When you enter the store you are instantly hit with the satisfying smell of baked goods and fresh bread so heavenly! While I was impressed with my trip to Small State I'm only rating 4 stars due to the minimal gluten free baked goods options. As many bakery's in the area have at least 3-4 different options I only saw the one for this trip so my friends were limited on what they could have from the menu. The turkey bacon sandwich was layered with flavor and the bacon was a nice thick slice. The aioli complimented the turkey and cut back on the harshness of the arugula. The focaccia itself was tasty. The bread was airy, chewy, and perfectly golden brown. I did enjoy the latte I got because of how bold the coffee was. The beans were roasted perfectly and made the drink itself very smooth and robust. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Everyone seemed very pleasant and the environment itself was very cool. Place is great I have been to both the Avon and the West Hartford locations. Loved the chocolate chip cookies, sour dough bread and the baguettes. Think people are hating this place because they are comparing the food to Stop & Shop. The taste is pretty different. Sour Dough from NY, Vermont that was "baked today" but feels half frozen is $7 at Whole Foods ... so complaining about $10 for a local one is kind of wild. Yesterday I had a baguette from the West Hartford location. Ate it on the way home. It was so good. Finally tried a sandwich. I had their Turkey Sandwich today. Shit was life changing. Haven't had an experience like that since having a steak at J Gilberts for the first time. It is like wow this is what real food taste like and what our parents & grand parents would eat before everything was mass produced. Everything was local and delicious. Price wise it was $2 more than a regular sized Jersey Mikes Turkey Bacon sandwich. This place is obscure and a little bit hard to find unless you have navigation! But once you find the front door and walk through, you are greeted warmly with many smiles from the workers, and the smell of fresh baked goods I came specifically for the sourdough bread and there it was sitting in the showcase ready to rock! I purchased a sliced loaf As I was looking through the showcase, I saw these blueberry scones that looked beautiful, and the love was showing through. They were talking to me. This bakery opened in 2023. There's also another location in Gastro Park West Hartford. This location in Avon was very cute. There were some seating and service was good. I know they're known for their baked goods, sandwiches, and coffee. On this visit, I ordered some treats such as chocolate chocolate cookies, muffin, and croissants. They're known for their sourdough cinnamon rolls and croissants; it usually sells out quickly. What I've tried was very good and can't wait to go back and try out more of their stuff. read more

first of all i don't come here often but when i do it's always a home run! i tried the breakfast sandwich today and it was so good. really pricey though, that's my only complaint. the total was $18 and some change. which is absurd to me for a breakfast sandwich. however, it was fresh, delicious, and filling! so i guess it was breakfast and lunch. also the croissant was nice and crispy. 10/10. hits the spot for a pregnant mama:) also the inside is nice, cozy, and clean. customer service was excellent. i would come back more often if i could! overall, a great morning! read more

Back home, and my favorite part about New England are the quaint coffee shops that make me feel like I'm in an overcast day of Gilmore Girls. I can't write enough good things about my first impression of Small State Provisions. I have many go-to's for local coffee shops around here, and somehow it's trumped them all. The real kicker for me along with the quality, energy of the shop, and delicious flavors... is the affordability. I got a large, frothy, whole-milk latte and a gooey molasses cookie for the price of what would be one grande latte at Starbucks. I was able to get my work done and enjoy the atmosphere with one of my new favorite lattes to date! And the team was so kind. Kudos! read more

As we walked in we were greeted by a super friendly young lady who guided us through the day's pastries and breakfast sandwiches. I was pretty hungry so checked out their two breakfast sandwiches. One was a traditional egg and cheese, but the other one was a Jambon Beurre that caught my eye. It was a baguette with ham, cheese and butter. Not exactly a low calorie option, but holy cannoli was it great. The roll was a great combination of crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a pretty thick combination of ham and cheese nestled inside the buttered baguette. It was $9 and I thought it was a pretty great value. My wife went with a blueberry scone ($4) that she enjoyed as well. Our two coffees were a reasonable $2 apiece. We sat at a table for two inside, and noticed they had a few outside tables as well. Small State also sells a nice variety of Sourdough Breads, Baguettes, a Rosemary Focaccia, a Japanese Milk Bread, plus scones, muffins, a Banana Bread, a Gluten Free Cake, Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chewy Ginger Cookies, those two Breakfast Sandwiches, and some lunch sandwiches (how about a Curry Roasted Cauliflower 'Banh Mi')? I also heard they make pizzas once a week, so you can bring that next door to the Hopmeadow Brewery and enjoy the Nobel Prize winning combination of pizza and beer. read more

