Best breakfast sandwich I've ever had! Super friendly atmosphere with fresh ingredients

I wanted to do something different today, so I decided to try Caffe Barista & Deli for a Cod Fish Basket. Ordering online was very easy and quick, but my only problem is it did not give an option to choose French Fries. The online order form only shows Onion Rings. I requested fries as a substitute for the rings, and (thankfully), they were able to accommodate. The atmosphere of the place was pretty laid back and relaxed, with quite a line of people...which is a very good sign. Thanks to a friendly staff person behind the counter, I picked up my food and was on my way in no time flat. The Food: My Cod Fish Basket was just okay. Don't get me wrong, you do get a very good portion for the money. However, it did not have much of a taste to it. No seasoning, no taste, just fried. I will give this place credit for the fact the fish had a great crunch on the outside, and flaky inside. I just wish it had flavor. The other thing, were the fries. I'm a stickler about my French Fries and have an extremely hard time eating them if they are burnt or too overdone. Unfortunately, my fries were overdone, overly salted in some parts, and not salted on others. I ate a few but could not finish the rest. Lastly, the Cole Slaw and Tarter Sauce were packed in the same box as the hot fish, which made them both too hot to be eaten. Personally, I feel I should have tried the Philly Cheesesteak, or something with more flavor to it. I might give this restaurant another shot, (because giving local support is a good thing!). Yet, all I can say about it is, it's just "okay". If I try something else from here that's better/more flavorful, then I will update my review. It has a deli counter in the back. This is what makes it not just another convenience store. It has a small menu, but there's some great items. It has a terrific hummus vegetable wrap. This is about $7 for a massive wrap. It comes with your choice of chips. The wrap is filled with fresh tasting vegetables. It's surprising coming from such a nondescript deli. The hummus tastes fresh too, not like it came from a tub. Check this out if you like independently owned delis. It gets its meats from Boar's Head. This is the kind of place I dream of when I think of a good deli. Fresh, in-house selection of meats, salads, soups and cookies. Whatever is not made in-house is Boars Head. There is a great variety of standard deli sandwiches to choose from, but the star is the listing of hot sandwich options. All are stellar, including the meatball sub, philly cheesesteak, rueben and hot ham & cheese. All of the soups are great as well. But that's not all. How have I not written a review for this place?! Caffe Barista is that pace with the huge blue tent overhang that says, "Fourth and Plum Lofts" on it. I always used to drive by here but never knew it was a deli. Finally I stumbled upon this place after getting a hair cut next door and boy am I glad I did. They literally have, or could make you, anything you are craving. Home made pizza? Check. Deli sandwiches? Check. Pancakes? Check. Just want some wine? They have a grocery where you can get beer, wine, milk eggs, chips, pop, candy. This place is an oasis in the middle of downtown! I went for the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich with chipotle seasoned chicken breast, spicy mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion, pepperjack cheese all on a soft pretzel bun. WOWZER! This isn't your ordinary sammie. The onions give it great texture against the soft pretzel bun and the mayo brings the heat. A perfect well-rounded sandwich and a staple of mine. The service here has always been quick and friendly, but if you're going for lunch prepare for a wait because this place is hoppin' and rightfully so. This place is delicious, fast and reasonably priced. Walking in and toward the counter, I felt like it's the type of place where people know what they're doing and most fast. When I placed my order, though, the woman was happy to give me her suggestion for the best wrap -- the tomato basil tortilla. "It has the most flavor," she promised. The veggie wrap was the only obvious vegetarian choice, so I ordered that sans the cheese. I decided after one bite that I'd be back. The ingredients were fresh, it had the perfect amount of hummus, and it was a filling size. The wrap was awesome. There are pre-made salads and bags of chips to choose from, too, and the coolers are stocked with water, juices, soda and even beer. There wasn't much seating available and the coolers needed restocking -- they were completely out of most Coke products -- but I was there during a busy lunch hour. Totally worth it. read more

