This is my ABQ Beer Passport review for Calavida Cantina. Straight up, they are still growing. They supposedly offer 4 beers they brew. One is an IPA, so no bueno for me. They were out of their Dunkel Nico, which I really wanted to try. Their Mexican style lager is basic and not something I'd order with the other options. That left the Kellerbeir Keller style Pilsner which was ok. So, there will have to be another trip to determine if their beer is worth the trip. They do offer other local beers on tap, but that's not the point of this review. My street tacos were good, similar to Tap 'n Tacos. There was an obvious effort put into the menu and I really want to like it. But, my son has gotten sick both times we've eaten there. My opinion is that their food is super heavy on the seasonings. My own experience was that the Calavida loaded fries were extremely good but I had 2 bone chips in the carnitas. The fried cheese curds are the superstar for appetizers. Service was exceptional with the bartender on it. The patio is one of the best in Rio Rancho and the music was modern. there was a local musician setting up to play. This will be our go-to spot for jumping on the bike trail & finishing with a beer or tacos!

The food was goos but the service was so bad. We saw a waitress one time in over an hour of sitting at our table.

Finally got the chance to try the Birria Tacos from Fuego 505- and they did not disappoint…read more Personally I've always thought nothing can top Los Pookies, but I feel these are in a different lane. Wildly different while still being so freaking amazing. There's a certain spice or something that they use in the Birria that hits just right. That's the only true way I can explain it. I can't tell if the 'consume' is chili or what from here? At Los Pookies it seems to be like a broth, but here is a thicker & spicier sauce which compliments the tacos so well. (please let me know!). It gets quite busy in here especially with it being setup as more of a sports bar, with the TV's and such. They have a shaded patio which I believe also may have a TV* (don't quote me on this part) . All the servers I have had have shown great hospitality. I will continue to return. -- Follow up before I post.. Last time I was here and it was really busy (like 30 min wait busy cuz of whatever game), I was feeling dizzy and they gave me water and a chair & made sure I was okay.. I feel especially this day and age is not something you see ever or expect. So thank you.

Was not crispy, cubed chicken inside was dry, was hoping for some guac but only came with some tomato tasting salsa. Here's the thing for the nachos. The ingredients individually were good, you can tell it's quality. However all together the flavors did not mesh well. Had queso, shredded cheese and Cojita. The asada was tender and good but the red sauce they make and put on top was not very good. Can't say I'll be rushing back anytime soon. Especially for the cost. But is a cool place to hang out at the bar for a drink.

The atmosphere is fun, laid-back, and full of tropical vibes--perfect for unwinding. The drink menu is impressive, with a wide selection of creative cocktails, and the bartender was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, offering great recommendations. Had the jungle bird, which was properly bitter if you're into that. The marikoriko was sweet and fruity, way easy to drink. The Saturn was also wonderfully fruity and easy to drink. I didn't bother with the mai tai because they use kraken instead of an actual funky Caribbean rum, which is wild because they carry Meyers. Probably my biggest critique is to funkify that Mai Tai yo! Float of kraken if you must, but use some Caribbean rum in there! Service was great, atmosphere left room for improvement. Great for a casual few drinks with your meal. Solid spot! Would return again.