I recently stopped at Small State in Avon. I would like to frequent this business more but I get together with 4 or 5 ladies for coffee and the set up in this location is not conducive to that kind of gathering. They had a nice selection of food in their display but I was rather surprised to see that the scones were all significantly burnt. Not just dark but burnt. I've been a Small State fan since the early GastroPark days and I visited in Weekend No. 2 of the new Avon launch. Small State is a craft bakery that focuses on a smaller number of high quality baked goods compared to some other bakeries with more variety. In their earliest days, sourdough bread was a particular focus, but their expanded offerings include things such as scones, muffins, cookies, milk bread, baguettes, cinnamon rolls, occasional pizza nights, vegetarian sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, granola, etc. In my experience, they execute at a very high level. Those used to waiting their turn to walk through the thin Small State door at GastroPark, will appreciate the large Avon space. You can see the available baked goods as you wait in line. There are also several tables for dine in. On my visit to Avon, I bought a loaf of milk bread, 3 cinnamon rolls with cherry icing, a blondie, a cheddar pecan scone and a chocolate chip cookie. All of these items were great. I'm not a pro baker, but I think Small State typically tries to start with a sourdough base when possible. Their chocolate chip cookies have visible salt crystals, and the sweet salt contrast is awesome. The crispy scone is one of my favorites and has great dairy and salt flavor. This was my first time ordering their milk bread, which I believe is a Japanese style of white bread. The large golden loaf had a three ring circus of a top, and it was delicious as thick buttered toast. The cherry icing on the cinnamon roll was vibrant, organic and tasty. The blondie was soft, crumbly deliciousness. The Avon Small State sells coffee beverages made with coffee beans roasted by their GastroPark neighbor Alvarium. They also sell the Alvarium beans. Alvarium is one of my favorite CT Roasters and my black cold brew was very good. I applaud Small State for their efficiency in managing a large number of customers. The line went more quickly than I would have guessed. Small State is off to a great start, and Avon is lucky to have them. Five Starts. read more

It's finally here. We've been waiting for this ever since they announced last year that they were opening. This new place (the original is still operating at GastroPark) is just a gem of a place. It's a bakery/cafe all in one with a ton of baked goods to eat. We stopped by on Day 2 and a Kevin Masse, the owner, was handing out free salted chocolate chip cookies. I had planned to hold on to it but in the time we waited to order, I had scarfed it down. It was so good. Then we had to decide what to order. We got a Japanese Milk Bread for use later. I got a everything scone which was really different and good. While I've had everything bagels, I've never had it with a scone. Thankfully it worked more than it should. It helps the scone is fresh and not dry so it ended up being something I'll get time and again. A little salt, a little sweet. Just really interesting and different. My dining companion got the banana bread. Good stuff. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the coffee which was excellent. I got a cafe americano and it was so smooth and flavorful. Inside has some seating with a bit of an industrial feel. Given the location, I have no doubt I'll be back time and again. This place will be here for a long time. read more

