I spotted this restaurant while passing by on the way to the interstate. It was Friday around 6pm and they were not busy at all. As I walked in, the music definitely puts you in a mood! I absolutely "cha-cha'd" to the counter...LOL Some of the employees do not speak good English... a young lady came from the back to assist me. I ordered the shrimp tacos (grilled). These were cooked to order. You get 5 free toppings and after that, they charge you. I got yellow rice, black beans, red cabbage, shredded cheese, and pico. I asked if I could have the taco sauce on the side. Didn't realize that (taco sauce) is "considered" a topping, so I was charged extra. I asked for a side of guac.... didn't realize it is $4.25 - I posted the 'size' of the guacamole in my pictures. ( I'm never doing that again.) I asked after buying how was the guac, the lady didn't lie, she said that she really didn't like their guac ‍ - I should've asked prior to paying. All in all, I got 3 grilled shrimp tacos with a side of guacamole for $20. I'll try something different next time. read more

A local casual Mexican quick-service restaurant located in a strip mall in Burlington. I wanted my meal to-go. You can order online through their website, but I ordered at the counter. I got a California Burrito (no sour cream). The burrito is massive, but the best part are the fries rolled into it. Chips & salsa were included in the entrée. Needed a quick lunch in the area, so decided to stop in here because it has some great reviews. Inside is decorated well and the tunes playing were pretty good, just a small line for a late lunch so I was helped pretty quickly. Being my first time I asked for some help building my bowl, and they gave me the run down of what was included vs extra and all that. I ended up going with just a veggie bowl, which, I wish I had gone a different route. At the time I was trying to make a conscious effort to eat less meat, and figured this would be a place where I could load up on a southwestern style salad. Without the meat, and just using the toppings available (plus what I would consider a stingy helping of grilled veggies for someone ordering a vegetarian item) it just wasn't that thrilling. I visited California Burrito in the middle of the work week. This visit was based on the recommendation from a coworker who had heard great things but hadn't had the opportunity to go. When I arrived around 1:35pm, I was expecting a small crowd but there were no customers. I do believe this is because of the location. There isn't much seating but they do have some outside seating as well. As I walked in, I was greeted immediately. The decor was bright but fun. I asked about their popular item which was the Burrito bowl. I ordered that with pastor as a protein. I usually get chorizo or ground beef but stepped out on a limb and I'm so glad I did. The pastor had so much flavor and really elevated the bowl. And the amount of food was unbelievable! I wasn't able to eat it all so I shared with a friend. The price was affordable. This place is hidden but worth a try especially if you need to get in and out for lunch. read more

They put Queso instead of vegetables and up charged me for small 3oz ladles worth for a $1.29. Didn't fight it and of course the machine asks if you wanna tip for I don't know what, I guess for just making my order and giving it to me. Salsa with chips was some of the best I ever had. The pineapple salsa was good and would have been better with more of it. Received a dusting of shredded cheese and lettuce. The Birria portion was good as was the beans and rice. Second time here and loved it both times. Casual spot with plenty of parking in a shopping center. This is a lot like Chipotle. Fresh ingredients, pick your type of food (tacos, bowl, burrito, etc), pick your protein; there are about 8 of them, including birria. I asked for extra cilantro and they accommodated! I've been meaning to stop by "California Burrito" for quite a while now and finally had the chance to on Sunday evening. The traffic was consistent from the time I got there to the time I finished eating. I originally wanted to try to California burrito but want to have a big dinner so I opt for the Carne Asada fries. The fries were instantly deep fried, topped with ingredients, and the steak was chopped right in front of me. I was quite impressed -- loved the process. The flavors were fantastic. The steak was moist and super flavorful. The meal also came with a side of chips and salsa, which surprised me! It was delicious, I could've just eaten that and been happy with my meal. Overall, good customer service and the folks there are kind. I look forward to trying other items on the menu in the near future. read more

Let's start off. This place is clean, well lit and has ample seating. The line is your typical chipotle, subway setup. You order and keep the line moving adding to your choice. I went with the California burrito. Steak, cheese, loco de gallo, coke cream lettuce and guacamole. And FRENCH FRIES. The taste was outstanding. The fries are cooked fresh right in front of you. And the steak is cooked fresh as well. The preparer uses his hands to get your burrito set up. Don't worry, he had on gloves and changed his gloves after every meal he prepared. Tried this spot for the first time yesterday with my boyfriend and really enjoyed the food! It's a small hole in the wall place with a straight forward menu and friendly staff. They were patient while we decided what to order and described the different toppings for us as well. My boyfriend got a birria burrito and I got the three tacos with chicken, steak and birria. The meat was flavored really well, tender and juicy. There was a good amount of protein and toppings placed on each one and I didn't feel the need to ask "for a little more" like I do at some of the bigger chain Mexican restaurants. Our meals came with chips and salsa which was a nice surprise! The salsa had a nice mild taste and the chips were thick and crispy. We went around 815 only a few minutes before they closed at 9 and I still felt like the food was fresh for us. They also cut the meat up for you as they prepare your order which makes the experience even better! Pricing here was very reasonable and I was happy to finally find good birria in the area! California Burritos is tucked away in a small strip mall behind Biggby Coffee on University Drive, making it a convenient location if you happen to be shopping at one of the many stores in the area. The restaurant itself is small but lively, with eye-catching tile floors and upbeat music playing overhead (not too loudly). There are five or six tables inside, and another three or four outdoors. Due to limited space, this isn't the place to bring a large group, but it's great if you're grabbing lunch or dinner with just one or two others or if you are looking to do takeout. The menu setup is very similar to most fast-casual burrito establishments, such as Chipotle and Moe's. I noticed a couple things that set California Burritos apart from the competition: the quality and flavoring of the meat is superior to both of the aforementioned places, and there are more extensive menu options such as fish tacos and carne asada fries. There are, of course, many of the same familiar items to choose from as well, such as burritos, quesadillas, soft tacos, nachos, and burrito bowls. They have at least three types of salsa to chose from, in addition to three types of pico de gallo (including a pineapple version which I think I'll try next time). For this visit, I decided to stick with a classic steak burrito with cilantro lime rice and black beans and a side of queso and chips. The burrito was massive and I was pleased with the fact that I could really taste the seasoning of the tender meat. The cilantro lime rice was a bit bland, but they have yellow rice that may be a better fit for me next time. I really liked the freshness of the pico, cilantro, and tomatillo salsa as complements to the rice, beans, and meat. The queso was deliciously creamy, and although I wish it had some spice to it, I can see it being a good option for little ones or those who prefer their food mild. The salsa that is served with the chips, on the other hand, has a kick to it. The chips themselves aren't anything to get excited over, but that's okay. Service was very friendly and the line moved quickly. Prices are fairly reasonable - around $8-9 for a large burrito and chips.
