My husband and I went there this past Saturday evening. We live in MI, but were staying in southbend so we made reservations at this restaurant. This place did not disappoint, it was absolutely delicious. Beautiful building and they pay attention to small details. The food was outstanding. I ordered the lobster risotto and my husband had a pasta with a vodka sauce. Only thing was, was that the creme brulee didn't have a crunch top later, it was very very soft but still delicious. Came here during my graduation weekend with my family. They were able to accommodate us at the last minute because Lasalle Grill was incredibly rude to us. They sat our party of five at a nice quiet table in the back right around their opening for dinner. The front of the restaurant was lively with people sitting at the bar enjoying drinks. They had a very nice cocktail list, but we ordered a bottle of red wine. While I didn't love their vegetarian/vegan entree option because I'm not a fan of tempeh or edamame, I ordered a soup and salad and enjoyed the small gnocchi plate as my entree. It was FANTASTIC. Everything was cooked perfectly and the tastes were delicious. My family was very impressed with their choices as well. Their hummus, while non-traditional, was amazing! Served with warm grilled pita. Our server was wonderful as well. Constantly checking over us and making sure everything was up to par, which it definitely was. I loved the dessert list, but we were so full we couldn't squeeze any sweets. All in all, a fantastic experience in South Bend which isn't all too common. I had high expectations for this restaurant but unfortunately, they were not met. Upon arrival, I was so excited to see the busy atmosphere, high ceilings and everyone dining. Our server was wonderful, but the food was mediocre. What we ordered: Small plates (1) Hummus - I enjoyed the smokiness of this dish (2) Gnocchi (Vegetarian version) - This was dry, chewy and lacking in flavor and depth. We later decided to add the pancetta and that made the dish better, but it still wasn't as great as we'd hope (3) Mussels - Contained lardon and corn. I really didn't need the corn there Mains (1) Bouilabaisse - Although this is something that I'd typically love, the sauce wasn't as rich and dynamic as I expected it to be. It lacked the richness and flavor profile that I wanted (2) Cauliflower - Very hard texture and nearly raw. All of the other vegetables were fine Our server noticed that we didn't finish the Cauliflower main and gave us a free Pumpkin dessert. That was quite tasty. The menu, overall, looked inviting and made me want to try everything but the food preparation was not great. Not my favorite restaurant in South Bend. read more

Nothing I would recommend. Our server was very nice and did a great job but the food was lacking. I have had better steaks from Martin's on my grill then they made. My veggie were over cooked and they are tight on veggie servings. I got one carrot cut in half long ways and 2 spears of asparagus. I seen on reviews about how great their French onion soup is. Incredibly disappointing. The meal started off with lukewarm onion soup with solid "melted" cheese on top. This issue was resolved after they replaced it with an appropriately hot plate and was otherwise decent. The brussels sprouts were another disappointment: tasteless, breaded (ick) and covered with what tasted like buffalo sauce. I ordered the steak frites and that was the crowning disappointment: lukewarm at best, extremely chewy/tough with cold Béarnaise on top while the fries where oily, cold and tasteless. After talking to our server, a replacement dish arrived 10-15 min later (at which point I had lost my appetite) and was barely a few degrees hotter than the preceding dish. The server appropriately took the steak dish off our bill but otherwise our table was not visited by the manager. The only positives: good service and a decent wine selection. read more

The #mussels were light and pleasantly served in a garlic and white wine broth. My friend delighted in a french onion #gratinee but honestly, I could never say no to gruyere. The highlight starter was the #duckconfit atop an apple butter puree and lightly sprinkled with pistachios. The protein was prepared well with plenty of smokiness and flavor. I opted for the simply prepared and tasteful porkchop with pepperonata sauce and potatoes while my other friend went for the highly recommended tenderloin medallions in a cognac and madeira veal demi. The popular main plate at our table was the baked chicken carbonara loaded with pancetta, peas, egg, and cavatapi pasta. To sweeten our palates we ended our wonderful meal with the classic creme brulee. It was my first time dining in this establishment. The ambiance was modern and simple. The service was wonderful as well. There was only one issue we had, and reason for four stars rather than five. When we first sat down we informed the waitress of my food allergies. When she brought us desserts she switched them on accident which caused me to take a bite of the wrong dessert, thus giving me allergic reaction that lasted a few days. My wife and I have been to Cafe Navarre many times, each have been met with great food and service. Last night after an event down town SB, my wife and I stopped by for a quick bite. She had the mushroom soup and beet salad, and I had the Navarre salad with a piece of blackened salmon on top of it. Though the beat salad was lacking much goat cheese, the thing that caught my attention was the cost of my salad. Approximately $12.00 got the salad, and then $35.00 for the salmon topper? Seriously? If I knew that I was going to pay the entire meal price for the topper, I would have ordered the salmon meal and had the chance to enjoy the sides etc. I have ordered this many times for lunch and it is reasonably priced, but this seemed excessive. read more
