Calico Toy Shoppe is a prominent toy store on Winslow Way, the cute walkable main street of Bainbridge Island's downtown. We managed to hurry past it on the way to lunch, but I knew there was no way we were getting back to the ferry without going inside. Not with a two-year-old, a five-year-old, and my mother in our crew. To our kids' credit, I wanted to get them a souvenir, or at least allow their grandma to buy them something small with my supervision (she can't be trusted on her own). The store was colorful and appealing, and I couldn't deny my boys the pleasure of a quick, moderate visit. Calico was well stocked with toys and games, and my two-year-old immediately went for a giant cement mixer set that would board the ferry out over my dead body. I told the kids and my mom that they could buy one toy each, and that it would have to be something we could easily take home. There was a large selection of stuffies at the front of the shop, and I strongly encouraged them to find something in that area. Our older son obligingly picked an adorable baby turtle, but his brother refused every little stuffie I offered. Instead, he found a cheap disposable pinwheel that cost $3.99. He's been obsessed with fans for about half of his life and apparently, the pinwheel counted. My brother and sister-in-law got a couple baby toys for their babies and we went on our way, all the kids happy with their loot. We've been home for over a week and the baby turtle, now named Baby Turtle, has a place of honor in our five-year-old's bed. The pinwheel pops up in random spots in our house, sometimes waved with aggression in front of our faces. I liked Calico Toy Shoppe and would definitely shop there if I lived on Bainbridge Island. I'd recommend stopping in if you're visiting with kids. It's a great place to pick up a little souvenir. read more

This is a capital-F Fabulous toy store, not to be missed, whether you are young or old, as long as you are young at heart! From the classic toys and games of my youth, to toys that I've never seen elsewhere, to the latest trendy toys of the day... this place has it all, in droves. As others have mentioned, this is really a two-part store, with the east section comprised of toys and the left section comprised of games. Each section has its own door, and both are deep. One could spend hours, literally, checking out all the toys and games and stuffed animals and tricks and doo-dads in these places! You can play games at the tables in the rear of the game store, and the staff in both sections are friendly and knowledgeable about their merchandise. If you have a kid, or know a kid, or ARE a kid, or have to get a gift for a kid, or are simply a kid at heart, you must come to this store/s. It really is special, and fun. read more

Horrible service, overpriced toys. Would not recommend as a place to take kids, they have no restrooms that they allow customers to use so you have to drag your kids across a busy street in the rain to use a restroom as they do not let you use theirs (employees only). To me, this is inconsiderate and poor business practice for a store that purportedly caters to children. read more

As an early childhood educator, quality, intentional but fun toys are so important for me. This toy shop is just wow! I probably have more fun here than my child just because I get impressed with the stiff they carry here. Ok this place is so so cool. I felt like Tom Hanks in Big, running around FAO Schwartz. My friend and I got pulled in by a toy they were demonstrating out front. Neither of us have kids but this store turned us in to giant selfie taking kids. We had so much fun goofing off with the giant plush creatures. Everyone needs a giant stuffed avocado. If you are looking for a unique gift or want to see your kid thoroughly lose their mind, this is the place. read more

In the toy section, there were toys for all ages. Science experiments with cans, stuffed animals, plastic animal statues, and random trinkets. There were kids books too. I got a small lion animal statue for $4. In the games section, which is next door, there were a bunch of interesting games of all types. There is a new game called Man Bites Dog which is about $10 where you try and create a funny caption with cards. There are chess sets and different types of dice. There are teensy dice and 20-number dice. The staff was friendly and the place was clean. I would recommend these two merged stores to anyone. read more

