These guys are the best in the business - couldn't be more grateful to have found them and for not only the impeccable work they did, but for the work ethic with which Fritz carries his business. It's hard these days to find someone who really knows that they're doing, performs high quality work, AND who is great to work with, and that's Fritz and his team. We had a patio and a few staircases of Lincoln pavers that I thought were goners. They hadn't been sealed properly upon installation, and the combination of weather, dirt, and damage from painters had them looking pretty bad. I contacted a bunch of other tile professionals but no one seemed to really know just how sensitive Saltillo tiles and Lincoln pavers are - they suggested using a gas power washer, which would absolutely break them. I called Fritz and recognized his voice right away from all the YouTube videos I'd watched on how to treat these tiles specifically. The work he and his team did did not disappoint! Fritz was able to fit me in the same week, and came with a team of guys who worked 100% by hand to impeccably clean and reseal each tile. Couldn't believe how quickly they worked and the level of precision they had on each tile. Fritz even took a razor blade and scraped off each bit of paint from the painters. My tiles are looking gorgeous and they are now SO easy to clean. My rain barrel spilled a bunch of algae gunk on the tiles and grout a week after they left, and it wiped right off. The patio looks about as new as when the tiles were first installed. Lastly, after they left and I'd already paid, I realized that there was a calculation error with the square footage billed. Fritz could have just taken my money, ghosted me, and run, but he was willing to correct the mistake and sent me back the accidental extra payment. As I said, it's hard to find people who have strong work ethic, and this really showed Fritz's true colors as a business owner and his work ethic. Fritz "refinished" our Saltillo tiles a few years ago. We are still dealing with the aftermath and will likely have to tear out and replace our tile. I am surprised he is still in business. He is able to strip tile. However, his sealer is from a bog box store and is not meant to be used on Saltillo. It will look shiny when he walks out the door, but will begin to peel and scratch within a few days. We have tried several sealants to fix this but the original finish on the Saltillo was ruined with his methods and there seems to be no fix. Despite the good reviews (which is what I depended on when choosing this service) DO NOT USE CA TILE RESTORATION for Saltillo tiles. Do your homework - not licensed or insured. Learned my lesson the hard way. Also, some other reviews about pressure regarding payment is real and odd. He demanded large large payments upfront and went directly to my bank to cash (my bank called me with concerns that he was committing fraud) - he wasn't, but I think the big, upfront payments are so that he can run out when the floor is still wet and you've been duped into thinking they are going to continue to look that way. read more

We recently bought a Spanish-style house with about a million square feet of very old and very... shall we say well-used Saltillo tile flooring. I did a lot of reading on how to strip and refinish it (and briefly entertained the thought of doing it myself; pro-tip: DO NOT DO THIS). I recently used this group of guys (I would not call them a company) two strip brand new Saltillo that I had so that I could have them match another room in my house. Fritz The owner and the charismatic ConMan promised me that they would look brand new when he was done. They ruined our tile and while I was at work they pressured my wife into paying them. The worst part is one of his workers took my wife's phone and paid him in a non-business way so that we could not dispute the charge without filing a police report. Now we are having to go after them in court. Unfortunately these guys do not have insurance nor a business license so we will have to go after them personally. I know a ton of other people who have gone through the same thing with this company and they will start to speak out now as well. Wow, what a great job! Fritz and his crew stripped and resealed my slate stairs and landings. The old finish was ruined and I couldn't get it removed. It may have been acrylic over urethane, but I couldn't get it off. These guys removed it, cleaned, and did multiple coats of sealer in less than a day. They did a detailed job and left the job site super clean. They also restored some tile on another landing that I was considering replacing. 