I have been discovering recently that the downtown SJC broader area has some nice hidden neighborhoods. Cahill Park is relatively large with a big grassy area which would benefit from some maintenance. A lot of dogs running around. Note that there is no shade especially as it starts heating up this time of the year. There is limited street parking. Was nice to see so many families out there enjoying the weather and open space. read more

I just moved to the area. I have a dog and 2 kids, so works perfect for me Checking out the neighborhood and I must say : Nice neighborhood area. Family oriented NiceCondos around. This is considered the nice area of San Jose. Great park to walk your dog and push the stroller. Whole Foods is down the street. I mean if you enjoy the walk go for it ! The people here that I have encountered are very friendly. I see couples walking around pushing their baby on the stroller. Walking their dogs. There is 1 basketball court so that's cool. A nice play area for kids. I like to walk around the grass area and My dog has lots of fun. Not a park for parties or bbq that's for sure . No restrooms around. I have seen some homeless just standing staring at people. Possibly high on some drug so be cautious of course!!! I have a dog so she is ready to attack and protect if need be . However if I didn't have a dog I wouldn't feel super safe just me walking with my baby in the stroller and my oldest. So far so good . My experience has been nice and I will continue to take my walks here. I hope to make friends with other dog owners and parents with small kids. Just try it out Once you might like it. Nice park, dog friendly, has a single basketball court and steel wedges on the cement seating areas to keep skate boarders from grinding there trucks on the corners. There's a great play area with at least 6 slides for children and 4 swings "2 for older kids and 2 for the smallest of children. There is also a really big field to fly kites, have a picnic or play with mans best friend C; The park is well kept and clean. read more

This park is simply fantastic. Sometimes you get the annoying people with even more annoying chihuahuas, who seem to think is okay to just let them bark and bark and bark, which it's NOT! YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!! But I digress; the area is really nice and most people are very friendly around here and more than willing to help you out in a time of need. I've been coming here since before they built the playground. Nice neighborhood, usually a lot of dogs, many off leash. Lots of big trees but only around the borders of the park and some around a cemented area that doesn't have any chairs, benches or tables So it gets really sunny and hot out here. There should be at least one more shade in the playground area, over the structure with the highest slide and some water fountains!!!! And a bathroom!! Then it would be a 5 star park. read more

I'm here pretty often, at least once a week. I love how large the grass area is. Lots of places for my dog to mark. People seem to be pretty responsible in picking up their dogs droppings. However, I'd still watch my step. The bad part about this place is I think it is an off leash hang out. I always see off leash dogs in groups. I have yet had an off leash dog wander over, but it is VERY annoying. I have yet to use the playground, but if I was a kid it looks pretty fun! Its all enclosed and no dogs allowed. The park can get a little sketchy since it is off of the light rail, but Ive never had any issues. There's lots of street parking. read more

Sorry guys, I'm the dog owner who says dogs should be on leash at ALL times! Regardless of your dogs prior behaviors. Why? First dogs are an animal, they are unpredictable. Two there are children playing who may be afraid of dogs and three- it's the law!! The play structure is great! Although I do wish it had water fountains. I do not want public restrooms it may cause more problems in the area. If your child has to use the restroom run home... That's what I do. If an accident happens so be it. After all they are young and learning and that happens. I hope to see either a fenced in area, a public pool, or more renovations with the open space. read more

