I was traveling and usually not in Berceley area , chose to stop by at Cal Gyros . Nice and soft speaking gentleman in the front took the order . I ve ordered falafel salad with side of hummus. Food came pretty fast . Salad made freshly after order was placed cakes with potatoes bread . I really enjoyed hummus soft and tender with olive oil. My over all experience was great . Cal Gyro had 2 spits with meat on them but my meat didn't come from there. probably came from some mystery compartment for the wrap orders only. eats: beef and lamb gyro wrap(6.95) -lots of meat, had some lamb flavor, mostly bland. passed on spicy option -tahini sauce and tomatos not tasted, lettuce yes. -had some kind of aftertaste, not sure what it was --wrap smaller than a large burrito. 2.5 stars crumbs: -friendly and fast service but food tasted funny. read more

Two stars is because the food is pretty good. However, I give them 1 star for dishonest service. The first time I went, I got the chicken shawarma salad plate. Pretty pricey, but that's fine if it's great food. However, when I went to pay with my card I asked if I should pay with cash, and he said my card was fine. The price was a bit high and I had to ask AGAIN if they charge for card. He wasn't going to tell me that he was charging me 50 cents more for using the card. Good thing I asked twice. I decided to try again because I liked the plates I saw while walking by. I was going to get chicken shawarma but he recommended getting a mix of gyro and shawarma, so I said okay. The plate was originally $10.95. He charged me $1 for his recommendation and somehow ended up charging more than $14.00 all together. Sales tax is 9%, which should have put me at $13.05. I've been here about 5 to 6 times; especially long nights where I did not have chance to make dinner and I need to stay up to do work.. Well anyways, what made me really write this review is the owner! He's very nice and always try to make conversations with customers. Last night I came here to order some food and he asked me if I was cold because I was shivering and I answered yes. Next thing you know, he cooked up some veggie soup for me so I could warmed up while he was making my order! He gave me the soup, free of charge, and I was so happy; the soup was also very delicious! As soon as we got in around 2:03 a. m. the owner of the restaurant was managing the place and being EXTREMELY rude the entire time I was ordering. The food seemed as if the owner of the restaurant skimped off on the food we ordered and purposefully being VERY difficult. The owner was very combative. I absolutely can't understand why this place has such low reviews... The owner is absolutely delightful, generous, friendly and sincere. The wraps are DELICIOUS!!!!! That's all hubby and I have ever had - the wraps - so I can't speak to the other menu items, but this is by far one of our FAVORITE places. The meat (I had lamb, he had chicken) was cooked and seasoned to perfection, and the wrap has just he perfect amount of chew and crunch. The special spicy sauce BITES (my mouth was zinging and nose running for a few minutes after I'd left the restaurant and long since I finished my meal) but it is soooooo yummy. IIRC, this place is where Meesha's used to be. Is there an Asian Ghetto rule that the same kind of restaurant needs to take over when one folds? Anyway, I love me a tasty lavash wrap (Much prefered over pitas for me) so I was excited to see they made their gyro wraps with it here since Meesha's did their wraps in pita. I got the beef/lamb gyro in lavash. It looked good when first presented (maybe a little on the small side) and the eating started out OK too. Grilled lavash, cucumbers, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, tzatziki at the top . . . but then a bite later I got to the meat . . . and it was doing a nasty dance on my tongue. It tasted dry, burned, and weirdly plasticy. I was raised to always finish my food. You know people starving in Africa and all that, but two bites later I'd had enough and tossed the rest into the trash. It was the worst tasting meat I've eaten that I can remember. Meesha's wasn't exactly gourmet, but they never invoked my gag reflex. D'yar is down the block and Sunrise Deli is 2 blocks away and both are much better. First time trying a gyro. I'd say it was well worth the money! Order: Lamb and Beef Gyro - What an amazing meal to walk around eating. The mixture of the salad and meats complimented each other extremely well. The toppings of the gyro were lightly dressed in sauce and not drenched to mask the beautiful meaty taste of the lamb and beef. Both the meats were tender and cooked close to perfection. Simply an extremely well done burrito style wrap. Service: Although the style of the meals weren't really made for sitting, the chef/server was incredibly funny and cheerful towards my group. He joked around and relaxed the awkwardness around. When paying, he simply took a $10 for cash payments to make a simpler transaction. Overall, I loved the place. Yummy food and great service here at Cal Gyros! Food: I've always ordered the lamb and beef gyros (spicy). It always has a kick of flavor and having just the gyro makes a decent lunch. When I'm super hungry, I get the combo plate for the salad and hummus and rice. They have a variety of options