Cute and cozy for Valentine's Day. They aren't normally open Sundays, but they were for valentines weekend. It was a perfect chance for us to try it. My husband, a history teacher, loved the old train station vibes and I enjoyed all the food. Our drinks and food were delicious. I wish they had told us the tuna dish was sold out before we looked through the menu and tried to order, but we adapted. Our server kind of forgot about us as the night went on, but luckily we are easy people and didn't mind too much. Not sure if I'll come back, but it was great for the occasion. read more

A group of us met for dinner at The Station this week. The atmosphere of this restaurant is off the charts. The building was the actual station for the train stop in Mountain Lakes. The walls are all stone which gives this place a very cool vibe. When you first walk in there's a small bar, with dining downstairs. We shared the cold antipasto appetizer, then I ordered the Stuffed Salmon as an entree. The meal was very good with crabmeat inside the salmon. The rice and veggies it was served with were also delicious. I ordered the Grandma's chocolate cake for dessert. This was pretty dense, like a flourless cake, but still good! If you've never been here, I suggest you check it out. It's a very unique place! read more

Took my clients out to dinner here after a productive meeting at their office nearby, as this place has been recommended to them. It was a little tough to find, but very cute once you do, and it's actually built into the train station. We headed inside and we walked downstairs into the main dining room, which has a vintage, ornate ambience, with dark burgundy tablecloths, and cloth napkins. Their menu was extensive, with a secondary menu of special apps and entrees given to us separately that was available for the season. I tried the pear martini, it was good but nothing special. My colleagues tried the blood orange martini and margarita, said they were yummy as well. We shared some apps around the table - the jumbo shrimp ajillo were really good, served with corn which you don't often see, but well cooked/seasoned with just the right amount of char. The stuffed avocado appetizer was refreshing and tasty, and the ahi tuna was good quality and i loved the fresh seaweed salad it was served with. For entrees, a few of us had the filet mignon Gorgonzola. It came with shoestring potato fries, to be honest i was a bit underwhelmed by the overall dish. The presentation wasn't really inviting and the shoestring potatoes were overcooked. I personally don't feel there was much of a cheesy taste to it either. The steak itself was perfectly cooked, medium rare like i asked, and i mostly pushed off the potatoes and ate just the steak, which was flavorful and tender. The stuffed salmon with the crab was okay - i would have preferred a bit more difference in the texture, the crab was mushy and then the salmon was also cooked mushy with no char, just wasn't my favorite . I also tried an espresso martini, but I am a purist and ask them to leave out the Baileys as I don't feel this should be part of a genuine espresso martini. Again, it was good, but not something I would come back for. My colleague tried the regular espresso martini as it came and did not like it. The service was good and they didn't bring the bill until i gave him the silent signal even after we declined dessert, which i appreciated the subtlety of as we were still having a work-conversation. We have gone here many times, but there was significant decline this time around. For various reasons, we had not visited for the past 2 years or so (having gone several time prior to that). Things have gone downhill. This review is all written in the context of a finer dining locale, which I have different expectations from as opposed to a casual dining experience. 1. Service was nowhere near the same level as in the past. We waited for about 10 minutes after being seated to get the menu. Our server never checked on us during the meal to see if everything was alright. We had to ask for refills of water, rather, waiting several minutes before we could attract someone's attention (in the past...again, in the context of a fine dining experience...they would be checking frequently and refill without being requested). After the table was cleared and we mentioned we did not want anything additional, we waited at least 10 minutes for the check to be delivered...and then finally had to attract someone's attention to get it brought over. ' In prior visits, we felt the service was very inviting and warm, but very lacking in this trip. 2. Food - I got the jambalaya, which was very good. My wife ordered the stuffed salmon, The stuffing was extremely salty. Also, she could detect very little crab in it...almost all breading. 3. Ambience - the restaurant is still attractive, but...and I will admit this is minor...the salt shakers were those you would typically see in a diner...plain glass containers. The centerpiece, which looks like it should be a small flame...sat there unlit and not very attractive looking. Given the prices and the disappointing experience this time around, we will probably not be returning. read more

The food is amazing, their menu has a bit of everything. What I love is that most is that they prepare everything from their bread to their desserts in house! Their stakes are much better than the so called steak houses. Unfortunately tonight(10/29/25) the service was terrible. The waitress was inattentive to the point of forgetfulness. I hope they train their staff to care about their patrons. The station is a beautiful location with warm corners & cozy appointments. Their bathrooms are clean & lit nicely. read more

