We loved our waitress, she was extremely kind and attentive. The restaurant itself has had a major overhaul with the interior aesthetic, but they still kept nostalgic pieces like the Tiffany glass lamps hanging over the tables! While they've changed some of the restaurant's interior, the same great service and menu awaits each guest, whether a returning customer or an Amarillo newcomer! And one step in Malcolm's gives you a sense of the 1950s/1960s Amarillo that you've read stories about! We brought our kids here when they were babies and they've grown up enjoying it! Good onion rings, OK tuna fish(mine is better), it then I ordered a side car soda( chocolate soda with coffee ice cream). Usually delicious, but this one I had to send back!! I asked how they made it: melted chocolate ice cream, added sparkling water,and added 1scoop of coffee ice cream. Who does this? It was a horrifying experience. Malcolm's was a regular choice for our family until the new ownership took over. In their attempt to modernize they have destroyed the charm of the place. Even more disappointing is the shrinking of the portion sizes and the lower quality food while they have nearly doubled their prices. Just what I love, an Old Fashioned Ice Cream shop, the kind family families go to and have been going to for years. I didn't need to eat but I had a sweet tooth so I stopped in and got myself an ice cream soda. It was a mixture of chocolate and Cherry. I've posted a couple pictures. Unfortunately, while I was trying to line it up for the nicest view, the scoop of ice cream which was hanging on the side went plop onto the plate. I still got a picture but it wasn't nearly as pretty as it should have been. The soda was reasonably priced and delicious tasting. I plan to go back and try their food sometime. 2.6.18 I went back a couple weeks ago and got another sidecar soda which was as good as the first and I got a good picture to post this time before it melted! Then I came back last night when I couldn't decide where to go for dinner and got the Tuna Fondue Sandwich which was grilled cheese with tuna salad stuffed inside and tasted really good. Perfect comfort food. I got a bowl of chicken noodle soup($3) to go with it and onion straws on the side for $0.75 extra. I saved half my dinner for lunch today so I could order a mini hot fudge sundae for $3.50 to complete my meal. It made a great meal. read more

While passing through Amarillo, I had the most delightful dessert ever at Malcolm's. I am pining over the Strawberry Sidecar Soda with Strawberry Ice Cream. I am thrilled to have found a place with traditional diner style sandwiches and old timey soda shop items. Seemed to be a family friendly, group friendly meet up. A good choice if you seek a Mom and Pop option while passing through town. I was treated to Southern hospitality, a comfy booth, and quick service. We got salad with chicken nuggets. This was the best of all the dishes. The chicken strips were Way over breaded. I was looking at a plate that you would get from Dairy Queen. As I took the breading off, the chicken was moist, unlike DQ. Haha. The ranch dressing is home made. This was a plus and I loved the fries. Pictures follow. Great little place to grab a bite! The chicken fried steak was tender and the gravy was good. My husbands bacon cheeseburger was great. The sweet tea was FANTASTIC and huge. After dinner we shared a chocolate butterscotch Sunday, and it was plenty! The prices are really good, portions are big. The staff were all friendly young ladies who appeared to be having a good time working together. Tons of old signs, photos and mementos to look at. I took my nieces to Malcom's for ice cream/sundaes. I figured it would be something fun to do with them. But I was wrong. We stood at the door for a minute. With no service just being stared at by two waitresses (one of them I know. The other one wearing ear gauges) and some more in the back. I looked at my phone. The time was 2:19 PM. I looked over on the south side of the register. I saw 3 booths opened; 2 of them not wiped down, the other one was and the waitress with the ear gauges "pretend" to wipe where she left the towel and walked to the back. Being stared at by waitresses along with the customers still with no service to the point of being uncomfortable; I finally walked up to the register and asked what I need to do to be seated. The girl at the register said "just seat yourself." We walked around the corner to the north side of the register. There were two booths opened but not wiped down. We stood by one of the booths. We waited and no one came to wipe it down for us. I finally walked out of there! I looked at my phone and the time was 2:25 PM. I ended up taking my nieces to Braum's where it's much friendlier and the atmosphere was a lot better. They were relieved from not being stared at. Being Asians standing there awkwardly and not being acknowledged but stared at I was uncomfortable. We were uncomfortable! I've been to Malcom's for the last 10 years during my lunch hour with my coworkers and have never experienced this before. YOU CAN SAY I'M NOT GOING BACK! Disclaimer: I haven't actually eaten dinner here. Just dessert and some sides. Came here one Friday night because the wife had a sweet tooth. They are open till 11pm on Fridays. We walked in and were told to sit where ever we