I had another great experience working with Alan Shelley at California Credit Union. Alan took the initiative to let me know that I was eligible to refinance my home at a lower rate. This was greatly appreciated because I do not keep my eye on the mortgage rate market since I am terrible at financial planning. Alan saved me over $200+ each month on my mortgage payments and all the closing costs were covered by the credit union. An incredible deal. Alan made the process seamless for me and explained all the technical details. Whenever I had a question about the technical jargon, Alan would break it down for me in layman's terms. I am a big believer in nonprofit banking, so it felt really great to not only refinance with a credit union but to also know that my mortgage remains with the credit union for the remainder of its term. read more

I had a very disappointing experience over the phone with Sandra Middleswart from the Glendale branch while applying for a loan. When I tried to explain my income, which includes SSI disability benefits and IHSS paystubs, she repeatedly interrupted me and spoke in a disrespectful tone. She even said she didn't know what SSI was. I understand that future hours cannot be counted, but I was only trying to explain my actual verified income and offer my documents. Instead of helping me or giving clear guidance, she blamed me for listing my full income and left me feeling talked down to. Her attitude was unprofessional and dismissive, especially considering that I was only asking for fair consideration of disability and caregiving income. I hope management reviews this situation carefully and ensures applicants are treated with respect, whether in person or over the phone. read more

Terrible experience--do not bank here, especially at the Van Nuys branch. After three years as a customer, my personal account was suddenly shut down without warning. They claimed "suspicious business activity" but gave no details, no phone call, no email--just locked me out. Michelle Wagemaker-Dawdy, the VP and branch manager, was rude, dismissive, and completely unhelpful. When I asked for support or someone else to speak with, she repeated, "There's no one you can speak with," and offered no solutions--only account closure. Because of this, a credit card payment I made was reversed. Despite paying three business days early, the bank held the funds, causing late fees and nearly $700 to go missing. I've received zero communication or resolution. Avoid this credit union at all costs. If you value transparency and professionalism, take your business to a real bank--like Chase. read more

Do not waste your time with this lender. We gave them so much info online and over the phone, including verification of over $4m in RE assets, and they still wanted me to send in more proof - just for a $20k vehicle loan! What? Completely absurd when you have a nearly 800 credit score, numerous credit lines with major lenders, and verifiable assets that go back many years. WORST CREDIT UNION EXPERIENCES EVER! I have worked with several credit unions for multiple businesses and personal finances. This credit union is worse than any big bank and this branch (in conjunction with their phone centers) is their primary sentinel! Among issues: 1) Pre-approval of my auto loan until sitting in front of the auto-dealer at the time of purchase. Then after 60 minutes on hold due to "unusually high call volume" (typical wait time is 30-90 minutes), a representative informs us that the loan preapproval will not be honored due to a verification issue with a completely separate signature loan that was still processing. I managed to contact my OTHER credit union and they put through both the auto-loan and signature loan immediately. A slightly higher interest rate, yes, but at least no shenanigans or falsehoods. 2) Reversal of a mobile deposit as they felt the "image looked funny." This took me 3 days and taking the original check into the branch (with its issuer) to show them it was "real." By this time, the urgency of the mobile deposit was completely moot and again I had to perform financial gymnastics to get everything paid and covered in the interim. 3) THE LAST STRAW: The credit union experienced some sort of issue with their Zelle wherein all payments on the first of the month (a Friday) were withdrawn from the account, but declined and never sent to the recipients. After 90 minutes on the phone and two management escalations (leaving me on hold for a minimum 20 min. each transfer), I was finally able to get a provisional credit so that (for my safety and security) as a single woman, I could drive to a bank branch, withdraw the cash in large bills, and move about Los Angeles, paying in person. The CU REFUSED to issue any documentation or evidence of the bank's Zelle issue, rendering me to spend more of my unpaid time talking with bill partners to try and explain the situation and avoid late fees. I was advised by the CU NOT to use any kind of online payments for 3-5 business days, so I transferred my mortgage payment another way. The CU then tried to withdraw my mortgage payment and summarily suspended ALL of my online payment processes when they couldn't access the account. I just spent another 90 min. on the phone getting back access to my Zelle and online payment system. After almost 15 years of my loyal membership, including both business and personal accounts, I'm gone. read more

I've been with CCU for well over a decade and it was great but over the past year it has become impossible to deal with. NIGHTMARE since North Island merger. Customer service calls are a minimum of a 30 minute wait now. They sat on an escrow refund check for more than 6 weeks now and it's still not resolved. I've called 4 different managers. After downloading forms and sending a pile of documents and the physical check (because I am not near a branch) they completely mishandled it and I finally told them to send the check back to me. STILL WAITING. It was promised last Tuesday. Customer service phone call showed that it was supposedly mailed on Tuesday. It's Friday, no check. To follow up AGAIN will mean another hour of my time on hold and being transferred over and over. THEY NO LONGER CARE, which means the employees are also not happy. read more

