I had such a great experience at Galata Turkish Halal Restaurant & Grill! We started off with a few appetizers, and honestly, that might have been one of my favorite parts of the meal. Everything came out fresh, flavorful, and perfect for sharing. We ordered crispy potatoes, falafel and icli kofte. The service was also great from beginning to end. Everyone was welcoming, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed without making us feel rushed. That always makes such a difference when you're trying a new spot. The food was full of flavor, the portions were nice, and overall the whole experience felt warm and inviting. Definitely a great Long Beach find, especially if you're looking for good Turkish food and a place where you can order a bunch of things for the table and just enjoy. Hands down one of the best Mediterranean meals I've had in Long Beach. Everything we ordered was incredible. The lamb chops were the star of the meal--perfectly seasoned, savory, juicy, and beautifully grilled with that fresh, smoky barbecue flavor. The hummus was a 10/10: silky smooth, topped with whole chickpeas, and full of rich, authentic flavor. The rice deserves its own mention. It was light, fluffy, buttery, and perfectly cooked--not sticky at all. Paired with the fresh salad, it balanced the meal perfectly. For drinks, the sorbet drink was so refreshing, and the pomegranate tea was outstanding with bright, fruity notes that made it the perfect way to end the meal. The ambiance is absolutely beautiful. What an incredible experience. I haven't had food that woke me up like this in a long time. We ordered the icli kofte, tabbouleh, the lamb and beef kabob, and babanoush. So happy I came here with my friends for my birthday!!! I have seen this place over and over on Yelp because of the reviews, so I really wanted to try it and it didn't disappoint at all! It is very casual, a modest little restaurant on 2nd street, but it's probably the most authentic food you'll find on 2nd street as well. Everything was so incredibly flavorful and delicious. We started with the Galata mixed appetizer, so good!! It comes with A LOT! I loved all of the dips and the dolmas and babagonoush were excellent (which are always two of my favorite dishes). We got the beef and lamb doner which was to die for. Honestly. Great meat, seasoning was on point. I loved it. 10/10 We also ordered this chicken dish from a clay pot that was soooo good. I just had a couple of veggie wraps delivered, which, according to the menu, has "eggplant, falafel, babaganoush, hummus, green and red peppers, lettuce, and feta cheese". What I received were 2 wraps filled with completely unseasoned steamed vegetables. Like the kind that come in a frozen bag from the store. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and squash. Not a single ingredient from the menu was present. I feel like I've been pranked or something. The side of fries was also completely unsalted, but that's the least of my issues with this "food". We started with falafel and Ottoman Sherbet Tea, then we ordered the chicken doner plate and lamb/beef doner plate. We ended the night with pomegranate tea and a Turkish dessert (I don't remember what it was called). Everything tasted amazing but I highly recommend the falafel and ottoman tea. The most juicy and moist kebab I have ever had. The babaganoush was smokey, citrus-y, nicely spiced and an exceptional texture served with hot pita. Even the rice was fluffy, savory and memorable. After dinner, we walked nextdoor to have Turkish ice cream and Turkish coffee. It was a wonderful night. The service was FANTASTIC! The owner came over to greet us and ask us how we liked everything. Felt like family. We were well taken care of even to the point of the waiter lowering the sun screen because he could see the setting sun was starting to get in our eyes. GREAT food and such big portions. I came here on my own for lunch when I was in town for work, and the staff were so welcoming. I couldn't decide what to order (it all looked amazing) and the waiter was very helpful in guiding me in terms of flavors and spice levels. The complementary tea at the end was delicious. There were Turkish videos on TV, which were fun to watch since I was dining alone. It was also very clean with beautiful colorful lamps for ambiance. I was very nicely given 2 extra falafels with my falafel mezze plate, but there was nothing particularly remarkable about the plate - solid B. My friend got the chicken skewers, which was not to his preference when served "rotisserie" style, but the staff were nice enough to bring back another serving of chicken in the usual "kebab" style. Service was a little inattentive but friendly. A big bonus was the free sample of delicious pomegranate tea! This place has such nice Turkish decor with all its unique cool beautiful decorations and very cozy atmosphere. It's also a lot more intimate and not too noisy from the outside. The complimentary pita and oil was amazing. We got the galata salad, which was very good and refreshing. The mixture of greens, date and feta cheese was great. We got the lamb and beef doner plate. The meat was very tender and they were very descriptive with the different variety of sauces. While super tender, it was not as seasoned as well as I would have liked. The char and tenderness was there but the flavor left a bit much to be desired. The Turkish tea was great. