When my 7 year old son says he likes the pizza crust then I know the pizza is good. Calico is his favorite pizza place now. He had the pepperoni and we had a meat combo. I thought my wife ordered double on the meat and was surprised to hear that it was regular. Owner was real nice and accommodating. They also sell Funko Pops and when we saw Mechagodzilla we had to get it. This will be a regular stop of ours. read more

Ordered the large surprise pizza via calling in to pick up. There are not that many places to eat in Borrego Springs so this is a hidden gem that won't break your wallet. We were out hiking and this hit the spot. We also got a date shake (not pictured) and the people working there put it in the freezer for us to make sure it kept cold. Super nice of them! I thought the brownie was fudge but I think i read the label wrong the brownie was fine and the chocolate chips was a nice touch. read more

Service was poor, The guy behind the counter seems to be high, did not seem to keep good hygiene and was talking all over the place. Taking customers orders telling them that they have come in too late (30 minutes before closing). After attempting to order multiple items they claimed to have they instead were "not making them today" along with that they're soda machine was not working, I ordered a sourdough avocado and cheese sandwich and after 20 minutes it came out on cold white sliced bread, two small slices of tomato, and a half an avacado for $15. Just another tourist money grab out here in the desert where it's not about making quality food but instead taking advantage of the people and families visiting. read more

Let me say, the ride out to Borrego is amazing, but when you get into town you'll find a small plaza. Inside is THEE best lil pizza place in all of East San Diego County. Calicos! Had the best x lg.cheese double pepperoni and mushroom pizza I've had in a long time! Toppings were plentiful, doesn't skimp on the cheese, crust was hearty, had a wonderful texture and taste. The owners are some of the nicest ppl you'd ever meet, service is friendly. Prices are a lil high, but for the quality it's worth it. They have a nice a few little tables outside. More so a take out place. But there is a beautiful park right behind them with picnic tables and it's always a nice day in Borrego. Highly suggest this place is worth the stop. Only down fall is the hours have been somewhat inconsistent. Would be great if they were opened 4-9 Sunday thru Thursday and Fridays and Saturdays from 11-9. As the hours of operation are very unusual for a pizziera. Right now it needs head lead to get things together. That's the only con, the operation. Its taken me quite sometime to try this place as it was difficult to actually get it on a day there were open. Bottom line: food, service, ppl are 10+ Great place. read more

It's a small shop but they have a large variety of foods and drinks here. We tried their pizza (sausage, pepperoni, and onion) and it was very, very good. Lots of toppings, good buttery crust, good flavor all around. I would say, just a tad more sauce would have put it over the top. We also tried some of their cookies which looked and tasted very homemade. There are very few restaurants in Borrego so it's nice to find ones that stand out. I would definitely return. read more

Revisited 10/27/2021 After reopening with new owners I had to check it out. I've always enjoyed the pizza here and wanted to see if it was still good. Martha, Mario and their son are the new owners and have fixed the place up really nice. Fresh paint a wonderful fresh new menu and a very nice patio setting out front for seating. Sadly the prices have gone up from what they used to be but that's to be expected after COVID-19. Service was excellent very friendly very helpful. They still have some bugs to work out I'm sure the place will improve with them doing a great job. I ordered their supreme pizza. Definitely a bit pricey at $24.00 for a large 14in pizza. The ingredients were fresh and delicious and overall the pizza had a fantastic flavor. Unfortunately on this day the pizza dough was a bit tough that is the reason I had to give them only 3 stars. But as I said the pizza was delicious and I will definitely come try them again and hopefully the pizza dough won't be quite so chewy So that I can upgrade them to four stars instead of three. As they work out the bugs from just re-opening with new owners I expect this place will improve to 4 or 5 stars. Can't wait to try their meat eaters Pizza next round. read more

We found ourselves in Borrego Springs once again a year later! We ordered the same Large Supreme Pizza. We were not disappointed. This was enough to feed the four of us. We had to wait maybe 20 minutes, but it was worth it! A large group with many small children came in after us, the restaurant put on a cartoon on Netflix for them. The people who work there are so nice. I hope to be back again in a year or so! read more

I've always liked Calico-clean and comfortable. Some recent changes are worth noting, however. Expresso has been added back in to the menu and every food item is served with appreciation. I was thanked for my order, warned that it might take awhile because they were (thankfully) busy and thanked for my patience when my sandwich was brought to my table. We were on vacation in Borrego Springs. We loomed up places to eat prior to our departure from home. We were looking forward to eating here! However, this place was closed from Friday until today (Sunday). We called numerous times and the phone calls were forwarded to his personal voice-mail. We drove over and it looked like someone was in there, but it was closed as well. There was no sign on the store saying "Closed for Labor Day Weekend". The voice-mail didn't say it was closed for Labor Day. This place kind of ruined it for the kids as they really wanted pizza. Anyhow, with as little bit of customers this place gets you'd think they'd be more communicative with the community and future customers. read more

We stopped by on a Wednesday at 3:10 pm. There were people sitting and eating in the window and the door showed hours 7am to 7pm. We tried to open the door and it was locked. A man kindly opened the door and said they close from 230 to 4pm. So go before 2 or after 4 and disregard the hours posted on the door. read more

I stopped in to Calico's to see the new store interio. It was really well done. The signs are very professional and inviting, the menu was larger than previous owner. Borrego Springs is a sleepy town during their off season and there's not a lot of options to choose from for a morning coffee. We came into Calico's and we were very disappointed in the service and coffee. We walked in with our group of 7 to absolute silence. We thought the place might have been closed because there was no one there to greet us. After about 30 seconds of slowly wandering in, we finally spotted an older lady busy in the kitchen. She did not greet us. I went up to the counter to ask for an iced latte and as soon as I ordered, she turned around and started making it. Never mind that we had 6 other people with us who might have wanted something. She came back with my drink (in a weird, cheap paper cup) and then my husband asked for a hot latte. She seemed bothered by his order. There was no smile, no pleasantries, nothing. She just made our drinks and took our money. The lattes were just mediocre, but my expectations were low and I needed some caffeine, so it was fine by me. We left the place to drink our beverages because the vibe in the shop was so awkward. Even my kids asked what was wrong with the place. Later as we were driving through town, a little tiny car drove through an intersection right in front of us without looking. It was the same lady driving a Calico's delivery car! We all laughed about how ridiculous our experience was at Calico's. Avoid this place if you can. read more

We arrived for lunch about 5 min prior to afternoon closing. We chose from salad and sandwich menu. The Cobb salad I was served so the very best I ever had. The produce was so fresh, avocado, perfect, bacon & blue cheese very tasty. For such a small town, I never expected such high quality food! Definitely will go back when in the area. read more