I can only give a somewhat narrow review of Caffe Barista because I always order the same thing - the Grape Walnut Chicken Salad on toasted wheat with lettuce and tomato! Even when he daily special sounds really good - like grilled tilapia on rice, even though the Boar's Head meat and cheese selection is tempting, even though they offer pizza, I order the Grape Walnut Chicken Salad. Because it is delicious. The sandwiches come with a pickle spear and a small bag of chips. Pretty good for $5.75. And its the only time I get Funyuns! During the lunch hour there are quite a few people working at the deli counter so the line you see moves quickly. You can even pick up a loaf of bread or a 6-pack of local beer for later while you wait. There is a small dining area and a handful of tables on the sidewalk for dining. read more

I recently began my new job working at the Duke Energy Convention Center and I've heard from several co-workers that this place was pretty good. I decided to walk over on an afternoon I'd forgotten my lunch. I was in after what was probably their lunch rush because I had no wait. I'd already decided what I wanted but after getting in there and seeing all their amazing offerings I was torn. I finally settled on something basic for my first time: club sandwich with havarti on a pretzel bun. Either I was really hungry or this was the best sandwich I've ever had. It was so fresh and the meat was really good. I destroyed it. I noticed while waiting they have several yummy looking salads including buffalo chicken salad and chicken salad. They also have a daily hot food special. I have to add that all of the staff was super friendly. I would come here even if I wasn't at work it was that great! read more

Caffe Barista is a God send. I live right upstairs and it's seriously the best housing decision I've ever made. They have an amazing deli with phenomenal sandwiches (1 word: PRETZEL BUN). The grocery literally carries ANYTHING YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. Including but not limited to: food, snacks, drinks, good craft beer, awesome wine selection, cleaning supplies, band-aids, flour, sriracha, produce, and STAMPS (?!?). They make pizza, breakfast, smoothies....seriously they have everything. And the coffee is good too. Call 'em up early and they'll have your deli sandwich (with a pickle and bag of chips) made to order and ready for pick-up for only ~$5! You can't beat it! There's a few tables in the place for seating, but be prepared to walk back to your office with your delicious smelling sandwich. The food has been fine each time I've tried it. The beer and wine selection is solid too. The only gripe I have is with the staff, specifically the guy who makes he food. This is a deli. Delis across the nation operate on the premise that customers come in, tell the "chef" what they want and it is made. I asked for a chicken cutlet on a roll with cheese. He said if it wasn't on his menu, he didn't have it. He told me that he has worked in the industry for 14 years and never even heard of a chicken cutlet. He then went on a rant for 10 minutes yelling in my direction about how rude it is to ask him to make a sandwich. The guy is an asshat and a certified lunatic. I love the spinach veggie wrap in this place. So much that I haven't tried out anything else... The wrap is a perfect combination of different veggies without too much of one thing and the spinach wrap itself is just mmmmmm!! The Cafe barista & deli is very close to where I work so a good place to go when I quickly want to grab a bit but still have a bit of fresh air during my lunch break. It's usually very busy around noon but the service is quick and usually you can find a spot to sit too, although it may not be a table but a spot at the bar looking outside the window. You get a free bag of chips with anything you order and they have a large choice of ice teas. It's cheap (4 and a bit for my veggie wrap), quick and delicious, what else do you want? Perhaps a bit more choices of healthy food like the veggie wrap? Most of the store does seem to be chips, soft drinks etc. read more

