I was in the market for wax jambu and stumbled upon the website I saw for tropical fruit so thought to give it a drive. When I got to the nursery, It look like another mom pops little nursery place from the exterior, but to my surprise, this place appears bigger than the Costco parking lots combined, jammed packed with trees. It can be overwhelming because of the large selections. Every trees appeared to be thriving and healthy, with many already have fruits. The place was big so I was clueless where to begin. Thank God Gio found me. He is so knowledgeable, professional, kind, funny, and has lots of patience to deal with a picky and curious person like me. He takes his time to show me around. I was lucky to try many different selections of fruits, some I can compared to store bought and many I haven't heard of. The fruits you get from the nursery tasted so much different than the store bought one, more fresh and flavorful in my opinions. I ended up buying a couple trees and am looking forward to buy more in the future. This is my new favorite nursery to visit and highly recommend to anybody who wants to buy quality plants from people who know their products well. Their price is decent and candid. This place is a gardeners haven! Great selection from common fruit trees to more exotic (less well known) trees. The first time I went, I was there to see what selections I have. Gio took his time to show me around the premises with all the varieties of tropical fruit trees they offer. It can be quite overwhelming as the property is quite large. Lalo was there and help clarify and answer some questions I had. Both Gio and Lalo is my go to. I did purchase a mango tree, a mandarin tree and a gem avocado tree. We were just curious about buying a small banana tree. We ended up essentially getting a free tour and tropical gardening lesson about so many cool options we could use in our space. I've been buying exotic trees from California Tropical Fruit Tree nursery for years. These are hard to find trees that are for the most part not easy to grow. The selection is very good and the prices fair for what you get. My experience so far has been very positive. Today I bought a "young" 5-foot tall Jaboticaba for $380. A good deal for such a slow growing tree. With any luck I'll manage to keep it alive for the next couple of years until it gets established. I would definitely recommend them. read more

It's in a beautiful location of Vista on a hilltop, the property and house are both very very nice! The views are breath taking! We walked into the nursery behind the house to find an endless sea of exotic, tropical and uncommon fruit trees! It's paradise here! The reason for the 4 stars is because the prices are a little higher, but that's because they have what other nurseries wish they had!! Perry the owner was very helpful, gave us a lot of information and showed us other trees that we just had to have!! Incredible nursery with unique plants you often wont find elsewhere and everything on the property is healthy and vigorous. Came home with twice what I went there for and am very happy with my trees so far. Perry you are a master and Natalie you were a great help! People giving 1 star reviews dont understand that this man runs a business and cant babysit every customer through every decision. That is the nature of running a successful business. Such a great hidden gem nestled in Vista! Had a great experience and my fruit trees and bushes are already happily blooming!! My husband and I had talked about getting some fruit trees to fill in empty space in our yard. I wanted to support local and small business. I did not want to get tiny overpriced twigs from Home Depot that won't produce fruit for five years. So we ventured to this nursery. It is part of a family's personal property but easy parking is available by the driveway of their home. Signs are well posted with where to go. It is a huge property full of luscious trees, palms, & bushes. We were greeted by the owner Perry. I explained to Perry I have the very opposite of a green thumb and needed something hearty. Perry asked about our yard, soil type, and sun light. He then showed us around his property and what would work best in our yard, including a miniature peach tree to fit in a small space! All the trees we purchased are mature and ready to produce fruit. Signs are posted not to eat the fruit (Perry explained that he wants people to be able to purchase trees with fruit on them ready to go home) but let us try a few items we were interested in to make sure it was exactly what we wanted. Perry explained when the different fruits would bloom so we knew what to expect when we got home. We had them planted within a week of coming home and they have already taken off with new foliage and blooms. My son has been so excited to go out everyday and see if blueberries are ready for picking and picking his own mandarin orange. Such a cool place, you don't find nurseries anymore. Can't find mature fruit ready to eat like this at Home Depot. Happy to support local small business and my yard looks so spruced up!! read more

