Driving through Montana from here to there and stopped for the night in Bozeman - and what says Montana more than New Orleans, so we tried it. It was not just good "for Montana" - it was great - for anywhere. I've spent a lot of time in New Orleans, and the few things I tasted here would have been right at home there. Enjoyed the "Tchopitoulas Catfish" (grilled catfish over shrimp ettouffe) and the Cajun Lobster Roll. Loved the casual environment and cool decor - a large menu promises something for everyone, and plenty to keep you coming back if you live in the area. I was excited to give this place a try today. Went for a later lunch and loved it! I got the fried Bayou Po' Boy and a side of fried pickles. The Bayou Po' Boy had both shrimp and crawfish, lettuce, tomatoes, and some special sauce that was amazing. One thing I will say is that the food was pretty heavy/filling and I could have split a Po' Boy and been perfectly full--especially if you get a side. The prices were moderate--$11.95 for the sandwhich and $4.95 for the fried pickles. The had a large selection on their menus and many things I want to go back to try! The service was great. The atmosphere takes you to Louisiana. The one thing that was disappointing was their lack of freshly brewed sweet tea. They have a Peak Tea machine, but I personally prefer freshly brewed and associate that with Southern food. Overall I highly recommend. read more

I finally went back again, and was even let down more than before. I ordered a catfish po boy and a soda, $13.20 total (order at the counter). Got my change and a nasty look from girl when a did not leave a tip. As a rule I generally leave a tip after exemplary service is provided, not before. Cup for soda stunk like a dirty sponge. And the sandwich, although tasty, was dreadfully light on catfish. Maybe a 3oz portion. The first two bites of the sandwich were good, the rest was nothing but iceberg, bread and aioli. Louisiana is a pretty long way off for us Montanans up north. Truthfully, until recent years, we haven't had a huge selection of cuisine to chose from. When I was a wee lass, there was one Chinese restaurant (THE GREAT WALL) and the choice between Taco Johns or Taco Time, (so sad by the way, that there is no Taco Time in Los Angeles. It is way better than Del Taco, I don't care what you say!!!) I digress. Anyway, a few years ago, some entrepreneurial soul opened Cafe Zydeco. A world of aromas and tastes opened in our little college town of Chicory, Craw-fish and Biegnets. Yes, that combo does work. I personally love Chicory (BAM!) and a spicy craw-fish omelette. Of course I never met a Biegnet I didn't like. Puffy, crunchy outside, soft inside, powdered sugar delicious. Cafe Du Monde may remain in my dreams (oh 2am combo I love you), but at least when I come home to visit the family I can pretend I am on a New Orleans, Lou-ee-see-annah escape for an hour or too.... read more

Best takeout in Bozeman, and maybe anywhere!! The food is amazing, and they're happy to make substitutions when asked. They have spicy and non-spicy options (though all wonderfully flavorful). Best po' boy. Ever. Went here at the suggestion of two locals and were SO glad we did. Incredibly tasty food, really large portions (each of us took home half of our sandwiches), and a great value. I had the chipotle pork po' boy, and it was scrumptious! More meat than you can shake a stick at (and no, that's not a euphemism). I grew up not far from New Orleans and have been there many a time. So I feel like I have the qualifications to speak on authentic Cajun cuisine. Cafe Zydeco is about as good as it gets, being so far away from Louisiana and the deep South. The food is authentic, with just enough twists on it to make it Bozeman's own. I can attest to the tastiness of the seafood gumbo and shrimp po-boy! Worth every penny. Which reminds me, I need to book my next trip to Bozeman and get my Cajun on! read more