What a wonderful toy store! You are greeted by a teddy bear blowing bubbles on top of the front door! Wonderful quality toys a great place to buy gifts they have complementary gift wrap! Wonderful selection of all kinds of toys, you can find just about anything for anybody here, Darling plush animals, children's books ,Lego ,educational toys , fun activities for kids, outdoor toys. This is a great store. It's really in TWO store fronts though. So if you just visit the one store front that is just toys (which seems to be the only one reviewed in the other reviews) then go with their ratings. That half is a fine, average, small town toy store, with great selection and full retail prices (my favorite there was the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, their science section and a good selection of outdoor goofy stuff for horsing around). By FAR though, what makes this place 5 stars, is the OTHER store front, which is just as big as the toy section but is ALL GAMES. They have a great selection for the 5-teenage crowd, and even some depth for more advanced gamers (Memoir '44, Munchkin, Ticket to Ride and other mainstay titles). They also have a game room where you can test out and play the games before you buy them. I think it's remarkable that you can find a store with such depth of games in such a small town. Really nice and helpful, no pressure staff as well. They have a good selection, make good suggestions and of course if you're here longer than a visit, they will order you anything you want. It's full retail, no discount, a bit more than you'd expect to pay at the game stores across the Sound in Seattle, but proximity is everything! We regularly visit/vacation on the island and always visit here to pick up a few games for vacation. Works great for my 5 and 8 year old. read more

I wrote a review a few months back after the store would not take back a game. After writing the review I was contacted by the owner who asked me to come in and she would take care of the matter. I went to the shop and conveyed I was happy to purchase other goods and did not want a refund. The issue was resolved. I am appreciate of the resolution. Love the remodel that Elisabeth did and the expansion to the game exclusive store right beside the original! The toy selection is great for all ages! You can always find something for anyone on your list, and they gift wrap! The sales associates are very knowledgeable! I am so in love with this store. Every time I walk in this place I feel like a kid. There are so many unique toys you don't normally find in the big name stores. One side has toys and the other has puzzles and games with an area in the back to sit down and play open box games. I really like this idea, you can come in with your kids and play a game. This way you know if you want to buy it. Also it gives you something to do on a rainy day that doesn't cost any money, unless of course you choose to buy the game. The staff has always been helpful and courteous. The woman at the counter even played a game with my daughter while we looked through the games. They are knowledgeable and friendly. There is occasionally a sale outside on the sidewalk that has great deals. And the outdoor activity toys are great too. In the back there is a large selection of dress up clothes and costumes for boys and girls, I mean really this place has everything. This place is great, I can browse here anytime and still find something I didn't see before. read more

I loved the toys they were great! But the price of what they had, being more than what it's worth, mixed with the fact that their staff were intolerant of kids and their bodily functions makes for an unpleasant time in their store. Not to mention that they can't assess the situation before doing something that might not be very appropriate for said situation. My family and I were there and had over $150 worth of toys in our cart. We were getting ready to leave seeing as my kid brother just pooped in his diaper, my mother was putting a hat back as I was watching my 1 year old sister and my dad was watching my brother, when an older blonde staff member stops me (while I'm supposed to be walking after my sister) and refuses to walk with me instead grabbing me to have me stop and listen! She said that we need to change my brother because he stinks and some people were complaining (that don't have bathrooms to change him in which means we'd have to leave). They insisted that we leave and held me back from watching my sister. All around I think 1 star is more than they deserve we walked out with out getting any of the items we wanted and honestly saved a lot of money buying them elsewhere. read more

If you visit this toy store please know that you are not allowed to touch any toy, or take a toy off the shelf the look at. We were informed of this by a rude lady who rushed to us to let us know with her stern tone to "be careful! we don't want to break a toy!" This was completely unacceptable and unnecessary. Great selection, but it's mostly for adults - very crowded with toys on high shelves, not a lot of room for kids to explore. Still, most toys, especially expensive ones, are bought by adults, and I was very impressed with the attention to detail. Even though there are tons of products, the owner will happily tell you about each one in a low-pressure, relaxed way. I'm a city boy and not used to small merchants, but I felt totally comfortable and happy buying stuff here. In Winslow on Bainbridge Island Traveling to a weekend out on the Olympic Peninsula. Realized that we had no gift for a child who was celebrating a birthday ... the main reason for the weekend getaway with family. Durn! Always forget something. Was going to run to RiteAid ... uptown Winslow ... try to find a not-too-plastic gift, buy wrapping paper, tape, card, scissors, etc. Fortunately, remembered Calico Cat in downtown Winslow instead. We told the gal in the store the age of the child, how much we wanted to spend, etc. We went and grabbed a latte and pastry at Bainbridge Bakers a few doors down. When we came back to Calico Cat, the gift was all wrapped too! This place is a real toy store. Lots of quality toys. A real gem. Like all places on the island, service probably depends on who is working that day. My experience there has always been great. Wonderful place to shop with children. read more

