I ordered the green chile stuffed sopaipilla, my husband had the ground beef chalupas, and my son had the steak and eggs -- everything was delicious. The complimentary chips and salsa were a great start, but the real highlight of the meal was the fresh, warm sopaipillas served with honey. They were easily some of the best sopaipillas we have ever had! The staff was friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. This spot was within walking distance from my room, so I decided to give it a try. It's located in an older strip center, but don't let that discourage you. The place was clean, the service was great, and the food was good. The enchilada was a little different from what I'm used to. It was served flat with a good amount of ground beef. I would've liked a little more sauce on it, but overall it had good flavor. The beans were good, and the potatoes and bacon were a nice addition to the plate. Ok. I do not know where some of these other reviewers were eating, but it can't have been here. The food was basically inedible. Nothing was fresh. We got guacamole to go with the chips and salsa. It was as close to Jimmy John's avocado paste in a tube with some peppers added to it as one could get. Definitely came from a bag. My son and I both got the stuffed sopapillas with chiles on the side. I got the ground beef. The beef was completely dry. It had some flavor and was better with the red chile on it, but still not good. They were topped with shredded cheese that looked like it had been microwaved. My daughter got the saddest nachos you've ever seen, sitting in a plate of grease. Let's discuss the refried beans. It looked like they took a can of beans, strained it dry, microwaved them with some cheese on top, and served. Absolutely gross. And don't be fooled by the margaritas. It's some weird wine as opposed to tequila. The restaurant is dirty. It's in a shady shopping center. I actually thought we had come to the wrong place. We were in an Uber, otherwise I would have left after seeing the place and tasting the guac. God forbid you go in the bathroom. I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. Avoid at all costs. El Comal is outside of downtown Santa Fe and is an old school Mexican restaurant. We noticed what looked like locals only and no tourists dining for breakfast. That's a great sign and why we went. My wife ordered the huevos ranchero with the green and red sauce and I ordered the migas with a side of bacon and green chili sauce. We both chose the fresh made to order sopasillas instead of the tortillas. The chili sauces have a great spice kick and flavor. The dinner menu lioked good too. Ordered the Triple Enchilada: beef, cheese and chicken with beans and rice, corn tortillas. The enchiladas were covered with a red flaming hot sauce, a distracting heat covering the good food underneath. Scrapped chili sauce off to the side and it was all good. We had huevos rancheros and the Santa Fe omelette and thoroughly enjoyed then both. Both red and green chili sauces were tasty. Such a horrible experience here. The food was mediocre, and that alone I was going to give 2-3 stars. BUT we had a party of 6 with separate bills, in which each bill was higher than the amount of food we ordered. When questioned, the server told us gratuity was already included for the "clean up". BUT the majority of our group already had paid and added extra gratuity since it was not marked on our bills. It wasn't until after the fact that we did the math and were very upset. I am so glad I listened to wise folks on the internets and came by this little mom and pop shop. Food? Stellar. Almost everything we got was perfection. Friend and I both go the Adovada combo. I loved the adovada chalupa so much I got an adovada burrito to go for breakfast tomorrow! The cheese enchilada w/Christmas sauces was so delicious, as was the rice and posole. The only thing I didn't love was the shredded beef taco. Beef was dry, tough, a little flavorless. Maybe because it was the bed of the night? While visiting Santa Fe I ate breakfast here every morning and never ate the same thing twice, except the sopapillas (we'll talk about that later). The food was always amazing and the portions generous. Their red chili was on point. Sopapillas were fluffy and crispy and edible either savory or sweet. With my breakfast and red chili, they were the perfect addition to eggs and bacon. After the meal with a little honey drizzled on top, it was the wrap to amazing food.
