Stopped in for a coffee and a small bite. Coffee was on about the same level as Tim Hortons (nothing special) they do a lot of savoury baking so I tried two different pieces. I'd tell you the names but the girl working the counter didn't know what they are called in English. Oh well! Anyhow one was crescent shaped and had a crumbly exterior fried coating and was filled with ground meat. I think by the texture it was beef. Not seasoned and was pretty bland. With some seasoning this could be pretty spectacular - but this is probably the traditional way it's made. The second was a flaky pastry with a few slices of cold cuts inside. I love this bakery. Best Portuguese tarts I've found so far in Toronto. The pastry is so flaky! I used to frequent this spot (pre-covid) for lunch with some coworkers. Although service wasn't great, the food more than made up for it. I have been meaning to head back for some time, but I haven't been in the area for a while. The other reviews aren't lying. The customer service is horrible, I honestly use to think they were racist but now I see that they just have poor service all around. If you go all the way down to 5 years ago reviews, nothings changed but one. Service still sucks, unnecessary lines still form, attitude still very much present and they still very much pick and choose who they want to give their attention too. However, that night time shit of being ignored because there are my present has stopped, mainly cause those females have either been fired or on Matt leave. Caldense is one of my favorite Portuguese style bakeries. After a trip to Lisbon and being introduced to Portuguese desserts Caldense is a good alternative to flying to Lisbon! I'll drop by for Pasteis de nata, some pastry I haven't tried yet or breakfast. Typically locations don't have electrical outlets or wifi so there not setup that way for working but there are usually plenty of seating so if you got your own power and can tether, it's great. read more

Nice to find a Bakery & Cafe open this late(9 pm). Walking inside with a Bakery/Cafe setting of the European atmosphere but not over the top. There's not much Menu/Menu-boards/Descriptions which made selecting an item for a Caldense noob a bit difficult. That's why I didn't know "Custard Tarts" where their specialty until I saw it on their Truck driving away. I got a Cappuccino($2.48) which they note using Sical Brand. The Apple Square($1.95) was written on the receipt as Quadrado Maca. Both were very enjoyable. Notice the FOAM on my Cappuccino like a Snow Mountain. read more

Well, it seemed like a nice place before entering it, as through the window we saw HUGE variety of tarts, cakes and pies etc, but never made it in, as were always rushed home, to the building next to the bakery. Until one evening we felt craving for hot chocolate and a sweet cake. For our lucks the place is open late, until 9 PM. We bought two cakes and drinks and enjoyed at home. The cakes were good, but the service not, they didn't care about us doing business with them or were interested in selling their stuff anyway. We thought that this was just that time, but it got worse later on, until we gave up this BS. But the cakes we got were good. At least something ;) read more

Have been coming to this bakery for years, since I first opened. They are know for their Portugese Custard Cups, which only a few years ago where 65 cents. The custard cups are now $1.10 which is not bad, but the quality of the custard is no longer as food. The new custard cups are more like a gelatin cup.....nothing like custard now. Now not to say that the bakery is not wonderful. The decor is nice, the service is good with both wait staff and counter service. With regard to the pastry, I highly recommend the canoli which is excellent but expensive at $2.65 each. Just last year the canoli price was $1.75. It seems everytime I stop in the prices have gone up drastically. Right now the best value for taste and price is the tiramisu at a price of $2.60 for a fairly large piece. Another annoying thing is that none of the pastries are labeled with a price, which makes for a rude awakening at the register. I would rather know ahead of time. Other than that, great place! Unless you're a man the women here will not give you good service! Seriously these women (most of them) flirt with any dude that gives them any attention and it's no secret in the community! I haven't been here for a good long while but this (today) afternoon I bought some shrimp patties (they have shrimp and beef Portuguese style patties) for my children. After a long day of work and then a work event I decided to grab more shrimp patties since I had none earlier. It was late around 10:30pm. When I got in two men where ahead of me and of course the waitress (she dyes her hair black and straightens it..her daughter waits for her sometime and she seems more of a Brazilian than Portuguese ) was being flirtatious as usual and she took my order. I do not eat meat just seafood so I asked how many shrimp she has and she said 3 so I bought all 3. I saw 3 more patties that I assumed was the beef. I went home ready to eat but when I opened 1 up it was beef! I opened up the other 2 and they were all beef! I went back 10mins to closing and told her it asked for shrimp and they were all beef. I never spoke rudely or made her feel stupid. She told me she only had 1 shrimp like she didn't just inconvenience me and sold the other 2 shrimp that I wanted. She did not apologize and her attitude was unacceptable. This place disappoints me! I swear I haven't been here for a year and a half. They don't need my business because they have the caffeine and sweets but I'm sure others who are forced to go there for whatever reason experience this too. read more