I live on the island, and try to buy locally as much as possible. Calico Cat has friendly staff, as many reviewers mentioned, they never pressure you to buy and understand when your kids run around. The place is small and packed full of toys which makes it visually overwhelming. They have a good selection, some unique items, a little bit of everything. First time visiting Bainbridge Island and stopped in this store (7/14/15) with some friends from out-of-town who had their young daughter with them. While browsing the store and waiting for my friends, I used my smartphone to take note of some of the cool and neat toys for my daughters (who were not with me). An older woman in her 60's (I'm guessing store manager) approached me and while staring at my phone, rudely asked if I "needed any help", not once but twice. She made it more than apparent she was not offering me help but telling me to buy something or leave. Advice to Calico Cat Toy Shoppe: If your business is selling items to the public, then treat the customers as guests instead of annoyances. I was debating on purchasing a toy until the older woman lost my business and as a result, I'm now writing this post for all your "future" customers. read more

This is an excellent toy store and one of our favorite places to shop for family and nieces and nephews! Great toy selection and excellent prices and service!! Honestly, we love it! HOWEVER Your new employee smells AWFUL. I'm not one to judge but I went in with my children and immediately had to exit because her funk was causing my kids to start to say things and I wanted to save her from a public embarrassment. I'm not sure if it's medical or poor hygiene but I felt obliged to speak up after another friend at playgroup said the same thing!! Please just let her know that while she's sweet and kind, deodorant exists and it's not expensive. I'm giving you 5 stars because I don't want to damage the reputation of the store but this needs to be known. read more

The store had a large amount of toys and items of the sort available, and some of the novice staff seemed friendly and welcoming. Additionally, a variety of board games was available in the back to play for free, similarly to other stores such as Uncle's Games. While I had waited in line, the cashier seemed nice and welcoming; she welcomed the customer, asked whether or not they had needed a bag, sent them on their way, etc. However, when I had gone up to pay, she had done nothing; she didn't even care to echo my greetings, simply scanning the item and stating the price. I had to ask her to give me a bag, and she didn't care to give me a receipt for my purchase (completely unlike the previous customer). Overall, the store itself is nice, but the cashiers are unfairly terrible and unfriendly to customers. read more

Love, love, love this place! My daughter and I stopped by today, and the owner is so friendly...very customer oriented. We were browsing some of the card games,and the owner informed us she had a pack open, and then invited us to play a quick round with her. So fun! We were the only ones in the store, so we played two rounds (with my daughter winning both times!). Needless to say, we bought the game, and will definitely be returning here! read more

We popped in here while visiting the island and ended up grabbing a puzzle to tinker with - there's a huge selection of toys and oddities, plus an area in the back where you can hang out and play games too. Friendly staff and service. Prices are definitely MSRP and thus isn't as cheap as getting online, but hey, it's good to support smaller shops too! read more

My sons are still going on about their last haul from Calico Cat. The staff always have great suggestions and the selection is great for all ages. They are our Playmobil supplier and our tiny trinket go to place. I noticed a couple of comments on price, I haven't found that their prices on specific items are any more than any other outlet for the same pieces, but they don't carry cheap toys, which my sons would destroy anyway. I love knowing that whatever I get from them is going to last. Oh, and I almost forgot, in their puzzle/game store they even have made a spot for the older kids to play cards/chess/magic and so forth so they really cater to all ages and likes. read more
