This I am filing this complaint to document a deeply troubling and victimizing interaction I experienced with an assistant manager and her helper, whose actions appeared to intentionally dismiss, minimize, and ultimately help cover up behavior that was racially motivated. Rather than addressing my concerns with professionalism or accountability, they deflected responsibility, aligned with one another, and created an environment where racism was ignored and implicitly protected. This experience left me feeling disrespected, silenced, and targeted, and it reflects a serious failure in leadership, ethics, and customer care. No customer should ever be made to feel this way. Based on this experience, I strongly advise others not to bank with this company, as it has demonstrated an alarming tolerance for discriminatory conduct and a lack of integrity in handling legitimate complaints. I had another great experience working with Alan Shelley at California Credit Union! Alan took the initiative to let me know that I was eligible to refinance my home at a lower rate. This was greatly appreciated because I do not keep my eye on the mortgage rate market since I am terrible at financial planning. Alan saved me over $200+ each month on my mortgage payments and all the closing costs were covered by the credit union. An incredible deal. Alan made the process seamless for me and explained all the technical details. Whenever I had a question about the technical jargon, Alan would break it down for me in layman's terms. I am a big believer in nonprofit banking, so it felt really great to not only refinance with a credit union but to also know that my mortgage remains with the credit union for the remainder of its term. Lastly, I've been banking with California Credit Union for many years -- my savings and checkings accounts are with CCU and I hope to stay with them for the remainder of my time on earth! They give out teacher grants each year to support their classroom projects -- what's not to love about a credit union that gives back to public schools?! read more

Terrible customer service! I'm thinking of closing my account down. I applied for a line of credit recently, Cecilia was helping me with it and she was so unprofessional. She barely communicated with me through the process, said, she had been out of the office for a few days. It took more than a whole week to get an answer. I recently applied to Caltech credit union and they were so different, so professional and they said they would have an answer for me in a couple of days at most. I will definitely be making the switch. I do not recommend this credit union, they are rude, unprofessional, and will look for any excuse not to help you out. They denied my request for a line of credit and my credit score is EXCELLENT! I'm literally mind blown! I believe they target people based on their race, like when they wouldn't give loans to women of colour back in the days! Insane how my score is in the 800s and they still denied my request. Yet they're constantly offering me a $30,000 car loan, the amount I asked for was waaay below $30,000. Go figure! read more

Terrible experience here at this bank. I went into the branch to speak with a manager about ordering cash ahead of time for a withdrawal, the manager quoted me a day of pickup then did not honor it. Then called me and told me they would not be able to order my funds, but went on to explain to me my funds were available for use in my account. He wouldn't answer my questions, I advise anyone who wants to have real access to their own money without this branch telling you when you can have your cash or not, choose elsewhere. The manner in which they treated me as if I'm some stranger to my own money is insulting. And I can't ever get a hold of anyone in the branch to speak with when I call bc of the way their phoning system is setup. Save yourself the trouble and frustration if you want to trust where your money is and your true access to it. read more

WORST CREDIT UNION EXPERIENCES EVER! I have worked with several credit unions for multiple businesses and personal finances. I don't know about dealing with this branch directly, but, in general, an account with this credit union is worse than any big bank. Among issues: 1) Pre-approval of my auto loan until sitting in front of the auto-dealer at the time of purchase. Then after 60 minutes on hold due to "unusually high call volume" (typical wait time is 30-90 minutes), a representative informs us that the loan preapproval will not be honored due to a verification issue with a completely separate signature loan that was still processing. I managed to contact my OTHER credit union and they put through both the auto-loan and signature loan immediately. A slightly higher interest rate, yes, but at least no shenanigans or falsehoods. 2) Reversal of a mobile deposit as they felt the "image looked funny." This took me 3 days and taking the original check into the branch (with its issuer) to show them it was "real." By this time, the urgency of the mobile deposit was completely moot and again I had to perform financial gymnastics to get everything paid and covered in the interim. 3) THE LAST STRAW: The credit union experienced some sort of issue with their Zelle wherein all payments on the first of the month (a Friday) were withdrawn from the account, but declined and never sent to the recipients. After 90 minutes on the phone and two management escalations (leaving me on hold for a minimum 20 min. each transfer), I was finally able to get a provisional credit so that (for my safety and security) as a single woman, I could drive to a bank branch, withdraw the cash in large bills, and move about Los Angeles, paying in person. The CU REFUSED to issue any documentation or evidence of the bank's Zelle issue, rendering me to spend more of my unpaid time talking with bill partners to try and explain the situation and avoid late fees. I was advised by the CU NOT to use any kind of online payments for 3-5 business days, so I transferred my mortgage payment another way. The CU then tried to withdraw my mortgage payment and summarily suspended ALL of my online payment processes when they couldn't access the account. I just spent another 90 min. on the phone getting back access to my Zelle and online payment system. After almost 15 years of my loyal membership, including both business and personal accounts, I'm gone. read more