THIS IS NOT A DOG PARK! Alright, I decided to do another update. Although I have grown to enjoy living here, I still insist that the dog leash is a HUGE issue. I agree completely with other reviewers & dog owners when they say "it's the law!" It also shouldn't matter what time of the day OR night it is. Your dog should be on a leash ALL THE TIME. Today, I witnessed an unleashed golden retriever run after a cat & get very close. The cat was fast enough to climb a tree & get away... But where was the dog owner? On his cellphone... Where was his dog leash? it was stylishly wrapped over his arm like a handbag. Parents with their children are beginning to come out & enjoy the park more & more, however, playing ball & Frisbee by an unleashed dog is not safe. I've witnessed it several times, and the dog owners are either frantically running after their dog, apologizing profusely, or idiotically smiling like this is okay... =/ again from my last review... if you aren't from the area, it's not worth an extra trip. There are nicer parks where you won't run the risk of getting a parking ticket, or your hand bitten off. OH and pick up your poop!!!! I haven't taken out the video cam yet, but I'm sort of tempted to, then I can start a fun "who doesn't pick up their dog poop"channel on youtube! All my photos to prove of the unleashed dogs have been removed by yelp after being flagged by other yelp users. I do not doubt that it was by the same law breakers in those photos. I'm sure they were ashamed to see their photos on here and I don't blame them for wanting them down. However, yelp did not give me a reply-able email to respond so my photos will be up on my flickr by the end of today under "cahill park". Cahill Park is not a dog park, yelp. Why do you have it categorized as such. It must have been those pesky law breaking dog owners again. As for focusing on our families, safety is my #1 concern not just for my family but ALL the children who play at the park and when your dogs are unleashed and run a muck all over the park to a point that you're screaming for your dog to come back that is not safe. LEASH YOUR DOGS AT ALL TIMES. I also want to point out that I give kudos to all the responsible dog owners who have their dogs on a leash and even go as far as to search for their dog poop in the early morning hours with only their mere cellphone as light. THOSE people are good neighbors and responsible dog owners. read more

I would have to completely disagree with the other reviewer. I live right on the park and love it! I use it almost every day. I have 2 dogs and they love it as well. Yes there are dogs off leashes but it usually is from around 5 - 7 and thats it. Also I would say 98% of the dog owners are very courteous to people that don't have dongs. Especially families with children. And almost everyone picks up after their dogs as well. The only negative thing about this park is sometimes the grass has drainage issues when it rains so some places can get a bit muddy. If you love being around friendly neighbors and friendly dogs this is an excellent choice for you. If you just prefer friendly neighbors I would come any other time accept from 5-7. And as a final note to the size and temper of the dogs there. I have a 10 lb. terrier mix and a 100 lb. Giant Schnauzer. They both have fun and I have never had problems with them playing with other dogs. It's pretty much the same group of folks who come out every evening and all the dogs are very well behaved. read more

First things first..the dog owners (leashed or not) are very curtious of other dog owners and people.. I too am a dog owner and ive never had any issues with other dogs..the people complaining and taking mysterious pictures of people in the park need to get a life and stop being so negative.. its a great park and theres always kids running around or a random game of basketball going on..and its a nice neighborhood read more

This is a nice little park tucked behind the San Jose train station. It's surrounded by upscale townhomes and luxury apartments. The Good: The park is clean, reasonably well maintained, and generally safe. Enjoy a game of catch or frisbee, walk your dog, or fly a kite. The Bad: The problems with the park are not dogs running off-leash, although this happens. But the owners are by-and-large respectful and responsible, and the bitter diatribe by shen b. above seems like a personal vendetta rather than a review. No, the problems with this park include new construction (September 2008) of public toilets. The park already draws its fair share of homeless, but public toilets will undoubtedly draw more. Additionally, kids play basketball on the public court at all hours of the night -- even 3am! There's talk in HOA meetings about setting a curfew, though I'm not sure how that would be enforced. Finally, a "kiddie" park has just been started (September 08) and is due to be completed in early 09, which will add a family-friendly focal point. Come on by, enjoy the park, and ... bring your dog! read more

We don't live in this neighborhood, but commute through it with our toddler. She knows all the dogs and their adults, and we have never had a problem. The playground is small and wood chips for flooring, but she loves it. Great place to hang out and wear out your friendly small kid or friendly dog. Maybe the city should just go ahead and throw a fence around half the grassy area (lengthwise would be best), and make it a safe off leash park for everyone. Its a defacto off leash park already. Considering the density in the neighborhood and lack of green space, its a sane solution. read more

Don't fly a kite here because the city never bothered to bury the power lines when building this large green space. Large grass field is great for soccer and football practice and pickup games, just ignore the dog poop! Parking is permit only! So plan on walking to get here. Lots of dog walkers. If you plan a community event you need city permits that penalize you by the number of shade tents, so bring sun screen. Also remember to bring a potty a potty or hike the 1/4 mile to the train station or whole foods! read more

There's a huge, open grassy field perfect for playing catch, throwing around footballs, frisbees, and other sports. Lots of people bring their dogs here- so much so that at first I thought it was a dog park. The doggie owners are for the most part very good about picking up after their pets. The park is kept very clean, so we lay out for picnics here sometimes too. There's a playground for kids, and a half basketball court. It is just feet away from the Diridon station. read more

