This is a hidden jam! For people like me who only focus on quality of wine but not beautiful ambiance or spectacular views, most of the wine tasting reviews on Yelp or YouTube are irrelevant for me. This small winery mainly focus on Rhône style blends, has a lot of other interesting blends and single grape varietals to offer. We were there on Monday morning at 11am, the only group of wine tasting guest. It was the date right after the Paso Robles Wine Festival that ended on Sunday, so we were lucky to taste extra samples that were leftover from the day before. The original flight consisted of five wines - 1 Rose and 4 reds for just $30, which was considered very reasonable in Paso Robles. But we were given 4 extra reds from the leftover. Overall the wines were very good compared to most of the other Paso Robles wineries, particularly those common names that you could find in supermarket or wine shops. I really like their Rose ( aka "Pink" ) that consisted on 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvedre. It was very refreshing on nose and on palate, with good complexity and medium length of finish. The 100% Grenache that was fermented in concrete tank instead of in oak barrel ( it was not on the tasting menu ), was outstanding! It's pale in color and light in body as Pinot Noir, but it's elegant & refreshing on the nose and on palate. with round and beautiful lingering finish. The other "Grenache" on the tasting menu that was fermented in oak barrel, consisted of 93% Grenache and 5% Syrah, was fuller in body and complex on palate but I really loved the one using concrete tank. It's so unique and I have never tasted such beautiful 100% Grenache so far, not from US, Spain or France. The "Sympatico", which consisted of 60% Tempanillo, 22% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre and 5% mataro, was another stunner! It's beautiful on the nose and complex on the palate with medium+ finish. We were also given the Reserve Syrah ( not on the tasting menu ) to taste. It's spicy on nose, complex on the palate with beautiful and round finish, loved it! All the wines are not cheap but I think they are reasonably prices with high QPR, especially if you join their wine club you'll get 20% off. In fact we joined their wine club on spot as we all loved most of their wines. Their staff, Maury ( I hope I got his name right ) was super friendly, knowledgable and passionate about wine. He served us very professionally and was patience to answer all our questions. He also recommended ( upon our requests ) so other interesting/good wineries and restaurants for us, thank you so much Maury!

Tastings $30 be sure to pair with the cheese extra $20.

Winery is tucked away up on Pacific and quite relaxing. Weather couldn't be better and the wine is tasty. Recommend

After nearly 15 years of visiting Paso Robles wineries I finally found myself at Caliza Winery. Located at the end of a maintained, but not quite paved, road you'll find this hidden gem of a winery. Most of the locals know it well, and I've even had it scouted for quite some time. But the opportunity never presented itself to visit. We made plans late July to visit some nearby Paso Robles wineries, checking off my list of never-before-visited spots. We first stopped at Booker and then to Caliza. Both the aesthetic and vibe were a total juxtaposition. One that I appreciated. Caliza beckons a time in Paso Robles past. One where wine was approachable, affordable, and all estate. Where locals owned both the vineyard and winery and you'd see them all pouring for you. Caliza brings back memories of this Paso. Combined with their expert knowledge of the terroir and winemaking, Caliza is one of the best wineries in the area. When we arrived we were immediately greeted by our (now favorite) wine pourer, Maury. He guided us with stories, jokes, and all the knowledge and wine one could consume. It was blissful. While the tasting room and outside seating is comfortable and beautiful, don't expect a perfectly curated environment. I wouldn't expect it any other way. Definitely opt for the cheese pairing - they do a fantastic job sourcing cheeses including locally made. Our favorite was a cheese made by a local high school student! We've returned since then to taste and have had equally lovely experiences. So much so, we joined the wine club. Caliza is the real deal in Paso. Take that dead end road (wave to Booker as you drive by) and enjoy the delights Caliza has to offer.

Wine is most definitely a subjective thing. What I may find delightful, someone else may find to be terrible. I'm sure many a sommelier would disagree, but for the average person just hoping to relax with something pleasing to their palate, it's hard to review a winery just for wines alone. For that reason, I'm usually more interested in steering people towards friendly establishments with good atmosphere. And Caliza does just that. Located just off Hwy 46, but far enough down Anderson Road that it feels a bit more secluded, you'll find the small Caliza tasting room. Compared to some of the fortress like tasting rooms visible from the highway, Caliza is a boutique winery tucked away behind a curve in the road and surrounded by oak trees. It's the kind of winery that grew Paso into what it is today - casual, slower paced, and not focused on busloads of revelers jumping from tasting to tasting. We popped in on a Sunday afternoon with two dogs in tow (the patio is dog friendly) and delighted in being the only people there for part of our tasting. The inside tasting room looked to be a pretty simple bar setup with some artwork and merchandise inside, though most of our time was spent outside. Since we were the only people, we took our seats at some comfy patio furniture with a nice umbrella. Even at nearly 90 degrees outside, the breeze and shade made it quite comfortable. Our tasting was pleasant, with only one wine that wasn't much to our liking. We didn't have to keep going inside for pours, as the staff was happy to come pour on the patio for us since we had the dogs. Perhaps this wouldn't be the case if they were busy, but for slower days like our visit, we appreciated it. The pours were a touch slow because it was a bit harder for the staff to see if we'd finished a wine and were ready to move on, but with a comfortable spot and nice breeze, we certainly didn't mind. Overally a nice little find off Hwy 46 that is worth a visit.

