From the latees in giant bowls to the huevos MOTULEÑOS we shared (generous portions). My hat is OFF to Jesus the pastry chef! He is hidden in the back... but his creations speak for themselves. He makes ALL the bread, crackers & desserts. Even the toast was unique & delicious (seeded bread with teff flour). It takes THREE DAYS to make! They sell loaves of it! We wanted to give this place another chance because it's an institution (and near and dear to one of our hearts), so we thought that our friends--who have never been to SF before--should experience it. We made the first seating reservation at 5:30 pm and it STILL took forever to get seated and served. This place has THE WORST SERVICE. It's so small and there are plenty of workers milling about so it's almost kinda mind-boggling how it is that they manage never to do anything well as far as customer service. Margaritas here are oddly opaque. We actually managed to snag some breadsticks this time, and they are pretty good. The food took F-O-R-E-V-E-R to come out. 45 minutes, minimum. The lentil stew was unimpressive and the chicken in the mole enchiladas was dry (the sauce was something special though). Honestly, once again, they win with the soup: their turkey meatball special was perfect on a cold night even if the meatballs were disintegrating. The best thing about this place is dessert, and we were not sparing. Pinon ice cream again FTW! It's sooooo good. The date shake was is a favorite so of course we needed to get that, as well as the chocolate pot de creme, which wasn't too sweet. Our friend loved the apple pie, and while that genre of dessert isn't usually our jam, it did taste good. This is the same sentiment that we expressed last time, but this place could be The Best Experience ever with better service and management (front AND back of house), but because they're always so busy, nothing will ever change. For many years I have been coming to this area to visit family and did not know this hidden gem existed. Now that I have discovered it, it will become a destination next time I'm in town. The establishment is compact in many ways so get ready to enjoy the company of others at the community table or just to maneuver around. Even the mens restroom is compact (see picture) (can't comment on the ladies). I do know that you have to walk sideways down that hall. The food was fantastic, many choices were to be had. One of the daily specials was so popular the server had to check to see if any were left. Only one was available so our group had to draw straws to see who could order it. Because we were all family there is never an issue sharing or just grabbing something off some ones plate. They do have times when they shut down to regroup between meal times. This place was mentioned in almost every blog I read when I was planning my trip to NM so we had to try it. Plan ahead esp on a weekend as they don't take reservations and you have to get your name on a waitlist. We waited for around 45 min for a community table seat but there's plenty to do around here so after you get your name on, take a stroll around the plaza. I ordered the Chicken Breast sandwich and the wife ordered Vegetarian Tacos. The portions were huge. My sandwich was really good and I honestly liked the tacos too (though I've had better) but they were too bland for my wife who didn't enjoy it as much. Since the portions were huge, we could only try two of their menu items. We may try something else on our next trip! read more

My memories of rich flavors are what make me think of going to Cafe Pasqual's as soon as I even consider booking my airfare to New Mexico. The staff is so friendly that we feel like we're having breakfast at a friend's home, and Abuela's cooking, and Abuela is so cool! The portions are large enough to stick with you, to share, and on one visit, I even took the other half of my Breakfast Burrito with me for the flight home. Yum! Based on our experience, I have no idea what makes this place so popular. We came in a group of 6 for my birthday, having made reservations, and were put in a tight booth, which was very disappointing. A couple people in our group liked the food but most did not. Mine, the mole enchiladas, was, I'm sorry, inedible. It was all quite pricey, which of course makes the disappointment more painful. My partner really liked his mole enchiladas, so I am going to keep this review higher than I would make it otherwise. I'll also say the ambiance, service and quality of ingredients are top-notch. I ordered the "Three Sister's Stew," (Criolla , Patty Pan Squashes, Pursalane, Quelite, Black Beans and Grilled Corn with Tomatillo Sauce, Cotija Cheese, Squash Blossom Queso Oaxaca Quesadilla) which was good, but with the base being chopped squash, it's not something I'd think of as a stew. It also had beans, avocado and a quesadilla with cheese. It was good, but $26 is a bit steep for something that more in line with a salad. The portion was decent and I left some of the cucumbers uneaten. Tasty, but not entirely satisfying to me. The other dish in our group was Cochinita Pabil Yucatan Style (Organic Pork Slow Cooked in Achiote and Orange wrapped in a Banana Leaf, Calabacitas, Cilantro Rice, Habanero~Marinated Onions, Tostones with Crema ) I don't eat pork, but she thought it was overcooked and only ate a small amount of it. Came here 3 years ago and had the best experience. Unfortunately this week I went back and will not go again. Service was pretty terrible. I do feel bad because it seems as though the waitress was just covering too many tables. It took forever to get our order in and when we finally did get to talk to the waitress, our order came out in about 2 minutes and was wrong. I was convinced it was the wrong meal. There were also little homemade cheese it's on the table and it looked like the plate it was on was either dirty or the people sitting there before us had eaten on it. The tables