It's also super convenient for me since it's just a 2-minute drive away, and I'd happily pay a little more to support a local spot like this. That said, I've been utterly disappointed by the customer service on multiple visits. On one occasion, I asked a question and later realized I was speaking with the owner (I recognized her from Instagram). She came across as very dismissive and annoyed that I was asking for help. On at least three other visits, I've had similar experiences with staff seeming irritated or put out when I asked questions or wanted to check out, but that shouldn't surprise me because culture is set from the top. I've tried giving them several chances because I really do love their products, but the customer experience has consistently been off-putting. I hope they stay around and just improve their outlook on their customers.

I am a long time resident of Dana Point and love to support local, family run businesses…read more Unfortunately, my experience with Dana Point Nursery has been consistently disappointing, and almost entirely due to customer service. Over the years, I have found the owner, Brooke, to respond to most requests with some variation of "no." Do you carry a particular item? No. Can you order something specific? No. Can I exchange something? No. Can I return an item I purchased just a few hours earlier? No. The most recent example was a simple request for a 10-gallon plastic pot. Last week, I was told they were out of stock and to come back after Friday. When I returned this weekend, they still didn't have one. While walking through the nursery, I noticed a used 10-gallon pot and asked whether I could buy it. The answer was no, and I was told to come back next week. The problem wasn't that they were out of stock. Businesses run out of products all the time. The problem was the complete lack of initiative to help solve the customer's problem. A simple offer to order one when I first visited, or even an attempt to suggest an alternative, would have turned a frustrating experience into a positive one. Instead, I went to Armstrong and bought what I needed there. What makes this particularly disappointing is that Dana Point Nursery depends on the support of the local community. Most people want to support independent businesses, but customer loyalty is earned through helpfulness and service. Unfortunately, after several experiences like this, I have decided to take my business elsewhere.

That said, on this visit it was harder than usual to find help in the outdoor area. While several team members were available indoors, they were unwilling to answer questions and directed us to find someone outside instead. After some searching, we finally found Kai. I understand that roles can be divided, but this felt different from the level of customer service I've experienced here in the past. I asked to see the manager, Karen Sandell, to discuss me selling my products at her store. Karen asked me to send her an email to explain my business. I have multiple times emailed her, attached were pictures of my gardens. She never replied. I called several times and left messages on her voice mail extension 225. I also urged her to check her spam mail, in case my emails end up there. Several calls and emails later and no response. Very unprofessional! I expected better customer service from a high end nursery, especially that I am also a customer who buys pots, soil, miniatures and plants for my gardening projects. I am very very disappointed. A simple thanks but no thanks call or email would have been professional enough.