Perry was beyond helpful in assisting me in finding the right fruit trees for my backyard. He also helped us look for the best plants based on his selection at the time. I wanted to get an Avocado tree and he warned me about how costly it would be because of how much water the plant requires and I greatly appreciated his honesty. I went about 4 months ago and the guava and stone trees are producing beautiful fruit and my kids love picking blueberries in the yard. The people work there are very rude! I came to purchase 20 lbs. longan fruits and one guy told me that I can't walk around the nursery. They put the fruits in the planter on the scale and subtract 1lb for the planter, but the planter actually weights more than 2 lbs. read more

Came upon this nursery on an online search for nurseries that sold fruit trees. Had high hopes as Google reviews seemed positive. Upon arrival, it almost seemed like a residential home, which was fine by me. Walked towards signs of nursery and finally was able to see someone that looked like a worker eating mangoes, listening to music. Asked him if he worked here and if I can get some help and he just said "what do you want?" I told him that I'm looking to buy a variety of fruit trees as I'm renovating my backyard and he said again in a condescending tone "what do you want?" I was very off put by his tone of voice but tried once more, letting him know that I would like some recommendations for my area as I'm not very familiar with what would grow well in my weather. He was just straight up rude, telling me to just go look around if I wanted to, and he can tell me the price, but anything related to orange trees are over $3,500. I thought maybe he was the owner as I didn't think any worker would talk this way to a customer, but he said the owner comes tomorrow. To be honest, I don't know how this place stays in business with customer service like that. Rude customer service, condescending, expensive plants/trees, and Did I mention rude? Feeling like I wasted my time, I googled a nearby nursery that was 5 minutes away and decided to stop by as I drove about 45 min to get here in the first place. New place was definitely a hidden gem and it seems like all the locals come here. Very friendly, answered all questions plus more, prices were about half the cost and had free delivery for orders above a certain price point. But price is besides the point, I would buy from this place even if it was more expensive than the nursery I'm writing the review about. I would definitely avoid going here, as there are plenty of nurseries that care about its customers. read more

Horrible service. I have many fruit trees and am an avid gardener. I purchased a tree here which died a few months later. Almost every other tree supplier offers a one year warranty and the big box stores especially - Perry refused to offer an concession - his solution was to overcharge me for another one. This weekend I ventured to Vista to select some fruit trees for my garden. I had heard about this nursery from friends/neighbors who recommended this nursery based on a great experience they had while looking for some unusual and hard-to-find trees that I'd never heard of -- but said they also had many trees that I (unseasoned gardener) would be super happy with. And they were right! I was glad that I got there early since it was shaping up to be a very hot day. There is limited parking, but the unbelievable selection more than made up for that. I was searching for apricot, avocado and citrus trees and I had no idea there were so many varieties. The staff was extremely helpful and had great recommendations on what would grow nicely on my property. I had no idea that I could grow mangos and guavas here in San Diego! So, I expanded my original plan to include a few trees that I hadn't planned on purchasing. The prices were more than reasonable, considering the sizes that they had. I mainly purchased smaller sizes (mostly 15-gallon under $100/per) which are still much larger than what I saw at Home Depot and definitely worth it as I expect to have fruit within a short time. They also had some HUGE trees in 45-gallon and 65-gallon sizes, but they were a bit out of my price range -- payoff is fruit right away from these mature trees. Oh well, I will need to be patient. Once I get these trees situated, I will definitely be back to complete my garden with some exotic items. Maybe a Passion Fruit or Dragon Fruit tree? Very rude. Not accommodative. Has to be their way or the highway. I wanted to get proof that the tree I was interested in buying had leaves on it before I drove the 3 hours to buy it. They would not take a photo of the tree. They would not let me pay for it in advance on the phone. They basically do not care about the customer. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience when purchasing tangerine fruit trees from Perry. 1st he did not quote prices to me during my visit, but totally claims that he did. So, make sure that you get the prices upfront, so you don't have the same experience that I had when I went to pay for the trees. I told him of the error of the 2 containers the same size and he made me feel comfortable that if it were not correct, he would be sure to correct it upon deliver. Just want to talk about delivery comments that Perry made stating that if I did not purchase 3 trees from him it was not worth his time to deliver them even thought I paid $275 for the deliver charge. The 1 tree in the largest pot that I purchased was over 10 feet tall the other 2 were the same height about 5 feet in the same size container. Needless to say, I disputed the increased purchase price with my credit card company. $3,500 vs $1,375 difference of $2,125 extra was charged and he offered me $500 for the dispute which I did not take from him, I told him I would split the difference. He has not responded since 9/20 to my e-mail. He states he told me the prices of the tangerine trees, so I hope that in the end he will lose at least this $2,125 amount from his would-be purchasers due to my review. I spent a total of $8,650 for 3 tangerine trees which is my good hard-earned money during a time when I am sure many are not spending since COVID-19 is lingering on for months. As a customer you would expect if 2 were in the same size container so you would think they would be the same price but not to Perry. Claiming that it should have been changed to a larger pot, but they had not re-potted plants that should have been transferred to larger pots. Age of his tree was a very big deal to him as well but his age of 20 plus years that I am unable to verify (but question: wouldn't that mean that the fruit production life is less than more?) and a long list of other statements that he believes that he stated to me. He spent more time telling me about his jewelry store in Carlsbad, Copper Canary than he did speaking to me about the trees, telling me how his daughter is working with him on this hobby turned into a business. I actually spent more time with his assistant that maintains his grow area than I actually spent with him picking trees since he was in the house most of the time and didn't answer the phone when I called him to let him know I arrived there at the nursery. I do think he has a great nursery that offers many choices and varieties, but I do not think that my purchase was fair. If he told me the price difference between the 2 smaller tangerine trees I would have definitely purchased the smaller for $1,375 instead of the other small on he charged me $3,500 that is the same size as my 5 year old fruit salad tree. Make sure that Perry tells you your price. Do not let him work you on the shipping either, I only wanted 2 trees, but he would not deliver to me he said unless I purchased 3. Good luck! read more