The food is very solid. I got a small seafood gumbo and I would definitely recommend it. All of the seafood tasted fresh and flavorful, although the gumbo flavors were not super vibrant or refined. But I'm no Cajun food critic so maybe I'm looking for something a little too dainty. My sister got the jambalaya - that had some kick, definitely some good flavor there. Dining is casual, you order at the counter. The vibe inside is pretty much what you expect when you're gonna shovel some gumbo into your gut in Montana. No beer at the bar just wine wtf? My cousins suggested we go here for breakfast on our way out of town, and boy, am I glad they did! We all had the Big Mamou; well, I mean, we each had one. Who wants to share when they're so good? Actually, I could only finish half of mine and polished it off after we got home the next day. I'd never had a biegnet before; we each got one of those, too! They reminded me of the malasadas I grew up with back home in Hawai'i. My cousins showed me the trick to eating them without getting powdered sugar all over the front of my shirt, and that really helped. Though I think it happened anyway; I guess I don't have the technique down yet. This is the first Cajun place I've ever been to, and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We sat and talked at the table next to the pot bellied stove (it was snowing off and on) and I felt warm and cozy and grateful to be there with people I love. I have never had a bad experience at Cafe Zydeco. All of the food is delicious and has so many layers of flavor, truly wonderful southern flavors. This is a hidden gem in Bozeman, and I always recommend it to people visiting or people who are missing some southern comfort food or spice. When I heard there was a Cajun place in Bozeman, I was assuming I was going to get a touristy, second-rate style of Cajun. You know the kind. The French Quarter is full of them. Technically "Cajun," but bland. Lacking soul. Boy, was I wrong. Cafe Zydeco deserves every bit of its five star rating. I travel to New Orleans nearly every year with a goal of stuffing my gullet with as much of its amazing gumbo and po-boys as possible, so I am very familiar with what makes great Cajun food. A trip to Cafe Zydeco was just like visiting my hallowed food Mecca. The seafood gumbo was actually better than some of the gumbo I've tried in New Orleans. It was eerily similar to my gold standard of gumbo, which is Liuzza's at the Track, by Fair Grounds Racecourse. The gumbo is not only filled to the brim with all the critters you could want, but the soup isn't too gravy-like, and it's SPICY just the way I prefer it. When I saw it came with slices of garlic bread, I almost cried. I always order garlic bread with my gumbo at Liuzza's. It was like being at my home away from home. I ordered a large bowl to share with my husband, and it was way too much, as we also each ordered a po-boy. A small bowl is basically a regular bowl for a normal person. Now to the po-boys. I'd never tried a barbecue shrimp po-boy before, but it sounded too good to pass up. I made the right choice. WOW. Sweeter than it is spicy, I was practically knocked on the floor. The French bread was perfect with a little crunch, too. My husband had the fried oyster po-boy, and he was astounded. He normally gets the same kind of po-boy in Nawlins, and he said this one rivaled some he'd tried there. In short, you're crazy if you pass by Cafe Zydeco. I'm only devastated this place is so far from Illinois. If I can't have my New Orleans food in New Orleans, I need it closer to home! read more

On the menu, the seafood was listed as "grilled", but in reality it was more like previously cooked, frozen, thawed, and tossed in a mayo like sauce. It came with nothing on the side. Don't get me wrong, the quality of the food is still decent, it is the value and experience that are the real problem. Dark, uninviting, cold (nasty drafts in winter), dirty in appearance, there really isn't anything positive to say. In town for business and I was told if you like New Orleans kinda food or just want a great place for lunch you have to check this place out. You order at the counter, then they bring your food out to you. The place was busy but not packed so I was able to get a table. Maybe a 5 minute wait and my food arrived. I had a po' boy: one bayou shrimp. Great bread, shrimp were prepared perfect. My only knock is all the slathering of the mayo-based aioli, I would of given this review another star. We were passing through Bozeman and saw this place on Yelp and decided to try it out. So glad we did! My husband and I shared the Pulled pork and the Muffaletta sandwiches. Both were awesome! Full of flavor, and the bread is wonderful! My mother-in-law ordered the grilled veggie and chicken pita. That thing was heavy! Huge, and the sauce had a cajun spice to it. Very good, although I preferred the sandwiches. The best surprise was that KIDS EAT FREE!!! Mine ordered Grilled Cheese and PB&J. They were both on the same wonderful bread, and the grilled cheese was actually toasted with a garlic butter which my son loved. It was quite a wait for the sandwiches (lunch hour) but it was worth it. They had signs around that they are moving closer to campus, and the lady taking orders was really excited about that, saying that it's going to be much nicer. Not sure when they'll be moving. It's almost a good thing this place is not in my town--I think I'd go there way too much! read more