This is a hard one to review; it's good and bad. First, there is a fabulous, new, enclosed play-structure. It is really nice, and absolutely worth a trip out of your way to check it out. There is both a smaller structure for younger kids and a bigger structure for older ones. Unlike usual, the big structure is designed to be almost impossible to get on it you aren't old enough to be on it. The big structure is really tall! The entire area is enclosed with a fence. There is shade over part of each structure and over some fo the benches. The benches are placed poorly for kid-watching but the fence makes it easy to maintain that your kids are safe. The benches are made of metal strips so you might want to bring a towel or blanket to use with them or you'll wind up sticking to them on a hot day. You can also bring a blanket for the ground and cuddle into the shade that trees provide along one side of the fence. I did find a few ants on me after sitting on the ground a while. However, there are no facilities. No bathroom. No drinking fountain. Last time we went, one of the other moms brought one of those portable plastic potties for kids. You would really need to hop in the car to get a a restroom quickly, which is quite inconvenient. Outside of the fenced area, there are big swaths of grass, but there were enough odd people milling around that I would be less comfortable with my kids running around here than elsewhere. Though the map shows this as being at the corner of Alameda and Bush, you actually need to turn south on Bush and drive at least a block to find it. There is ample street parking. So, overall, I'd say try this sometime if you want to explore a new play-structure but don't put this in your regular rotation because the lack of bathrooms makes this park only moderately good. read more

When I first moved in to the neighborhood I really did think that it was going to be a great place for the kids to play. Yeah I know they are building the playground and I really hope this helps, but it's true there is way too many dogs running around without the leash. I'm also a dog owner but when I want my dog to run around and play without a leash I take it a few blocks away and let it free in the DOG PARK.. I actually had to lecture a dog owner because there were kids playing and her dogs were barking and wanted to attack them. All she told me was that it was because they were playing with the skateboards. I'm sorry but this is a park were it is advertised that kids can play not a dog park. To the lady that said they only run around 5-7. Obviously you don't live right next to the park because they are there in the morning and evening you know the times kids like to play... Yes there is the responsible owners that walk them on leashes and pick up after there dogs but there is also a lot of irresponsible ones. The other thing is the homeless. There isn't a lot but there is some and it does suck because you know they are going to just treat the playground like there personal bedroom or toilet and that I don't look forward too. I personally am going to try and run them off so this don't happen when the park opens. To the dog owners please keep your dogs on a leash. It's not too much to ask... read more

Like many others here, the park (which is attached to where I live) would be a great park if not for all of the IRRESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS. If you want to take your dog to a REAL dog park, there's one on Park Ave, just a few blocks away. THERE you can let your dogs run off leash all you want!!! And sorry, but "My dog is friendly" doesn't cut it. I have a Shiba Inu who is always leashed, but who will eat your little yapper in a heartbeat. Then what happens? I get sued because YOU are too inconsiderate to follow the rules. So, I'm going to start following you people home and writing down where you live so I can report you to the HOA (assuming you actually live in the townhouses). And to Liz M.'s post, no one's saying there should be a task force here to ticket the dog owners, just that we would wish that these idiots would FOLLOW THE RULES. How about expecting some personal responsibility once in a while? For those folks that actually live in the townhomes, the monthly HOA newsletter reminds them about the leash laws every issue, so those folks have been warned on several occasions. read more

Just got a $60 parking ticket. The sign said that there was 2 hour parking. I parked for less than 2 hours, but the ticket was for not having a permit to park. Not a great experience for a neighborhood park. Won't recommend this as picnic or meet up place. Grass was soggy. read more

I get nervous sometimes because there are so many dogs off leash here and I only have an 8-month-old 15-pound puppy LOL. However, it's a big enough open space for your dog to run around and enjoy the company of other dogs too. We live down the street so we always walk! I think most of the people who come here are locals, which is awesome. read more

Nice little neighborhood park surrounded by condos and apartments near the Diridon station, off the alameda near the whole foods. Parking is mostly permit only for residents in the area. There is a separate kids play area, a half court for basketball and a good size grassy area. No restrooms or separate off leash areas for dogs. The neighborhood is very dog friendly so you will more than likely see people out with their dogs. Some may even be off leash which I haven't had any issues with. The children's play area is also quite busy in the evenings. Gets busier on weekends with everyone out enjoying the weather. Overall a very good park. read more