I was a bit disappointed that a restaurant known for being a stand-out and an excellent choice missed the mark. We sat outside on a lovely summer evening on a beautiful stone patio. Soft music, a selection of soft rock - Doobie Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, etc. From where we sat, we could hear the music from the outside tables at the bar on the upper level. The music was similar, but we could hear the Doobies in one location, Paul Simon from another, both at the same time. We mentioned this to the wait staff, who offered to raise the volume of the music near us. I suggested that both locations should play the same music. We laughed at first, but it became annoying by the end of the meal. Not acceptable in what should be a high-end restaurant. On to the food. We started with bacon-wrapped scallops that were very good. On to the main course, where the hanger steak was sold out, so my wife opted for steak au poivre, she didn't want it smothered in pepper, and the waiter offered to go light. The dish turned out to be so light that it was essentially a steak with a cream sauce, smothered with mushrooms, although shallots were specifically mentioned on the menu, not mushrooms. One BIG pet peeve of mine is menus that describe a dish, yet don't mention a major ingredient that is featured, something that is unacceptable in a restaurant with $50 steaks. My seared tuna with wasabi Planko crust was good, but I would have liked a bit more wasabi kick. To each his/her own. Between the annoying music, ok steak, and lack of follow-up from the staff to see how our meals were, or if we wanted drink refills brought a high mark down to a medium based on the restaurant's reputation. read more

My wife and I came for cocktails. They were so amazing that we stayed for 2 cocktails, 2 appetizers, salad, 2 entrees, and a bottle of wine. Best dining experience I've had in years, topped off with excellent, unobtrusive service. When you someone rushing to your table to fill up a half empty and they stop in their tracks 8 feet away so as not to interrupt, you know that they have been well trained and managed. The 12 ox filet mignon was right up there with Keen's and Del Frisco at ~half the price. The bottle of cab was priced at the retail price I found on Vivino. We stopped by on a Monday around 5pm for an early birthday dinner for a friend. We made a reservation for a party of 4 which wasn't really needed (but per our waiter, definitely necessary from Thursday-Sunday). The Station has a very old yet classic feel. I started off with The Station Spritz which was honestly just okay. The Baked Brie in Puff Pastry was warm, flaky, and pretty tasty! The Firecracker Fried Calamari was a good try but it got soggy way too fast and some pieces had way more balsamic vinegar than others. I almost would've preferred to have the firecracker sauce as a dip rather than on top. The major highlight of this meal was the Shrimp Horseradish & Capers. Truly one of the best pasta dishes I've had! It was light, creamy, slightly sharp from the dill and horseradish, briny from the capers, with large, succulent pieces of shrimp. I mean the whole dish was absolutely impeccable. I even had some for leftovers and it was just as good! We decided to split 3 desserts, but unfortunately none of them were worth getting. They were dry, dense, and didn't have good flavors. All in all, the pasta dish alone is worth a visit here. It is great for a date or business dinner as it is pretty intimate. My husband and I were able to share the wedge salad. I had the hanger steak for dinner which was very tender and well cooked. Overall my meal was delicious. Just a note be aware of extra charges. Let me start by saying I've been here twice before. Once with my girlfriend and once with my brother. Both times were absolutely amazing from the food to the service. Last night however was such a disaster that I won't ever be back. First off, it took 20 minutes for a server to come greet us and take our order. Never a good look. Secondly, I ordered blackened shrimp and scallops for appetizers. Not only was the shrimp cooked to all hell, they came out with ahi tuna, not scallops. Still ate the tuna, but it wasn't anything special. Thirdly, I ordered a grilled hanger steak medium rare. 90% of the steak came out well done and I had a slice that was medium well at best. Fourthly, the drink menu shows the prices as 13.50 for the drinks, and I was charged 16. I didn't complain at all to the server about anything. I'll just speak with my dollar and never go back again. read more

Wow! Fabulous restaurant! Located in an old stone railway station it has a cozy romantic atmosphere. The service is excellent and the food is remarkable, everything is fresh and made to order. Baked Brie appetizer was marvelous. Both the Halibut and the Pasta Bolognese were exceptional. Desserts of chocolate peanut-butter cake and a blueberry tart were perfect. My wife and I dined at The Station on Valentine's Day. Perfect dining experience. We were seated immediately. Service was warm and attentive - befitting a fine dining establishment. Even though the place was packed, wait staff checked on us several times. Food was excellent. The antipasto for two (or more) was huge and tasty. The "or more" was accurate. I had the jambalaya - it was a full bowl of tasty and well flavored meat. My wife enjoyed her chicken Madeira. And we each had dessert - crème brûlée and peanut butter chocolate ganache. I can say nothing remotely negative. The Station is a fine dining establishment for a special meal. read more

