During my five years in VA, one of my favorite spots to post up shop and study/get work done especially on the weekends. Don't sleep on their food menu either - they've got lots to offer although some items are pricier but especially for the area they've got a quality selection. I like their breakfast skillet which is well seasoned with crispy potatoes and bits of savory bacon but could have more to it. Their lemon bars and brownies are also very good; the brownie is very fudgy and rich. It just kinda cuts through your fork like butter. I would skip their breakfast quesadilla as it was pricey for what you actually get; it's rather simple but has a nice drizzle of hot sauce because what are eggs without hot sauce, personally? Their coffee is better than average and they've a variety of flavors/syrups. If you're not feeling coffee they've got some yummy smoothies (mango, strawberry) and iced tea selections as well. There's something out here for everyone. It's easier to find a seat here than other coffee shops but for a while (and they still might be doing this) they were implementing a two hour limit on wifi to keep things moving which put a damper on things. read more

Cool establishment that is bigger than it looks. I was only looking for a coffee but this place has far more than that. There is a great coffee selection, as well as a variety of food selections as well. I ended up getting an iced mocha, which was okay, nothing fancy. Customer service was good, and everyone was cordial, which is always great. So good that i didn't notice who the cashier was (see receipt pic). I have to admit, if that really was him, he was much nicer than I read about and he made a decent mocha. One of my friends introduced me to this gorgeously decorated coffee shop. There is plenty of outdoor seating and fairy lights all over. The interior is lovely, spacious, and elegant with pretty flowers, chandeliers, artwork, and seating spaced throughout the place. The intense scent of coffee permeated the whole place, really adding to the ambiance. The place also has a full food menu, as well as plenty of beverages and tempting looking desserts and pastries. The lady behind the counter asked all of us in line to remain socially distant from one another, which I understand completely. However, that would have been much easier to maintain if there were stickers spaced 6 feet apart (which overall, I didn't see that much of in Virginia). I decided to order an iced Caramel Mocha, which was pretty tasty. I loved the strong mocha flavor. However, I didn't really taste a whole lot of caramel. For my dessert, I chose the Millionaire Bar, which is kind of like a Twix bar, complete with shortbread cookie, soft caramel in the center, and hard chocolate on top. It was absolutely delectable! And better than a Twix. The shortbread cookie was delightfully crumbly, rich and buttery, while the caramel had a nice toffee taste, and the chocolate was incredibly intense in the best possible way. Before leaving, I bought the Date Bar to go, which was sort of like a granola bar with crumbles on top. The date filling was delicious, slightly sticky, and overall, the bar was satisfyingly chewy. I would definitely return, as it is truly a beautiful place to spend time in. I would be open to trying one of the entrées. And the lemon bar and carrot cake both looked appetizing. read more

My friend and I popped in here for a little afternoon pick me up, and I've never ordered a latte from here before. I got a latte sweetened with honey, and my friend got a caramel latte. Both were great (highly recommend sweetening it with honey. The service was great, and it was pretty packed (according the covid standards), and the people taking orders & making drinks was pretty quick. I wanted to stay and hang out for a bit and get my latte in a nice, big mug. I've sometimes pop in to get my coffee beans (whole and have them ground up there), because they're one of the few places who roast their own beans. Have visited numerous times over the years. The staff is outstanding, usually attentive & pleasant. Ordered a pot of peppermint tea & a large coffee. The server delivered the coffee in a "to go" cup as apposed to a ceramic mug as we were partaking there, not a big deal. (They weren't that busy.) The tea was ready within a few minutes & was delicious. The 3 Star rating was the condition of the interior, to say the least the cafe was filthy. The heavily stained/torn seat cushions to the dirt/grim on the window sills and dirty old cobb webs on the light fixtures; it was truly gross. Please take some time to do a thorough deep clean. I realize the vibe is shabby chic, but please consider replacing the torn/heavily stained cushions with clean replacements. We always enjoy Cafe Stella when in town, it's a regular stop for us. read more