I was looking for 8-10 tropical fruit trees to add to my orchard, and the owner was very generous with his time and patient with my questions. Their selection is beyond compare, and the knowledge of the owner is impressive. Clearly this nursery is a labor of love and the result of a life dedicated to the nurturing of exotic fruit and flora. We are so glad that we found this nursery! We had terrible experiences at several nurseries, including at Moon, whereas our experience with CTFT was absolutely wonderful. They have a huge selection of beautiful, healthy trees (we didn't know there were so many varieties) and working with Solomon was fantastic. He is a wealth of information and is so patient and kind. We told him what types of trees we were looking for, and he explained all of the varieties to us and steered us to trees that would grow well in our yard. wow... I usually try not to give much credence to bad reviews and prefer to give a business the benefit of doubt but the attitude of the person I spoke to was horrible. It's as if they really do not need any new customers. Apparently they are so busy and distracted by the numerous transactions they are juggling and are so easily flustered by simple questions that they become agitated within the first 20 seconds. So I recommend using another nursery who needs the money and behaves commensurately , this business is doing so well with their current set of customers that they have the luxury of not wanting to spend anytime dealing with new clients. read more

California Tropical Fruit Tree Nursery is a very nice nursery that is owned and operated at a private residence. It is difficult to find, and there are no signs directing you to the location. It is by appointment only, except for Saturdays. The selection is vast and the trees are exquisitely maintained. The prices are higher than most nurseries I have been to, and there were no deals to be found. I bought 2 trees, which came out to be nearly $200, and it turned out that I was $3 short in cash. I asked the guy helping us if he could let me slide $3 and he kind of chuckled and made me pay by credit card. The guy helping us had good knowledge of trees, but his English was limited. I understand that this is a private residence, but a little more effort at making the nursery a welcoming experience would go a long way with me. read more

When I called to asked it is possible to get a replacement, the person who answered quickly blamed me for its death. I bought 40-50 fruit trees and found out later that I paid 30%-50% more than other local nurseries charge for the same trees. A horticulturist who visited my property stated that the quality of some of the trees was low also (several were unbalanced with most or all branches coming off one side- I was able to exchange one, but several have this problem. Several trees that were sold as a 15 gallon had small root systems which appeared to have just been moved from 5 gallon pots. At least a couple appeared the horticulturalist to have been pruned incorrectly.) I do not recommend buying from this nursery, especially if you aren't an expert at identifying the quality of fruit trees and knowing what they are worth. read more
