A leveled up Indian cuisine with a twist - that's how I would put it. Their menu is not just ordinary Indian food but they got great mix variety of dishes elevated and a bit fusion-ed. Service is great and the ambiance is pretty cool. We got eggplant lasagna, tandoori sea bass, and lamb vindaloo. All these dishes were amazing! Eggplant was simply delicious, tandoori sea bass was out of this world and, that lamb was so tender it was falling off the done. What a fantastic hole in the wall! We ordered the puri poppers to start, and for entrees, we ordered the old school tikka masala, lamb biryani, saag paneer, and butter chicken pot pie. The puri poppers were a tasty appetizer and I thought it was cool how you could drink the sauces after like a shot. The portion of the tikka masala was tiny, but the flavor made up for it. Each bite of chicken was tender and flavorful. I loved how unique yet familiar it was to other ones I've tried. The lamb biryani was a good portion for the price compared to the others. The lamb was also tender and fell off the bone. The saag paneer and butter chicken with naan were delicious. The food took a little long to come out, but worth the wait. We came here for a late lunch. The place looks really nondescript and possibly under construction from the outside. Looked really dark from the outside, and we actually weren't even sure if they were open at first. Then we stepped inside. What a difference! High ceilings! They have a bar that looks stunning! There was only one other party there at that time. They seated us at a nook at the front of the restaurant. However, because we were seated there, it made it really hard for us to get the server's attention. When the server did come by, he helped explain the menu. He knew the menu very well and did a great job of explaining their most popular items and describing the dishes. Their menu is really interesting, a great mix of traditional items and really innovative fusion with different cuisines (not just Indian-American). We ordered the pan puri appetizer. It was interesting and definitely an experience. Tasty, but I think it just wasn't for me. For the entrees, we ordered the beef short ribs, which was our server's favorite item, and the Cali Chili pot pie, which is one of their most popular items, and a couple orders of the naan. The beef short ribs were amazing! The meat was basically falling off the bone, and the curry that accompanied it delicious! The pot pie is really innovative - curry with puff pastry is brilliant, but I do wish that they cut chicken into smaller pieces, because I kept fishing out giant pieces of chicken that did not fit into bite sized pieces with the puff pastry. The biryani comes in a pot with a bread covering. We ordered steak and bass as our entrees. We ordered paneer and mushrooms as well. The raita is meant to cool the spice of the meal. Oh dear oh dear. I don't know what happened but the only thing that tasted sort of the same was the Dev Puri. Everything else that had a sauce was totally off. The truffle flavor was missing on the truffle chicken. The curry on the pot pie was not correctly balanced. The mushroom was overpoweringly Dijon-y. Three of us, the same people who went the first time agreed that the flavors were just not there tonight. I'm not sure we will be back after the disappointing experience. I was so excited when I saw that Cali Chilli was on the list of restaurants participating in DineLA's Restaurant Week from 1/24/25 - 2/7/25 and immediately made a reservation! I had high expectations from positive reviews from a fellow foodie coworker of mine. Glad to share that I had an amazing experience dining here for lunch! The ambiance is gorgeous and chic, service was excellent, and the food was SO delicious! I ordered the Cauliflower Fritters, Cali Sticky Ribs, and Butter Chicken Wings. My order came with Saffron Rice and Garlic Naan. My food was so flavorful and fragrant. Dessert was a creamy and tart panna cotta with berries. It is a great restaurant for special occasions. Outstanding service! Michelin star attention to detail and professionalism. We loved most of what we got. I believe some of the spices could have been more complex or had more of a wow factor. Also, I understand the presentation and the precision of fine dining. We just felt the portions could have been a bit bigger based on the price point. We got the Butter Chicken Pot Pie ($26), which was fun to look at, but functionally wasn't very fun to eat. Flaky pastry falling off that could be eaten separately but wasn't designed to necessarily be eaten with the chicken and sauce. The chicken could have been more savory and juicy. The Lobster Moilee ($49) was an even heftier price tag, and was just enough for 1 person and not really enough to share. I also had a Mango Passion Fruit Rose Lassi and it was delicious ($6). Appreciated the many zero proof drink options. It was my birthday, so they brought out an amazing birthday dessert that I wish I took notes on. A mix of savory and sweet ice cream with exotic spices is all I can say. Maybe some cardamom in there. Either way, I felt special. Great atmosphere, great service, a fancy experience. Just prepare to have a decent check and the portions are somewhat