Nothing special... Someone said that when we were in Frederick that we needed to try the milkshakes at Maxwell's. We were and we did. On the plus side was the pleasant staff. The kids that were working there seemed like they enjoyed their jobs. I also liked that the restrooms were spotless. On the negative side was that the place was cramped and dingy. And, there were also some foul, food-related, smells on the way the the spotless restroom. And, on the "meh" side was the milkshake itself. I ordered a strawberry shake. A friend and I stopped at Maxwell's on a Saturday night for a bite to eat around 7 pm. All tables were full, but we quickly got a spot once a few folks left. We ordered a beef burger with a side of sweet tots and the steakhouse burger with mac & cheese as the side. We shared all things and they were all delicious. The beet burger was suggested by a fellow customer and I'm so glad I listened to her. I was different and the texture was minced and not sliced. The flavor combo was awesome and out of the ordinary. The steakhouse burger was also fantastic. It was a great burger, but still a burger. So I was definitely a 5 out of 5, but the beet burger won the trip for me. Maxwell's serves really good burgers that rivals Five Guys, especially with their rosemary fries that are much lighter than the burger chain's. I ordered the monthly special milkshake which was the chocolate fang-cake shake. The pieces of chocolate cake in the shake provided a bit of texture and the chocolate was nice and velvety. The fries had a great flavor and were crispy. I saved them for later and they were still edible - not like typically fries that become soggy with no taste. The burger was thick and very juicy. I gave four stars instead of five because my order didn't come out exactly right. The burger was cooked medium well instead of medium temperature and I didn't get any raw onions on my burger as requested. Also, there was whip cream on my shake when I asked for it to be removed. Otherwise, I would certainly order again the next time I'm in Frederick. read more

A fantastic place to eat great food in a unique and casual atmosphere. There were parents with kids, a business meeting, and a few of us solo diners. Let's start with the food. OMG. I ordered six piece nugs and sweet potato fries, and it was so much food for the money!!! I was honestly expecting the run of the mill nuggets and sweet potato fries. Nope!!! The breading on the Nuggets is a unique combination of herbs that they make in house and the sweet potato tots are equally unique (accented with cinnamon!!!!) and delicious. Both the chicken and the sweet potatoes were freshly made. Atmosphere ....The people who work here are constantly in motion and check in to make sure that you're having a good experience and really know the food and can answer all sorts of questions as I watched people ahead of me inquire about things. I used to have lunch at an establishment that is steps away from Maxwell's stopped going there once I realized that people that are in my family are not welcome or supported by their owners. Maxwell's in contrast is an inclusive, artistic and an amazingly community oriented establishment which is evident by the local featured art (which you can purchase), the numerous posters, advertising community nonprofit/awareness/services available, and most of all evident through the dedicated head chef, Stacy Cross. I happen to be in on a midday Wednesday. She was casually sitting and working on her laptop, but not missing a beat to check in with the different customers to make sure that they were enjoying their food. After meeting her, I can understand why everything tasted so good because clearly she loves what she does, is customer oriented, and talented chef. Great spot. We parked in nearby parking garage and walked over which was nice to see all the different stores along the way. Enjoyed a burger after tubing at Harper's Ferry. Can't go wrong here, Max's burgers and shakes serves upscale house made version of fast food items like burgers, nuggets, grilled cheese and fish sandwiches. My fish sandwich had house made remoulade and slaw on a brioche bun. It was wonderful. I had a side of kale with bacon bits. The bacon was not noticeable and the side was spicy but i enjoyed it. My wife did not enjoy the chicken nuggets. The nuggets were very far from fast food nuggets, these nuggets are bigger, juicier and have a different flavor and texture. One of my favorite burger places in Frederick. Not much interaction with staff so there not much service. It's half a restaurant so seating is tight. The sodas are not good. It's the old fashion blah drinks. If they offered normal drinks I think they would do better. Some niches are good but that ain't one of them. This is such a darling burger and shake joint! The milkshakes were soooo delicious. The kitchen somehow found a recipe that wasn't too heavy but still offered that creamy and rich milkshake consistency. We were heading to check out an art show in Frederick and needed a place to eat. My mom looked up restaurants above a four star rating and she found this place. I have to say the space is skinny and long so not really a lot of room. There were 10 tables in the space, we sat at the table looking out the window. You order at the back of restaurant and they give you a number to put on your table. The guy that brought out the food was super nice and engaging. Omg the food I built my own burger with pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, and pickles it was sooooo delicious. The fries were outstanding and could just eat a whole plate of them to my self. They were well seasoned. I will definitely be going back there soon. This place was great. We got 2 milkshakes, and they were both delish... but that maple pecan milkshake might have been my all time favorite milkshake ever. It had chunks of pecan pie IN THE MILKSHAKE. The staff was super friendly, service was great. The place is a little small, so it's hard to get around.. but people move quick so it worked out. The burgers were good. Got a maxx stack, which had tons of cheese... husband got the smokehouse which was a little spicier than expected.. good flavor. He ask for it medium.. but it did come out a little undercooked, but we were full from the milkshakes so it worked out. The maxx sauce was really good with the fries. Stopped by on my way home with a friend. The staff was super amazing - very professional, courteous and kind. As soon as we walked in, we were attended too. We were seated, provided water and time to review the menu. Our waiters explained the menu and options. The food looked amazing! The only downside was that I asked for a medium well burger and it was all pink in the inside; very unfortunate. We ended up trying their shakes, it was a nice dessert. Arguably one of the best burgers I've had, a function of good quality ingredients, friendly folks at the counter and swinging by to check on us, and a sense that the food was prepared rather than assembled. Intangibles, I reckon, but there you go. Even loaded fries had real cheese and bacon not bits and "sauce". Far from a cheap lunch but you get what you pay for in portion and in quality. Recommended. We have lived in Frederick a while and tried Maxwell's when they first opened but have not been back. Not for any real reason just don't eat out for lunch as much. In any case tried them today and it was awesome. I had the build your own burger which was perfect - great bread and cooked just right. The best burger I can remember having in a while. My wife had a salad which she liked as well. Service was friendly and attentive. We are moving within the city and our new location will be about a 3 minute walk from Maxwell's - we will be back for sure. read more