I have been to this cafe a few times and never had any issues until today on December 10 around 7pm. I came here alone at first and was waiting for friends to come and join me. When my friends arrived and sat at the table for less than 10 minutes, one of the owners decided to approach us and ask us about ordering food and drinks. We were going to order but she decided to assume that we weren't. She had a very rude and condescending tone. We This was completely uncalled for as there was another big group who was there and she didn't approach them at all. I really did love the ambience, big menu, and closes later than most cafes. My experience at Stella was very disappointing and such a let down. I often frequent Stella to study and get work done, but her demeanor and attitude was a complete turn off. The Filipina owner of this establishment was very condescending and rude, telling my friends and I "Can I take your order? These tables are for customers only.". When we had just entered Stella and were trying to situate ourselves, two of my friends even going up to the counter to look at the menu. Not even 5 minutes within our visit she came up confronted us, assuming we were not customers or going to buy anything. It was such a shame as I was telling my friends of this amazing Filipino owned local cafe, with a warm tone and a lovely ambience. I've been a regular customer since 2017 and loved the place food, drinks and ambiance. However I will never come back after the horrible customer service I experienced. Me and my friends needed a place open late to study for finals. I happily suggested Cafe Stella as I loved this place and thought they would enjoy it too. Furthermore I knew this was a Filipino-owned business through an article I read a while ago and wanted to bring in more customers to support this small business as I am a Filipino myself. However, we were faced with a rude welcoming from the owner herself. Me and my friends were setting our stuff down because it was busy and wanted to get situated before getting food and drinks. Two of my friends went to the bathroom and took a glance at the menu and sat back down with us. We talked about how big the menu was excited to try. Not even 5 minutes into sitting down the owner came up to us and rudely asked "can I get you anything." We were confused because we knew we had to go up to the counter to get food. All of us sat in shock for a few seconds before she said in a condescending voice "seating is for customers only" She assumed we were not getting food despite only being there for 5 minutes my friends looking at the menu. We felt singled out as she just assumed that we were not going to buy anything. Furthermore we felt like we were belittled. No sh*t that seating is only for customers. We are adults fully capable of understanding that. After looking through other reviews I quickly realized that this was not uncommon. I am very disappointed in this small business and will never come back here or recommend this cafe to anyone ever again. Whenever I am in the area on the way to somewhere else, I always end up stopping here. I love the funky decor. It's a relaxed and cool atmosphere. My favorite menu items are the ultimate grilled cheese (takes me back to childhood) and the cafe burger. If I am doing breakfast (which they serve all day) I usually have the breakfast sammie and/or the French toast. A cafe au lait usually rounds out my meals. Service is usually on point, and I do not have any complaints during my many visits here. If I'm with friends we relax, have great convo and enjoy the atmosphere of Cafe Stella. We popped in twice this week to Cafe Stella. Thus first trip in was for dessert. I got the coconut macaroon dipped in chocolate and a strawberry fruit slush. The macaroon was delightful and the fruit slush was good, but a little icey. We got breakfast on the second trip. I ordered the stone ground cheddar grits the had andouille sausage. The grits were a little runny and there could have been more sausage or a thicker cut like Conecah sausage. The service is great and the place was packed both times. This place used to be my regular stop before the expansion. I've moved but visit as often as I can when I work nearby. Expansion is great allowing more indoor seating. The mood fits Ghent perfectly. Coffee is delicious and their lemon bars aren't bad. I've debated giving 5 stars however the baristas aren't the friendliest. I've gone about four times before writing this review to see if it changes but each time I've had the same barista and she's always seems upset/annoyed each time. I tip well and I have the easiest order (hazelnut latte) so not sure what would cause it. It was that way for the other patrons as well. There's just too many cafes that offer friendlier customer service for me to offer all 5 stars but if you're not stressed about the service then you'll love it! read more

