I used to frequent this quaint café-bakery nestled in the Park Hill neighborhood and today, thought it was a good time to visit again. It hasn't changed much in terms of decor and yummy offerings in the pastry case but darn! I wish I had gotten here early because almost all my previous favorites were wiped out! My group chose the chocolate chip muffin and chocolate croissant and they weren't disappointed. Fluffy and fresh and not too sweet. I had myself a London fog with almond milk and it's just as good and hot as I remembered. I also snagged a cinnamon bread, and...well it was a bit dry with hardly any cinnamon. Kinda disappointing but hey, like I mentioned above, next time I will get here earlier, especially on a weekend, and see if I can't claim one of their yummy blueberry muffins! Be aware it's also really crowded on a Saturday morning, making it difficult to maneuver around the place. They have lovely sidewalk patio seating for the warm days coming our way soon. This is the second year my spouse ordered my birthday cake from Cake Crumbs and we're definitely done after this year. The buttercream cream frosting is greasy and heavy like they're using cold butter to make a frosting- definitely not fluffy and creamy. There is also way too much frosting- 1/8" between cake layers is overwhelming. The cake itself is dense but also dry. Finally the cake and the frosting never really come together when you're eating a bite. Definitely moving on next year. read more

Sorry to have to write this. Came in the store around 3:30 Friday. 2 young people working. I asked if the cake pops had tree nuts. They looked at each other and said "I don't think so" I explained I needed to know because of an allergy to tree nuts. There is a sign right on the back wall that says ask a manager if you have a question about allergens. No manager in the store. The 1 employee "said the owner is very busy with other stores and doesn't care about this store." My coffee drink.....fumbling with the espresso machine and not really knowing how to make the drink. Cute spot off a fun little street to walk around. Have a great patio and lots of seating inside, wouldn't have known but it is like a coffee shop and you could def plop down and work awhile. This is a poor excuse of a business. We ordered a cake for a surprise party - funfetti with strawberries. Once we got to the party and cut the cake it was red velvet with mixed berries. The opposite of what we ordered. We text with the owner back and forth who assured us we would get a full refund. The text below to prove it. Instead of handling it like he said he would, he told his GM, Brian, to handle it who was useless. He gave us the runaround that because it was just the cake flavor that was wrong he couldn't give us a full refund. And that "store policy" stated that because it was taken off the premises there was "nothing they could do" We spoke to the owner again who back tracked on his words of a full refund. I came here to order gender reveal cupcakes and was very clear that I did not want to know the gender myself. I wanted to be surprised. I even showed the employee my results and he filled out the order form. Unfortunately, while I was paying, he made a comment that strongly hinted at the gender ("Let's just say your son will be pushed aside soon"), which completely gave away the surprise. Sure enough, he was right, and what should have been an exciting, joyful reveal moment was spoiled. I'm really disappointed because all he needed to do was keep quiet. I trusted the bakery with a very special moment, and that trust was broken. I hope they can better train their staff on how to handle gender reveal orders so this doesn't happen to anyone else. read more

I traveled to Minneapolis to Denver to celebrate my daughter's birthday. I wanted to get a very special cake and I heard that cake crumbs was good. I ordered the cake by speaking in person to someone and we got a maple cake with maple flavored frosting. The cake was good, not exceptional, while eating it we found many egg shells in the cake not the frosting. 4 of the 5 people bit down on a shell while eating the cake. We didn't finish the rest of the greatest 42. I talked with the manager, I believe , and I told him that we would like a partial refund and he said that would be fine and he would get it to me via email because I live in Minneapolis. Well, as you can guess I never got an email and I never got a refund. I am coming to Denver again at Christmas to celebrate my husband and my 50th wedding anniversary. This has been our go to place to order holiday pies in the past but unfortunately this year we were met with disappointment. In the past, the pies were equally beautiful and delicious and this year... I don't even know what we were given. I honestly was in shock when I picked the pie up. I do know they are under new management & have new bakers but the quality has dropped significantly. I cannot believe I paid $32 for the apple pie I received. As you can see from the pictures the presentation was poor and it really didn't taste good either. I've also popped in a few times for some grab and go over the past few weeks at various times and there are never any baked goods left. The counters are always empty and look picked over. I was there for a weekend breakfast, and they were busy but not overwhelmed. Kind staff found a way to calm it and finish their work without issues. My daughter has loved visiting Cake Crumbs on our walks around the neighborhood for more than two years and has eyes only for one thing: a cake pop. Since the cafe changed ownership earlier this year, I've noticed a distinct shift in the warmth of service and the way we feel welcomed there. The ostensible owner seems to always be running around as though there are people lined up out the door or that there's some kind of emergency, and "brusque" would be a generous description. But today I had to tell my 4-year-old we won't be returning, after he sternly told her "don't yell at me again" when she excitedly requested chocolate for her cake pop flavor. I don't anticipate he'll ever stop running around like the Titanic is sinking long enough to read this, but buddy: coming from someone who's spent a long time in the service industry, if you feel the need to snap at an excited kid, you're in the wrong business. You took over a cafe in a neighborhood filled with families. Your over-the-top warning sign on the door listing behavioral rules for school students was embarrassing (for you) at best, but snapping at a child is beyond the pale. If you can't handle the pressures of customer service, and I've seen no evidence that you can in all my visits, stay out of the service industry. read more