Definitely discrimination going on here. I'm an advocate for a young African African adult who was previously homeless and needs to build credit so when they age out of the facility where they've been at for a year and a half, they have options. I mistakenly went into this branch thinking it was my credit union and was approached by the manager, Karen, who kindly told me that this branch was open to the public and I would get $100 sign on bonus if I joined, which I declined. With that in mind, I thought it was then a great place for the youth to get a secured credit card and start building credit. I went in alone and explained the situation to a manager named Gabriel, who was leaving after 19 years to work with the unhoused population, who also kindly told me that it is open to the public as Karen said, the youth can get a secured credit card if their ID had their current address (it did) and a certain amount of money to put down (not a problem). I did take the youth to the North Hollywood branch and the treatment given to them was completely different than when I, a white man, went alone. I remembered how well Karen treated me and went back with the youth to this Pasadena branch. The worker, Neyva, took all of the youth's information: Social security number, address and previous address, made copy of ID, suggest they open an account with $25 in addition to the amount of money needed to open secured credit card (which they had that day), even had them pick a password in case they had to call the branch and be identified. After all that and it seemed to almost be complete, Neyva left for a long time while talking to Karen (I can see them at her desk). Neyva came back and said she would call back on Tuesday (this took place on a Thursday...ironically, Monday was Juneteenth) because the youth's address where they've been residing at for a year and a half doesn't show up on the credit report and they have to get it approved. (Even though this is for someone who has NO credit). I called the youth on Tuesday night. Nevya never called. Not on Wednesday, either. I went into the branch Thursday to talk with Karen and once Nevya saw me, she told me she called the youth. I explained they said she didn't. She then called the youth right then and they texted me saying they weren't approved because they weren't a member. Karen came out and spoke to me. I told her that she had told me they were open to the public a couple of months ago and she initially said yes but then when I told her the story, she backtracked and said they aren't open to the public but will be next month. So...MANY lies here and different treatment. The youth was told to bring ID with current residence. Check. Bring this amount of money. Check. Give all this personal information including SSN. Check. Then told two different reasons why they were denied. Neyva lied about calling the youth (I have a screenshot of their calls that day...I was the only caller checking to see if they called on Tuesday.) The credit union was obviously hoping they wouldn't follow up (or me as their advocate). When Neyva called and told the youth they were denied, they didn't tell them what they told me: in July it will be open to the public (so try then). There's no reason for all of these lies if the policy was consistent and applied fairly. I contacted Karen's boss, Alex, who said he'd look into it, but assured me the underwriters don't know the race of the youth. But Karen saw the youth and I would bet the application never went to the underwriters and she made the decision to deny. I'm sure a white privileged college student from Pasadena who has lived in a dorm for a month would get a secured credit card, and many probably have. I hope there is internal review and a broader third party investigation into their practices. read more