were so crammed together it felt a little uncomfortable. The food was the most disappointing part because as far as service goes I understand they are likely just understaffed. I got the veggie enchiladas and my partner got the stir fry with tofu. They cost nearly $30 each and I felt like I could have done a better job making them at home. I got the huevos rancheros with barbacoa, it was delicious. The barbacoa was cooked perfectly! And of course I had to have dessert, so I ordered their French Toast which was another masterpiece. My husband's meal was good but they put little scrapes of salmon, instead of a full piece like the other yelp photos I've seen. So I am not sure what happened there. I visited Cafe Pasqual many years ago while I was on a business trip, as I was driving cross country this summer I could not miss the chance to make a detour to one of my favorite breakfast establishments. I was nervous that it had changed since the last time I visited or perhaps my memory was clouded with all the years that had elapsed. Cafe Pasqual does not take reservations, so get there early or be prepared to wait for a table outside. The gentleman taking the reservations is warm and welcoming and typically the wait is not that long as there are many tables in the restaurant, the service is fast, not rushed, so you should be in and out in a timely manner. The reason we returned was for the Huevos Rancheros: organic eggs, black beans, organic corn tortillas, melted jack, scallions done Xmas style half red sauce half green sauce. The layers of flavor in this dish, guided by locally, sustainable, organic ingredients is what their menu is all about. We also had the Huevos Motulenos, which sounded interesting: eggs, sautéed banana, feta, green peas, organic corn torillas, black beans with green sauce. Being a little apprehensive with the combination of ingredients, the sweetness of the bananas and briny feta cheese finished with the green sauce was unique and delicious Lastly we had the Chorizo Burrito: scrambled eggs, sautéed house made chorizo, jack, scallions organic whole wheat tortillas with griddled potatoes. Just in case there was a chorizo shortage we enjoyed a side of this sautéed pork with the perfect pimenton, garlic and salt seasoning. Of course to wash it all down we needed to taste a variety of their milkshakes: Espresso made with coffee ice cream, Gary's Vietnamese Avocado and Palm Springs Medjool date, cinnamon, toasted walnut and vanilla bean. Being a coffee fan, I enjoyed the coffee milkshake, the espresso lent a strong coffee flavor which I enjoyed. The avocado I was not sure what to make of it, the milkshake had the consistency of pureed avocado, however, when my mouth was looking for some relief from the pangs of heat the avocado milkshake was a welcome relief. The Medjool date shake was straight up delicious. Cafe Pasqual also serves lunch and dinner, so if you find yourself in Santa Fe, do not miss this place! read more

Solo dining perks: you probably won't have to wait for a table [like everyone else] if you don't mind rubbing elbows at the center community table. Even if you do wait, very worth it. Dropped in on a random Tuesday morning around 10am, and yes, there was still a wait (I mean, not for me, but for those who want tables). Says a lot. The food is incredibly good, yet unpretentious. The service is warm and attentive (constantly topping off our coffees as though we were dining in someone's home). The interior is cozy and meso-american eclectic with light wrapped chiles hanging down from the ceiling and local art everywhere you turn. I got the Corn Pancakes with queso salsa, mole, red chile, and maple syrup. SO GOOD. Freshly made - the pancakes had crisp edges from the griddle, studded with fresh kernals of corn, and with the sweet/savory combination of mole and syrup...it was all perfect. We are not by nature "community" people. Our private time away from daily life is, well, our private time to catch up. So grabbing a seat at the community table at Cafe Pasqual's on a busy Friday night was a bit of a challenging decision for me especially. But grab it we did and we were not disappointed. We didn't have a reservation (which appears to be an almost mandatory thing in this small eclectically designed restaurant). Good fortune that someone else failed to show up for theirs so it became ours after a short wait. The food was excellent, especially my cochinita pabil served wrapped in a banana leaf with fried plaintains, a rice mix and habanero infused onions. We know the dish from our Mexico travels, and this exceeded my expectations. Starter was a special shiitake mushroom salad with goat cheese which was large and delicious. The only down spot for the evening was unfortunately the carnitas skewers. Simply stated, on the tough side. We are spoiled: the carnitas we have in Mexico must be marinated and/or perhaps tenderized in a way different than here in the states. We have been spoiled in the past by a tender piece of what we know is a difficult piece of meat. Presentation was great. The meat itself simply didn't meet our expectations. Now about the community table in the center of the room: I am generally a private guy when dining. Tonight the more gregarious side came out: our table mates were great. The conversation flowed, we had fun and were glad to meet new friends. Perhaps that's what life should be about more often. Truly enjoyable and made the evening very memorable. And one of our new friends ordered the curry in a coconut that looked great--and I understand tasted great as well. Service was excellent and attentive. I'd always wanted to eat at Cafe Pascual and when I finally did, I didn't love my food. My partner had a nice egg dish which he loved. I got the Green Caesar. The salad was strange- maybe if they didn't call it Caesar which sets up an expectation of garlic, Parmesan m, lemon, anchovies and not a bland creamy dressing.