I love this bakery. The service is a bit "euro style", you should be flagging down the staff to get service. The prices are fair given the superior quality of the food, there are few places that make better custard tarts and "rissóis" in the GTA. Some reviewers have noted a decline in quality - I have not noticed any such decline. Their food is as good as ever. Maybe the real Portuguese café is too much for some "mange cake" clientele? ;) In the end, this is not a Canadian café. This is Portuguese all the way. A good majority of the clients are Portuguese speaking, and all their staff speak Portuguese as their first language. As a homesick Portuguese guy, there is no better replacement for a traditional café than Caldense. Be aggressive (and polite) with the wait staff, flag them down, and let them know if you plan to order more when you first order. They'll just bring you the bill right away if you don't. If you can, bring along someone who speaks Portuguese so they can explain everything to you. read more

I am writing this after being TRAUMATIZED by a cockroach crawling on the counter and over the pastries wrapped in clear wrap, right by the cash!! When I brought it to the attention of the girl behind the counter she reacted as if this was normal and told me she knows and has already told the owner.....so where is the owner??? Why is this happening? Roaches crawling on counters in broad daylight? Just because Caldense has a good reputation and steady flow of customers does not mean this should be happening without being tended to. read more

On my way to a friend's house, I decided to stop here and pick up some baked goods for us. BAD IDEA. I stood by the case of baked goods and waited way too long for nothing. Everyone working there saw me waiting and made no acknowledgment of my presence. A line started to form at the cash register and they were being helped. Okay, service is pretty bad. But if you go in expecting terrible service, everything will be fine. The custards are really good - IF you get one that was made that day - always ask if you're not sure. It's usually quite obvious - if fresh there will be a giant, mostly untouched tray. If stale, there will be a random few strewn about. They usually keep the fresh ones in the back until they sell the stale ones. Terrible, I know, but that's how it is and if you don't like it they will tell you not to come back. If you ask, they will honestly tell you how long they've been sitting out. The breads are really good. I have sat down for coffee and breakfast a few times and it is almost always really good! They are just inefficient so don't come here if you are in a hurry. read more

I really have never had customer service this poor in my entire 30 yrs!! you walk in there (no one else in line but you,when it's not busy!) and get no eye contact to acknowledged that they know you're waiting for service! they continue doing random stuff until they finish! There could be two girls doing the same thing but neither of them will stop to serve a customer! They literally ignore ppl...it's a really horrible place to settle for when u want something quick in the neighborhood !!! I really really dislike this place! The ABSOLUTE WORST customer service of any place I've ever been to. Multiple cashiers standing behind the counter all pretending to be too busy and purposely avoid servicing you. Its sad to admit that I've been here more than a few times and I have never heard any single waitress ever say thank you. This place is an authentic Portuguese bakery, first introduced to me by my Portuguese fiancée. Usually we drop by for a cappuccino or latte with an egg custard dessert - delicious! Also, the breakfast omelette is good. Great value for the quality of food you get. read more

I have been ordering the same thing every day for a few months and there are some who can't get the order right. You might find one or two lazy staff offering slow service, and sometimes rude. They like to chit chat behind the counter or with friends. There are two others (maybe mother and daughter) offer good service, but they are usually busy helping customers. The prices changes daily depending on who's serving and I'm probably overcharged. I don't see prices anywhere. I'm very patient, but I doubt I'd go back there. read more

Very poor service. There were about four or five employees behind the counter not doing much and none of them could be bothered to ask what I requested. Upon asking for my sandwich, there was no eagerness to get it made. Waited a good 10 minutes before someone began making my order which would've been done at most Portuguese bakeries in that time frame. While I was waiting for my sandwich to be made, there was an employee that I could see in the back attaching slices of cake to wax paper with no gloves and occasionally LICKING HER FINGERS...cheers for that. Asked for cebolada 'sautéed onions' and got raw ones instead...it was the only topping I ordered and they couldn't get it right. Won't be coming back to this location anytime soon. read more