There I am just enjoying my coffee and a grilled cheese and in walks a handsome man who chooses the seat nearby. Conversation sparked and numbers were exchanged. It's that kind of place. Maybe not every time, but you can definitely expect the unexpected at Cafe Stella. I've also had some awesome creative meetings in this space. The vibe of the place encourages you to let your guard down and just relax. It is one of my favorite rainy day spots with free wifi. (They do limit wifi use to two hours on the weekends which is great for keeping the crowd moving.) I've only been here for coffee and the only food I have tried is their grilled cheese. They offer so much more than that though- including beer and wine! The staff is always laid back and friendly and the coffee is strong. There are items everywhere which makes for a perfect mental distraction if you need a quick break from working or studying. Also, makes for a great conversation starter if you are still getting to know the person you are with. The prices are extremely reasonable and dare I say it even on the lower end compared to similar local coffee shops. This spot always has a decent amount of patrons, but I've never struggled to find a place to sit. As far as the actual coffee goes, it isn't my favorite, but I always enjoy it and the vibe makes it even better. read more

My parents have lived around the corner from Cafe Stella for a year but Covid stopped us from venturing in. We were pleasantly surprised to find this gem! That being said, our first stop in did not disappoint. The inside is much more spacious than I imagined. The style is farmhouse chic and the menu was FULL of items we can't wait to try! We got two ice coffees and walnut cinnamon coffee cake! The coffee cake was delicious, flavorful and fresh. The coffee was great (I've had their coffee before so knew it would be spectacular). We're looking forward to coming back for an actual meal and maybe a glass of wine (ohhhh yes! I love stella's and have been several times. However, I didn't realize we couldn't bring outside drink into the property. A kind male worker explained this to me as I still gave them my business but the female worker didn't take the time to explain and instead, rushed my friend and I out while closing the door behind her as I attempted to ask a question. I would have appreciated an understanding response instead of being shut down. My friend went in to order her food and also overheard the same female worker talking down on us for having a misunderstanding that she wasn't willing to address. Disappointed to say the least. My breakfast sandwich was yummy but my friends avocado toast was disappointing. This coffee shop has a lot of soul to it! It's warm and comfortable with a lot of options whether it be for breakfast, lunch, or coffee/drinks. They serve beer and wine as well. I enjoy their large selection of syrups and variety of seating, indoor and outdoor. The food I've tried so far (avocado toast, waffle sandwich, grilled cheese) is good but not spectacular. Not worth going there for specifically in my opinion, but it makes for a great option when you're going to the shop to get some work done but you're wanting more than just coffee. I think it's awesome how they're a late night hang spot. They even offer live jazz on Thursday nights. I find this location to be superior to their other location on Granby St. It feels more welcoming and is definitely more spacious. I haven't had a problem finding seating here yet, although at times it's been pretty close/crowded. They do do a good job of keeping in accordance with local COVID mandates; I've seen staff come around asking people to wear their masks when they aren't actively eating or drinking. This place is in my regular coffee shop rotation, especially when I want to grab a bite to eat, but it's not my favorite in the area. read more

Cafe Stella is a rare gem in this Covid world! I've really enjoyed coming here before with the quintessential cafe feel - you know, the acoustic music, comfy tables and chairs, eclectic decoration and hipster baristas. Not to forget the yummy coffee (amaaaazing smell) and delicious food! But since the start of the pandemic, Stella has expanded to have a beautiful patio with heaters (I once sat here when it was just a couple of mismatched chairs and melted in early summer heat and even endured strong Norfolk winds!) and a BIG seating area inside, with each table at least or more than 6ft apart. I came two days ago and masks were not required, but I would assume with the rising cases, masks will be mandatory when not eating or drinking now. This cafe is such a staple of Colley St and if you love cafes and still want to stay safe, I highly recommend that you check Stella out. read more

A friend took me here because his family personally knows the owners and it's his favorite cafe spot in VA! Though it's a bit of a drive from where I live I can say it was definitely worth the drive and I will be going again for sure! Such a cute and eclectic little spot, there were a good amount of tables that had people studying at and there were some couches where a larger group was hanging out at so the atmosphere was very welcoming! The barista was super nice and was able to help me pick out what exactly I wanted to get since their menu is so extensive- almost intimidating haha.
