She made some solid recommendations and we took her up on them. We opted instead for a few small plates and my wife and I shared the brisket. We opened with lobster hush puppies and burnt ends. The burnt ends were terrific, well seasoned, wonderfully smoked and a fair portion size. The hush puppies lacked lobster but were still tasty and cooked made to order. From there we indulged in the chipotle smoke Mac and cheese, brisket and corn pone. The brisket was terrific and tender and well smoked, the Mac and cheese was SUPERB and definitely had a spicy little kick but the corn pone was awful. I understand that it's essentially cornbread pancakes but there was zero flavor and they were almost cold. I was looking forward to these because you don't see them on the menu many places abut they were not good. Cornbread served like this should be made to order and served hot and fresh. We finished with the banana pudding which was excellent and I think the finish the top with marshmallow fluff that they torch to give it a smoky taste. So when you head down to humble hog go at lunch and try the bologna, I bet it's amazing...and skip the corn pone.

So me and my girlfriend just had the worst experience ever at Calhoun's on the river! First off we ordered an appetizer and it came out cold! Not a big deal, me and her was thinking our waitress would come back, never did and I had to go to the hostess stand to ask if they could get her! Then the manager came by our table and had it fixed! Still are waitress still did not come by to check on us! At this point still was not going to say anymore! We get are food and not even 5 mints after the waitress brings the bill and it like just when ever your ready to pay now at this point I'm getting a little mad about it! Not even 5 or so minutes later she comes back and says are you done and starts taking things off are table trying to rush us off! We're not even half way through are food! We tell her we're not done yet! At this point we just ask for a Togo box we're so over it! She comes back yet again not 2 or 3 minuets later to see if we have a card or cash out to pay are bill and we are still eating! So we start boxing our food up she comes right back seeing if we are ready to pay! So now I'm getting really upset and still I'm not going to be mean about it! So we put the money for the bill on the table just under the edge of one of the plates and we walk to the front of the restaurant and I tell my girlfriend I would like to use the restroom before we go! The waitress comes up just stands there looking at my girlfriend like we did not pay for are bill! I come out of the restroom and me and my girlfriend start talking about how we feel like she is trying to say we did not pay our bill! We get out the door and a different manager comes running out asking us in a big crowd of people if we payed are bill! Saturday night my fiancee and I went out for a late dinner. So I chose Calhoun's. We have came hear a few times before and the food is awesome like always, but I never wanted to write a review until this night. I had the best server I have ever had in my life. My fiancee and I loved her. She was attentive to everything we wanted and she had a great sense of humor and always a smile.I have worked customer service before and I was taught to smile no matter what. Looks like the little 4 oz weighed corporate portions. The pickles were the size of nickels. Well when you have a CEO and 30 employees running around... that's what you get. I could also complain about the 10min driving maze in the parking lot to get to the place... but that really isn't their fault. The one good thing was they had coke. But they also had coke at the McDonalds I went to right after this place since the kids meal they gave me didn't bed down my appetite.... Items of Note: In their defense the manger was making his rounds and stopped to ask me what I thought. I certainly shared my points and he was more than happy to refund what I paid., and was quite insistent. I do appreciate that but I hate eating half of something and then asking for a refund. So told him it was fine. Also of note I caught them at the end of the day right before closing... though that shouldn't make a difference, when you have a lot of hour/rate employees that is just what happens. It's a local chain that I found to be above average. The Q was moist with smoke flavor throughout but not overly so. A good dose of hospitality was served. Staff was friendly and an employee came around to all the guests offering complimentary hushpuppies (a nice touch). My wife got the smash burger and it was good. The service has always been great. The restaurant was very clean and organized. I just wish the food was better.