24 years ago we bought a house with 50 year old brick floors in it (under carpet that was glued to padding that was glued to brick). We exposed the brick but were never able to really get it cleaned up. We had about five different kinds of contractors come in to bid on the job over the years and they all said it would be way too much work to fix and offered instead to bid on jackhammering it all up. I'm too stubborn to give up. 12 years ago we had Saltillo put into more of our rancho style house to kind of blend with the original brick (since this kind of brick is no longer available). The grout lines are too wide and they used too much sand, so it's been really hard to keep the grout clean. And then over the years we have walked the stain right off of the Saltillo in the kitchen. I searched long and hard to find someone who actually knew how to fix all of this. Fritz said it would all have to be stripped by hand so the bricks and tile would not get damaged. He said they could get the bricks and grout all cleaned up and well sealed, and would restore the Saltillo. The pictures, before and after, speak for themselves. It took six guys 17 hours working on their knees to accomplish this. They were polite, diligent, hardworking, and knew what they were doing. They kept the jobsite clean and even repaired a couple of damaged tiles I didn't ask them to repair. They put 6 or 7 coats of sealer on it, and recommend they come back in 3-5 years to keep the traffic areas looking good. They charged exactly what they quoted in the first place. (I had no trouble finding their contractor's license on the state contractors license board website, so I'm not sure what other people commenting here about no license are talking about.) We recently undertook the project of updating and restoring a Spanish Duplex on Miracle Mile. The big splurge we opted for was to replace an old checkerboard vinyl kitchen floor with a beautiful saltillo floor - or so we dreamed. Instead, the people we hired (admittedly unlicensed) ended up screwing up multiple aspects of the installation process. Lesson learned. The result was hazy and dirty looking, the groutlines were ugly and patchy, and there were marks from painter's tape on the floor. What's more, they didn't even fully seal it, so the floor got dirtier and dirtier in only a few weeks. At our lowest point, my husband thought of having the floor entirely redone, but then I found Fritz's blogs online and suggested we hire saltillo tile specialists to "restore" the floor even though it was brand new. A huge team came out to address our kitchen floor and within a half day they had transformed it, leaving me speechless. I never thought our floor could look as good as it did again and it matched our references perfectly. We discovered Fritz through his videos on YouTube. Everything he said about getting down on his hands and knees to strip each tile made sense. He and Kevin did our Saltillo kitchen floor in one day and the results are remarkable. With their 'secret sauce' potions and various scrubbing techniques they even restored tiles I thought were ruined by our table and chair legs. The floor looks new, or actually better - restored. It still has some of the worn character but the finish is a perfect satin sheen. These guys are also super clean workers. They have their moves down. Stripping is a messy job but they did it like surgeons. No stripper splashed onto cabinets or walls, big fans to ventilate the area, and they handled their waste products like pros. Great clean up, everything removed. When they drove away we were left with nothing but a restored tile floor. I openly admit that I have never met Fritz but was just regaled the story of how my parents (non-Yelpers) found him, and were taken care of by him and his crew. Long story short, he's they type of guy that says he's the best, and backs it up with beautiful results. My experience was a very bad one. Besides using fake products he didn't bother to move furniture, pots or even items leaned against the wall. The corners were still extreme!y dirty and untreated. All surfaces are now greasy and already look bad. The residue of whatever he used now tracks through at my house. Whatever this product it was designed to leave a shine and repel water long enough for him to collect payment. He then tried to overcharged me by 67% and lied about the square footage. He then charged me almost $1300 to fix a 5 square feet of tiles. When I try to address the issue with him he refuses to return any texts or calls after cashing my check. We hired Fritz to refinish Saltillo tile. From what we gained from prior owners, the tile was installed in the early 1960's as part of an addition. Based on the appearance of the tile and many years use as a rental, it is highly doubtful that any maintenance was done in over 50 years of use and abuse. The finish was worn off and it was downright black and disgusting! Fritz and his team worked hard to strip, wash, and then re-seal the tile. The tile kept the variation in color and patina, but is now clean and shiny. We plan to use Fritz for maintenance