and I like how their food doesn't taste generic. And they definitely do not skimp on the meat. Service: I love the little old man who works here! He always greets me with a smile and asks me how my day is. I have came here 2 times now (since I am not in the area that often) and the first time I ordered a lamb & beef gyro wrap, it was so tasty and filled with flavor. The second time, I ordered the lamb and beef specialty and it was so delicious. Every single thing on that plate was sooooo good. The salad had the perfect dressing drizzled on top, the pita bread and the hummus complemented each other so perfectly. The owner is this amazingly friendly man who engaged in conversation with me for the entire 15 minutes that I was waiting for my food. He was talking to my friend and I, and he handed me a plate of rice along with chicken, lamb & beef to try. He told us that he made his own hot sauce, and that hot sauce was SOO good!!! I had the falafel gyro and it was deeelicious. It was pretty big, so I had half for dinner and half for lunch the next day. I have a friend who is trying really hard to be manerexic. Not exactly. He needs to make weight. He talks about his weight loss and supplements and body building in the same manner that hobbiests speak of plywood, remote control airplanes and leisurely test runs on the airstrip. He talks about supplements and how great they are in a similar manner to a seasoned heroin addict who can tell where the drug was manufactured, how the high can be, and what it was potentially cut with. Well, at least before the heroin addict goes down the path of Requiem, because it all leads down that path. I've never heard of a functional heroin addict. Not like functional crack heads and functional potheads. Heroin always leads down the path that involves puking and it looks quite messy. Yesterday, during the brief beautiful period when the sun came out and all the students pulled out their neglected short skirts and tight pants, I traveled Berkeley to have a very late snack-type meal with this manerexic. It's been at least a year since he's been doing this diet so eating at the Asian Ghetto was a major calorie splurge. Yet, he chose the healthiest thing in the Ghetto. The chicken plate. It was a whole take out container filled with fluffy rice, chicken, some white sauce, some hot sauce and little pita triangles. I tried a bite that included all of the above mentioned carbs and protein. It was quite nice. I might actually get a whole plate next time. I enjoy medi food. I love grilled meats. But I hate paying around $10 for them. Mr. Manerexic ate the whole container. He initially swore up and down that he would only have half, then take the rest home. But he ate the whole thing. And then I ate a cookie with ice cream in the middle in front of him to tease him. Strangely enough he thinks total abstinence works much better than moderation. If only I could purchase his calorie stores in the same manner as carbon footprint offset credits. From this I have learned a wonderful lesson, should I ever cook thanksgiving or xmas dinner: make everyone wait until they are really really really hungry, before serving the food. Or make them diet for 4 months living off skinless boneless chicken breast, steamed in plain water. You will be hailed the next Julia Child, even if you shaked-and-baked, stove-topped it, and had help from Uncle Ben, Trader Joe's frozen prepared foods, and canned greens with cream of mushroom. Honestly, this place is a rip off. There are so many other places to go to for legit Mediterranean food. My chicken gyro (no other side dishes) was a woopin $8..like are you kidding me? I thought as a little extra service, they would add in extra tzatziki sauce in a small container, but nope, only a little bit of sauce inside the gyro. The gyro isn't even a gyro. They use tortilla as a substitution for pita bread..in a gyro?! The chicken is juicy I admit, but everything else was a hot mess. The gyro was more like a burrito than what it was supposed to be, which is very disappointing. I'm a person who loves Mediterranean food and I don't expect much (just good pita bread and tzatziki sauce) but this just didn't cut it. The service was okay. This place is horrible. When I first went in there the owners wife was the only person working there. She had a serious attitude. I ordered my food and it took 10-15 minutes for her to prepare my gyro, which wasn't even a gyro but a wrap of some sort. This was not what I ordered so I told her. She tried to act like she wasn't going to give me my money back. Thats when her husband came in and rectified the situation and gave me my money. The wife was incredibly rude and the food looked terrible. I'm accustomed to thick pieces of meat in my Gyros but what I saw was little sickly thin greasy slices of meat. Food taste like shit!!! First off the lavash is NOT lavash, but mexica tortilla. The gyro lamb and beef mix was extremely salty. The only item that was good was their chicken gyro....and even that was a bit of a long stretch. Also as far as food safety goes...it as deplorable. After washing his hands he used a nasty looking rag that was hanging off the box which he also used to wipe the table and floor...btw the tray you use to catch meat should NOT be banged on the inside of a trash can!!!! read more