I opened an account here when it was at its former location, so long ago I can't even remember how long it's been or where it used to be. It used to be a great credit union that I referred a lot of people to. I have used it for my small business and main personal account. What I Like: 1. It has plenty of parking 2. It's in a good location 3. The manager is friendly What I Don't Like: 1. It's parking lot is really busy 2. It's interest rates are really low 3. It's had frequent turnover in employees for more than a year 4. The employees do not seem to be trained very well. Nor does it's accounts manager who sets-up the new accounts. The tellers don't seem like they enjoy being there or maybe they just don't like helping people. 5. I don't enjoy visiting this location, it doesn't have a good "Vibe" anymore. 6. This branch has made deposit mistakes with some very, very large deposits like $91,000 and $150,000 that took me multiple visits, phone calls that took weeks to figure out and resolve, due to teller mistakes. I now have to go over every transaction I make to check for mistakes before it goes into my accounting software. I never used to have to double check the credit union, now I have to do it every time. 7. The new voice for its automated phone line is really bad, not sure why they replaced the previous one. (Just figure I might as well include it, since I am writing a review.) 8. Getting through to someone in the branch or customer service via phone has become time frustrating and time consuming. In the past, California Credit Union as a whole used to have the best phone service in the area, now it's become the worst. 9. Others I referred to this credit union have told me they ended up leaving to another credit union. 10. I pulled out my large accounts and left only my basic small business account because I lost confidence with the repeat deposit errors with my large deposits. I won't keep significant amounts here anymore, and plan to eventually close my remaining accounts. 11. They're short staffed, and the manager is at the teller window either helping customers or helping the new tellers frequently. I really hope they re-up their game at this location. read more

Came to this California Credit Union Branch this morning to straight deposit a check. I think this is the opening day at the Pasadena location. It is clean, but it has a cold feel with "Bandit Barrier" glass. I was quickly called to the teller window, but I had to make a morning greeting to her. There were 2 tellers working, and they did not look, or act friendly towards me. What a greeting to welcome people to your new branch. They offer free coffee on a table near member sign-in sheet. Giving this place two stars. If I had written this review prior to my visit today it would definitely have been at least 4 stars. My experience today resonates to similar experiences of other reviewers; which is a shame because prior to today my banking experience was very positive. So today there wasn't any welcoming customer service whatsoever. The line moved very slowly and the interaction I observed between customers and tellers was very impersonal. At one point I witnessed a teller roll her eyes at a customer when he made a request for a roll of quarters. Apparently this was of great inconvenience as someone had to go to the back and bring back a new, unopened $500 box of rolled quarters. The same teller was visibly irked when the next customer let her know she needed to make a small withdrawal because the ATM machine out front was not working. I was glad that I was called by the other teller on duty. I had a simple cash deposit which afforded me a quick transaction. In spite of the less than courteous customer service I observed today, I've usually been treated quite nicely. Two stars for efficient but inconsistent customer service. I specifically did NOT take my money to Wells Fargo and brought it here. Unfortunately in the short amount of time my experience has been terrible. After opening out account on 11/8, by the 23rd we had not received our debit cards. When I called they swore up and down we did not have orders/applications for debit cards. I asked them to check again and WOW they found them, that was annoying, but it got worse. When my partner went into the branch to make a deposit and check on our cards on 11/28 they told us they sent them to another address, NOT our address but the main location for the nonprofit we opened these under. I thought ok, not a HUGE deal we'll go there and pick them up. Well, they NEVER received our cards either. So on 11/29 I call in again to let them know we have not received any debit cards and they swear up and down there are no applications for debit cards again. I tell the guy this is what I was told previously and they eventually found them, however he assured me there was never an application on file for debit cards. I asked him what he thinks I should do since debit cards were sent out in my name and now they are lost, he assures me there were never any debit cards applied for. So I asked him what does that mean then that 2 other people found these applications, he assures me again no applications were ever filed and he can't speak for those previous people. I said well what about all the paperwork I filled out when I opened the account and information I provided, he couldn't speak to that either. So, this leads me to this conclusion: the single person that opened our accounts is terrible at his job of opening accounts, or everyone else that works there is terrible, neither option is great. read more

I was once very happy with CCU when it was teacher focused and cared to answer costumer phone calls. Every time I call the message says "we are experiencing a high call volume" and I have opted twice for a call back I never received. Since the merger I have noticed a decline in service and quality. I requested a new debit card and they somehow linked my debit card to my wife's account that also has its own debit card and they both function from one account. How do you screw that up? To top it off no one answers the phone to help me fix this. I may find a new institution for my banking, what a shame. read more

