The cafe is located across from the park and has nice views from any seat in the house. Very busy and hard to get the attention of the staff. I almost left after 20 minutes of waiting at our table. A little on the pricey side. I had the chicken caesar salad and the chicken was fried and really dry. I thought I was biting into a crouton but ended up being chicken. Was ASSAULTED by the Asian server. Hitting me with his serving tray and with his hands and pushing me multiple times. Ended up with bodily harm. I used to love coming to this cafe (for years) but all this because I was OUTSIDE drinking a glass of wine and on FaceTime with my family during sad times. They told me I couldn't speak on the phone (since when?) but in French (I didn't understand at first) and when he came back and yelled at me I told him I didn't understand. He threatened to throw my phone into the park (apparently the manager). He took my wine away when I asked what the difference was between talking to someone across from me and someone on the phone (mind you, I'm sad so I'm not loud). Things escalated when I asked for their names. I asked the Asian server and insisted he gave me his name so I could complain to the owner. (I was still on FaceTime with my family who spoke French) and wanted to take a screenshot of the man. He then grabbed my phone, pushed me around and hit me multiple times. He also grabbed a tray and hit me too. In disbelief I went outside and tried getting a better snap so I could report him, and (in the photo I attached) he rushed towards me (I'm outside) and hit me harder with the tray. It left a big bump on my forehead. A few people were walking by and were kind enough to consol me. I had my uncle who speaks French come, and the manager (who saw what his colleague did) of course diminished the situation. Claiming I was speaking loudly. (I was not) And that I just hit myself with my phone (obvious lie, he saw his colleague hit me and told him to stop because they'd get in trouble) also, I was the only black person. Which could have been a factor to his discrimination. Overall I used to love this place, but will NEVER come here again and am taking legal action! read more

Super nice wait staff. We ate very well. The food and service were excellent. I think the servers all did a great job and were accommodating to our requests. They worked well as a team and you could tell they had serving experience. The outside cafe ambiance was so good. We tried the steak au poivre and salade Victor, which came with a piece of fois gras and a bread basket. For dessert, we shared a chocolat liégeois. So decadent. read more

Wonderful, easy going dinner after a long day of traveling. We stumbled upon this restaurant after a day of exploring the city. The staff were very welcoming and made us feel comfortable speaking English, explaining dishes and ordering. I am happy to report we tried escargot for the first time during dinner here and they were great! I can't quite remember the pasta my fiancé ordered, I believe it had the word croquette, but it was delicious. Cafe Hugo ended up being a pleasant surprise! My sister and I had plans to get big salads at L'Ébouillanté for dinner, but our plans were quickly squashed by a thunder/rain storm that commenced halfway through our walk. Thankfully this all transpired while we were at Place des Vosges so A) we could stand undercover and B) we could retrace our steps 30 seconds back to Cafe Hugo. Which was looking more and more inviting as the thunder and rain progressed. All of the outdoor seating (covered, of course) was occupied, so we were sat indoors--which was open to outside at least, making for a cozy atmosphere. For drinks I tried to order a glass of rose and ended up with a glass of red... I didn't realize there was a red, white, and rose all with the same title and I had to specify my variety, whoops my fault! Thankfully I'm not picky when it comes to wine and it was red wine weather. I was ecstatic to see that they had a plant-based salad on the menu. (I can't remember if it came with cheese but it was easy to make plant-based if so.) the Detox Salad included greens, bulgar, avocado, radish, edamame, cucumber, tomato, pomegranate, and pesto, plus oil and vinegar on the side. Yum! Light and refreshing. The baguette served with was delicious as well. My sister ordered the same with fries on the side... a generous portion at that! Prices weren't bad. Service was pretty standard for Paris, no complaints really. Besides the cigarette smoke that wafted in a few times, but I suppose that's what you get for dining in Europe. Anyway, I would recommend stopping by for drinks and/or food if you're in the area. They are often open, unlike a lot of establishments (especially in August!). read more

