend sitting outside. We shared a salad to start, delicious and full of things other than just the lettuce (always a plus for me because I hate feeling like I'm paying for just lettuce). All of our meals were hot and prompt. Had a delicious special pasta with pesto and chicken. My biggest critique on that is I didn't feel I got a lot of chicken, mostly just half a box of pasta for $18. It all tasted great, but didn't feel it was a great value for the money on the entree. Tasteless Food. Awful Service. This was my first visit to Cafe Metro and definitely my last. We arrived at 6:00 on a Saturday night, and we were promptly seated. The restaurant was still half empty. The menu seemed good to all of us -- vegan, vegetarian and meat eater could all be satisfied. The waitress took our order for appetizers and entrees about 15 minutes after being seated and that's when the "fun" began. After waiting about 45 minutes, I finally tracked down our waitress and asked where our appetizers were. At this point the restaurant had filled up and people who came in well after us were already eating their appetizers and entrees. The waitress rudely told me: "You know the kitchen is really busy." And then she walked away. About 15 minutes later our calamari and fish cakes arrived. I should have taken a photo. The calamari was swimming in a hot vinaigrette and it was "steaming." The rings were rubbery and bitter from the vinegar. Awful. The fish cakes (2) were just okay--but they had no texture and tasted like mainly bread crumbs. I told the waitress that the calamari was not edible; it was overcooked. She did not respond but just took away the full plate. We have now been at the restaurant 1.5 hours and we are still waiting for our entrees. Our waitress seems to have disappeared, but she reappears about 30 minutes later with the entrees. My husband's tofu stir fry is very hot and the vegetables are completely overcooked and mushy. The stir fry is also completely tasteless. A salad comes with wilted, old greens. My tofu lasagne is supposed to have zucchini and sun dried tomatoes. I think the zucchini must have been sliced so thin that it disintegrated during the cooking process. But the lasagna does have a very thick layer of very hard sun dried tomatoes that I need to scrap off--they hadn't been softened prior to cooking. We told the waitress that the tofu stir fry had been overcooked and was not edible; her response: "Okay". She did not offer to take it back for a new dish. And, of course, all the items were listed on our bill when we finally left some 2.5 hours later. On the way out I asked to speak with the manager. A waitress appeared and told me that she was the manager. I shared with her our experience and the extremely poor and sometimes rude service from our waitress. She did apologize, and noted that they were short staffed that night, but offered nothing else. She seemed anxious to get back to waiting on tables. Maybe they were short staffed that night, but there is no reason to be rude to a customer who has been very patient. And there is no reason not to take back food that was clearly poorly prepared. If I could give this restaurant zero stars I would. Stay away from this spot! read more

This place is pleasant and has a pretty standard menu of vegetarian/vegan/meat or fish dishes. They will make adjustments as requested. The food is always flavorful, the service pleasant, and the place attractive. The specials are usually quite inspired but still within the vein of the rest of the offerings. We have never been disappointed with the food. But the service can be slow. Not slow as molasses but just to the point where you are starting to wonder where that waiter went. read more

This place sucks. well not 100% the food was excellet.... once we finally got it. I made a reservation for 530 and we showed up on time. the APATIZERS did not arrive until 640. and food until 710ish. when we ran low on bread it was a hassle to get more and water was never filled. if the service was not this bad i would go back. but based on how rude and slow the service was i will not step foot in cafe metro ever again. read more

I've only been here once but enjoyed it! I'm always looking for vegetarian spots in NJ and came across Cafe Metro on Yelp. My mom and I shared a vegetarian lasagna special, which we loved (it had lots of fresh veggies and the sauce was really flavorful) and the Jardinera pizza (very good but didn't quite compare to the lasagna). I'm definitely planning on going back, there are so many vegan and macro options on the menu (a rare find in New Jersey). At the same time, I appreciate that the menu includes meat because many of my family members and friends aren't vegetarians. It's BYOB and has a homey vibe. Looking forward to going again when the weather gets warmer so I can dine outside on their front porch. read more

Very good actually. I went there expecting to be dissapointed with their service but they were very attentive. I liked they had bread to serve to start with. I ordered the pork chop it was very good, only thing that might've needed improvement were the mashed potatoes they said garlic mashed but I def didn't taste any garlic. Overall I enjoyed my meal there. My friend wasn't happy though as she had asked for her meal to be wrapped up and they forgot and threw it away. read more

Amazing place with incredible food! Healthy alternatives that taste better than the real thing (ie meatless meatballs YUM) - family oriented, fantastic service, but go for the food! The edamame dumplings to die for. The pizza was incredible and my daughter who is a picky eater just kept eating it! I was a bit hesitate to recommend this place since it is mainly vegan/vegetarian -- but after seating at a cozy table (there was 6 of us) we all managed to order something. My favorite Denville restaurant! I love that it's BYOB and that I can always find something healthy on the menu! Tempeh stir-fry is my favorite! Two of us can usually dine here for under $50. They also accommodate larger groups well! I've had groups of 10-12 people seated here easily (just call ahead!) The only thing that is keeping me from giving them 5 stars is on occasion my food has come out warm/room temp and I've had to send it back to be heated up. I called to place a take out order and I think I woke up the girl who answered. I requested two entrees and asked for extra tahini dressing for my salad, stating I would pay extra. The sleepy girl said she would just give me extra. The order was ready right on time, but both meals were disappointingly bland. The rigatoni metro tasted almost unsalted and I suspect no salt was used to cook the pasta. The Thai peanut chicken was similar to an airplane meal. Plain steamed broccoli, plain brown rice, and un unappealing pile of brown mush which was the chicken. It tasted only ok. The house salad was actually the highlight of the meal, offering cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, and greens. It was obviously pre-packaged ready for to-go orders though. The (x-tra) tahini dressing was simply watered down to stretch the original amount and inedibly hot and spicy. WHY? This place has been around forever and I would suggest they consider a re-boot. read more

