I have been a patron of this place for over 25 yrs. I will not go back after they only gave me part of my meal through the drive-through (Yes, I trusted them to get the order right, lesson learned), then so called Mgt. wouldn't not replace the meal as I would have had to drive back across town to get the other half of what I had already paid for. Then when I asked for his name (I would say white male late 20's to early 30's) he hung up the phone. What a low-life. What do they have for Mgt there? Delicious traditional food! Love their breakfast menu & the cook really does prepare eggs just the way you request them. Six warm & delicious homemade cinnamon rolls arrive with your drinks... whether it's b'fast, lunch or dinner. Lunch specials M-F. Hamburgers are delicious... well, everything we've ever ordered is! Great service, great food... Didn't give a 5 * rating because it is dark inside with old wood floors, plank walls halfway to ceiling, etc. BUT they're closing in 2 days (March 6, 2016) to do some remodeling &, hopefully, address these issues. Ate there tonight and food was so bad, my daughter and I both agreed we won't be back. There was hair in the food and one item tasted rotten. The lady behind us had to ask the waitress to microwave there meal because it was cold. She told her daughter you have never tasted iced cold macaroni and cheese before have you. I don't know what has happened to this place or if it was just a bad night but maybe stick with breakfast if you do go. That's what I had before and it was not this gross. read more

Whenever I drive through Amarillo on my way to or from the mountains, I always try to stop at Calico County for a meal. As soon as you are seated, a complimentary basket of fresh/hot delicious cinnamon rolls and biscuits is brought to the table. They are so good that I could fill up on them alone - but don't no matter what I order, it is always delicious and the portion size is usually generous. This was our favorite restaurant for years when we used to spend a lot of time in the Amarillo area. It's been a few years since we were here last and we were happy to see they were still in business. Even better, the food was still great! The service was friendly and fast, too. We have to come to Amarillo early for medical treatments for my wife and we have been looking for a breakfast restaurant for after the treatments and noticed Calico County today. We stopped and as we were walking in noticed a homeless person's cart beside the door. As we entered we saw a homeless woman asleep on their waiting area bench. The smell was enough to gag a horse; very unappetizing. We did stay and the food was acceptable, but that smell stayed with us as we ate. Homeless people need help and a place to stay, but in the waiting area of a restaurant?? If they wanted to help her, give her a meal and a ride to a shelter would have been much better. It was semi crowded when we went in so we put our name down. Following us was about 6 different parties. After 10 minutes of waiting and all 6 families behind us being seated, we asked what was going on and, whoops, they forgot about us. So they finally seat us and we ask if we could still order breakfast since we were there 10 minutes before the breakfast service was over. The lady who sat us tells us she'll go ask. She never comes back and stands at the front doing absolutely nothing. We sit and wait for about 10 more minutes. No one comes to even ask if they can get us a drink. There were several waitresses in our area and never even told us they would be "right with us". Have eaten there before. Food isn't bad but it's nothing special. Good American fare, sort of like a Cracker Barrel in a way. Kids had nachos which they loved and was a huge plate of food that they couldn't finish. We travelled from California to Oklahoma along the I40. It was breakfast time when we passed thru Amarillo. The parking lot was full and we decided this place must serve great food. We were seated and waited and waited, then waited some more. We figured it out when we noticed 5 other customers were waited on and served before we were, we knew we were not welcome customers. I advise all minority people to eat somewhere else. Look for a restaurant that treats all their customers with good service. To top it off when the food arrived, it was cold. read more

We had the Catfish lunch special on Friday (03/16) and would rate the food 4-stars. The catfish was crunchy and cooked just right. The sides (turnip greens, fried okra, and spicy blackeyed peas) were real southern-style - lots of bacon in the greens, crunchy fried okra and jalapenos in the blackeyed peas. The rolls and cinnamon rolls were terrific -- I kept seeing other diners wrapping up their leftover rolls and when our basket came, I understood why....they are just too good to leave on the table. There was lots of food, and the luncheon discount makes it an especially good deal. I would give a total of 6-stars if I could. The food was good (4-stars), but our waitress was AWESOME! She was worth another 2 stars. I didn't see a name tag but she had a million-watt smile and made sure we had full tea glasses, pepper sauce and extra tarter sauce. We were kind of sitting in a no-man's land right at shift change and thought we were going to be overlooked - it was clear that the waitress in that section had cleared all of her tables and was clocking out just as we were seated. We did have to ask a passing server if he would get someone to wait on us so he sent the waitress from the next section. She certainly made our meal even more enjoyable! We went in at almost 2:00 and it was still pretty busy. We will definitely be sure to avoid the lunch rush, but we will go again. read more

I am not a big yelper. I figure that some businesses occasionally have an off day. In this case, I am really disappointed. We went to Calico County for breakfast because of the reviews on yelp. So, to begin, we walk in the front door and stood at the host station for about 45-60 seconds. Finally a round man hoisted himself up from one of the booths, waddled over, and said, "How many?" I thought how many what? I told him how many in our party and he escorted us to the table and told us the name of our server. It was easily 15 minutes before Methuselah showed up to take our drink order. I was scared he wouldn't come back for another 15 minutes so I made him take the food order at the same time. About 10 minutes later he strolled around and dropped off the coffee. 25 minutes at least before we were given crap coffee. Food was meh. Broken white cream gravy ON THE SIDE for biscuits and gravy. Biscuits which could pass for hard tack from 1867. Cold eggs. Salty pancakes. And not once did anyone swing by to see how we were. All this in a restaurant with 5 tables occupied. I would rather drive down the freeway throwing money out the window than suffer thru another meal at Calico County. read more

I'm from out out town on a visit, and we ate here yesterday evening. Kind of Plain Jane, but we had good service and the food was good. I had a ribeye dinner with salad, broccoli & rice, and turnip greens. The steak was just a little (not much) well done, but was still good. The Broccoli Casserole was outstanding. Probably the best I've had. Worth the trip here just for that. The Turnip Greens were very good too as they had small chunks of ham cooked in for flavor. Lots of places are not flavoring their food anymore because of the health conscious public. I'm sorry, but what a pity it is to have such bland food served, and we're paying for it too. My friend had a Philly Steak Sandwich w/wet fries (French Fries covered with Gravy), and he said they were excellent. They had wifi but I was unable to pull YouTube up.
