I'm newish to the area and I've been hearing a buzz about this place for a while, so I had to check it out. There are two locations but the one in Canton is temporarily closed. This one is located in Avon in the Old Avon Village plaza. There were plenty of parking when I went. The bakery is pretty spacious with some tables and seats. The display was filled with delicious looking cupcakes and other treats. They are known for their cupcakes. I got a few different ones to try with my family; the Oreo, funfetti, and brownie flavors. We were all very happy with the outcome; they were moist and up there with the best cupcakes I've had in a while. They also have gluten free, vegan, mini cupcakes, and cupcakes kits. Other treat options were the chocolate covered Oreos and cannoli chips and dip. I bought a few of those Oreos and they didn't disappoint. I can't wait to go back and try out more treats! read more

This lovely place is already rated one of the top cupcake shops in CT so the 5 stars should come as NO surprise. Their Avon location is cute and quaint and boy of boy does it smell good when you walk in! I've gone here many times to get some sweet treats for the kids and I. They NEVER disappoint. My daughter usually cons me into getting way more than we need but I'm never truly upset about it because everything is so good. I for one am not a big super sweet frosting person. I've always preferred the whipped cream frosting or cream cheese frosting but their buttercream is something that even I enjoy. They keep their peanut butter options completely separate from the other flavors and even asked if I wanted my peanut butter cupcake in a separate box for allergy purposes. They offer dietary accommodations including gluten free and vegan as well and they have a table of delicious chocolate dipped Oreos and beautiful hot cocoa bombs. There's also an ice cream counter. Pretty, tasty cupcakes in a miriad of flavors In the area, so decided to try out a bakery I've had my eye on. This place wears its sweets on its sleeves. The entire place screams "we're a sweets place" Which I appreciate. Tons of different cupcakes and confections adorn the displays, and I let the girlfriend pick a pack. The cupcakes were very light but sturdy. Kind of like a angels food cake without the hard exterior and not as chewy. The frosting was very dense, like disks of buttercream on each cupcake. The flavors were well balanced, the filled cupcakes had a creamy curd which didn't make the cupcake soggy. They were sweet, but not overbearingly sweet. Price came out to about 21 dollars for 6. Not too bad for the quality. These are good cupcakes, but not the best I have ever had. The dense frosting detracts from the soft crumb of the cupcake, which makes it easier to eat but also makes it less cohesive. I wanted to try Cake Gypsy after reading about it on a gluten free blog! It seemed like a really good option for celiacs..... They have a separate prep station for gluten free cupcakes, including frosting and toppings, which, in theory, would definitely prevent cross contamination. However, at the time we went to Cake Gypsy, the girl preparing our cupcakes noticed the empty frosting bag on the gluten free prep station, and said she'd frost them in the back. Next she came and added toppings from the drawers next to the regular cupcakes. If you're celiac, you may see how this could be a problem. Probably a great option for those who have gluten sensitivities, but not those with allergies or celiac. If they used the separate gluten free station, it'd probably be great. My husband said the cupcakes tasted great, so they get an extra star. The service was also super friendly. They have tons of flavors and plenty of places to sit down and eat a cupcake! read more