I'll be honest, Caffe Barista gets 1/3 of a star just for being a block from my office (hey, YOU try walking a mile in heels for a sandwich!). I'll be honest, I was a little intimidated the first time I approached the Deli because I always saw tons of people in there and I happen to be an indecisive person when it comes to food so busy people trying to get back to work don't typically like being behind me in line. I finally was encouraged by my coworkers to walk around the corner and get something to eat as my stomach had been growling for nearly an hour and the sound was now audible from 4 cubes over. They told me that even if it was packed the Deli was very fast, very cost efficient and VERY well worth it. Wallet in hand I walked up the block repeating in my head "I'll just keep it simple and get a BLT". Well, it was my lucky day, there were only a handful of people in line so I had a chance to scout the menu without feeling too pressured. Immediately I saw what I wanted. I believe it was called the Cajun Turkey & Ranch sandwich which consisted of a Colby cheese (spicy), Boars Head Cajun Turkey, and most importantly BACON. If I haven't already mentioned Caffe Barista & Deli is a BOARS HEAD deli which means everything automatically tastes delicious...seriously, that's what it means. My sandwich was around $6 and each one comes with your choice of chips and they surprisingly have about 8 options. There is a mini grocery store in the Barista if you need toothpaste or something, you can buy a salad to go, bagels for breakfast, and even beer (not for breakfast). This place really and truly is amazing. Sometimes when you walk into a place and they have premade salads they look like something you left on the floor of your car for a week but these salads have crisp lettuce and totally fresh ingredients. I am truly impressed with Caffe Barista and have now visited 5 times this month. The only reason I cannot give this place 5 stars is because of the way it is setup. Maybe they tried to Feng Shui the place, maybe they got the idea on HGTV, but the flow of the deli is TERRIBLE. There is clearly a lack of space for patrons as the rack containing the 8 chips sits in front of the deli and takes up a lot of foot space. You order your food and then you have the luxury of awkwardly shifting around people ordering and receiving their orders. Frankly I had no idea where to stand so I ended up squished into the corner pretending to look at my cell phone as I so obviously continued to block other people. I know I took away a star for the functionality of the space but honestly it isn't THAT awful it just depends on how busy it is. Maybe someone else can figure out where you're supposed to go and let me know? This place is fantastic for all of the 9-5ers in downtown Cincinnati. Great breakfast, great lunch, and a really friendly staff! In addition, going here makes me wish I lived in the downtown area just so I can do my grab-and-go shopping here! Whoever stocks the shelves here does a great job of knowing what to buy! (You can even buy fresh produce here). I typically frequent the deli in the morning for a breakfast sandwich and coffee. Every time I come in, the staff greets me enthusiastically and always asks me to come back for lunch. Caffe Barista & Deli averages about a dollar cheaper on most sandwich items than their Elm Street Deli competitor. In addition, their breakfast sandwiches are much less greasy and really have a lot more flavor than their competitor, just a block away. The staff makes a genuine effort to get to know their clientele and to develop regulars. I'm told that taco day at Caffe Barista & Deli is the best. But as many others have warned, COME EARLY to avoid the long waits for this downtown Cincinnati gem. read more

Downtown's business district has a great assortment of dining during the day, most open really early and close around 3pm. Caffe Barista stays open until 7pm, after most of the business crowd has left. This is one of a handful of grocery options for residents of downtown. The deli makes great sandwiches, offers quiche, pasta salad and deserts and you can find a token assortment of necessitates like laundry detergent, bottles of decent wine, deodorant and tampons at an inflated price if a trip across the river to the Bellevue, Kroger isn't possible. The soups are pretty good but the daily lunch specials are mostly greasy comfort foods. If you want something from the deli counter and don't want to wait in line for half your lunch break it's a good idea to show up before 11:30am or after 1:30pm. Caffe Barista carried Boars Head meats and has a pretty impressive selection of cheeses as well. If you're in a hurry they usually have prepared salads, frozen items and a decent selection of snacks. Limited seating is available inside and outside but I usually ordered my food and headed back to work, the people watching isn't that spectacular. read more

I've been a regular here for 2 years since I work at the Textile building down the street. It's a great corner store offering everything from breakfast sandwiches to a roast turkey lunch. I am a huge fan of the deli sandwiches they have to offer (I'm a sucker for the Italian). Sometimes the service is a bit of a miss but overall I appreciate all the workers do and how they do it.
