My friends and I were excited to try this restaurant on a trip to Frederick. Overall, the meals were a bit disappointing. I ordered the smoked hash with tempeh - it lacked a variety of flavors and textures, and I would have preferred a crispy hash. My friends also felt the their meals were lacking. I did enjoy the coffee, however. I ordered the Garden Rose latte which was delicious. The atmosphere was good but a bit too loud and cramped. The food was bad, the coffee was bad, the service was bad, the decor is bad. I'm struggling to find nice things to say about this place. My buddy and I got "coffee rubbed steak and eggs" which translated to gritty, flavorless steak and cold undercooked eggs. The coffee was bad -- like burnt gas station coffee bad. The decor was apparently picked out by some satanic entity -- not the devil because the devil at least has the good taste to wear Prada. This is not a matter of subjective taste, the art and the design of the place was objectively ugly even by the low low standard of postmodernity. I cannot express my disappointment enough. The server lackadaisically roamed the room avoiding eye contact as if to avoid any sort of interaction with patrons. And to top the whole mediocre experience off, my buddy pulled a literal hair right off of his plate. 0/10 do not recommend. P.S. I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings here. Cafe Nola is one of my favorite places in Frederick! It's good for brunch and great for late night drinks. Their specialty is their infusion drinks which are always changing! This past time I visited, I had a strawberry rhubarb vodka mix. It was delicious! It doesn't have a ton of space so get there early, but it's worth it! They sometimes have live bands as well. We have talked about trying this cafe out for a long time. They are usually crowded, at least when we drive by. So it must be good, right? We arrived mid-morning and there was a line. We put our name and phone number in, then went to the bar to order coffees while we waited. The coffee was quite good. We were seated after around 20 minutes. The table was somewhat wiped down, but a sticky area revealed the previous patrons had something with syrup. The staff for the most part seemed to be generally annoyed and didn't mind showing it. No pleasant smiles or friendly greeting. There seemed to be an atmosphere of disdain and threadbare tolerance. After several minutes a waitress stopped to ask our order. We both decided on the vegan hash brown skillet...$17 each so we had high hopes of it being either spectacular or huge. It was neither. In fact it was underwhelming. If it weren't for the spicy vegan sausage bits it wouldn't have had much flavor. It was served in a piping hot *small* cast iron skillet. The serving size was based loosely on what I estimate being 1-1 1/2 cups of hash browns, some spicy vegan sausage bits, and a delicate sprinkle of vegan cheese shreds. There was no accompanying toast, biscuit, fruit, or other. The reason for three stars instead of one - I think that some of their dishes must be great, given their patronage. So maybe if we ever try it again I'll need to try something else. Next, their coffee is great. And finally, the male employee with long hair & beard is great customer service, he made us feel welcome. read more

I am writing to share a negative experience I had at Cafe Nola on 5/12/24. My husband, nine year old son, and I were visiting Frederick for a joint celebration of Mother's Day and our wedding Anniversary. We completed a nearby escape room and come Cafe Nola around 8:10 pm for a quick bite to eat to cap off our weekend. When we arrived, I asked if they could accommodate a table of 3 (understanding that this may not be possible on the evening of Mother's Day). Our server indicated that we could be server, but shared that the kitchen was closing in about 15 minutes. I immediately asked if it would be okay for us to order food - as I come from a family of restaurant servers, and am always careful not to overextend staff. The server graciously stated that would be "no big deal", and then seated us. We ordered our food, and settled in. After the food arrived, she returned to the table and informed us that the restaurant would shift to "bar mode" in less than 30 minutes (at 9 pm), and that my 9 year old would need to leave by this time due to restaurant policies. The server initially indicated that the restaurant may be somewhat lenient to allow my child to finish eating. I am big on following rules, so we decided not to push things, and immediately shifted to eating faster to accommodate. We also asked for "to go" boxes to pack up food we couldn't eat in time, in order to be accommodating. Wheb the server returned to the table I indicated that it would have been helpful to know about the time limit before being seated and ordering food. We would not have chosen to eat at Cafe Nola if we had known. She did not apologize, and instead became argumentative stating that she "told us the kitchen was closing, and that there was a sign indicating that the restaurant would shift to 21 and older bar mode". She did not apologize and essentially tossed to-go boxes on the table next to us. My son was finishing up his cheeseburger, and so I politely asked if we might have a few extra minutes for him to finish. She responded that restaurant policy was very strict and that we needed to leave. Instead of eating my dinner, I quickly packed up my food so that we could exit by the 9 pm deadline. Taking cold food home is not how I wanted to end my celebratory weekend - but I was willing to accommodate. On the way out, I walked up to where the server was speaking with a colleague and asks if there was a manager on duty that I could speak with about the unfortunate situation. She indicated that a manager was not available and said "it's 9'pm You need to leave" - which was a truly unexpected response. I shared that I understand that mistakes happen, but that's she should have indicated the 9 pm issue before seating us. She did not apologize, but rather continued to argue with me. I was shocked at her behavior and choosing to avoid apologizing for a genuine mistake. I am not someone who frequently "asks to speak to the manager", and I double checked that it would be okay for my family to order food with the kitchen closing early. We had backup options if Cafe Nola didn't work, and we never want to do anything to overextend restaurant staff if we can help it. The fact remains that our server reassured us that it would be no problem to sit and order food at the time of our arrival. She did not share the 21 and older policy until after our food arrived - leaving us stressed as my autistic son rushed to eat his food (and I had to pack mine to go). I am now on my way home, ending my celebratory weekend in tears based on the poor treatment I received - the likes of which I can't remember but ever experiencing. I am left feeling that the customer is "wrong" at Cafe Nola - and I would not wish this experience on anyone. I truly recommend that your staff have some retraining on managing situations such as this, so that this doesn't happen to another family. Regarding the food - I ordered a Reuben sandwich which I wasn't able to eat in the restaurant due to this negative experience, so I can't speak to its quality. I was able to eat a Greek salad before leaving - which was delicious (justifying the 2 stars). read more

