Located on the corner of Highway 86 and S Marina Drive, this travel plaza seems to provide everything that a traveler might need -- fuel and diesel Chevron), tons of food choices and ample dining tables (Pizza Hut, Subway, Cinnabon, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Yogurtland, Jack in the Box, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Imperial County, and Salton 350 Bar), clean restrooms, a general store with travel necessities, and more. What was particularly interesting about this travel stop was seeing the local culture of the large number of ATVers. Virtually every second truck had an off-highway vehicle (OHV) in its bed or on its trailer. Not being local, we're not sure where they were going to ride, but we speculated that a significant number were headed to the Imperial Sand Dunes. These dunes, in southeastern California, stretch over 40 miles long and average 5 miles wide, and are a popular recreation site. While the travel plaza was easy to access, and had everything that you might need, we've rated it as a 4 rather than 5 because of the chaos of the plaza. All of the gas bays were occupied, with all sorts of vehicles vying for a place -- from motorcycles to OHVs to cars to tanker trucks to 18-wheeler. We chose to park "next door" because of the chaos in front of the travel plaza. It also made it easier to re-enter the highway.

Its a quick stop if you in dire need of gas as the gas prices are quite high but if you are on fumes it's a blessing. The Mini Mart isn't stocked very well so don't count on much other than a bag of chips and a soda or two. The staff is friendly so that's a plus. I give this place a fair 2 1/2 Stars. Enjoy.

I went in to grab an energy drink and a sandwich (which, by the way, they have a surprisingly great selection of both), and ended up witnessing what can only be described as pure chaos. There was an older gentleman ahead of me having trouble with his credit card, and the clerk seemed a little unsure of how to handle it. While I was waiting in the quickly growing line of people, a group pulled up in a Jaguar yelling, and suddenly a heavy-set woman waked from the car in the store and started rushing around and yelling "RAT"--next thing you know, she's knocking things off shelves, pushing through people, yelling "KILL IT!" while everyone else is trying to figure out what's going on. Meanwhile, some man from that same car is yelling about a "Habibi" across the room to what looked like the manager or owner. And keep in mind--the store is pretty small, so this all felt even more crazy. On a practical note: I wouldn't recommend trying to squeeze a large RV in here, although it is possible if you use the outer pumps near the road. Also, expect lines for gas, especially during busy tourist times--it's a popular stop for a reason. Overall, it's a great place with everything you need, plus a little unexpected entertainment. Definitely worth the stop--just be ready for anything!
