First time eating here. This place must be pretty new, it's by my mother in law's house and I have not seen it before so strap up and enjoy this ride. You order at the counter and they bring your food to you. It's really quite cute inside and very clean. All food is made homemade and fresh. Now to the best part; the food is amazing. All of it, so far. I had a bacon omelette and asked for crispy bacon and it was perfect. It came with refried beans but the beans are done the right way and they are perfect. Homemade potatoes that are made to perfection and the chorizo is great. You get your choice of homemade tortillas, flour or corn and they are definitely homemade and fresh and delicious. The salsa is very good and tastes like what I make at home, I think they stole my recipe lol Karaoke on Friday nights from 7-12, have to check it out. Good friendly service as well. Came in with my wife and daughter for some menudo. What I got was a bowl full of meat and no hominy. I asked if they could remake and they took so long we had to get it to go. My wife ordered 2 large tacos also adobada and a carnitas sope. The deco is funny, the tables are themed from the game lotería. There's a few tvs and some music playing. The tacos were really good and hot ( temperature wise). The sope was huge and well portioned. The red salsa was my favorite oh yeah they offer made in house chips with salsa for $1.00. As someone that grew up eating Mexican food, moving from a small town in Texas where practically every restaurant was a Mexican restaurant to Arizona made it difficult to find a restaurant that served the authentic Mexican food I grew to love, since tons of places have americanized and franchised their locations out. Enter La Cocina Economica, a diamond in the rough. I stumbled in for the first time in 2009 when I was in the area. They're close to a Filiberto's, but anyone that's had "filly-b's" should be familiar with that weird, metallic aftertaste in all the food you get at Filiberto's. I opted for La Cocina and I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I was blown away by the authenticity of the food and the atmosphere. The entire staff spoke Spanish back then (and only a little English), but that was then... Today, most of the staff members (which are still there from 2009), are fluently bilingual. The menu has changed very little in the past 13 years and I've had dozens of opportunities to try every dish, including the tilapia. My favorite is the chile verde, made strikingly identical to the way my grandfather made it when he was alive. The flour tortillas are made in house, and laughably large. Like, seriously, it's the size of a trucker's steering wheel. Every dish is delicious... if you like street tacos, definitely don't miss out, and get them with corn tortillas. The carnitas are fantastic, too. Literally everything they make is edible gold on a plate. The staff is SUPER friendly too. I moved away in 2010 and came back 2 years later and they still remembered me. It's refreshing to go to a place where you're remembered, and the staff isn't turning over like a rotisserie. If you're considering La Cocina for the first time, DO IT. You're sure to agree, best Mexican food in the valley. read more

We weren't the only people frustrated with the service many people complained while we were waiting. The worst part of everything was we have been talking about trying this place for years. The BIRRIA was on our minds. Not even close to Birria I have tried in other restaurants around town. It was super dry and no flavor. La Cocina Economica is a little place near downtown. I came across it on Yelp, and decided to give it a try. The menu has some great stuff. And the prices are great. It really is "The Economical Kitchen"! The interior has tarot paintings on tables, cartoony artwork of Mexican celebrities, and photos of actor Pedro Infante, who is clearly the owner's favorite. We walk in, and the record scratches. Yeah, thats right. We up in the spot! Clearly not too many güeritas visit. You order at the front counter, and your food is brought to you. It does warn you on a wall sign that everything is made from scratch, so don't mind the wait. We waited a bit, but not horribly long. We had great chips and salsa. I had a Mexican Coke, while J had a fountain soda. We each got a Torta Mixta. It was basically ceviche shrimp and octopus with onions, cilantro and avocado on top. So good! J got the Tampiquena steak, and thought it was well-seasoned and cooked. I has the huevos con nopales. This was great as well. The nopales were just right - not too spicy. Gone for lunch here today for the first time and was surprised of how amazing it was. There is alot to choose from the menu, there is not way to eat light once you see the options! I ordered the number 9, it comes with a cheese enchilada steak, beans and rice and a grilled jalapeno. I got the corn tortillas and they are the freshest and fluffiest corn tortillas i have ever had at a restaurant. Id definitely recommend this place if u want birria tacos aswell (my bf ordered them). My boyfriend and I are regulars at this spot! They have the best chips and salsa always freshly made and not only that but the shrimp tacos have the freshly made tortillas as well!
