I was going to only give a 4 star because the menu isn't supppppper special, but I had to bump it up to a 5 because the staff is so outstanding. I never heard of this restaurant and I thank the owner for putting it in my life, now, to enjoy for the future. We were allowed to order anything on the menu for free, including the items that cost $2.25 extra, such as sweet potato friends and the grilled corn. Those are the items I picked for my two sides. They were so delicious. I chose something that I wouldn't wanna go to the trouble and prepare for myself at home. I only have myself to cook for, so I keep it simple. So I picked the fried catfish. The outside was light and crispy, and the inside was delightful, soft and moist, and very hot. I think I picked a very suitable dipping sauce for the catfish, which was the garlic butter cajun sauce. The people at the counter were so friendly. When I was leaving the girl remembered my name and said "Julia, how did you like your dinner?" I told her the friend catfish was so good, that next time I come in, I wanna order the same thing, cos if I ordered something else, I'd be giving up the catfish. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PURCHASE A GIFT CARD FROM EITHER BRANCH LOCATION IN ARIZONA UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE TIME AND GAS! I attempted to purchase a gift card at the Mesa, AZ location on 10/7/24 but I was told "We are sorry, but our system isn't allowing us to ring up a gift card for you." I was instructed to go to the California Fish Grill website or go to the alternate location in Phoenix. There are no options to purchase a gift card currently on the California Fish Grill website. I called the Phoenix location prior to arrival to confirm that they could fulfill my request for a gift card in which the associate confirmed that they would be able to provide me with a gift card. Additionally, I forewarned the associate that the Mesa location was unable to provide me a gift card. Upon arrival to the Phoenix California Fish Grill I am told "Sorry, we aren't able to provide you with a gift card. It's doing the same thing as the other location you were just at" from the same individual that stated over the phone that he could provide a gift card. What more can I do besides call the other location to determine if I can be provided with a service prior to driving 25 minutes to be told that gift cards are not available and that "the system" is not able to ring up a gift card? I arrived well in advance (over an hour) prior to the establishment closing so the "systems" were up and running. This is unacceptable and unprofessional. Why are associates not trained on how to administer gift cards so that guests are not driving around the Phoenix valley when neither location is able to provide gift cards? I ordered the seared ahi with cajun seasoning and asked for diced zucchini and sweet potato fries as my sides. They also serve alcohol here and I had a Pacifico bottle with my meal. Total came to a little over $30 with tip. Dining area is casual, so find a spot and wait for your food to be prepared. In less than 10 minutes, all my food was ready for pick-up at the counter. If you need extras like lemon or cocktail sauce, just ask for it. For fast food fish, this was pretty good. The portions are solid and I had enough left over for next day lunch. Ahi was seared perfectly and really enjoyed my piece of fish. Fountain drinks also available here and seltzer available. Restrooms require a code which is printed on your receipt. I placed a to-go order at the kiosk in the restaurant. Picked up the bag, drove home and discovered that my entire meal was missing (spouse and kiddo got their complete orders.) I called and was told "oh, yeah, we didn't pack your food. You can come back and we'll make it again." I live 20 minutes away. I asked for a refund and was told that I'd have to drive back to get a refund. I ordered the upgraded version of their chips, and those came with a very tasty Asian inspired spicy dressing.
