Had to try it! Just moved to Omaha a few months ago and I wandered in here after a long week at work. I tried the queso with beef & Cali taco. Y'all... when I say get in the car, GET IN THE CAR! Part of me wishes I was a little drunk (this is literal drunk food). Part of me wished there was more seasoning (don't worry... dip in queso and it elevates everything) The service was wonderful. Having never been there I asked for suggestions and ended up getting my boo thang a chimichanga as well. First of all, this is a midtown staple and I'd encourage everyone to try it at least once, so take the star rating how you will. I've been here a dozen times throughout my life and it's always been good. The Cali Taco is their version of a puffy taco, and I remember them being a lot better in the past. I'm not sure when they went from being a puffy taco shell to basically a fried bread shell. I came Friday night after work to pick up tacos to go. They changed their hours, so they're open for lunch but close again until 5. I arrived about 4:50 so I just waited and was the first person there when they re-opened. They told me they were still heating up the fryers, so it'd be a minute. I got a margarita while I waited and it was probably one of the best ones I've had! It was made to order and wasn't made with a premade mix, she shook it, which resulted in almost a soft, creamy texture. I had a great convo with the lady who took my order, who also ended up being the bartender. I was thanked by her and another guy, who looked like maybe the owner or manager, it just felt like a welcoming experience. As far as the food, $55 was a lot to pay for 3 tacos, queso without chips, and a margarita. The Cali Tacos are $11 apiece, but they're huge. They're probably the most white people tacos you can find, but still good. I remember the shell being more crispy in the past, so I'm not sure if they were just packed up before they were ready, or if the drive home softened them. They don't reheat well because of the lettuce, so I wouldn't suggest ordering more than 1 at a time unless you have a big appetite. The queso was super thick, not spicy, but it was good. I probably wouldn't get it again though, it was too much with the tacos. Points on the salsa verde! It tastes like authentic salsa, the red is good but not at all spicy. I want to go back and try the regular tacos to see how they compare, hopefully the regular tacos can redeem the Cali Tacos. read more

I asked the server what I should get as it was my first time. I said I wanted tacos. He recommended the beef Cali I believe. But he referred to it as a taco. He then told me it's be pretty large so I'd only need one. So it comes out and it's this deep fried tortilla with beef, lettuce, and cheese. Part of me wanted to refuse it immediately. I decided to eat it instead. I honestly wasn't a fan of the deep fried tortilla. I get that they're known for it but I just wanted regular simple tacos. I'm giving 4 stars because I should've asked more questions about it before ordering. And my server was extremely nice. I'd love to return and try their more traditional tacos. read more

The staff here are very rude. They do not do accomodations and basically told us not to come back last time we were there after being regulars for years. The last time and time before, they were very rude when I explained our daughter has a shellfish allergy and simply asked if there's a way to prevent cross contamination. I understand it isn't always possible which I was willing to hear yet they weren't even willing to answer the first time so I shrugged it off and our daughter didn't have a reaction so I figured we'd try again a few months later. This time my daughter reminded me to ask them as we do at all restaurants and they looked at me like I was asking them to change things when I honestly only asked if it was possible to prevent cross contamination or if all the food is already made. The man came out and sneered at us and told us he wasn't going to change anything. It was very uncomfortable and at this point, my child was tearing up yet, since I had stupidly bought the food, we sat down & got their salsa which we've always liked, ate, and left vowing never to go back. The others in line also looked very uncomfortable by the interaction and, maybe just my mind but it seemed like they, too, thought the staff was going overboard and felt bad for my child who was not deserving of their disgusting attitude. And because we stayed after the interaction, looking back, I'm surprised nobody ever came over to apologize to us. They just were very happy to be a*holes apparently to paying customers who simply wanted to know if there's any way to avoid shrimp. Their food has always tasted okay - like 3.5 stars. Their convenience & location was 4 stars. We now just avoid that area altogether which is sad because there's a cute coffee shop across street that we liked but the really unnecessary bad memories of that place have contaminated the neighborhood for us. What a amazing surprise California Tacos was. We stopped there on a whim just driving by. The food, drinks, great staff and cleanliness of this fun and charming restaurant really surprised us. It is a hidden gem with amazing talent in the kitchen. Everything was excellent. We found out that Thursday is offering slow smoked chicken wings and pork. We tried the wings on a fluke and WOW! We heard about California Tacos on Jacob Cruikshank's YouTube channel and have been looking forward to visiting. We had to circle a couple of times to get parking. The interior is definitely dive-y, but clean. A friendly person took our order and we got our drinks and some salsa and got settled at our table. We ordered a beef cali taco, chicken cali taco and steak nachos (half flour and half corn tortilla chips). We found both cali tacos to be of generous size but lacking any flavor in the "shell" or the meat, even with the addition of salsa. The only thing flavorful was the lettuce. We both left probably 90% of our uneaten $10 tacos on the table when we left. The nachos were good. I do wish they were more than just cheese, beans and meat. Some tomatoes, onions, sour cream, etc. would have been a nice addition. I'll be honest, even though the nachos were good, we left disappointed that we'd spent over $40 on the meal. read more