every 3-5 years. It is helpful to note that I obtained quotes from 4 vendors total for this project. (My first real estate agent taught me to always get at least 3.) We rented our home out for 3 years. They didn't take care of the Saltillo tile floor at all.We didn't think the floor would be salvageable. To demo it would have been a nightmare. I looked around on the internet and found Fritz Wittmann doing a U-Tube video staining Saltillo floor. I was amazed at the transformation of the tile he was working on. I e-mailed him on Monday night that my floor needed rescuing. He said he could do it and could come on Friday. He showed up on time with 3 young men. They did a sample of what they could do on a couple of tiles. They came out brand new. I was blown away. So the job began. They used a strong solution to remove the sealer and years worth of grime. They scrubbed with brushes and used several fans to keep the air circulating. Next day they cleaned and we found that the previous owners had used a different color grout on the stairway. Fritz came up with 3 whites that matched the white of the original flooring. That was an extra charge, but it was so worth it to make it uniformed. I was very happy with the job. It looks better than when we bought the place in 2008. The tile still has some of the coyote prints and it still looks rustic, but not trashed. Fritz said he guarantees his work and he is a man of his word. I found a drip of grout paint on a tile that we both missed at the end of the job. He came back two days later and completely refinished that one tile. I couldn't be more pleased with my floor. He saved it. I will add some photos of the bad tiles, and the good tiles. I had over 700 square feet and an additional court yard that they worked on. Pricey but I was looking at twice the cost to rip the floor out and put in something else. These guys did a great job on the patio; cleaning, repairing and sealing. What I appreciated was that they didn't use a powerwasher. On their hands and knees, they scrubbed about 1100 square feet of flagstone that hadn't had any attention in years. I recently hired a contractor to install 500 ft.² of Saltillo tiles in our guest studio. I trusted the guy and he did a great job on setting the tiles and grout. The problem came when he sealed the tiles. We asked for a low sheen sealer. He proceeded to use four coats of penetrating sealer. The finished product was a dull unimpressive chalky looking tile. I talk this through with the contractor and he essentially left me high and dry. At this time I went out on the Internet and started researching proper finishes for Saltillo tiles. I stumbled across some videos of Fritz and his crew. I was intrigued by all of the information he had pertaining to the Saltillo tiles and properly finishing them. I threw out a hell Mary and shot him an email. Keep in mind I'm probably five hours south of him in California. Within one hour he emailed back asking for me to give him a call. He was very pleasant to talk to on the phone and I explained my whole situation. He put a cost together and told me he and his crew could be at my place by the end of the week. I was blown away. Yeah of course I said. Let's do this thing. Keep in mind it wasn't the cheapest solution. But in my opinion it was by far the best solution. I'm going to include a couple photographs. The dull looking photograph is of the floor before hand. The beautiful looking photographs are the finished product. I must say Fritz and his crew are exceptional. Remodeling our kitchen began with the Mexican Saltillo tile floor. We installed it ourselves 30 years ago and stained it a brick red that took away all the great terracotta tones of the natural tile. Fritz really impressed me with his enthusiasm and knowledge. Its what he does exclusively and he's passionate about his work. He gave me a ballpark price based on square footage and said he needed three days for the job. We set a date. Fritz showed up on time with three other guys and they went at it all day long. We're talking hard work, all by hand- not something you see much anymore. He asked for half his bill on the first day, with the remainder due upon successful completion. One of his guys, Kevin, documents everything on an ipad, from beginning to end. They stripped off the old finish, hand painted the tiles and filled holes, cleaned and repaired the grout. The next day they were back at it. I'd saved a bunch of the original tiles, so the guys where able to use those to repair and replace. Fritz was prepared with some Saltillo tiles in his truck for any shortages. On the third day, they finished the floor with a beautiful wet-look sealer. It looks terrific. The variations of the terracotta color complement the finished country kitchen we were going for. You will not find a harder working, more dedicated bunch than Fritz and his guys.
