Calexico is a neighborhood favorite for me. It's one of those places I return to again and again. The rolled quesadillas are a must-order, as is the smoked queso. I also really enjoy the shrimp bowl. Most dishes are flavorful with a nice amount of heat. The vibe is fun and laid back, making it a great option for a casual dinner with friends or an easy date night. Called to takeout food and it was ready in 15min. Very quick. Chips and guac. Chips were typical tortilla chips, not salted (or barely salted), not stale which was good, but nothing special. The guac was quite disappointing, it definitely needed some salt and some acidity. I went home and added some myself. Crispy brussel sprouts. Too spicy for me (I have poor tolerance to spice though). And seemed really oily as there was a lot of oil sitting on the bottom. Stumbled in on this restaurant after being hungry and looking for absolutely anything to eat. I did not expect to be so pleasantly surprised. I got their lunch special which is two tacos of your choice which also comes with a small chips and guac as well as rice and beans OR a salad. I tried their pork and fish taco and I was blown away because the fish taco was so good. It made me wish I got two of those instead. Its a piece of fried fish cooked to perfection. The lunch special size is also no joke, I was not able to finish everything and the tacos are so large I was so full after eating my tacos alone. Looking at the salad that they offered, it wasnt your typical sad salad that they give you either, it was filled with roasted corn and beets. Welp, this is probably more of a review of Seamless/Grubhub than it is of Calexico, but you know what? Customer service. I ordered a meal from here and an hour later a guy shows up and delivers something. I accepted it and lo and behold it's someone else's meal, from an entirely different restaurant. To make things even more delightful, the recipient of the meal lives in Chicago. Well, that's the digital age, right? Time and space are smashed and the algorithm has no idea what makes sense. I live in Brooklyn, the recipient lives in Chicago, somehow the meal gets picked up from a restaurant somewhere in the New York City area and delivered to me. I hope the person in Chicago managed to get something to eat and didn't spend an hour on the phone trying to speak colloquial English to people willfully refusing to understand. Calexico, for its part, was like -- hey, it's not our problem. There's nothing we can do about this. Yes, we see your order in the system but it's outside of our delivery area and no we're not going to explain why we were willing to deliver it or why you received a validation code from Seamless, so I guess you're going to have to suffer, and also talk to Seamless, although we can't tell you how to get in touch with them for this sort of thing, you're on your own. So I called Seamless, after arguing with the Calexico manager for a while about whether they were responsible in any sense for whether I got the food I'd ordered from them or not, and I had a somewhat happier experience with Seamless, although they outsource their customer service to people in the Far East who speak Business English, but you know what? They were interested in my problem and in giving me my money back, unlike my neighbors from whom I've ordered food many times right here in Brooklyn, you guessed it, Calexico. So, friends, I would say this: Calexico is not interested in helping you. Their food is pretty good, but you know what? Fatty Daddy is better, and there are abundant local places that are also awesome. Avoid them, because they don't care. Calexico demonstrated to my complete satisfaction that when you call them on the phone they are interested primarily in getting you off the phone and out of their hair. I ended up ordering a pizza, and, wow, the pizza guys got me my food in like twenty minutes. Calexico is now officially a part of my past and it should be part of yours too. read more

Super kid friendly - kids menu and crayon! I like their taco salad but they used to have a taco disco on the bottom but they changed it. The guacamole is premade so because on spicy level and if your kids hate tomatoes... sometimes they can whip up a fresh batch but most of the time is it pretty made. read more

I stopped here after grabbing a few books at "the ripped bodice" down the block. It was recommended by someone who worked there. Service was great. We got there right before brunch ended and got a two for one mimosa special, which were good and i tried one with grapefruit juice that I loved. I ordered Brussel sprouts for an appetizer. The texture was perfect but I found the vinaigrette to be toooo vinegary. It made them taste kinda sour and tangy, i still at quite a bit but i need to salt and pepper to kinda off set. I also had shrimp taco which were very good. The star of the show was the beef that was in my sister's burrito bowl. Like we talked about it for days after. The service is awful and the food is just average. I got a hard time when I came in with two staff workers about a larger table - where the manager herself refused to let us sit there after being asked. The drinks were SO SLOW coming out, and the waitress gave one of my workers a really hard time for not having her ID, when she said it was in the car, and I walked several blocks to get it. On top of that, they charge almost $5.00 to use any credit card - which I do understand charging something, sometimes, but they are deflecting the whole cost of using a credit card and aren't giving back good service. I've been to Calexico several times and am never disappointed by the food. It's dependable cali-mex, and I always leave full and satisfied! I typicall get the tostada salad (which is deceptively filling!!), and this time tried the smoked queso, which was delish! My friend got an assortment of tacos (fish, shrimp, chicken), and enjoyed all of them! Their drink menu looks delicious - an assortment of margaritas and other cocktails, all reasonably priced (less that $15). While I've only been here in the daytime, I would totally come back in the evening for some margs and chips and gossip with a girlfriend!! My roommate recommended the brussel sprouts and they were quite good - make sure you get the crushed nuts in the center on every bite. I didn't notice them until we were almost done and they were game changing. My vegetable enchiladas were good - the filling was light and crunchy and made the meal delicious without feeling too heavy. My roommate loves their fish tacos (in fact, we came here specifically because she was craving them). Skip the lemonade - it was all sugar and no tart. The food was overall pretty good, but there are so many Mexican restaurants on 5th and I don't know if this particularly stood out compared to the others - similar quality and about expected price. Sadly I did not get to sit outside like I wait was too long and I was hungry had t I'll B settle for inside. Which turned not to be bad. It was a nice patio light/candlelight romantic setting. Very cool, staff was friendly and inviting. Was not too crowded. Food came out quickly. Was nice n hot. Delicious to perfection. I had virgin drinks lemonade. I wanted a lemonade and finally got one. I had the chicken, avocado and bacon burrito. Was so yummy. What made it interesting was the burrito was not like any other Mexican/ Latin burrito the bread was a Roti. Hola!!!! Shame on me for not visiting Calexico before last night. My friend has eaten here countless times and gave much bragging rights. At her suggestion, we dined at Calexico enabling me to scratch it off my bucket list---but I intend to return. When we arrived, there was somewhat of a wait--think 30 minutes--or enough time to exchange a couple catch up stories. We were 2 minutes away from happy hour ending, but were able to snag it: 2 for 1 on select drinks from 4 pm-7 pm. Margaritas in order! I chose a refreshing mango which complemented my meal nicely. Once sat, the waitress, who was really helpful and attentive as far as service, took our order. We each started with a taco--I was happy to be informed that the baja fish taco could be made grilled or fried. I chose grilled and it was very delicious! The taco served as a appetizer for us since it was small. We then moved on to our main and selected one of their bowl specials. I had my eye on the grilled shrimp which included a choice of rice (brown for me), beans (black), slaw, perfectly grilled shrimp, cheese and pico di gallo. Each table had an assortment of hot sauces and I gave my bowl a spicy kick. The combined flavors of the shrimp bowl were really good and filling. My friend was equally satisfied with her bowl, but then again, this is one of her favorite spots. Now I know why. Prices also reasonable.