My father has been a member of CCU for almost 10 years and has always made his payments on time with a perfect history. Unfortunately, due to a bank error, he ended up getting a late payment that was reported to his credit bureau. This made a huge impact on his credit score. We have made every attempt to fix this error but all our attempts have failed. Very dissatisfied and disappointed. I would not do any further banking with this bank and will take our loyalty and business elsewhere. read more

I absolutely hate this credit union. This is why ... my grandmother died a few months ago. My mom was her caretaker and they both paid the mortgage on my grandmothers home . My grandmother's Ssi check was getting directly deposited into my a joint account with her, my mom and me. I was only on the account due to my mom suffering several heart attacks and at times not able to get out of bed to pay my grandmothers bills. All in all, my grandmother died and the credit union took close to6k out of my personal account without my knowledge to cover funds that they returned to Ssi . Mind you, Ssi didn't even request the funds back due to my grandmother still being alive . I hate this credit union. Now I'm out of 5800 dollars and no one has answers for me besides it's their policy . Ssi is willing to send the money back but of course only to her children due to her being deceased . Which means her 4 children will get the money (my money ) and I get nothing . Thanks a lot credit union . I've been a mever with them for close to 25 years and a dedicated member . They've done nothing but made me have more stress during a time when I'm still grieving the loss of my grandmother. read more

HORRIBLE!!!!! Do not join this credit union. I joined California Credit Union 23 years ago. My father was a teacher and he showed me how to get an account. I loved the credit union THEN. since the merger a couple years ago, it is HORRIBLE. Out of nowhere, a month ago, my direct deposits stopped arriving in my account a day early. the representatives I spoke with about this were extremely unhelpful and did nothing to assist me in correcting this, nor did they provide me with the reasoning it changed our of nowhere. I have a credit card with them as well. I have never received the rewards that my statement says I received. The rewards have been deposited into another account that I do not know of. I repeatedly have gotten transferred to different departments with no resolution. read more

Horrible service is an understatement. I have an auto loan through them and from the very beginning it was clear the representative could care less about getting anything done in a timely matter. Making payments is a constant frustration. You can't make a payment online unless you have an account with them which I will NEVER due based on the service I've received thus far. Calling in my payment is just as frustrating and EVERY representative I've spoken to has been rude. My Mother recently had her vehicle totaled due to a hit and run, she was devastated since her car was paid off. We were notified of the total on Thursday, walked into CCU on Friday morning and met with Vartena Panoyan and she was approved in less than 20 minutes. Parking, however, had been an issue recently due to rude drivers taking up the spots dedicated to CCU patrons. Another great review for the CCU! We shopped around for a mortgage lender and CCU was by far the best option . Alan was amazing as well as the tellers that I came across while wiring money and doing other mortgage stuff. Yanet was always helpful and even helped me get some of the info I needed together . It's great that everyone her takes customer service seriously . The transparency is great and you know exactly what you're signing up for. The rates beat other rates out there . I recommend the CCU for all banking/ loan needs. I also recommend walking into the branch as the people in the beach are much more customer centric than the reps over the phone. read more

The CCU is a joke. They want you to save them money by going paperless. They only have 2 years of statements on line, if you need more, they charge you $2.00 per statement. That is $24 dollars for a years worth of statements. Remember, IRS requires 5 years of records. They are living in the dark ages. read more

I went in to take money out, presented them with my debit car and was told right away I could not take out money because I had an LAUSD Paycard. I told the older armenian lady I had done it at another branch with no problems (mind you I had lost my card and they did it for me with just an ID). She kept saying no and called another white blonde lady to help. She said the same thing. I explained they had done it before. The old lady didn't even bother looking up my name until her rude manager told her to. The rude manager or whatever she was asked why I don't have an account and I said I just use the card for direct deposit. Then she asked "why don't you do the direct deposit at YOUR bank." Like, I don't need to explain myself. Then she told me they could try. The old lady put my card ina machine and said no we can't and you don't even have the money you're asking for, WHICH I DID. And I had to ask her about three time to give me my card and ID back before she gave it to me. I had to chat with the bank to make sure I wasn't in the wrong and I wasn't. I emailed the supervisory committee/board of directors about my ordeal after two denials of a fraud claim even with proof, including that I would picket and contact media if needed. The matter was instantly resolved and my stolen funds were returned, minus a $3 ATM service fee... But whatever. 3 dollars, an entire month lost, countless hours of fighting and having to go to the supervisory board is excessive. At least I finally got ALMOST all of my money back and the VP of regional sales was very nice (after threats, albeit), but I closed my accounts immediately and still would not recommend. I come to this bank only for work purposes. Here are the main points: PROS: + friendly tellers. Once I came 5 minutes prior to closing time to deposit cash+coins for one of our clients. The teller was friendly and not impatient that I came so late; he had to even count the coins and when I was 5 cents off from what the amount should've been, he just threw in 5 cents for me. + charter school friendly. Many banks don't necessarily support charter schools since they're kind of a newer thing. + validated parking CONS: - superrrrrr slow service. Tellers take forever to just deposit a check for you. - if you make a large deposit often times they'll try to put a hold on the amount so you can't even access it until 1-2 weeks later. Overall I wouldn't make this my personal bank as it's not conveniently located everywhere nor is it fast enough for personal banking purposes. read more