Best burger in town. I always tell my friends that if it wasn't for the holy grail - aka cheeseburger, I could become a vegetarian...and this place only makes me feel more passionate about it!! This burger tasted like it came right off the grill, and the patty was not too thick and cooked to perfection- I topped it with smoked cheddar, fried onions, lettuce, pickle...and unlike most burgers - it held together the entire time. My family and I made a stop to Maxwell's Burgers and Shakes to grab a bite to eat yesterday evening. As we walked in, if dining in, you seat yourselves. There was plenty of seating and it's definitely a casual family friendly dining vibe. We were able to be seated right away and were greeted by a server who took our drink orders. The menu items were most locally organic items. So we ordered a root beer, which made from a locally organic fountain soda. There's even a nice selection of draft beers, wines, cocktails, and milkshakes. My husband ordered the Steakhouse burger and I ordered the Large Maxx burger, which came with a side order of fresh cut fries. My 8 year old son ordered the chicken nuggets and fries, which was made fresh, and it didn't seem like it was made from a frozen bag of nuggets. There are some vegan options on the menu too, like a beet burger. The burgers were definitely made fresh locally sourced meat, and was a good size burger that left us satisfied. Even the burger buns are made fresh. Another bonus about this restaurant, is that it was reasonably priced compared to dining at Five Guys. When we are in the local downtown Frederick area, this is definitely a spot worth trying if you're in the mood for a good burger and wanting a casual dining option. read more

The wagyu patty is delicious and moist and they have an efficient ordering system that allows them to get food to their customers quickly since they don't have a lot of room for people to sit. Burgers and chicken sandwich were good, but the blue cheese on my burger was dressing and not real cheese. The cheddar was fine, but not melted enough (Maxwell's take note). Also, the fries were a little soggy and seasoned weirdly; my daughter liked her tator tots. The chocolate milkshake lacked any discernible flavor. The meal was very pricey for a burger joint, but so is Five Guys and everywhere else! Two stars because the food was tasty, but incredibly expensive. But the tiny claustrophobic space really kills the rating. It is not a good space for an eatery/dining and the 5 or so tables fill up within minutes of opening.