I love my credit union. I have been using this credit union before they were at this location and before I had children. The one big problem with this location is that the parking for credit union members is usually taken up by people that are not using the credit union. I've never had to park on the street before behind the parking lot but I have had to do that recently. When I am conducting business and money transactions, I don't wanna have to park that far away from the banking institution. I have watched people come out of the Sylvan learning business that have had their cars parked in the member parking only spots for over 20 minutes or longer. They just sit there and don't move their car. I feel that this could be remedied by one person having their car towed but also putting on the signs that there is member parking only from 8:30 to 5:30 Monday through Saturday. I want to bring new business to the bank in form of my mom but I don't wanna have to park across the street if she needs a space that is close to the bank. I really really hope that this parking situation gets corrected. Because the tellers know me and I know them and this is a wonderful credit union. I feel that it is the management that needs to take care of the problem that I have. But I don't believe I am alone in This. read more

Pasadena Location. Well thankfully I had been to this location before or else I wouldn't have known that you write your name on a sheet of paper for them to know who was next to speak to someone. For people that are new, they just stand there and wait to be greeted or awkwardly try to get a hold of someone to ask what to do. As the next available person came to get the next person in line, they didn't even acknowledge the rest of us sitting there. Then it was finally my turn when I walked over with the man. He said what do you need help with today and I explained I wanted a personal loan. He seemed so bothered by me being there. He was extremely annoyed and I couldn't have been happier to leave after waiting for 35 min without being acknowledged and take my business elsewhere. I have been a member of CCU since 2017 and have many times wanted to write a poor review. But CCU has redeemed itself with me. The manager has gone above and beyond helping me with certain complicated processes and has promptly responded to any correspondence with me. I would say they have improved from previous years and would recommend giving them another try if you have had a negative experience. read more

The hours here are pretty sucky. 9-5 Mon through Thurs, 9-6 Fri and 9-1 Sat. I mean hello?! Don't they realize that the people who put their money in this bank WORK during those hours? Come here on a Saturday morning and bring something to crochet while you wait in line. UGH! The people who work here are seldom helpful, so be prepared to waste a ton of time repeating your requests over and over. And if you arent a customer of theirs and are cashing a check or making a deposit for someone else, be prepared to tell thim everything from your date of birth to you favorite color and shoe size. I got an account here because I frequently get checks from others with an account here and got tired of the hassle of waiting to verify the signature etc. Getting an account didnt help much. We are so glad to use this credit union. The people who work here are consistently pleasant and very helpful. We have a business account here as well; the business account money market offers a good interest rate. We switched our accounts from CitiBank here and couldn't be happier; we just wish we came here earlier. We deal with real people (and the same people) whenever we call or come in person, and are happy to be with a non-profit credit union as opposed to a very much for-profit bank. I give an employee there, by the name of Marina, 5 stars!!! I had been there in the lobby, almost an hour, lol, trying to obtain funds sent via Zelle from my son so I could get a Cashier's chk. I was back n forth in my cell phone between the CCU website and Zelle and then Venmo and just couldn't figure it out. Marina, being so patient, helped me go into my phone, open up the app, back into the CCU website, switching to Venmo because my son wasn't able to use Zelle, etc. All I can say is "THANK YOU MARINA", people like you are the cornerstones of good customer service. This USED TO BE THE CALIFORNIA TEACHERS CREDIT UNION...they were really good then...my father has been a member for 60 plus years..I have been a member for 30 years...They are now just some union with something in San Diego...they have a credit card processing company that handles their things...they are nice to talk to..but for whatever reason...they just want to harrass my father and I because he is in a nursing home and say I have no legal authority to talk for him...I do I have a living trust...and all my checks for their credit card have cleared...they are mean and nasty and do not care for people!!! read more