When the weather is pleasant, one of our fav spots is the outside deck at Cafe Metro ~ BYOB with amazing food and a nice breeze ~ what more could you ask for? Well, the desserts are truly incredible! Go for dinner, dessert, or just a cappuccino ~ it's lovely and never disappoints. With revolving specials all year round, some of the best fancy/not-so-fancy cooking, handmade pizzas, and desserts, the staff are great, and cater to you even when they are crazy busy (which is usually!). I live in NYC and frequently come home to new jersey to go to this place for dinner even though its still a 30 min drive from where my family lives in NJ. get the point? The menu is completely eclectic-- meaning I can go with my dad or my vegetarian best friend and both would be equally satisfied. Their specials are off the charts. Just fresh food, simple ingredients, and made with lots of love. I am always impressed by whatever I order. Plus it's reasonably priced and low-key. Just a lil house in denville that puts down a plate of food in front of you that makes you say "where did this come from and who did it come from??" and its BYOB... i mean, come on! got to love it :) very important: for dessert-- GET THE PEANUT BUTTER CHEESECAKE. im serious. it will change your world. enjoyyyy! read more

I love stopping here for lunch - the lunch menu is light and fairly priced, and it's always delicious. I've also gone for dinner a few times, and the portions are EXTREMELY generous. I finished half of my veggie lo-mein and had to take the rest home. My friend had the calamari pasta dish and she said it was awesome - couldn't finish hers either. Definitely worth the $ we spent. Everything always tastes fresh, and they have a lot of vegetarian (and I believe vegan) options available. I always feel good about what I'm eating here. I can also appreciate their dedication to organic products versus conventional food. Service is fantastic. Everyone who has waited on me has been accommodating and pleasant, and I'm never forgotten about, which is a hazard I run into when eating by myself. The one very minor problem I've found is that it can get pretty cold in the dining room (at least during the cooler months), so bring a cardigan or light sweater if you tend to get chilly like me. read more

I love Cafe Metro. I would've given it 5 stars other than you can't order items on the lunch menu past 3pm, even for takeout. I think if you have all the ingredients you should always be able to accommodate a paying customer. Other than that, the staff is great, the food is great. First off, I'm not a vegan or vegetarian. At the risk of sounding tasteless, I love meat. With that being said, I also love this restaurant. I've been here many times over the past couple years and have yet to be disappointed. I generally order the Rigatoni Metro or Martini's Crazy Chicken and both are consistently delicious. In fact, everything I've ever tried here is delicious. My friends and I eat off each other's plates (yes, we are heathens, but foodie heathens) and everything from the tempeh appetizer to the peanut butter cheesecake satisfies my palatte. Be aware. This was a great place for decent food until I was ripped off Three times by one of their waitresses. Three times and MANAGEMENT told me that this was M"S. WAY. Apparently the wait staff there makes their own change. THREE times I never got my change from M because she told me she didn't have the correct amount to give me back. M EVEN WENT SO FAR AS PUTTING OUT HER PALMS UP TO SHOW ME SHE HAD NO CHANGE TO GIVE ME. I was stupid enough to have this happen to me THREE times. Shame on me. Shame on Cafe Metro for continuing to keep this waitress employed. I guess I was just hoping thing would change, but not so. Good food doesn't outweigh being robbed. We had dinner at Metro cafe. It did not disappoint. We hadn't had dinner there in years. Their menu is limited but there are plenty of choices even for the pickiest person. The have great selections for vegetarians. It is sort of a b.y.o.b.but you can get a glass of dessert wines etc. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. It has outside dinning. I would give this place 2 stars save for the fact my S.O. really liked his almond encrusted Salmon. He also enjoyed the calamari, even though it wasn't the way he usually likes it-the healthy version he did enjoy! Yay! Me, on the other hand, ordered the Caesar salad and it was nothing special, but it was plentiful, which is always a plus. However, I ordered the chicken with peanut sauce and was horribly disappointed. It was so dry it was inedible, peanut sauce was ok, (I make better), but the chicken was like a hockey puck. I should have sent it back, but no, I took it home, and then promptly threw it away. It should NEVER have come out of the kitchen. I know it would not have come out of mine. But, the place is really cute, the service friendly and attentive and will perhaps go back for the porch in the warmer weather. But if second visit is a miss-that's all I give. Was reading some of the comments about this place and was so glad this didn't influence our decision to eat here. This is a great restaurant especially if your party is a mix of vegetarians and omnivores. Food was delicious. Choices were perfect. Between us we had the Tempeh with chutney which was very tasty, the stir fried vegetables with tofu which was a huge portion and the awesome tofu which was like having chicken parm without the chicken. While we all wound up ordering vegetarian dishes there was a nice section of fish, chicken and even pork chops. Plus the place is very cute and homey and the service was excellent. read more
