When you search up this "restaurant" on google a video pops up of some weird woman talking about how the food has layers but in my honest and well thought opinion the chef clearly attempted to give this dish "depth" through layering, however no amount of structural stacking can distract from the fact that it looks like a culinary recreation of SpongeBob's Goo Lagoon. The main component possesses a thick, viscous sheen reminiscent of industrial molasses, creating an oily, marbled abyss that feels more like a geological sample than a meal. The way the melted cheese streaks across the dark, heavy sludge only reinforces the "primordial ooze" aesthetic, making the plate look less like a dinner and more like something dredged from the murky depths of a cartoon swamp. I had my old standby, which I missed so much: a Chicharron Burrito with red chile. I still think the red chile here is about the best in town. Perfect heat, great flavor, I usually go for Christmas but not here, the red is the best! My wife had the Tuesday Flight of Taco, which is an amazing deal for only $11.99. Six, yes, six chicken tacos, two more than she could eat, so two left over for dinner. Super yummy. Two huge Sopapillas, which are perfectly fried. More yum! Great service from Jesus. Nice, family run place with exceptional food. Service was friendly and attentive, and my partner got to practice his Spanish. We ordered a variety of items: the green chile cheeseburger on a sopaipilla, a side of posole (Christmas), a pork tamal, chicken enchilada, and chile relleno, and the green chile pork stew. The star of the table was the one thing I didn't get a picture of: the green chile stew! Meltingly tender pork and potatoes were delicious and the chile flavor was yummy. My next favorite was the tamal, which had quite a bit of meat in it. I preferred it with the green chile, but my partner preferred the red chile. The posole was probably my third favorite, with fluffy hominy and great texture. Really, there wasn't a bad plate or bowl on the table. I can't say enough amazing things about Cafe Castro! Came to NM on vacation and this was our first meal - Boy, this set the bar high! We got some local beers, chile relleno, enchilada plate, side taco and complimentary sopapillos (I believe that's the correct name, ha!) Hands down the BEST Chile relleno I've ever had. WOW. I had the Flight of Tacos, which were pretty darn good. After a long day on the road they really hit the spot like my old man used to say. The inside isn't much to look at, but it's got great reviews for a reason. The food is good, but not overpriced. More importantly it's a place you don't have to dress up to go to, which in Santa Fe can be more difficult than you would think unless you just want fast food or Outback. So sort of a happy medium between The Paloma and Filiberto's. The sopapillas didn't have much flavor unfortunately, and you don't get free chips and salsa when you order. Not even a single basket. Back in the day, we stopped at Café Casto, while on a weekend trip to Santa Fe, during a larger trip visiting family in ABQ- we were recommended this eatery- as a must-try the famous Santa Few blue corn enchiladas- I will say, Santa Fe & ABQ have very different styles of Mexican food, not just plating styles (stacked versus rolled enchiladas) but in quality of red sauces, beans, & sopapillas (sorry Santa Fe, I just like ABQ's style more)- with that being said, while the meal was delicious, it was not quite as delicious as ABQ counter parts- The plates were massive, at reasonable prices, stuffed with ingredients, smothered in sauce- but lacked the pop of flavor & zest I was familiar with- it did have a very homemade, with love, quality- but the sopapillas were too light & greasy- I smothered them in sauce to taste better. Found this place through Yelp. It's family/local owned which really caught my attention. When I have a stay over in Santa Fe, I always have to treat myself to authentic NM cuisine. I caught them right before they closed, but they were still very welcoming. I decided to take out, since I wanted to just relax in my hotel room. The guy that assisted me recommended the flautas. They were excellent. Their red sauce and green sauce equally good. True to NM tradition (one of my faves) I also received a complimentary sopapilla, which was delicious! Traveling through Santa Fe, staying one night. Checked Yelp for restaurants nearby the Coyote South hotel and Cafe Castro's name came up. Looked like good, family fare. We ordered online a Combo Plate and a Carne Adovada, a few extra tortillas, chips and Queso and 2 flan. I wish I had taken pictures before eating but we hadn't had lunch so we're extra hungry. We were not disappointed. The beef taco was crisp and had the right amount of spice in the beef filling. The cheese enchilada was perfect with the green chili sauce. Rice and beans were tasty. Queso wasn't what I was expecting but it was pretty tasty too. The Carnes Adovado was spicy hot but in a slow burn kind of way. Very delicious and satisfying. I haven't had posole in forever so it was a tasty reminder of how nice it can be. We haven't made it to the flan yet. I'll update when we get to dessert. read more

There were a lot of servers and between the 3 that stopped at our table drinks and orders were taken quickly. Chips are ordered, not automatically delivered. We got the trio that included their salsa a little hot but not overwhelming, queso with green chiles - kick at the end & guac. Not too bad for a starter. Our entrees were El Plato Grande - includes a tamale, chile rellano, enchilada and menudo in place of the pasole the Carne Adovada plate, both were delicious. The rellano wasn't overly greasy, the tamale was loaded with meat and not wrapped in too much masa. This is a typical New Mexico eatery - a lot of food! If you leave here hungry it's your own fault. We were in town to visit family and we knew that one thing was going to be had that first day in Santa Fe, green Chili enchiladas. with a little bit of searching to see what was good on our side of town we decided on Castro. once there we walked in to a guy strumming solo a Mexican slow acoustic song. It really gave an ambiance as we took our seat at a table on the afar side of the 1st dining area. We ordered our food quick as we were both hungry. I knew exactly what I wanted. Enchiladas smothered in green sauce, and Sopapillas. Funny thing is, I was being frugal and just got the enchiladas. But later after we ordered, they brought out sopapillas as they were complimentary. Win Win! The Enchiladas were the best I had in years. Scrumptious, delicious and highly serendipitous. I was meant to be there eating those enchiladas. The fluffy, flaky and buttery sopapillas were just bonus. We were very happy with the food, and quite content with the music act. We found this place on google as we were driving into Santa Fe for the holiday weekend. The atmosphere was quaint and casual but not a lot of seating. The New Mexican cuisine and menu options were so delicious. I had the tamale plate that is one of the best I have ordered. They even had a kids Mac snd cheese for my picky daughter.
