It's a nice, big airy, friendly space with a large outside area bordering Central. I ordered the Penguin Tuxedo Stout which was good. And my wife had a faux mojito which was refreshing. It's passover so I didn't have a burger but they have plenty of options. I got the wings with the Red Chile Ranch sauce and the Brewers Garden Mix salad with red onions and fet which was delicious. I judge my wings by how much I gnaw on them after I eat most of the meat and these were stripped clean. Great place for a relaxed lunch!! read more

But our community of friends call it "Ex-Nogo" because they never have seating unless you have a reservation and yet many tables sit empty.... And their gluten free options SUCK! This is my ABQ Beer Passport review for Ex Novo Downtown. Worlds apart from their HQ in Corrales! Happening spot downtown with an ultra modern building and fantastic concrete patio. Service was on it for a Friday night. We ordered a few beers and an old fashioned, all on par. We split a plate of nachos with unique pickled onions and jalapeño's. It was fun watching the street life. While too far to hit on a regular basis, it has the same great beer as the HQ if you're in the area and a great spot for a bite or after hitting the speakeasy across the street! read more

What a cool place. Love the open layout, the general vibe, the extensive drink list, and the variety of food! I was visiting the area for Yelp work, and this was the place the esteemed community manager of Albuquerque, Mia, decided to take me for our "welcome to my city" dinner ... as I like to call them. Every CM has that can't fail place that they bring other CMs, and this was hers. Started off perusing their beer list, and went for the "Perle Haggard" pilsner, which was light and refreshing, golden colored as it could be. Honestly, with the layer of foam and the light, it looked ready for a beer commercial. Really nice beverage. For apps, we split some carne adovada egg rolls, as Mia said that particular meat is a NM specialty, and I'm all about getting as much local flavor as I can while I can. As a bit of a bbq snob for NC, I couldn't help but compare this shredded pork to that back home just with a more sizeable kick which I enjoyed. While NC still rules the pork scene, this was very tasty, and anything inside an egg roll is going to be just that much better. For dinner, I decided to not hold back, and go straight for the chipotle ribs. These are beef ribs with a chipotle dry rub. They were tender, spicy with a little tang, gentle pull right off the bone, no unrendered fat giving an unpleasant mouth feel. All good, and would reorder. Great meal, would come back! read more

Just visited this place as we are about to move away from NM because we heard it is great. Unfortunately, we had very mediocre food and the beer my husband ordered stated it is a Mexican lager with salt, but it had no salt included. Ordered the giant chicken sandwich, $18 for this sandwich, and it was not giant at all. It was thin, dry, flavorless and such a small amount of chicken. Supposed to have garlic butter fries, but they were plain battered fries. I didn't even take a photo because it looked so sad. My husband even contemplated ordering another menu item because he was still hungry after that sandwich. He didn't due to the amount of each plate. Our friend's food looked fantastic and she said it was delicious and the most steak she's ever been served in the bowl before, and she was also disappointed in our small chicken sandwiches. I follow a famous chef who was on the food network and anytime I hear that chef Marc Quiñones is opening a new restaurant I always try it out. We don't have many world famous chef's in our little town of Albuquerque so it's always a treat to eat this kind of food here. This was our groups first time going to ex novo in downtown and let me tell you, the experience was phenomenal. Every single meal was delicious. Some people might say the portions are small, but this is how fine dining is supposed to be, it's about the flavors and textures and being able to try more than one thing. We had the wings which were some of the best I've ever had. And the egg rolls, my god they were definitely the best egg rolls I've ever had at any Asian place, kuddos on that. The elk carne asada is surprisingly not gamey like you would expect, and it's soft and tender and delicious. I was pretty shocked! We also ordered the eggnog tres leches cheesecake which originally sounded odd but we knew what to expect here so we ordered it knowing it would be good and wow it was one of our favorite deserts in Albuquerque now. Some of the food came out late, but we didn't even complain and they took one of the smaller items off our bill. We went for the music!!! The Amazing Martini Tones were playing there and it was our first time at Ex Novo. It was an amazing new place in downtown Abq on west Central's 700 block. Parking was easy next to the restaurant. It was a Tuesday night and the place was packed inside and out. I think half the ppl came to hear the Martini Tones since they're really good and popular in Albuquerque. It had nice indoor and outside dining with an outdoor stage area for entertainment. Game tables inside, lounge seating plus dining tables, nice bar for drinks or craft beers, and a great menu. We each ordered something different and were all pleased w our choices. Food - we ordered the chicken can baked thighs and a hamburger and fries. Chicken, beans, and rice had zero flavor. Two of us ordered it and agreed. Super bland. Oh, my goodness, we had a fabulous meal at Ex Novo's downtown location! We ate upstairs in the Bitter Nun, their mezzanine bar. It's a little dark so I didn't get good pictures, but our food was beautifully plated and delicious. Service was attentive without being overbearing. I had the churrasco steak and potatoes - skirt steak, twice-cooked potatoes, a tomato and corn relish, and tomato coulis. The steak was tender, beautifully cooked, and the blend of everything was fantastic. My husband really enjoyed his ribs, paired with a green chile agave glaze and Anson Mills grits. The Bitter Nun features liquor options that are a little fancier than the downstairs choices, so I decided to try a De Guzman, made with mezcal, Alma Tepec (a flavorful, lightly spicy chile liqueur), pineapple, and piloncillo. The vibes inside are absolutely on point--modern, welcoming, and just a great spot to enjoy a drink. I ordered a flight to try a variety of their beers and was impressed. We returned to Ex Novo for brunch and I am happy to report that now they have a refreshing and cloudy wheat beer. Their menu has changed with a few less items than during our first visit. Their adovada egg rolls were consistently great. Unfortunately, their burger was not as good as their copycat burger, even with the added green chile. Service was less frantic than last time, when they first started. However, we ordered the egg rolls as appetizers but our burgers came out first. Our server, to correct this mistake, gave us a good price cut. Overall, our experience was pleasant, with some gains (wheat beer option!) and some losses (the burger), keeping my rating at 4 stars. read more

