Just came back from an early dinner here and had such a strange/bad experience. I'll break it down - We had a reservation for 10 people including one toddler. I had called ahead a few days to confirm they have high chairs and that we needed one. I also mentioned this to the host when we checked in. The restaurant was pretty empty, but somehow they made us wait 15 minutes for our table - despite having a reservation and checking in on time with our full party. The host gave the canned "we're preparing your table now" when I followed up with him. This was foreshadowing. When we got to the table there was no high chair - they told us none were available and they'd get one to us as soon as one opened up. It turns out there were only 4 in the whole restaurant due to one breaking over the weekend? It took forever to get our orders in. Not for lack of trying. It seemed like they were short staffed for a Saturday and the runners definitely let us feel it. When they dropped off the tortillas, the runner who brought the food told us they were corn so we told him we ordered the half and half. He flatly said "these are corn. Talk to your server" in the most combative tone. Cool cool cool. There were huge gaps where there was no one on the floor to flag down for things during our meal. And it took a really long time before we got to order. We got seated and then waited another 15 minutes before anything went in. The only silver lining to our meal was our server Ashlyn - she was amazing! Our interactions with her were excellent. She was so warm and really did a great job trying to make the best of our time. It just felt like she was spread too thin and didn't get to check in on us that often. They eventually got us the high chair as the entrees came out, but other tables around us were not so lucky and just had to deal with it. We ordered a little bit of everything as a table of 10 with apps and their own dishes does. I think all the food was solid and the platter we got was a good deal. The shrimp stood out as being well cooked and not overdone. All the drinks we ordered were fine if not a little weak/watery. The lady in a green striped shirt (manager?) stopped by twice to ask us if we were doing okay. But this was already towards the end of the meal and nothing could salvage the bad vibes from earlier. We just kept things moving. Overall, this is a management problem and the quality of the experience does not match the price tag. I would hesitate to recommend this place for a group and would definitely not go if you have little ones due to the poor hospitality starting from when you check in with the host stand. The slow meal service and the lack of high chairs made it an overall mediocre experience. 2 out of 10.

We celebrated our 30th anniversary here, and I'm so glad we did, it is so good. I would think it would be compared to Javier's, but it is 1000 times better, in my opinion. Everything was excellent from the food to the service. The Cadillac margaritas were phenomena. We had the Tres Enchiladas de Mariscos (crab, lobster, and shrimp), and they were absolutely delicious. We also ordered the Ahi Ceviche, and honestly, it was probably the best I've ever had. We wanted the churros but they were out but the fried ice cream was great. Great food, great drinks, great service, and the perfect place to celebrate 30 years together. We'll definitely be back! It does lean towards the spicer side, I'm not a spice girl (but I'll tell you what you want, what you really really want) and it is still excellent.

Found a nice place to eat when I shop/visit South Coast plaza ! Its located on the lower level by the side entrance near the carousel and Verni chocolate & gelato shop. It has beautiful tropical decor with a huge bar area. There are also semi private dining rooms ,booth seating and patio seating . We chose to sit at the bar since we really wanted to get a drink and just relax and enjoy the vibe. The bartender came over to say hello and took our drink requests and also our food order as well. Got an appetizer of chicken taquitos which was really great generously stuffed with meat and drizzled wirh 3 tasty sauces ! We ordered a couple of drinks 1. Strawberry margarita 2. Cucumber cilantro margarita & two entrees. 1. Carnitas plate ( with rice & beans) 2. Spinach enchiladas ( with rice & beans) *Complimentary chips with salsa & BEAN DIP * The bean dip was so delicious that I hardly used the salsa which was good on its own. Although both entrees was good and satisfying and we could only eat half the meal . Great place for a meet up with friends ! I'm betting the bar scene is great in the pm! Only disappointment was that they don't offer Happy hour ( Sad face).

We decided to try Calo for our weekly lunch date and it was pretty empty at open. We got sat immediately and I decided to go with the steak fajitas. While we waited for our entrees, they served complimentary chips and salsa/beans which were delicious and definitely a plus for the restaurant. The steak fajitas came out presented well but was a bit disappointed in the seasoning. The steak wasn't seasoned well and a bit bland which led to the wraps feeling a little flavorless. I added a decent amount of salsa to add some kind of flavor profile but for the price of these fajitas, most likely wouldn't order again. I will say the restaurant is beautiful but definitely on the pricier side for those looking for a quick meal. I would suggest Cali for a nicer date night or special occasion lunch.

