Almond encrusted Salmon with spinach and mashed potatoes
    Laura P.

Always great service and consistently good food. Walls decorated as a gallery of local artists. I had the Almond Encrusted Salmon which is one of my favorites.

    Dirty bread napkin.

I gave this spot two stars because the food was good. When we walked in, we were "greeted" by irritated staff and asked if we had a reservation. We didn't, but there were plenty of open tables. Every staff member was walking around with irritated looks on their faces. The server put down water glasses. One had lipstick on it (not ours). The seat I was supposed to sit on was filthy with stains old and new. Finally , the bread basket out in front of us had a dirty napkin. Not impressed.

We had my daughter's baby shower here. The upstairs room is tastefully decorated. We could arrive the night before to decorate and the room was ours for the day of the shower. Communication and planning were excellent and Jeanne was very flexible with our requests. We were able to bring our own wine and the food was excellent and portions were very generous. The service was also very good. I would definitely plan another event here in the future.

My clients picked this spot for lunch. I decided to get the vegetable stir fry. When I arrived I told the nice server that I was picking up, she told me they were packing it. Another lady came out and told me it will be a little more time so I sat and waited. It took about another 10 to 15 minutes. I dropped off the food and when I got in I ate. The stir fry was very filling but it was just ok in taste. I had to add a little hot sauce and it needed a little season salt but it wasn't bad, it was just ok. I would need to give another one of their dishes a try.

    Cauliflower steak was delicious

Great food, good wait staff. I've had the hummus which included both fresh warm pita along with veggies. For dinner I tried the cauliflower steak which was more than a steak but an entire small cauliflower. It was served with kale and Had quite a bit of garlic so just Incase you don't care for garlic. I thought it was delicious! Next time I would like to sit out on the deck It was much quieter Great place, great food!

Very surprised by the size. It was flavorful but for 15 dollars this is extremely small and expensive. Inside seating was very underwhelming. Sitting outside is the nicest part.

Almond crusted salmon on top of mashed potatoes and spinach!

Super slow service. And forgot several items. Never brought us bread. Had to remind her to bring sparkling water.

Denville Seafood / Codmother's Cafe on Broadway in downtown Denville stands out for all the right reasons -- with incredibly fresh and tasty locally-sourced fish, a welcoming midscale atmosphere, and staff that actually cares about the customers and food they're serving. Denville Seafood / Codmother's Cafe operates as a seafood market and restaurant. The market offers a variety of fresh seafood all of which is locally-sourced from the New Fulton Fish Market in NYC as well as seafood-based soups and salads prepared on-site to enjoy elsewhere. The other side of the shop offers a sit-down restaurant where the chef can prepare anything sold in the market in a variety of ways for diners to enjoy in the indoor or outdoor dining areas or to go. The menu is extensive and any of the fresh fish -- from bass to tuna -- or shellfish sold in the market are available in the restaurant in a wide variety of preparation styles -- baked, broiled, and fried with white wine-butter sauce, rosemary, lemon-caper, scampi, or teriyaki sauces. Dinner platters (which range from $28 to $45 as of December 2025) include coleslaw, steamed vegetables, and your choice of fries, rice, potatoes, pasta, or extra steamed vegetables. Your imagination is the only thing limiting the number of iterations available. For diners who don't enjoy seafood, Codmother's Cafe offers linguine with or without broccoli, chicken tenders, and the New Jersey-staple Chicken Parmigiana. The atmosphere in the dining room hits that perfect "midscale" sweet spot where it feels special enough for a nice night out, but still relaxed and welcoming for a casual meal with friends and family. The high-energy servers are clearly on top of their game and make the whole experience fun. We'll definitely be back. PRO TIP #1: Be flexible with your order. With all of the seafood sourced daily based on what's available at the New Fulton Fish Market and sold in both the market and restaurant, there's a real risk they might run out of something on the menu so make sure you have a back-up in case your initial craving is 86-ed for the day when you order. PRO TIP #2: Free street parking is available on Broadway and 1st Avenue as well as in the Denville municipal parking lots located on 1st Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue.

The sword fish was excellent, huge big piece of succulent fish cooked to perfection on a bed of mixed root vegetables. The sauce was light and bright and a perfect pairing. The coleslaw was crispy and fresh and not too much mayo. Wait service was excellent and super friendly. Would definitely come back.

I have to say, I was sad that this was only the first time I'd been here because the food and the service were outstanding. To be fair, I'm only going to review my meal and the shared appetizers because after a few glasses of wine (it's BYOB) and a couple of sips of Sambuca that I snuck in...I don't remember what everyone else had. Our very fun and friendly server, Daniella (the owner's daughter), started us off with a few baskets of homemade rolls that were absolutely delicious. Since there were 14 of us we got a bunch of appetizers to share and pass around the table. We had 2 orders of Calamari and two of the Suppa's Thinny pizzas and one each of the Stuffed mushrooms, Mussels with white sauce, and Rice balls. I don't think there was a crumb left. The stuffed mushrooms might have been the best I've had and I practically licked the sauce off the plate - some kind of cream sauce made with a touch of love. The pizza was delicious, but I do with it had been left in for about 90 more seconds as I was looking for it to be a little crispier. Otherwise the appetizers were all excellent. For my entree I ordered the Vodka chicken parm over penne. Three big chicken breasts over a good sized portion of penne and slathered in a very creamy vodka sauce. I'm a big fan of vodka sauce and this one was richer than I've had before...it was really tasty. And, because of the appetizers, I actually got two smaller portioned lunches out of this. (To be fair, I would have preferred linguini, but the chicken and sauce were the heroes of the meal so the pasta wasn't THAT important.) I finish up the meal with an espresso and a cannoli (they had run out of tiramisu). I should've gotten a double espresso because the cannoli was huge and I ran out of espresso halfway through the dessert. The cannoli shell was fresh and crispy (so it wasn't pre-filled) and less sweet than most Italian places here in the US. Reminded me of the cannoli in Rome. Not only will I be back, but I've already sent people here who have loved it. Sorry for the lack of photos...

We came here to celebrate my husband's 52nd birthday, and the experience did not disappoint. I had called ahead and was pleased that they allowed me to bring a custom cake. I also appreciated the simple yet elegant touches, like the beautifully folded table napkins and a selection of champagne options (bonus points!) Starting off, the grilled octopus with capers, onions, and red peppers was the best I've ever had--simply amazing. It was light, fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. This is an absolute must-order appetizer. For my entrée, I ordered the Diver scallops with grilled asparagus risotto, crab meat, and crispy prosciutto. It was very good--rich, flavorful, and beautifully presented. My husband chose the Halibut with grilled asparagus and butternut squash risotto, and he enjoyed every bite as well. To top off the evening, the staff came out to sing happy birthday, which added another nice touch to the night. The service, ambiance, and food all came together to create an exceptional experience. I would highly recommend Barka for anyone looking for excellent seafood, elegant ambiance, and attentive service.