Pros: Food was delicious and portions were decently sized. Wait staff were nice and attentive. I ordered the Shrimp Horseradish and Capers over spinach fettuccine. It was pretty great and the Shrimp were huge! Prices were fair for the classiness of the restaurant. Great ambience too. Plenty of parking! Family came here for a birthday dinner so we went all out appetizers, main course and dessert for seven. Friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. However, it can get extremely cold has they have many air vents blowing straight down on diners. More than a few times we had to ask to turn down. Everybody was happy with the appetizer and main course except I ordered a Filet mignon medium rare and it came out medium to well. Also, the two fish main courses we ordered came out well after the other orders. It also seemed to take a very long time to get dessert served. Overall the experience was average. But for the price which is on the high side, we would not return. read more

I went to dinner on a Thursday. Stayed outdoors. It was a nice evening and with the fireplace and heater, it was very comfortable. I am pleasantly surprised with how my food turned out, I ordered shrimp horseradish capers with spinach fettuccine. It was delicious! The riesling was very and went well with the entrée. The service was also very good. One suggestion to make the dining experience even better is to add music (e.g. play acoustic music) and also serve the bread warm. Also, consider adding lights on the steps from outdoor dining to the parking area. I had to use my cellphone flashlight to make sure I see the steps well. Met friends here for dinner last night and was pleasantly surprised. First, it is a lovely restaurant - much bigger than it looks and has kept the charm of the old train station. It also isn't ridiculously loud - table clothes do make a difference!! Has an outdoor patio too but it was so hot that very few people were out there. Service was attentive but not hovering and we didn't feel rushed at all. We had drinks, appetizers and entrees. My friend is very allergic to shellfish and she was able to check with the kitchen about cross-contamination and they were quick to tell her which entrees were safe. They also allowed some substitutions in my order with no issue. We had the beet salad, filet, steak au poivre, bacon wrapped scallops, tuna tartare and dried cranberry salad and cleared our plates. Probably my favorite thing was the fact that we could talk to each other easily and never felt like we had to leave. That is rare these days. We'll definitely be back. read more

The food is excellent the lower stars are for service and hospitality. My wife and I went here for our anniversary dinner (pre-covid in 2019) and the owner was there. Any locals or regulars were treated like royalty but since we were first-time guests, we were treated like second-class citizens. Took awhile to order, nobody bothered checking on us, had to chase down someone for the check. I could see that owners and staff were capable of extending hospitality and welcome, just wish we had received some of it. read more

The ambience was lovely. An interesting venue with the original stone from the Mountain Lakes train station. The service was fine. The servers checked on us frequently. The food however left something to be desired. I had mussels. There were 2 mussel appetizers. I asked the server if the organic mussels were very spicy. He said not at all. They were very spicy to my taste. I did eat them but clearly the server wasn't familiar with them. The hangar steak was chewy and bland. The sides were very good. CHECK YOUR BILL TO NOT BE RIPPED OFF! Today was our first, and evidently last, visit to this restaurant. We, my five year old and I, arrived early at 4:10 for daddy and daughter time. While my daughter and I had a great time the rest, other than the service, was a complete disappointment and then we were over charged on the bill. Having not been here before we ordered simple dishes. Pasta and sauce for my girl and sausage and broccoli rabe pasta for me along with ice cream and apple cobbler. The sausage and broccoli rabe pasta was a mess. Over herbed and spiced when any Italian will tell you that it is supposed to be simple garlic and oil with perhaps a bit of tomato. The apple cobbler was clearly frozen and not cooked through. While this was disappointing, being over charged as compared to the prices on the menu made the experience distasteful. I asked for the manager after the over charge was pointed out. I gently expressed the issues to the manager who advised me this is the way they've done it for 23 years. I presume he didn't mean over charging his customers, just serving bad food for 23 years. I was told by the server that somehow the menu and the actual charges were not synchronized. That's not acceptable. Moreover the mini manager didn't say a word about the over charging. The mini manager and kitchen should be tremendously embarrassed by the poor food and over charging. But it seems mini manager is not. Telling me that I should not return. This somehow is about me in mini manager's mind, and not about the bad food and dishonest charging. Yes, the absurd response of the manager has caused me to be caustic in this review. Go to this place if you want. Just be prepared to be disappointed by the poor food and be careful that you're not over charged. read more

How to run a restaurant in the time of COVID-19? Follow the example of Station Restaurant. This afternoon I joined friends at the outside seating. Not only did the restaurant ensure all staff had masks, we were 6 feet or more from other diners, the restaurant installed fans to ensure that the air was in constant movement. Of course, the food was great, the staff was friendly and attentive. However, these days, it is all about ensuring a safe environment for those of us courageous enough to dine outside of our homes. The station hit that out of the park! Our waiter was Alan, he was so attentive and friendly. I cannot imagine what it takes to entertain guests under these circumstances, Alan pulled it off in high style! These days, I go out very little and only to places I think are concerned with my safety and the safety of their employees. I will visit the Station again, no question! read more