Love this spot for a chill coffee and brunch in downtown Frederick. They use good quality coffee and espresso which comes across well in their lattes (fig & honey is my fave with housemade syrup!) Brunch options are fairly typical-- eggs benny, shrimp & grits, hashes, etc. However, it is obvious that each dish is made with care and full of quality ingredients. Take for example the Migas. For $13 you get a mountain of eggs, cheese, onion, pepper, refried beans, avocado, and tortillas. This was my fave dish we ordered. The smoked hash comes in a close second, but wasn't as flavorful as the Migas. Interestingly enough, the Migas is one of the cheaper breakfast items and as such is probably the best bang for your buck. Next time I stop in I might just have to try the shrimp & grits, because yum. read more

I used to really love this place, but the last few times I've gone have left me disappointed. On my two most recent visits, the food and service left something to be desired. On our last visit, despite not being very busy, our service was really slow. It appeared maybe only one person was working front of house. When our food came, it was sub par, especially for the price. My sandwich was 18 dollars and it was a sloppy mess and only came with store bought chips- really? My husband's sweet potato fries (which cost extra) were almost inedible. To top things off, an employee accidentally blasted us with a water sprayer while working behind the bar and didn't even notice. We also had to wait about 15 minutes after telling our server we wanted a box and our check. Again, there were very few other patrons. I have only been to Cafe Nola once but am DYING to come back to try more of the menu. We came in on a somewhat busy Sunday and were seated immediately (although with how popular this place is, a wait wouldn't be a surprise). Service here is fantastic -- so friendly and fast. The menu is decently sized and not overwhelming. We ordered: Almond milk latte, cold brew, fried chicken sandwich, and black been wrap. The latte was very good, and I can tell that anything coffee-based from here will be good. The cold brew also got rave reviews. My black bean wrap was INCREDIBLE. I loved every single bite. There is tons of flavor on that thing. The chicken sandwich was also well-liked (and totally devoured). We didn't try anything else but are eager to return for mixed drinks and other entrees (especially the portobello grilled cheese, which we wanted this time but they'd unfortunately run out of the jam). The menu is extremely varied and has tons of options for vegans and vegetarians as well as meat-eaters. A+! Would absolutely recommend. read more

Lived in Frederick for years and always hear great things about Cafe Nola. Finally came here with the fam for brunch. Waiter was super nice! I started off with a bloody mary (pretty average bloody mary but it hit the spot). Family got cappicunos or some fancy drink where they swirl the white cream into the drink?? They seemed to enjoy their drink as well. First we got the crab dip. It came with tortilla chips and it was sizzling hot when it came out. nice starter and it was a pretty big portion that filled us up. I ordered the B's and G's. I always order sausage gravy when I see it on the menu so today was no different. I saw there was a vegetarian option for the gravy and remembered hearing great things about it. I couldn't let go of the meat option just yet so I asked the waiter if I could do half and half of each gravy. He said yes! and it was AMAZING! Love this creamy richness with the biscuits. Lovely combination and I would come back for this dish 100%. Would highly recommend this dish :) Fam got the steak and eggs, softshell crab sandwich, and lox benedict. Cafe Nola has a hipster vibe that is welcoming and fun. We appreciated the fact that there are no TVs thus making you talk and enjoy one another's company (or not haha)! We all enjoyed our meal. My friend who I went with frequently goes and says she always gets the smoked hash which did look great! I enjoyed my sausage and cheese croissant sandwich and tomato bisque soup. Nola does have occasional live music at night. It's not the best design for controlling the sound so they do provide earplugs. read more

ITALIAN BENEDICT I ordered this egg benedict and asked for no meat and if they could replace it with extra potatoes, they did! Eggs benedict, pesto, and potatoes! Three of my favorite foods in one meal, whats not to love? Maybe the coffee I ordered with it :/ COLD BREW w/ peppermint syrup: I ordered a cold brew with peppermint syrup and almond milk. I thought they would put it in for me, but it was in a cute small cup on the side. The amount of almond milk was barely a shot of almond milk, not enough milk for me. I tried getting more milk, but our waiter seemed to disappear for some time. He eventually came back and brought me more milk, but he seemed highly annoyed at me for asking for more milk. I'm sorry I like a little more milk in my coffee?? Not sure if I would drive all the way to Frederick for this brunch place, it did not blow me away with the eggs benedict and definitely not with their coffee. I'm a little confused as to why this place was hyped? Did I ordered wrong? The service was subpar, and so was the food. We had a large party, the person at front podium told us we were not allowed to move tabs, that it can be one check with 20% gratuity. She was very unpleasant and told us the above stipulations 3 times in a rude tone. Once our group all arrived (with baby in a stroller) said said we could not sit in our original location, that half the group had to move to different area due to the stroller. At this point we left. Found a restaurant called Bagel and Beans! Great food. While there a woman in line said she was a Cafe Nola when we were there.