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Along with the wonderful host (and I'm assuming owner), every moment spent at Galata Grill was an experience. I felt like I was on vacation in Turkey with the ambiance of the Turkish shops next door, the decor, the smells, and of course, the flavors! There was such an assortment of items and I loved each one. I'm a sucker for a good appetizer plate and I was not disappointed! I even made it my meal but had to get sides bc everything looked and smelled so delicious. The host and servers kept checking on our every need and gave several food recommendations. We had plans to meet friends for dinner and decided to check out someplace close to home. We decided to show them Turkish food, plus it was an opportunity to check out Galata Restaurant, which is still relatively new (less than 2 years old). We were lucky to find street parking, but parking can be tricky in Belmont Shore on 2nd St; don't forget to check some of the public parking lots behind the main buildings too. The restaurant is not that big but is very bright and beautiful inside, with Turkish lights and mural paintings on the wall. Service was phenomenal, friendly, and attentive. We were offered generous refills of the delicious hot pita bread and dipping sauce of oil with sundried tomatoes. The Turkish tea, hot pomegranate tea, and fresh lemonade were also very good. The menu is extensive and prices are quite fair given the large portion sizes. We shared an appetizer sampler, and individually ordered various soups, salads, and grilled meats. This spot was on our list for a while, so when we were meeting our friends in Naples for the boat parade, we thought this was our best opportunity! What a charming little place! We loved seeing the Turkish lamps hanging above the dining room, the loud dance music, and the busy staff. This place seems to get a lot of foot traffic from customers along 2nd street, and we're glad to see it! In terms of food, we had hoped to order a chicken shawarma plate, but it was nowhere to be found in the small menu. Instead, we tried the chicken doner wrap, and it was dry and insipid. There's not much else to say about this unremarkable dish, but the fries were decent; not that we went into a Turkish restaurant expecting to eat fries. Would we eat here again? My friend and I stumbled across this restaurant and we greatly enjoyed it! My friend and I have gone to turkey before so to find a place that gave us nostalgia about our trip was so nice! We love Turkish tea. My favorite is Apple tea- highly recommend 10 out of 10. Service was a little slow, but we did not mind it as we had a lot to catch up on. They give you some of freshly made pita bread and oil to enjoy at the beginning of your meal. We enjoy a chicken wrap which was delicious. An unassuming little gem of a restaurant with a Turkish sweets store next to it that you could easily miss if not for the mildly annoying but passionate dude in front of the small storefront promoting the place! The interior space is ornately decorated but comfortable. Our server was very professional and attentive. My daughter and I opted for the Galata special grill platter for 2, which came with a large platter of meats (lamb chops and skewers, chicken, beef, kofta) and rice, grilled tomatoes and green peppers plus a small mixed greens salad. Our server brought the most delicious sun-dried tomatoes and herbs in olive oil for the table, which we scooped up with fresh, warm pita bread. The best!! The entree platter was plentiful for 2 people and we took some home. The meats were nicely grilled and seasoned well. I loved the pickled onions on the salad, too. I could come here every day, it was so tasty. The prices were reasonable for the amount and quality of food and service . I've been very interested in checking out this place, having been to Turkey twice. The place is nicely decorated with those lovely Turkish lamps. The ambiance is pretty nice and the location on 2nd Street in Belmont Shores is nice. But why is the place always so 'quiet'. I imagine one reason is that they don't serve any alcohol: no beer, no wine, etc. which is not unusual for restaurants in Turkey given their Muslim population. I do not know if they will allow folks to bring in a bottle of wine or a can or two of beer. If so they need to let folks know this. My friend and I tried the hummus, which was very good and served with warm bread. We also received some complimentary olive oil with some spices with the bread earlier. The hummus was fresh and I appreciated the olive oil in the center. I ordered the Kofta plate and the meat was delicious. Tender and juicy. The dish comes with a small side salad - also nice and fresh with a light dressing. The rice was fine. I'm not sure why french fries also come with this dish but they were nice and HOT. My friend had the chicken skewers and said they were very good. We had intentionally left room to check out their Kunefe dessert and it was 99% there. It could have been a tad warmer but it was sweet and delicious. A nice size for two to share. So what was off? After being seated and given water, plates, silverware, etc. I had to repeatedly ask for more water, which was annoying. The place was fairly empty but our server/host seemed pre-occupied at times. Also, I had asked for hot water with the dessert opting not to get a warm, caffeinated drink. She was very nice in offering lemon with it, but I personally have a peeve that the beverage should be served BEFORE the dessert arrives. It's like getting your silverware AFTER the food comes. The place has a golden opportunity to do a little better and if they will allow wine and beer, I think they need to let folks know. Put a pleasant sign indicating that these beverages are welcome and have a cork screw and some wine glasses available. Charge $5 corkage fee. read more