I was paying enough attention during my infrequent Avon visits to know that Cake Gypsy would be a good dessert bakery. The problem for me was that, I was not paying enough attention to know that Cake Gypsy is in fact, absolutely freaking fantastic! I finally visited. I was immediately struck by how uber cute the shop is. Clean whites. Bright Yellows. Candy borders. Giant Cupcakes. At least one Giant Ice Cream Cone. Wood floors. Cupcake tower after cupcake tower. And so on. And SO forth. 10/10 atmosphere that I didn't see coming. The cupcake options were top tier in terms of types and quality. I don't know how they possibly can have so many on display. There must have been around 30 varieties and about 10 of each kind on display. They can't possibly sell that many cupcakes while they're still peak fresh can they? I don't know that, but I know this. I bought a half dozen to split with my family. I had a Coconut Cream cupcake on Day 1 and a Lemon Raspberry on Day 2. They were maximum fresh. My son said the same thing about his Ice Cream Sundae cupcake and Reese's Cup cupcake. That's all I need to know. We also agreed that they're our favorite cupcakes in CT. They're standard sized cupcakes rather than oversized, which I appreciate. They're priced accordingly, and frankly seemed like great value. The cake was light rather than dense and heavy. The icing was perfectly formed, but still smooth and velvety. The flavors were pitch perfect. I cannot imagine better cupcakes for my tastes. I was focussed on the cupcake side of the business, but I did notice that they had ice cream as well. Their website mentions hot chocolate bombs. I don't even want to know about those. After much mulling, I've figured out what "bugs" me about this place - it belongs on the coast. It feels like it belongs in a beach town, but instead is a perfect summer stop inexplicably in Simsbury. There are designated parking spots, and it shares the building with a shipping store. But when you walk into the mercifully air conditioned space and are greeted by the cheerful bright yellow - total beach vibes! The Cake Gypsy has everything but cake - cupcakes a plenty, ice cream, cannoli, candies, and frozen drinks. (I recommend a frozen drink on a hot day while you browse cupcakes. The hot chocolate is delicious) The cupcakes are amazing to see and will take time to pick the best one. They're moist, the frosting is plentiful without being too sweet, and by the register there's even a pup cupcake! The owner is super friendly, thanked us for coming in while we thought over our frozen drinks (they have some seating by the entrance), and let us know where her other establishments are located. JUST the best cup cake I've ever had. I was asked to bring gluten-free desserts and vegan surprises for desserts too. I went to my favorite bakery -cake, gypsy- and left an order for the next day to Big party. I invited over 25 people and the desert was the most amazing part of the food of the day. The cupcakes we got from here were soft, moist, and flavorful. The frosting and toppings were tasty and complimentary, with a great flair... BUT: they cross contaminate their gluten free products. They have a marked area for dairy free and gluten free cupcakes, but when they ran out of frosting, they went in back and continued to frost our cupcakes like the tips don't touch the regular cupcakes. It's hard to tell what's sweeter -- the gorgeousness of the store, the tempting variety of their goods, or the sweet disposition of their staff. We visited Cake Gypsy Avon yesterday to pick up some cupcakes with our grandchildren in mind. When we told Missy who they were for, she became an enthusiastic fountain of knowledge letting us know which ones were very popular for kids. She was as sweet as could be, and a real joy to work with. We ended up with 6 cupcakes including MIssie's kid-friendly recommendations of Birthday Cake, Cookie Dough, Worms & Dirt, and Mermaid. They were gorgeous to look at and were delicious. We bought two cake slices for ourselves - cinnamon walnut and crumb cake. They were both very good but I'd say the cinnamon walnut was moister and better. Everything cost $23 and that was a very fair value for what we received. Welp. This is my 2nd time trying to buy cupcakes here unsuccessfully. So my review is on the service of this visit alone. But as a side note, the service was a focal point of my last visit. I came in on my lunch break and tbh, I don't know their whole line up, but I figured I'd peek at the cupcakes while the people in front of me were speaking with the person assisting them. This way I would know exactly what I wanted once I got to the woman. As I approached, I believe it was the owner and someone in training who stepped off to the side and another woman stepped forward to offer assistance. I let her know I wanted 4 cupcakes, and would list them when she was ready. I planned to list them in order of closeness to her in order to be efficient (in my head maybe??). She missed the first one because she was listening to what was being said off to the side and missed the type of the second one for the same reason. Before we could finish, it seemed that she stepped away because it was discovered that some small white boxes were stickered incorrectly, as I could see who I believe to be the owner, showing multiple boxes and the woman who was helping me pick some up as well. I'll try to be fair. Maybe this didn't take the 5 minutes it seemed like. However, if you've already started to fulfill my order, why is it more important to stop and start working with mis-stickered boxes while I'm watching and waiting for you? While it seems like a nice place, I think I'll continue to patronize places like TBS-I've never walked in and had an issue like this more than once. read more

Something I learned recently is that if there are any cupcakes that are "out "they can actually make them in the back for you! Their friendlessness and obvious passion for what they do clearly shined through as we spoke briefly. They were down-to-earth and passionate in their business. The cannolis were definitely one of the best we've had in CT. I will definitely be back for them again! The cupcakes had a great base, soft and moist. Most of the frosting were a little too sweet for me and seemed to overpower the intended flavors like chocolate or coffee. Cake is one of my top ten food groups and I have high expectations when it comes to cake products, especially when I went to place an order of two dozen cupcakes for my bridal shower at the Cake Gypsy in Avon. Let me tell you I do not exaggerate when I say my mind was BLOWN! These cupcakes are not only beautifully decorated, but they taste like heaven! I ordered a wide selection of flavors including monkey business, s'mores, vanilla, chocolate, lemon, strawberry, etc. There are pictures of all their cupcake offerings with descriptions on their website which made it great for ordering for someone like me who had never been. I was so happy by the service I received and how the staff took the time to make sure the peanut butter frosted cupcakes were put in a separate container from the other cupcakes so I could be sure my sister in law with a severe nut allergy could enjoy the nut free cupcakes. We had a few hundred mini cupcakes made here for my sister's wedding and they were a huge hit. The first thing my 5 year old niece says anytime she gets into my car is, "Can we put on Beyonce and go to Cake Gypsy?" I live in West Hartford and will happily trudge over Avon mountain come rain, snow, sleet, or hail for these delicious cupcakes.