I believe sometimes companies have off days, and employees may have a bad day, which can affect one's experience, thus I dont let one bad experience ruin a company's review. But when it comes to my CHILD, you best believe i will never forgive and forget or let our experience be forgotten. We visited this winery expecting a relaxing, family-friendly experience and instead left with our daughter crying after being scratched in the face near her eye by the owner's off-leash dog. What makes this especially frustrating is that the winery's own rules state dogs must be leashed, yet the owners' dogs were roaming the property freely. Our daughter was calmly petting one of the dogs with me standing directly beside her when the dog suddenly growled and scratched her across the face. This was completely unprovoked and witnessed by the owner himself, who said absolutely nothing afterward. No apology, no concern, no accountability. An employee later approached us and said, "Sorry, he's old and maybe didn't like that she was the same height as him, which made him react".....which felt less like accountability and more like an absurd attempt to excuse why a reactive dog was allowed to roam off leash around guests and children. We also observed the dogs behaving territorially toward other leashed dogs on the property, making it even more inappropriate that they were allowed off leash in a public setting. My father-in-law is a VERY well known, well respected, and prominent winemaker in Virginia and across the United States, if you know anything about wine, you know him. So lets say, we understand winery culture and hospitality, fairly well. Had something like this happened on his property, it would have been handled immediately and professionally with genuine concern for the injured guest.....especially a child. Watching the owner casually continue on in his conversation with whomever, and pet the dog like nothing happened while our daughter screamed and cried was honestly unbelievable. In my opinion, not worth the visit for the subpar wine, if you want to take your children/dog somewhere. The poodles were friendly to me, and other adults, until we saw their behavior to other dogs & then my child....The complete lack of concern from ownership after a child was injured was shocking. Frankly, they are fortunate we chose not to escalate the situation further. Parents should absolutely be cautious visiting here with children or pets. An off-leash dog with territorial behavior has no place interacting freely with guests. Absolutely shocked and the owner should be ashamed of his actions & response (or lack there of) to the situation.

Well, besides the obvious (the wine).... It was the.... ok you caught me!! We came for the wine! Yeah, we were staying at the Ava Hotel in Paso for my wife's birthday weekend (definitely check this place out if you are looking for a beautiful spot to call home away from home) And being that we were in wine country.... We wanted a nice outdoor vineyard where our kids could be outside, run around, and get all of their energy out all while Mommy & Daddy had our own little R&R time sippin' on the good stuff. And let me tell you, it was Good Stuff! When we first arrived at Sculpterra, we already knew the place was going to be a hit as the parking lot was hoppin. And apparently we weren't the only ones that got the memo that this place was THE PLACE to be as it was just a little bit off the beaten trail from where we started out... Approximately 6 miles from "Downtown Paso" (through the city limits, down the 'ol country back roads and suddenly we were in wine country!) Prior to heading to the vineyard, we did a quick pit stop at McDonalds for the kids so they had something they liked. As for me and my wife, we opted to get some of the local fare items offered on site, cause what goes better with wine than a yummy charcuterie board? I'll answer that momentarily! But wait, theres more!!!! Upon finding a nice little table outdoors to sit and relax with our wine chilled in a bucket of ice, there was suddenly music to our ears and Love to my eyes! Yes, there was lovely Live Music being played by a band and out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a food truck serving Mexican Food from a local Mexican restaurant. Remember earlier when I said what goes better with wine than a charcuterie board? Well, if you guessed a little Mexican Food, then you are oh so right, but only in moderation! So in order not to ruin the good vibes of the beautiful vino from Sculpterra, I opted for just one taco and a cup of their poblano soup and man was it fire. The soup was piping hot and it had a kick of spice that made me spice from ear to ear. As far as the wine, the vineyards vibe and the entire aesthetic of the grounds, Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Gardens (the vineyard was adorned with many abstract and contemporary pieces that are all photo worthy), this place checks all the boxes. The place is kid friendly as there is plenty of space, both indoors and out, with areas for the kids to throw a ball, run around, or even learn to play a g as a game of chess. A decent variety of Reds, Whites, & Blends are all up for grabs, so if you find yourself in Paso Robles with the fam or its just you and your hunny, definitely come check this place out and watch the miracle of them turning water into wine!