Stopped in to get a cupcake yesterday. Actually got 2 cupcake and two cookies. It was very shocked that the strawberry with yellow cake was very dry. Called this morning and they asked me what they wanted me to do. They did not offer replacement. It hasn't been there in a few years. The peanut butter cookies didn't have a lot of peanut butter flavor in them. Won't be going there again. lady there was I found a wonderful bakery called The Detour have to try that one. I was sooo happy to find this little gem in Park Hill It's the cutest little cafe and has an array of menu items. They had cupcakes, pastries, cakes, pies and breakfast items and full coffee bar. Cake Crumbs makes what might be my favorite cake in Denver (especially now that the Market is gone). I've gotten birthday cakes here a few times and been pleased each time. I ordered a custom 6" cake during quarantine for my husband: almond cake with vanilla buttercream frosting. I didn't get a message on it and just told them to decorate however they like. It was beautiful. More importantly, it was delicious and the birthday person loved it. I like my cake dense, and this was dense and moist and terrific. The frosting was buttery, not too sweet, and had none of the "shortening" taste of other bakeries' frosting. Since I was getting the cake delivered, I figured I'd make it worthwhile to them and ordered a quiche (another favorite) and a loaf of whole wheat bread. I've been coming here for years, and finally I feel the need to point out a few things to management...which I am guessing will never read this, because it appears they don't know or care much about how to run a coffee shop. Other reviews are all about the food--OK, but here are some points about hanging out in the space itself: --Inside, it's a dump. Tables are sometimes cleaned, and sometimes not. Our table had wobbly legs, which we fixed...but why didn't someone else notice this first? The red front doors are a greasy, paint-chipped mess--hardly a friendly welcome. No one has paid attention to furniture and general comfort for a long, long time. --Outside, it's a dump. The outside tables and chairs are never straightened up, and remained a mess all last winter. Can't someone at least neaten up outside? Would take five minutes. The doormats are a threadbare mess--replace these. No one has ever power-washed the pavement and storefront where we sit. Are you thinking these are trivial issues? If you think that, then you are not a cafe manager. I have been one, and I can tell you that there are NO trivial issues--if a customer notices, it's an issue. --A terrible problem inside: the noise. The kitchen is in a walled-off space right next to the main room, and every bit of yelling, banging, machine noise, joke-telling, loud staff talking and laughing, dishwashing, and general mayhem is hearable by every customer in the shop. I can't begin to tell you how obnoxious this is. It'll take some money, but you need to redesign the interior so that the poor customers are not auxiliary participants in the loud kitchen activities. The location is perfect, the neighborhood is perfect, the customers are perfect...why can't this coffee shop be at least acceptable? i'm not sure who does the training for the baristas, but every time i've had a coffee from here it's usually horrible. i think there's only been one time i've had a decent latte made. this time i had an almond milk vanilla latte and was brought an oat milk latte (no flavor). i'm a barista myself, so i can tell the shots were pulled too long as it tasted burnt and the cup was half empty since the milk was steamed to more of a cappuccino consistency than a latte should be. the cake cups i've had from this place are great though! read more

Let me start by saying I was not hungry for cake, but cake was presented to me and I couldn't stop after the first bite. I visited a friend and they had ordered a chocolate cake from Cake Crumbs for their son's birthday and plated a slice for me ... I'd like to share that this slice was quite large! I am not a fan in general of chocolate cake or frosting. GASP, I know! But this chocolate cake and that frosting was just out of this world. Not overly sweet and definitely didn't give me death by chocolate vibes, more so the chocolate frosting was a soft ganache that really tasted like chocolate and not just cocoa powder mixed in a frosting. The cake itself was moist and yet firm and I don't know what sorcery they did but I devoured it. For cake flavors, they offer a variety of options and called to follow up if I wanted any special decorations of the custom cake. I'm so disappointed! This place used to be my go to for cake and cupcakes. Since new ownership this place has gone so downhill. I ordered cupcakes and was provided with the WORST looking cupcakes. The frosting was incorrect (I ordered a buttercream and that's not what I got). All of them were frosted unevenly. I could've frosted them better myself at home or bought better ones for 1/2 the price at the grocery store. I thought maybe it was just a one time thing so I ordered 2 pies for thanksgiving. I cannot even begin to describe how awful the apple pie was. To start, it looked horrible. Like inedible. I tried it and it didn't even taste good. Sad to say I ended up being to embarrassed to bring such a gross looking pie to my family for the holiday. I'm not sure if the new owner has changed bakers/decorators/kitchen staff but boy do they lack the ability to make the cakes like they used to. I attached a photo of a beautiful cake we had bought prior to new ownership and a photo of the new cupcakes they offer here. Not only has the quality of the goods gone down. The atmosphere has changed so much! Used to be such a cute small business I would enjoy going to. Now, when you walk in the the cases are usually empty. How do they expect to sell what they don't have? The ordering system has so many hiccups. When I went to pick up both previous orders they weren't even ready when I got there. I was assured they'd be quick but I had to wait for their baking/decorating team to finish even though I was under the impression they would be done the night before pickup. The ONLY person that was helpful at all was a young man I spoke with on the phone regarding my order. I can't remember his name, maybe Jonathan? Either way he was super helpful. I've also heard who I assume to be management or the new owner getting in loud disputes with his employees! So unprofessional to yell in the workplace and definitely brings the atmosphere down.