smaller than I expected. TIP: Call ahead and make reservations. They do get booked. We visited Cali Chili for my husband's birthday, and it was our first time there. Andy, who served us and also tended the bar, recommended the Vindaloo Lamb Shank--and it truly did fall off the bone! I had the Lamb Pot Pie, which was the best pot pie I've ever had, with a light, buttery crust and a very reasonable price compared to high-end hotels. AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking, it's a unique corner plaza-esque area, despite a block party, we didn't have any issues finding parking. Seating: Inside seating, both bar and group seating is available. Space for maybe 50 people total Vibes: You're probably more in the hidden gem spots of Long Beach. Parkview plaza has some great events. The space itself is a place for everyone but moreover lowkey highend and great place to impress others or treat yourself. They have some televisions playing different channels to keep you distracted or just enjoy the chillhop music playing in the background. FOOD: Pani Puri Flight (Recommend) This is a take on their street snack - puri (hallow fried bread), with potatoes, chickpeas and pani (spiced water). A delicious bite with a good crunch and spice. The presentation and concept is something different too. After filling the puri with the pani, drinking the remainder of the liquids was like drinking a healthy juice. Garlic & Cheese Kulcha (Recommend) Whatever you order you will need some extra bread (kulcha) to enjoy with the sauce. I had quite the decision paralysis so I thought about what flavors were included in my other dishes. The garlic had a great flavorful kick and the cream cheese was not too excessive. Vindaloo - Lamb (Recommend) You have different choices to complement this flavored curry (recommend). The vindaloo wasn't too spicy but did have a good kick and really flavored, it complemented the lamb. The lamb could be delicious by itself but the curry added great flavors to it. The meat pretty much fell right off the bone! Cali Chili Powerhouse (Recommend) Lovely, just lovely. Saffron flower, green cardamom tea with milk and decorated with almonds and pistachios. A sweet and soothing drink. If you can't do a dessert then enjoy this delight. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Manass was great! Friendly and professional TL; DR OVERALL: 5 Stars. Came on a Monday evening after running some errands. Was craving Indian and my go to was closed. I made a reservation just before popping in using Yelp and although I didn't need it the feature is nice to have. They were accommodating to my party if 3 (stroller included) and were able to make a wonderful drink for the Yelp check in offer (although different from what was listed.) We were also pleasantly surprised with Restaurant week and opted in for one of the prixe frixe menus and other items off the regular menu. The restaurant is a mix of Indian fusion cuisine which I found really neat! The masala pot pie was my fave because it was what my taste buds were after on that particular evening. We got the chai martinis and i was so impressed, it reminded me of the drinks from Toronto. Some of the best cocktails ive had are in Toronto because of the eclectic flavors they offer with their drinks. Went here for a yelp event. I was not the helper so I didn't get the special deal. Pretty empty when we got in was the highlight. They had 2 cooks, 2 servers and the owner working but it appeared to be understaffed still was the waiting game was long. Our waiter was the bartender and he kept forgetting our order. He was filling the water pitcher and not paying attention and it overflowed to the counter. He gave our food to the people next to us and they said they didn't order it so instead of passing it onto us he took it back and then walked the same items back to give to us so it didn't look suspect with the hygiene. Entree first and we asked what about the appetizer we ordered and he brought that out later. Nice guy and tried his best but if your memory is shot, it's okay to put the order in the computer or write it down somewhere. Food was like any other Indian spot. Not the best and not the worst. Our chicken was a bit dry even with all the sauce. The table next to us was clearly irritated for the order mix up and it took them 10 mins to flag someone down for the bill and of course it was wrong. We both waited patiently for our water refill and that never came so we had to flag down the server who was too busy and just gave us the carafe of water to do ourselves which I'm cool with. They have. Some type of Michelin sign at the front but no way is this any type of Michelin. Came on Thursday night at 6:30pm. Street parking for us which was hard to find so I can't imagine coming on a weekend or busy. Would I come back, no as it's too far for me and parking sucks for Indian food o can get anywhere. Is it horrible, it's not the worse but kinda mid. 2 stars but giving them 3 to support small biz owners. Biryani rice is pretty spicy. Pot pie sauce is delicious but chicken is dry. The crispy shooters is not my thing. Mango drink is good if you like sweet drinks and naan is naan. I pretty mine super thin and crispy and this on the doughy side.