wanted. The problem with restaurants that let you seat yourself - they don't keep track of where you sat down. You're left sitting there for awhile until a waitress walks by and asks "Has anyone helped you guys yet?" Um.. no? So after sitting there for about 5 minutes, a waitress did finally approach us. We ordered the Hot Fudge Cake ($4), which is basically a slice of fudge cake that's been split down the middle and a scoop of ice cream has been lovingly placed there. It's then topped with waaay too much whipped cream and topped with a cherry. It's all very over the top, but delicious nevertheless. My wife ordered a Mini Mundae ($3), ice cream and fudge topped with your choice of toppings and whipped cream. She ordered it with sliced almonds. When our desserts came out, she dug around and discovered that the almonds were missing. When we asked our waitress, she replied "Oh, it's probably under all that whipped cream." More searching ensued.. Nope, no almonds. We asked her again and this time she brought out a bowl of sliced almonds. She liked it better that way. She got to sprinkle each bite with almonds. She finished it off pretty quickly! We wanted to try some of the sides, so we ordered some french fries ($2) and onion straws ($4). Take my word for it, skip the onion straws. Basically it's straws of fried batter that tastes like onions. Dipping it into the provided ranch dressing, doesn't make it any better. it just makes you feel even more like a fatty. The french fries are decent, but nothing special. After we finished, we went up to the cashier to pay the bill.. Imagine my surprise when I learned that they ONLY accepted cash. Are you kidding me? "You can pay with check also," offered the cashier. Who writes a check in a restaurant?? What is this, 1965? GET A DAMN CREDIT CARD MACHINE and pay the measly fee! There are plenty of people eating here and they'd probably get even more customers if they accepted credit card! I had to run to a gas station ATM just to pay the bill! My children love this place. Years ago it was called "Swensons Ice Cream" and owned by a guy named Archer (Jim or Jeff). Today it serves up tasty treats. Being a savory type of guy, I stick with the meat and potato menu! Its one block off I40 - so close in for those traveling thru. It is possibly the best hamburger in Amarillo. Its not a gooey chewy slimy burger like Coyote Bluff. Its no frills, handsome and delicious. Highly recommended the Cheeseburger with Jalapeño. We have went to Makcolms for years. We went every Saturday or every other Saturday at the longest. You can tell it has changed hands. Now you have to wait to be seated. Really? It's a sandwich/ice cream shop. We waited for over 40 minutes for our food and it wasn't busy. I have been there when it is super busy and have never waited that long. I had half an egg salad sandwich (came with chips) and the kids chicken bits (came with fries and toast). *Love their ranch *Food comes out pretty fast *Selection of music is nice *They have cool vintage decor *You can pay from the table when you used to have to pay at the cash register only. Cons: *Service seems hit or miss *I sat down at a dirty table and nobody cleaned it off even after I was greeted. Not sure if the server who took my order left it off the ticket or if the kitchen missed it. *The people who walked in and sat down in the booth behind me got a different waitress and better service than I did. Not sure why I wasn't given the same treatment. *I had to sit up tall and look around for someone to bring my ticket. Another server saw I was looking and sent yet another server over to ask of I needed something. *Had to pay at the register and, when I did, the server who took my order was counting money and didn't even ask how my meal was, just called for another server to cash me out. Very rude. I love the food but, the past two times I ate here, I didn't experience that great of service. My mom and I ate here on Tuesday and the same woman who took my order tonight ignored me when I was still giving her my order. She wrote down part of what I said and while I was still talking, she turned to my mom, waiting for her to order, and my mom was looking at me because I was still speaking. Mom looked back at the waitress and the woman laughed and said she already got it down and was ahead of me. It was weird. Both my mom and I were thrown for a loop on that one. Sorry Service, Anyone?. We go to Malcolm's often after church on Sunday evenings. The last few times we went, they wouldn't bring us refills & acted ridiculous when we wanted to order ice cream. My sister asked for a refill at 8:45pm& the waitress said they had already cleaned the nozzles of the coke machine (they close at 9!!!) When her husband said, "we aren't paying for her drink, if we can't get refills" the waitress rolled her eyes & walked off. We asked to speak with a manager or the owner & the staff said he wasn't there, but we saw him just a few minutes later... If you plan on going close to closing time or even within the last 2 hours that they are "open" expect to be treated poorly. If you go for lunch, plan to wait. No one gets in a rush or a hurry. The food is average but when paired with the sub-par service it is a real disappointment! The ice cream is very good so I'd recommend getting dinner elsewhere & stopping by here for dessert. read more