Small State Provisions is one of my favorite bakeries. The pastries are always a delight and well displayed in a clean, inviting environment with friendly staff always willing to help. They excel at laminated dough pastries, something that is lacking elsewhere in the area. I enthusiastically will drive 30 minutes one-way just to pick up pastries from them on weekends. Enjoyed a Saturday morning there, sharing good eats with my husband -- having a breakfast sandwich, latte, and a slice of the pumpkin chocolate chip bread (although I only took a bite and brought the rest home for my son). What originally brought us in was the desire to buy a sourdough boule, as we had a wonderful meal at Millwright's which used sourdough from Small State Provisions in one dish. (Although my husband's homemade sourdough made from a starter originating out of San Francisco that has been going for years is probably the best sourdough we think we've had...) Small State Provisions has been the best we've come across for sale in CT thus far. The outer crust is crispy and a caramelized brown color, and it has a good, well-developed crumb on the inside. Please read the whole review, and the summary can be found at the end! The highlight was the cinnamon bun which is only served on the weekend. The dough and cinnamon sugar mixture are perfectly sweet and moist. The icing is a great compliment to the bun (although, I personally believe it would be even better if the icing was less sweet). I will definitely be back to get more! One related (but separate) thing to note is that the day I went they had the cinnamon rolls half off because they came out smaller. However, in my opinion, this bakery will absolutely have a hit on its hands if it keeps the smaller size and $3 price. It was the perfect size for everyone in my family, and it enabled us to buy a bunch! We also got a few sandwiches to try. The sandwiches that were already prepped for purchase, like the tomato chutney and jambone buerre, tasted great but were smaller than I'd expect for the price (although, to their credit, they use organic ingredients which likely make their products more expensive than other bakeries). We also got the breakfast sandwich which was great and the size was more like what I'd expect! Overall, this place has great food, great customer service, and a great atmosphere. I made an order of a couple dozen pastries to bring to my office. then there were many scheduling conflicts on my end, but Kevin and his staff was very flexible and accommodating. The pastries were amazing. I made sure I got the pain au chocolat, which was the perfect combination of crunchy, light and filled with the perfect amount of chocolate. I was also able to sample a slice of the banana bread which was deliciously moist and sweet. Also the blueberry scone was hearty and delicious. Live in Avon and been here so many times in the past couple of years. Started coming here weekly with my spoiled ten year old in between school drop offs and she and I and my husband all love it. Avon and Simsbury are an embarrassment of riches when it comes to coffee shops and bakeries (Doms, Beanz and Co, Bou Nom, Pure Love, Coffee Trade, etc.!) All have their specialties and different vibes IMO. So, so glad Small State took a shot on this small industrial location on Old Farms Road - only a couple of minutes from the 44/202 intersection. Still - it seems to be busy for good reason! Best coffee I think. Hands down. Great, friendly, quick service. Best breads. I have been meaning to try this small bakery, located in GastroPark for a while, and was finally able to. Of note they do have a slightly strange schedule, so make sure to look them up on their website before going in person. I was able to finally visit this location on a early Saturday morning. They seem to have some products which change week to week, but always have some staples such as the mini baguette and focaccia. I have tried both of those as well as some pastry items, such as the berry scone and cookie. I think what stands out is there focaccia, which is fluffy, oily, flavorfull, moist in all the best ways. The rosemary olive oil, one in particular is absolutely delicious and goes good even just on its own. When I went on that early Saturday morning, I also was able to grab a delicious cup of coffee from the cute little coffee shop located in the store right next door. And then took both of these items outside onto the little picnic benches they have set up. I was able to enjoy a delicious, locally made breakfast. read more

This place is super awesome with a minimalist vibe. They have a variety of cookies, breads, and sandwiches, but to an amount that is overwhelming. The quality of the food is excellent, like you can tell they just baked their stuff earlier in the day. My experience has been with the breakfast sandwich which is a generous piece of delicious focaccia bread, an scrambled egg the size of a small brownie and arugula plus some sort of sauce. This thing is not only delicious but super filling. I ate one sandwich at 10 am and by 4 PM I was not still hungry. It cost about $9 which is a good prize when you think about how fulfilling it is. Drove four hours to visit Small State Provisions - and it was well worth the trip! Everything is freshly made with quality ingredients. We went for brunch, next day for lunch. Delicious Sourdough and Rosemary Focaccia! Ginger and chocolate chip cookies, chewy and delicious! Tahini blondies Yum! Took home the Maple Granola, the big bag, chock full of goodness, sadly, it's gone already. It was my lucky day - fresh baked Kouign-Amanns! A very special treat, hard to find. This is a legit bakery, fresh homemade croissants too! Enjoyed a Croque Monsieur, the real deal, with bechamel, so good. My companions loved the avocado toast - the bread makes it exceptional. There are a lot of bakeries within a 20min radius of small state, and it is my favorite for croissants. The menu is small, which isn't an issue for me. Their croissants are the highest of quality and taste amazing! I've only been on the weekends and they sell out quickly, so get there as close to opening time as you can. read more

I want to love this place so bad. :( I realize as a NYer my expectations are high, but seeing as the owner tauts NY bakery experience I do expect more. I wish they used better quality butter.. it's grainy and flat. And they tend to sell out of specialty items by like 10am... With those fancy ovens youd think they could churn out more. Everything here is hit or miss. Nothing stands out as exemplary. I so want to support local businesses and there are so few bakeries in the area, but I will only be a patron here in a pinch. A friendly recommendation to the owners... If you are going to offer breakfast sandwiches and make your customers wait up to 15 minutes the eggs should be freshly made and hot, not made hours in advance and pressed into a square only to be served room temp. read more
