A very friendly family restaurant in a town where you get the impression that these things may be hard to come by. I can't slam the place, because the service is fabulous, and the food was pretty decent, if bland. Props for red bliss potato salad, made with sour cream and scallions intsead of mayo. Props for the fact that they actually make an attempt to have a few vegetarian options on their menu, including a choice of two types of (pre-made) veggie burgers, one of which is soy free. We stopped at Calico's on Memorial Day for a late breakfast, since the Roadrunner (which had better reviews) was closed for the weekend and we wanted to try somewhere we hadn't been before. It didn't look enormously promising when we walked in, but the food was surprisingly good and our server was friendly and attentive. The three of us ordered an Arizona Scramble (excellent!), cheese blintzes with strawberries, an order of biscuits and gravy and a short stack. All of the portions were absolutely enormous ... we could've done with half the food, to be honest, but we ate it anyways ... and the Scramble included a huge order of hash browns and toast (the hash browns took me by surprise since I didn't remember them being listed on the menu). The short stack definitely made up in width what it lacked in height ... those were some colossal-sized pancakes. I'm pretty finicky about my biscuits and gravy, but these were quite good -- the gravy was a good consistency and interesting-tasting without being overspiced, and the biscuit was fluffy and not too salty. Coffee was decent and refilled promptly, as were our waters. Bathrooms were clean and the lobby has a small selection of souvenirs for sale. As diners go, this is a good place to stop (and right off the freeway, better yet). read more

Flat TRASH! Came in for a bite to eat at 8:15 Pm while driving to Phoenix. Was seated promptly. Several other tables were being served but definitely not busy considering the number of employees. Our drink order was taken, not delivered, and after 20 minutes of flat being IGNORED by at least 4 wait staff, we walked out. Lovely service, and I was happy and relieved when I asked to see the ingredients for the salad dressing to make sure there were no allergens in it and they brought out the bottle with no issues. My chicken salad tasted fresh and the chicken itself was fairly tender for a small town restaurant. We enjoyed this restaurant so much we stopped here on the way back as well and so now this is our second visit. The salad bar is small but solid and my family enjoyed the sandwiches. My family dined here for a meal and will not be going back. It was quasi-dark inside, semi-clean and in general lacked a sense of freshness. Our food arrived cold, and the baked potato was not baked in the middle. The waitress had a less than friendly attitude. Coffee was old. The salad bar did have nice soup and semi fresh vegetables offered. It was expensive for bad food and lackluster service with each meal being about $17 per plate. 6 of us were dining that evening and 6 of us agree that it was disappointing. Eggs/Bacon/Hashbrown/Toast: Simple American breakfast, it's difficult to mess up but oh so good. I would highly recommend a simple breakfast here. Pancakes: I am actually quite surprised. I personally don't like pancakes at diners as it's difficult to get right, but the pancakes here were quite good. Normally most pancakes I try at diners are a bit on the heavy side but despite their size the pancakes were airy and light. It went very well with a little butter and syrup. -= Atmosphere: 4.5/5.0 =- This is a quaint little diner off route 66 with all that you would expect of a diner off route 66. We even saw a tire shop that looked just a like luigi's from pixar's cars nearby, literally right out of something from a different time. -= Service: 4.5/5.0 =- Service was very good, I never needed to ask to refill my water and the server was very nice about me asking her questions about the food. -= Price: 5.0/5.0 =- Good Price, I am from Los Angeles, and if I were to stop by a diner most places would charge $10+ for a plate of food. I do enjoy this restaurant because of its spacious, comfortable, and down-to-earth atmosphere. I've always been greeted and waited upon in a speedy manner by friendly, although a little harried, servers. The place is usually busy, which is always a good sign for a restaurant. Each table has a quirky book perched in between the catsup and mustard bottles that you can peruse and purchase a new copy in the lobby. The salad bar is great - and I always fill up on the wonderful soups. The only issue with the salad bar is the small plates and no bowls for soup - just cup size. The food order is always generous and tasty. Unfortunately, I have tried their desserts, and now I ALWAYS have to get the pie, (usually the French silk), to go. Drat! I say - because that little addition, along with the salad bar and meal, pushes the price for two to almost $30. But it's worth the money once a month. read more

kingman is certainly not a dinning capital so I was happen to find Calico's when passing through to Flagstaff. this restaurant was clean with a good choice of menu options. I ordered a turkey sandwich on sourdough bread with avocado slices, bacon and lettuce which was very tasty. My wife ordered chicken salad sandwich which she enjoyed. This is a town with mostly fast food which we sustain so it was a pleasant surprise. read more

I was driving back from Vegas. I got stuck in a snow storm and literally almost died. So I pulled into the Motel 6. When I woke up I saw this restaurant across the way in the parking lot. So I yelped it and called in a order. I ordered bacon, cheese eggs, hash browns and wheat toast. The cost was $8.00 everything was fabulous but I just want to shout out to cheese eggs. They were so cheesy and delicious. They were fast and the food was plentiful. read more

My mom and I stopped here for a bite to eat during a road trip from California to New Mexico. We ordered a BLT and a grilled cheese (each of us had half of each sandwich), and we both got the salad bar. Ok, so things from good to bad. Good: the BLT. Hard to screw that up. Not very good: the grilled cheese. Also hard to screw up, so I was even more amazed that it didn't taste nice. And finally, bad: the salad bar. I'm not even sure if it was fresh at the beginning of the day, but by the time we got there things were decidedly stale. There are not many interesting places to eat in Kingman outside of chains. This place looks like a country kitchen from the 70s with a salad bar to match. However the 17 dollar prime rib special was really good despite the cold soggy sweet potato fries. The prime rib was seasoned perfectly and was so tender. Best meal I had in Kingman. read more

Calico's is my favorite restaurant to visit when I'm in Kingman. Their food is always delicious, fresh, and top quality and the staff is always friendly. They make you feel so welcome the minute you walk in the door. Today we tried their lunch special. It was a delicious smoked brisket sandwich with grilled onions, swiss cheese, and a horsey mayo sauce on grilled sourdough. The horsey mayo was a great touch and really added an extra punch to the sandwich. If you are on Kingman, you don't want to miss checking out this local's spot. read more

Went in on a Tuesday night and there were still a few tables occupied. We ordered and the salad came, drowning in dressing, (thank goodness it wasn't for me). We received our food, I had ordered a chili size (I had gotten one before and it had been incredible), but this time, unfortunately, it was underwhelming and subpar. I had also requested that the fries be put on a separate plate but there they were on the same plate. (Sigh) My sister had ordered a French Dip and my nephew, the Chopped Beef Dinner. He had been brought the A-1 sauce, but there was a teaspoonful. We waited until he was almost done with the rest of the meal before she came back by and when steak sauce was requested, he was told that she would look because they were out of steak sauce in the restaurant but she found one last bottle with a tiny bit left. When we were halfway through, the server brought the ticket and stated that they were now closed but we didn't have to rush, but did we need boxes for the rest of our food? I felt like we were given the bum rush like "Here's your hat and the door, what's your hurry". Will NOT BE going back there again anytime soon or will be recommending that place anytime soon. As an aside, we tried to go to the restaurant a few days before, (I work until 7-730pm), and when we arrived about 7:50pm, they had already closed, even though they are posted open until 8:30pm. Their lunches offer buffet selections on certain days too. On this visit, they had a Sandwich bar. Make your own coldcut sandwich with soup and salad bar included.