Mmm, jambalaya :) Just passing through town, so happy to find a cajun place. The menu is odd, you order at the register from a menu that stretches across the entry area and is a bit cluttered. I suppose if you sit down first, you could take your time reading the menus on the tables, then go order. Lots of selection, though, and then you can get your drinks from the bar area and get a table. The food is yummy with gigantic portions (great for leftovers). We also had the bourbon bread pudding, which was perfect. Only problem was that we tried several times to get a drink from the bar and though there was nobody else at the bar, the bartender completely ignored us and finally went into the back room, she didn't come back out until we were eating. We ended up with only water. Which was fine. read more

Well, as I sit and write this review, my guts are gurgling from my lunch at the Cafe today. I would call my intestines moderately upset right now. The 'rhea hasn't quite set in (though I'm hoping it's just a false alarm). Anyhoo - cute little place. You order at the counter, then they bring your food out to you. We sat out on the deck and enjoyed the sunshine. Each of us had a po' boy: one bayou (crawfish and shrimp), the other just shrimp. If not for the slathering of the mayo-based aioli, they would've been perfect. But now my tummy's paying for it. I'll ask 'em for the sauce on the side next time. This place is amazing, and I can't believe I haven't been here before. It's in an old house that I've passed by a hundred times and never thought twice about. The jambalaya was just the right amount of spicy and absolutely delicious. I got the large and it could feed a family of four. What is there to say about Cafe Zydeco? Completely unassuming from the exterior (and the interior for that matter) this little gem is surprisingly located just off of Main. You could easily pass this place up, since it is tucked away behind some trees, and isn't very clearly marked until you have driven far enough past it to have to turn around (which we did, and I am glad!) We have eaten here 5 times for breakfast over the last 2 months, and have enjoyed every trip. The food comes out relatively quickly, and who could say no to a basket full of fried pastries covered in powdered sugar!? Certainly not me! The beignets here are TO. DIE. FOR. Perfectly cooked to a golden flaky deliciousness on the outside, only to be met by an equally perfect and delicious warm and soft center. Top that off with a generous heaping pile of powdered sugar and I am set! Are you drooling yet? Because you should be. They also have other choices to tempt your palate here for breakfast, but I have stayed true to the first thing I ordered here, because it was just THAT good. A hearty portion of andouille sausage atop a warm bagel, slathered in a delicious aioli sauce with just the right amount of spice. Even when my stomach is so full it feels as though it may burst, I just can't stop eating until i have finished it. I love this place, Great food, good staff and interesting building. From the outside it looks like the kinda place they might cook Meth, but they cook far better things in there. I haven't had a po-boy here I didn't like but my favorite has to be the Creole Chicken Philly - so good and such a good variation of the original. I am not super psyched about paying $9 for a sandwich but it sure is good. If you are really hungry go with a large serving of the jambalaya, I can get three meals out of this and its great. On Sunday they have beignets (think doughnut, but better) and these are a great treat, even if you do look like you just finished snorting coke afterwards. I'm now disappointed with this place. Prices were raised, (which is OK if standards stay the same), but the last two times I've been there in the past few months, they've skimped on ingredients. I got the large jambalaya, $15, for take out and it had all of 3 shrimp in it. Taste was great, but skimping on the shrimp for that much $ just doesn't sit well with me. When I noticed it, I sent off an email to them via their website, but no response thus far. 7/3/18 update: management contacted me and offered a gift card and apology. Grew up loving this place. I member when it was in the gas station in four corners back in the day then obviously in the little weird location on main now in another location that shouldn't work but it does bc of amazing food. They just keep picking the cheap rent and making it work all based on bomb dishes. The breakfast wrap w all the veggies is the digs. Great aoli read more
