Stopped in at Calico Cafe for breakfast on our way through Illinois. Small town, quaint diner right next to the railroad tracks. The food was pretty great, we left stuffed. We had omelettes, pancakes, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, bacon, and grits. My husband and I each got a short stack of pancakes.. do not be fooled. The pancakes are short, but they're also as big as your plate! You could definitely split an order between two people and have a separate order for eggs and other such breakfast necessities. Our waitress was a wonder, she had the diner floor to herself with a relatively busy joint. We never once wanted for drink refills or coffee. Our orders were all out in a timely manner and she brought out our small babes' food first. Talk about AWESOME service, we were really impressed. I would definitely recommend to anyone passing through or in the area.

This place is so unsuspecting. I was in Sheridan visiting family and we needed a yummy place to catch some grub after a night of heavy drinking. I thought it was going to be the usual diner food, bland but gets the job done. Man was I wrong!!! So yummy! I had the biscuits and gravy skillet. It blew my mind. Seriously try it! The staff was super friendly. I will be back......very hungry... and likely hungover. See you then!

Just so others are aware, Calico Cafe is only open until 11:00 on Saturday. Not 2:00 as stated on Yelp.

Great breakfast restaurant. Consistently good food. My favorite is the Texas Skillet! Best biscuits and gravy in the area!

I used to work down the road from here when I was a young lad so I am familiar with Sheridan IL,…read moreand it's lack of restaurants. This particular trip to Sheridan was brought about becasue a friend of mine had a flat tire, so since I gave him a ride to go out and change it. He offered to buy me lunch at subway, I accepted the lunch offer however I declined on subway. I pointed down the street, and said we should see if that bar serves food, after all we can get subway anywhere. We walk in the front door into what seemed to be a old foyer, and four feet in we met a T intersection, odd needless to say but we shrugged it off. We waltzed on in,and quickly noticed the black painted bronze ceiling was falling in. All this aside we asked for menus and situated our selves at the bar away from haggard ceiling as we did not want derbies falling in to our meal. any way as we browsed through the food items some crazy old local made very unwitty wise cracks that were a desperate attempt at attention the bartender even had a hard time acknowledging him, however he continued to carry on anyway much to our dismay. I ordered a draft beer to start, & was impressed that the menu was pretty sizable for a small town bar, I had the grilled chicken sandwich my friend he had the same but with pineapple. While we were waiting for our food we played a game of pool and looked around the bar which is pretty sizable, the pool table was off balance the felt was bad the cues bent and the ones that where not bent had crappy slide over tips put on, as we walked around the ceilings plaster was falling in the carpet was dingy & stained and they used plastic outdoor beer banners to spruce up the inside. During our sloppy game of billiards the food was served the beer was fresh and tasty the buns were great the chicken however was bland no spice no nothing, not to say it was not juicy, and tender just not a lot of flavor. Now the really odd part we were supposed to pay for the food and the drinks at different places in the bar WTF we place the order at the bar, and we can pay for our drinks there but we have to navigate through a labyrinth to pay for the food! Well we said to hell with that and just threw cash at the bartender and made our way out the door. I would stop in again to maybe show some one what a true dive bar truly is, but only for a quick beer nothing else.

There were two waitresses in our area and it was clear ours was not as serious about their job as the other. We waited long enough after being seated to start to wonder id we had been forgotten. Two other tables (seated after us by the other waitress) had been seated and got drinks before our someone came to our table. When I did get my water it had plastic wrap in it. The other waitress took it from us to get a new one. No sorry, nothing. Acted like nothing happened. Our waitress delivered the new one 10 solid minutes later. It was Not super busy at this time. Why so long? And again no acknowledgement of the plastic.. couldnt get myself to drink anything else with worry of contamination of the ice box. Order the california chicken sandwich and brussel sprouts. My mother had the smash burger. She seemed to enjoy it though both sandwiches were stacked super tall and mine had two huge thick red o ions on it. A bit overpowering but mine was good after that was removed. Brussel sprouts were significantly salty. Wasnt able to get through them. My mom got the fries and tho were standard. She also got a bloody mary. It was alright she seemed to enjoy it. Waitress was a little sarcastic with us for no reason and the plastic and just overall service was unfortunate. It was enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth and I dont plan to return.