It's been a long time since I've financed a car but had the recent opportunity to buy a favorite car at the end of the lease. I shopped financing rates at the dealer and local banks and was referred to California Credit Union in Pasadena by my commercial banker. What a great referral. On what was probably a fairly small loan for, Karen, the VP and Pasadena Branch Manager, went great lengths to explain the process to me, approve the loan in a matter of hours, and make arrangements to complete the paperwork. The deal closed the next day and ... the loan was at a rate that was far lower than offered by ANYONE else. I could not have been more impressed. The manager Karen is ego driven and cares only about looking good and dressing well and lacks professional support skills. Of course the customer service reps at the branch are nice and polite, they have to be. The problem is they don't give you a direct contact number to your particular branch and you have to use phone support which is terrible. The banks website is ALWAYS broken and you will not be able to login to your account. This problem has not been fixed for months now. CCU just looks nice but lacks professional customer care. I dont tend to write reviews unless I receive excellent or extremely poor service and in this case it was extremely poor especially for a bank! My review is based on one of the Tellers by the name Sam and not the actual bank Sam was extremely rude with absolutely no customer service skills. She asked me for my last 4digits of my social which was odd because I have banked with this credit union for a few years now and no teller has every asked me that before but regardless I gave it to her and I asked her how come she responded with a nasty attitude "well I have been here for years and that's what we do" regardless of the policy there are ways of speaking to customers without being rude or raising your tone of voice especially since I wasn't trying to be difficult I was just curious. (There were also no customers in the bank or managers around so she knew she would get away with addressing me as she did) I also bank with Wells Fargo and Chase bank. Wells by far has the best customer service in my opinion. Wells Fargo really raised the bar it would be nice to see California Credit Union follow in their steps in that department. However I will still continue to bank with Credit Union but will for sure not be returning to this branch. If you are in LA the best location I have been to is the one in North Hollywood. read more

Very poor experiences with this credit union. 1. They had my security information incorrect and it took high water to correct it. All the while, never an apology given. 2. Month after month, the online banking site locks me out and claims that I have entered incorrect information. When I AGAIN try to get a new password, surprise, it says the security info I give is incorrect and it says my number is not on file...no account exists for the number. 3. I then have to engage in yet another looong phone call with a supervisor to correct the issue and the person acts like it is a simple mess up. 4. Go in person, get dumb employees. This is a Mickey Mouse business. Very tiny and with rude, condescending employees. Not a good deal. There are so many credit unions out there, give this one a pass. read more

Decided to make the change to a credit union a few years back when it became apparent how some of the big banks were taking our country's economy down. It was the best decision I've made in a long time. I rarely wait in line! 2 people in front of you would be a long line here. Compare that to B of A across the street where everyone and their mom is banking and the lines can be huge at times. Probably my 5th year here and I love it. I lost my records for a deposit i made with several checks and I needed to see those checks again to record them properly. This woman working behind the counter went out of her way and dug through old boxes of deposits to find my checks I deposited so I could write everything down that I need to. That is awesome customer service! Pros: No lines ever Parking is never more than 50' from the front door. Free validation Nice people always willing to help and go above and beyond. Pay all my bills using their website and have never had anyone not get a single check. Everything is fast and easy here. Cons: None read more

I opened business accounts here, and made substantial deposits, and ordered checks. The checks never came. I finally asked about it, and they told me they needed to review the cashflow of the businesses, which I had just established. I provided them the documentation they needed, and they said it was fine. The checks still never came. I went in again and asked about it, and they said they would call me with an update. They never called. Two weeks later - after this had been going on for many weeks - I went in again, and they told me they would be closing the accounts in two weeks, because "I had failed to secure" the business data, or some such nonsense, in the form of a boilerplate form letter they printed out and gave me on the spot! They then said they would send me the deposits, and I told them no way, that they had to give me my money back right away. So they did. But they made out the checks to the business accounts which they had refused to service, so when I took these to my credit union, I was told I couldn't deposit them, since they were made out to the accounts at the institution that had given me the checks! I had to go back and have the check re-done, so I was basically walking up and down Lake Boulevard in Pasadena with thousands of dollars in cashiers check on me. Completely bonkers. They seem to have no consistency or internal logic, they don't communicate, they make random and capricious decisions, they put your money at risk, and they don't really care. My question to them was, if I didn't qualify to have checks issued by them, why did they take my deposit? They had no answer. read more

Hayk K. is the right guy to talk to when you want to save $$$ from those other large banks who kill you with fees. I just started a great relationship with this bank!