Excellent experience for our first taste of Ex Novo. Came in on a busy Friday night, and were told that the only seats available were outside. That was not a disappointment at all, as the patio was lovely. The service and patio table were 5/5 for us. Carne Adovada Egg Rolls - 5/5 These sounded weird, but were absolutely delish. Excellent mix of savory and spicy flavors, as well as texture variety between the outside of the egg roll, the soft carne adovada and the springy noodles. A must try. Beer Can Arroz Con Pollo - 2/5 This one was pretty disappointing. The chicken thighs had crispy skin but were bone-dry on the inside and not that flavorful. Wouldn't recommend this dish. Jumbo Sea Scallops - 5/5 Another huge winner. The scallops themselves were well executed, but the lavender corn pudding was the star of the show. Although it is s quite sweet, with an interesting texture, a really interesting eat. Oaxacan Mule - 3/5 Pretty big fan of Mezcal, but this one was just ok. This new location really is nice! I love the design and feel of the restaurant itself. The fact it has indoor and outdoor seating, is also nice. Food wise- I honestly hated my entree . I am a vegetarian so got then bbq cabbage and omg it was horrible. Tasted like straight white vinegar- literally disgusting. I love BBQ & this had no taste of BBQ whatsoever. I asked my husband to try it as well to see if I was imagining things & he mimicked it was extremely strong and he couldn't eat it. That being said I know it's a newer location & the small plates we had were good- so I don't want to rate them horribly. My hope is that the chef was new that day or something & they have fixed the recipe error. I'm also pregnant, so the lack of fun NA options was a bit disappointing. Our server told us there were no mocktail options & the menu was all the offered. Lastly it was my birthday. My husband was bummed because he told them ahead of time & the hostess said they would bring out a surprise sweet for my birthday. The server never did anything- so I'm guessing lack of communication amongst the team. I also told the server about the severe vinegar taste in my meal and she didn't apologize or anything at all- so again; I'm assuming maybe just training gaps with new staff. So excited for this new Ex Novo! The menu is exciting. I decided to try the beer can chicken which was cooked perfectly. It came with red beans and rice. The chef personally came and checked on the tables asking how the food tasted. Finished with a lavender macaroon for $8. It was the best tasting desert I've had in a while. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Ex Novo. Visited at 6:30 on a Saturday (not our wisest decision) and the place was hopping! After a bit we found a lone seat at a bar and when the sweet couple next to us wrapped up we grabbed one of their seats and decided to eat at the bar and ditch the hour wait for a table. Good decision since our bartender was fantastic and gave us her tips on the best things to order. We drank mules and margaritas... this is not a floufy cocktail place but they know how to make the classics and they weren't charging $15 a drink either which we appreciated. App was bacon wrapped dates stuffed with almonds and they were DELICIOUS. Yum. 9 for $12. Again, the pricing is smart here. Husband got the chicken sandwich which was huge and the best thing on his plate was the battered fries with homemade ranch dressing. Yum. I got the pasta with the fennel sausage which was rich and meaty and just a hair on the dry side. I still finished 95% of it. We wrapped with the banana bread and ice cream. Perfection. The bread was grilled so there was lots of texture and richness and the ice cream made it all over the top. The drinks were tasty also offering non-beer alternatives for those who don't drink beer (like me). My friend enjoyed the beers on tap however, and would recommend it. DELICIOUS!!!! My family had dinner last night. My first time there. I am not a beer person but 3 of our party did the 4 glass tasting. Doing a sip here and their was definitely fun. We also tried 3 of the margaritas on the cocktail menu. Traditional, mezcal and Paloma....all were good but by aclamation the mezcal was tops. The macaroni with green chili and the Mac with bacon were delicious. 5 star chicken sandwich, small steak salads, Ceasars salad with chicken, top notch burgers, wonderful brussel sprouts and my favorite asparagus calabacitas! Service was excellent. Met the Chef. He is apparently new. A few changes in menu since his arrival but we weren't complaining. Will definitely go back. Plenty of parking close by. Took a trip upstairs to the "Bitter Nun". Want to go back and try the oysters. Located upstairs in the restaurant. Dying to have dinner there. You have access to both menus. Got to try it here last weekend. It's a big location with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, easy access parking across the street, and close to several concert venues.. Unfortunately, the layout from the place brought in all the street noise from Central. Service was friendly and the head chef brought out most of the dishes (my chef friend used to work with Chef Marc so that's how this place got recommended). There's a lot of options on the menu, with several items being a little pricey. I got the elk, in which the chimichurri balanced the salted caramel well (surprisingly) and was the perfect size even for one of the small plates. Some of the elk pieces were tough and the dish could've been a little warmer. My friend got the chicken and rice and we got the grilled banana bread for dessert (that grilled layer on the outside with the warm, soft banana bread on the inside). I normally don't come downtown often, so I don't know that I'd be back anytime soon, but it's worth another try 2024 #70 read more

We really liked our first experience at ex novo. The place is very cool. They remodeled it nicely. There is lots of indoor or outdoor space. I really like the bathroom too, I think it has some original features, or at least it looks like it does. The food was good too. My favorite was the burrata salad. Our server suggested the carne adovada egg rolls, which were really good too. I was happy he suggested them. My husband got the wings. He really liked them, I wasn't a huge fan.