As a fellow 'Hugo', I was excited to visit here on my week in Paris. It is a pleasant cafe and other comments here were surprised at the prices. I would like to note that this is Paris. This is a prime tourist location. I enjoyed my visit very much and even bought two 'Food & Fish' Cafe Hugo coffee mugs. Should I ever break both of them, I will book a flight to Paris to replace them. It is within easy walking distance to the free viewing of the permanent collection of Maison de Victor Hugo. Was in Paris for a week with my hubby and 2 little guys (ages 2 and 6) and often struggled to find a kid-friendly place for dinner that was also good for the adults (read: not McDonalds). Cafe Hugo was in our neighborhood and after seeing some reviews from fellow Yelpers we gave it a shot. As always, my Yelp peeps were right. Service is good with friendly wait staff who speak English well. The place is busy and loud enough that your kiddos can make their usual noise and not disturb anyone. Oh and let's not forget the food - it's excellent! We ordered steak which came perfectly cooked, as well as a shared bowl of French onion soup. For dessert, chocolate cake and crepes with Nutella. The chocolate cake isn't described as much more but it comes with a rich chocolatey sauce poured over the top, and it's so decadent. Whether you have kids in your party or not, I'd highly recommend Cafe Hugo if you're staying or hanging out in the Marais. read more

During my trip to Europe I spent three days in Paris, solo. I had my fair share of over-priced meals, but was pleasantly surprised to come about a place where it looked like the locals go to have good food. The meal I had was great, and decently priced, thus I had to write a review. Originally this review was placed under a US address in Paris, TX, but now that Yelp is in Paris I decided to repost! As I looked through the menu (at the same time I was thumbing through my restaurant translation guide) decoded the lamb chops for 12 euro. I decided to go for that, but thinking I'd get a fine french (small and tiny) portion, I went for my new favorite beer to act as a filler, 1665 beer made by Kronenburg. To my surprise the entree came out with three huge double cut (two-bone) lamb chops, potatoes au gratin, and a breaded roasted half tomato. The chops were seared perfectly and tasted like lamb heaven. For dessert I went for the crepes with Grand Mariner sauce and a glass of champagne. Then I added another glass. The total bill came out to be 32 euro which came out to be about $47 (exchange rate at the time). It was still pricey, but I did order A LOT. And compared to my other meals, I definitely had better bang for my buck... uh... euro at this place in terms of Quality and Quantity. It was also a real cool, trendy, upbeat yet relaxing place to enjoy a meal. I wish they had more places like this here. Next time I go back, I'm so there. read more

Never had such bad service as this morning. I waited for a long time for a waitress (young- and seemed to be very flustered) to arrive and take my order for a cafe creme. It took another 15-20 minutes before she returned and I could ask her to please remove the filled ashtray on my table. She did so, wiping up the ashes on the table as well. Later, after my husband arrived we tried to flag another waiter, as our waitress was nowhere to be seen, and he shook his head at me, giving me an angry look- while pointing around as though I should find our waitress and NOT bother him. Lovely - just had a great meal. Started with the prawn fritters - they were pretty good. I had the duck breast which was amazing - very generous and tasty. The other half had the steak and chips which he thought was a bit dry :-(. But a great vibe and I really enjoyed this place. Of note is how outstanding the service is. I found this place, which was recommended by several tour books and an acquaintance, to be one of the more lackluster places we went in Paris. It is packed because it's right on Place de Vosges. But every dish we ordered was of mediocre or poor quality, including the burger and cheese plate. Look elsewhere in the Marais for better cuisine. read more

This review is not for the food since I didn't even get to order anything in this place; it is for the attitude of one of the french waiters who is a blond young man. I found this place via Yelp and decided to have a couple of drinks and some appetizers with my husband during our vacation trip to Paris. We stopped at the cafe and one of the waiters asked us if we want to eat there. We said we don't want to eat, but we would like to have a couple of drinks. He showed us a table to sit. Right after that, another french waiter came by our table and asked what we wanted to eat. We explained again that we would like to get some drinks but we don't want dinner. The waiter was very rude and told us in a very harsh tone : "In France, if you get a table, you must eat!" and then he took all the forks and napkins away from us very aggressively and rudely. I should say that his was the first time I experienced such impolite behavior in a cafe from a french person! Except this experience, I find french people very polite and nice, but this waiter was definitely very rude! We did not even drink there and we left the place. Worst experience everrr!
