I've been coming here for many years. They're wonderful. You can't go wrong no matter what you order. My only gripe is that after all these years, they're still a cash only establishment. If you're like me and prefer making everyday purchases on a credit card for points, rewards and travel, then daily trips here aren't going to help you; best they do is force you to become reacquainted with the local ATM. Lines can be long and croissants seem to disappear quite fast between 8am and 10am. I recommend arriving early and with cash in hand. read more

I can't believe this place is still here and just as PERFECT! I had a crepe with bananas, chocolate and whipped cream. The crepes are the real deal, handmade right in front of you on a hot plate. It isn't summer in Rehoboth until we've ridden our bikes down to Cafe Papillon in the morning. One of us stops at Lingo's to get a newpaper, another waits for a patio table to become available, and the third gets in line to wait to order. There are two windows, one for baked goods and drinks, the other only for crepes, which you watch being prepared. We tend to end up in the crepe line. I usually stick with the fresh-squeezed lemon and sugar, although when peaches are in season that one is tempting. Ham, cheese and tomato is quite filling but still a bit delicate. Good coffee makes the morning meal complete. This establishment was begun in the early '70's on another street by two French women who made RB their summer business location. They still hire French kids to come run the place in the summer. read more

Found this little place one morning and endured the line which is long and constant from 8:00 am thru lunch. Very much worth the wait. There is one line for croissants/coffee and one line for crepes. If you are going for the crepes bring your own coffee otherwise you will have to wait in two very long lines. Something papillon should address. Going back next time we come to Rehoboth. Amazing crepes, have been here several times. As others have mentioned the line can be long, with a wait 30-45 minutes... but well worth it. They have a take out window only with a few outdoor tables. You might get nervous to see that all the tables are taken, but as people eat they will leave quickly. Crepe can be shared but can eat a whole one with a good appetite. Favorites for dessert are the lemon and strawberry/Nutella/whipped cream... for savory the ham/egg/cheese/tomato. Hit or miss for the long line, sometimes you can come back and the line will be pretty short. Came around 10pm for dessert crepes and we waited about 10 minutes. read more

Hidden in charming Penny Lane, right off Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach is one of America's best French bakeries and creperies featuring outstanding croissants, baguettes, crepes, desserts, and drinks. This small local shop is run by a French couple who learned their trade in France's Brittany province. Everything is fresh made, created with the finest ingredients, and absolutely sumptuous. We have been coming here for 30+ years. My husband, who lived in France and has a French mother, insists we make a pilgrimage here several times yearly so we can have these exquisite treats and order quantities to take home, eat, and freeze. This food is worth a major detour. Be warned that there are other fast food joints in Rehoboth masquerading as creperies. Accept no substitutes for Café Papillon. The price is the same, however, only Café Papillon produces sumptuous and authentic handmade French crepes. The other places treat soggy pancakes as a if they were tortilla shells for filling for any odd combination of elements, most of which are rather nasty. Café Papillon creates a true fine dining French experience at a bargain price. You can find a wide range of croissants here including cheese, chocolate, plain, ham, cheese, hand and cheese, etc. The crepes come in an even wider range of flavors from the traditional fruit and jam crepes (such as lemon, sugar, chocolate, jams) to authentic savory crepes which serve as a whole meal (smoked salmon, egg, egg and cheese, egg and tomato, etc). There is something for every taste here. Also consider buying a traditional baguette to take home. They are excellent. This restaurant has several very charming seating areas wrapped around a small potted garden. There is one side with umbrellas and a number of tables with chairs. The opposite side of the seating fits between the creperie and the bakery halves of the restaurant. Both sections are lovely places to catch your breath; eat something exquisite for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or high tea; and listen to the music and the ocean. The food is outstanding. There are also excellent coffee, tea, and juices. This is one of Rehoboth Beach's hidden gems. Don't miss it. read more

My favorite spot in my favorite beach town, this place is a gem. Yes, there are often long waits, because it is that good. Two people (typically students directly from France here for the summer) will make your crepes in front of you. There is also another counter for coffee, croissants, sandwiches and pastries. There have been some knock off crepe places popping up in town... but I only go to cafe papillon as it's superb. I've never had a bad experience with the food here and I've been coming to Rehoboth for MANY years. This is as authentic as it gets. If they were open in the off season I'd be making the trip more often. read more

Nestled away less than a block from the beach on a quaint little side-strip called Penny Lane, there sits a French Cuisine Gem. We hit this place at every opportunity. They offer so much more than Croissants, brioche, crepes, cappuccino's & mocha lattes. They offer genuine French hospitality and cuisine. We were fortunate to meet at our latest visit the owner Maya, her daughter and her husband. They were all about pleasing their customers. We actually stayed an extra night at our hotel only to enjoy their Crepes and hospitality before we left. I hit it off with Maya when seeing that she supported all the other business in the area while striving to make their place the best it can be. I wouldn't hesitate to spend the money for another night again to hit this place before leaving. I heard they will be open weekends through Sea Witch weekend. I love the croissants at Cade Papillon in Penny Lane and since I spend the summers here I go quite often. However, today marked the 3rd time I have been overcharged. I have caught them twice and they corrected it, but despite the fact that I am ordering 3-4 pastries only and they are ringing it up on a register, I am charged $2-3 more than I should be. I am now in the habit of knowing the price of the purchase up front. How difficult can it be to figure out the price of 4 pastries at $3.50 each? I could understand if I purchased coffees, juice, etc. but that isn't the case. Prices posted were $3.50 for each croissant- I get 4= $14.00 as there is no tax. Where they come up with $16.60 or more is a puzzler. And it isn't busy when I come. read more

This place is as much about atmosphere and ambience as it is about crepes, which are incidentally delicious. Tucked away in a narrow, little alley, "Penny Lane," Cafe Papillon is surrounded by cute shops, and has a vaguely French feel in the outside seating area (emphasis on "vaguely"). French students make the crepes, and seem to enjoy making a show of it, and engaging in chit chat at the same time. Went here for lunch based on recommendations from both yelp and a guidebook. Maybe the crepes and croissants are good, but the sandwiches are terrible and nothing like what what you'd get in France. I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich, which was basically two slices of ham on a stale baguette topped with 1/2 pound of shredded cheese (wtf?), lettuce, tomato, shredded carrots, and a mustard vinaigrette. The crepes were OK. The service was slow- luckily there wasn't much of a line when we arrived. The prices were much higher than I expected for very simple toppings. I live in DC, so I know what a touristy expensive crepe usually costs, but the price per extra topping on these still seemed a bit high. I guess that's what you get for the location! When we return to Rehoboth, we'll probably try something else a little further off the beaten path. read more

Great place in "Penny Lane." Be sure to arrive early (7:30 a.m for 8 a.m opening). Lines are long, but well worth the wait. Crepes are made fresh to order, not pre-made like many other Rehoboth options. Croissants are delicious, fresh & flaky. I give this place four stars because it does seem that service could be more efficient. Open daily through Labor Day then weekends through the end of October. Please check this place out as this summer's extremely hot temperatures has kept customers away. We would hate to see Cafe Papillion close due to lack of business. read more