We went for an early dinner on the weekend and were told the wait would be 1 to 1.5 hours, so we were a little disappointed at first. However, the host kindly let us know that there were open seats at the bar, so we decided to eat there instead. The bartenders were incredibly friendly, and more importantly, every single dish we ordered was delicious. The black beans were honestly the best I've ever had. We'll definitely be back!

We came from out of town for the weekend and got lucky with this gem of a place. It was so good we went back one more time before we went home. First time we sat at the bar. Bartenders were very kind and knowledgeable. Made the most delicious drinks. The atmosphere was so beautiful and elegant. The place was very busy. Second time we came back we were sat at a booth. 10/10 both times. Food was spectacular. If we ever come back to the west coast we will make sure this is the first stop.

Fajita salad. It's giving a chipotle bowl vibe. But way less ingredients and a $28 price tag.

I used to love the one in Laguna Niguel and then the service and quality of food started slipping. I thought I would give the one in Costa Mesa try. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were very busy so it was hard to get their attention. I started off with the pineapple margarita, which was amazing. I also love their chips and salsa. Then we had to flag somebody down to take our dinner order. I ordered the fajita salad with no sour cream and asked for dressing on the side. It came with no dressing at all, and no pico, no corn and no pepitas. I didn't say anything about half the ingredients missing from the salad. I did ask for the dressing though and then waited. I had to ask two different people for dressing before I got it. My friend ordered an enchilada which she said was cold and the cheese wasn't even melted on it. She asked for them to heat it up and then they sent a new one out and it was warm, but she said so salty she couldn't eat it. We waited a while for them to take our cards to pay. No one checked on us during the meal overall and underwhelming experience and meal. It's a pretty restaurant though. And it's huge.

Calo Kitchen in Orange County is worth the hype. At first, I didn't understand why people would wait two hours for a table, but after getting lucky with a last-minute opening, I get it. It was delicious. The fajitas were the standout. The steak was cooked perfectly, and everything on the plate, rice, beans, guacamole, onions, was excellent. We also shared the nachos, and they were far from basic. They really went all out. Drinks were great, service was friendly, and the space is modern and sleek. Everyone at the table loved their food. I'd definitely come back.

Calo is conveniently located inside South Coast Plaza, so it's an easy stop if you're in the middle of a shopping day. The ambiance is really nice, plenty of comfy booth seating and a chic, polished vibe that makes it feel a little more elevated than your typical spot. The margaritas were solid and I liked that they can make any of them virgin. I tried the blackberry margarita without alcohol and it was super refreshing. Food wise, it was just okay, nothing bad, but nothing that really stood out either. Overall, it gave me strong Javier's vibes: stylish interior, decent Mexican food, and drinks that are definitely the highlight. That said, the pricing could definitely be better. It feels a little steep for what you get, this would be the perfect place for a reverse happy hour, especially on Sundays during that last hour before closing. It'd make it way more tempting to swing by at the end of a shopping trip.

Service was incredible. Our server Ivan was kind and respectful. Everything he liked and suggested was delicious. I ordered the seafood enchilada trio and my favorite was the lobster. That creamy sauce was fire!!! My friend ordered the filet mignon meal it was sooo good fairly priced and lots of food!! We ordered 3 desserts: churro (my fav), the flan (so good, well made, firm and great texture), and the Deep fried ice cream (my friends fav). We had a great experience. It's a very vibey restaurant, beautiful for a date or a good time with friends

    Mexico City quesadillas
    Tash M.

A+ all around. Service especially- prompt, friendly and barkeep Noah was superbly on point with crafting me an extra caliente mango caliente cocktail! The house salsa is delicious and very fresh. And the Mexico City quesadillas were also fantastic- texture reminded me of a puffy and lighter empanada, and the generous portion of avocado garnish was wonderfully tangy and creamy. Very lively and happy crowd on a Saturday night- would definitely recommend reservations for larger parties. It's a bit pricey but you will get what you paid for.

He gave me a great tip and said when making cafe reservations, it's best to call ahead, because they do sometimes have event buy outs. As far as the ambiance, it is a really beautiful space.
