It's not very often when I do a review but felt I had to with this place. The outside of the place was inviting, I was expecting a bar/grill atmosphere, but it pales when you walk inside. I was actually surprised to find basically a Qdoba knock-off with tone-deaf staff and well...bland, tasteless food. I ordered a burrito with chicken and had to beg for no rice before the person understood then they continuously rushed the ingredients without me having a chance to say anything. All staff needs some coaching. Note: it is all "to-go" dishware and knife/fork whether you dine in or not. I took two bites and tossed it...never have I ever done that. Bland: chicken was terrible. Worst $ I have spent in a while. In a place where there is a high concentration of eating options, best to avoid this one...lesson learned. read more

Cafe Mexicali seems to be really struggling. We have been to the Johnstown location many times and every time we go the food seems to get worse. They post signs about prices increases, which we have to pay, but then we do not get what we pay for. I have ordered their salad numerous times, and when you order with meat, you can't even tell they have put any in. Only the extra extra small amount that they put it to show what you ordered. Please give your customers what they pay for. This is use to be a great place to dine, but really has been disappointing lately. read more

Skip it. Go across the street to Qdoba The atmosphere here is fast food meets dine-in, so it's more upscale than Taco Bell, but it's not a typical "sit down" restaurant. The order process is a "you pick it" style similar to Subway, Qdoba, and Jason's Deli. The food and menu is basically identical to Qdoba or Chipotle, except that here they charge you extra for guacamole and sour cream - and you have to ask for it and they expect you to know exactly what's in your entree, even if you're a first timer - be ready for brusk service (casual rudeness because they expect you to not be a first-timer). I ordered a chicken burrito. The server immediately loaded the burrito with a massive scoop of rice without asking if I wanted rice - I did not, so she gave me a nasty look and scooped it out, then went for an equally massive scoop of beans and I managed to stop her before that made it onto the tortilla. Then the meat, and I had to request the aforementioned guacamole and sour cream, along with the cheese, lettuce and tomato (which come stuffed into the side of the plate and not in the burrito. I discovered that onions are considered either lettuce or tomatoes here because I asked for no onions and they were there. Who knew onions were tomatoes in Mexicali? The burrito is served "smothered" - meaning a ladle of liquid chili is poured over the top, so this isn't a burrito you can eat with your hands. It's gonna be messy, so I wouldn't recommend it for anyone under 10 unless you have a LOT of wet wipes. The flavors was just ok, nothing to rave over. The consistency was like a really amazing tortilla stew - wet, liquidy, and, well, soupy. Definitely need to use the plastic tableware that they offer, grab a spoon. Overall, I paid $15 for my burrito stew and a drink. My suggestion would be to walk 50 yards across the parking lot to the Qdoba. Less $$ and better food. Oh, and Qdoba has a soda machine with all the cool flavor add-ins. read more

Mexicali is the BEST! My favorite meal is an "extra" bean burrito with both black & pinto, a little rice, topped off with a little sweet pork and cheese for flavor, and both white & red sauce inside & out. I also request red onion and cilantro added inside. Tonight I tried the enchiladas and they were amazing, too. The only thing we don't recommend is the soup, since it's microwaved. :P But everything else is FRESH!!!! Another family fav is the raspberry limeade! OH MY!!! read more

Had a very disappointing experience and customer service was lacking. I placed an online order and my husband picked it up on his way from Denver. We live 20 minutes away from the Johnstown store. I started to dig in to my smothered burrito only to find that it had pork (I ordered bean and cheese because I'm vegetarian). I called to get a replacement and staff told me I could drive back for a new one but they wouldn't refund my order. No apology and no offer to make it right to fix their mistake. The store manager was very rude about the situation. We supported this store a lot during the pandemic. Last time we go there. read more

Hit this place everytime we travel North. Homemade tortillas, good menu and well prepared and decent portions. Never had any issues with staff. Only wish they had some hard taco options, but I haven't been dissatisfied with anything. Wife and kids love it as well. read more

We decided to try this place tonite and the food was so so the girl who waited on us had about six hickeys that were dark black and blue which threw me off. Then after seeing the price for 4 people to eat not even mediocre food and the hickey was curious if you got more for your money. lol. Anyways I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone I could have went to a good Mexican restaurant and fed all of us for half the price. The portions of meat they give is horrible only enough to piss a guy off. Save your money hit up Taco Bell. Note to manager very unappealing to have a hickey covered girl running the register also you might want to check on that relationship and make sure your employee is ok because any man that would leave that many marks on a woman has some major issues. read more

This is basically a gringo knock off that calls itself a Mexican restaurant. Nothing ethnic about it. Poorly prepared, slapped together, heated in a Subway sandwich mini oven. Tasteless and served in an aluminized carry out container. Reminds me of Qdoba. The 20ish-30ish crowd seems to like it, and the openness of the place is good for smaller children...but if you're looking for a Mexican restaurant go somewhere else. read more

Don't bother ordering curbside from Cafe Mexicali. We sat waiting for our food for 25 minutes while at least 20 groups of people went through the line and got their food. When we went in to check on our food, it had been just sitting on the counter. Clearly, they don't care about serving people who actually order ahead. They shouldn't offer an online ordering/curbside service if they can't provide said service. read more

Simply one of the best Tacos I've ever had. Fish tacos were awesome especially the sauce over the top. I'm so glad I ran into this place. During my week stay here, I came here everyday for lunch and tried most of their tacos and they are all delicious. Their Fresh Raspberry Lime drink is out of this world! My family and a friend went into to grab a quick bite, we have all been here before and enjoyed it so we all decided we would get some burritos. we got 4 smothered burritos, since the virus it was to go. My daughter paid for the meal. She paid on her card and I left the tip in cash. Since I left cash she clicked no tip on the option on the computer. They packaged up our food and we were on our way, when we were about to eat they did not label any containers so we had no idea whose food was whose. We figured it out and the food was as good as we remembered. Once my daughter got home and she checked her bank account. They had adjusted the total and added an extra $10. I am assuming for the tip, which i left cash. Now she has to call her bank to adjust the tip they decided to add. We were disappointed they had done this because we enjoy their food. We will not return now that they are taking it upon themselves to tip instead of being aware of what is going on at the cash register. read more

This location is incredibly slow. I've been attributing it to possibly having new staff which would be fine... they're still learning, but today, a Saturday evening, I noticed something unacceptable. There's a very long line, maybe a 25 minute line, and one of the workers is literally just standing there and talking to other workers. He's literally just standing there with this huge line of people waiting. He wears glasses, has a beard and a grey shirt (not sure if mexicali differentiates staff by their shirts). This is just unacceptable. The Fort Collins location is much better. read more
