At first glance, Calmate Cafe doesn't look especially impressive, and it's somewhat inflated, tourist-driven ratings may give one pause. True to its name -- Spanish slang for "calm down" or "take it easy" or even "chill out" it is a straightforward cafe with slightly elevated prices and genuinely excellent customer service. That service, more than anything else, is what drives its strong reputation. The space inside is large enough to accommodate some decent sized groups, but due to the lack of ventilation I opted for their limited outdoor seating. It wasn't the most ideal situation, as a sign fell on top of my table, a stray dog was sniffing around, and the next door space was undergoing loud construction. We still made it work, due to the graciousness of the staff and their willingness to stay open past 4pm. Their iced latte ($70MXN), double espresso ($55MXN), and mambo smoothie ($110MXN) was the right thing to order at the time, but nothing too out of the ordinary. The latte had a good amount of milk in it, so much to the point that I was unsure about any coffee. This place is cash only and the lack of additional IVA tax charges came as a nice surprise. When I'm back in PV, I'm definitely interested in trying their brunch. The chilaquiles, breakfast tacos look fabulous, though the rest of the menu seems a bit skewed toward the gringo palate. The ultra friendly staff make this place what it is, which is worthy of many future visits. read more

Stopped by here after working up an appetite on our morning walk. We sat outside under an umbrella that was the perfect amount of shade to keep us cool. Our waitress took great care of us. We were welcomed with a small plate of watermelon balls. I ordered the chilaquiles with egg and green sauce and my wife with the red sauce. They gave us picked jalapeños and two sauces for our order. Okok I love coffee and let's just say I was a bit disappointed with the coffee options in PVR. Out of all the cafes I tried this was probably the best. I went on my first morning as well as my last in PVR. It still isnt as strong as I'm used to having (very milky cappuccino) but itll be one of the better ones in the area. Let's face it, most of my reviews are about going to different coffee shops when I travel (or martinis, but that's another story!) I am a huge fan of finding different local coffee places when possible. It is so refreshing to escape the world of Dunkin' Donuts and convenience store coffee when traveling. All of this, I say especially for Calmate Cafe. This is by far the best coffee shop in the entire walkable neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta where we were. It is on a side street, so a little map was needed to find it. There are plenty of other interesting food options that you will walk by, but none of them have coffee. As you can tell by this photo, they had this delightful breakfast bowl that was so good I could've eaten two of them. Also, it is a very small shop, so eating outside was a nice option to people watch and enjoy the weather away from all of the touristy shops. Everything was served fresh and hot and promptly. I would put a pin in my map to make sure I came back here at least once if I returned to the area. *** Sidenote-there is a lot of concern about drinking water in Mexico. Not once did I even have a slight stomach gurgle from drinking any of the hot coffees I ordered. Salad was a berry salad with quinoa and bacon and that felt like a weird combination. Everything was really fresh though. Best French toast ever! The the bread they use is light and airy and they dip it in some kind of secret French toast sauce that when it Cooks up it's amazing. Muy delicioso! We walked up and snagged a table for 2 at 9:10 AM. We were greeted immediately and put in our coffee order. I liked the iced cafe americano with oat milk. They provided us with watermelon con tajin as a free appetizer, while we waited for our egg and sweet potato tacos (muy bien!) and poached eggs with pepitas and caprese. Nice ambiance. A little oasis tucked away in an otherwise not so scenic street. The plants create a nice buffer from the street if you want to enjoy your refreshments outside. The coffee was fresh and delicious. I got an iced latte with soy milk. They do not currently have sugar free options but very tasty. The food was delicious. There was the surprisingly delicious addition of hummus in the sandwich, which I would have never guessed I would have like so much. The fries were outstanding. We shared an order of the pancakes which were decadent as plated without the addition of syrup. Everything here was seasoned to perfection. The plate i ordered even included a garlicky spicy pickle.
