Well, the James Beard nomination removed one of my favorite restaurants from under the radar to damned packed - and they 100% deserve the kudos and the attention and the packed reservation calendar. I love this place. After every visit I have to forego pasta anywhere else for weeks. Nowhere in town compares. Their treatment of wild mushrooms is masterful. My partner and I scored a two-spot at the bar on a Saturday to celebrate and we loved it, as always. The service was just as attentive and friendly at the bar as at a table. The atmosphere there is cozy and intimate and feels very European. Bonus - you get a great look at other diners' meals. I've had the tajarin with morels in the past, blessedly, and got one of the final orders available, maybe the last for the night. It's always a revelation in how amazing simple, high quality ingredients can make a meal. The amount of morels is generous as well. He ordered the rigatoni with pork and enjoyed it very much. We started with a cauliflower and broccoli dish that would make anyone a cruciferous vegetable aficionado. I had the always wonderful browned butter bourbon drink and a twist on a Manhattan for dessert. He had the house Affogato and really enjoyed it. This place is always worth the time and the money. Well shit, no wonder this place is nominated for a James Beard Award. I'm literally still thinking about all the good food 24 hours later. It's actually shocking I've only just made it here because Ca'Lucchenzo has been on my to-go list for years. Lucky for me, my girlfriends planned a dinner to catch up and one of them chose this spot. Hot tip: make the reservation. Those go fassst! We went on the Tuesday night and it was full, with repeated table turnover. Delightful atmosphere. Very cozy, with warm tones, dimer lighting, and thoughtfully curated Italian'esque decor. Loved that there is a whole area where you can look onto the from-scratch pasta being made. However, that's over in the dining room and we actually sat on the bar side. There's maybe a dozen seats wrapped around their full-service bar, and then a small high-top tucked behind, where we sat. Our server, Malichai, new allllll of his stuff. When I tell you this menu is so clearly planned with immense detail, and changes pretty much daily, but this man knew every thing there was to know. We found that to be so helpful because as first timers it's hard to know what - and how many dishes - to choose. In the end, we landed on a handful of picks from the antipasti section, which we're all great shareable sizes. And then of course we needed pasta, so selected two of those to share as well. Can I recall what each dish was? No. Can I recall everything being extremely flavorful and enjoyable? Absolutely! From goat cheese and white asparagus, to creamy potato ravioli and the most insane/delicious focaccia of my life... we all noted how great every bite was. Oh and the drinks + dessert selection lived up to the hype too. I had a citrusy gin cocktail, and we finished with some sort of hazelnut chocolate cake. 10/10. My son and I came here for my birthday. It was restaurant week. I had a 4 course meal with carbonara being the main dish. I also ordered the pork loin for my son. The host was brilliant saw I was in a walking boot put down a wine box for my leg. Service was a big slow. The dinner was almost like 1 hour and 45 mins, there is quite some time between courses. I was so excited to try this place when I heard they had homemade pasta with a rotating menu so that there's always something new to try. First off, the focaccia was hands down the best bread I've ever had in my life. It was so soft with the perfect amount of seasoning/salt with olive oil for dipping. I had never had squash blossoms before and I thought they were light and flavorful. The homemade pasta dishes were both so good. What do you mean you haven't been here yet? Go make that reservation as they are usually booked out by at least a week. Can't wait that long and w ant to take your chances? Go right when they open as they usually have a few seats available. As for the best seat? I'm usually a bar eater, but the pasta bar is an experience to be had at least once, and dining room dining is superb, too. If the weather is nice, and there is a seat outside, all tables have an umbrella so take full use before it's closed up for the season. If you think you've had focaccia before, you are wrong. You won't know what impostor you've had prior to eating the one here. No one's going to judge if you ask for an extra order to go, too. Their menu changes one to three times a week, so I won't even try to specifically recommend something from the menu. Typically, whenever they have a ravioli or filled pasta option that seems to be the best. I do recommend going with at least one other person so you can share a few dishes. Dessert can be hit or miss so go with what your heart feels. Cocktails are always spot on. There's a brown butter old-fashioned that is always a table favorite. So is there Apperal spritz, dirty, martini, and other fun concoctions on their menu. You honestly can't go wrong there. read more

Overall a decent experience, but unfortunately it didn't quite hit the mark that I'd like it to First off the service was great: I went in as a solo diner and was seated quickly without fuss, although the spot where they sat me in was a bit small and along this wide countertop shared with other guests. That was fine ( I don't mind being near people) but the chairs were a bit too close and made me feel like I had to shrink myself and hold my arms in. The server was pleasant as well. Soft-spoken, polite man, which fit the overall relaxed but friendly atmosphere. The only thing I noticed was that he spoke in a bit of a rush, but it was a busy night so I'm more lenient. For food, I started off with the goat cheese crostone, which was fantastic. 5/5 warm, soft, fluffy bread with a great goat cheese and Calabrian honey spread that had both a nice complexity of flavors while not being too overpowering despite the sweetness of the honey and the savoryiness of the goat cheese. Everything balanced out wonderfully. Unfortunately, the main pasta dish I ordered, the Herb Maccaronara, was very bland and one dimensional, which was a shame because I was really looking forward to a bright and refreshing flavor considering how the restaurant seemed to pride itself in the localness of its vegetables. Whatever they used, it was blended and pureed with the sauce, and I couldn't really discern anything except for a faint earthiness. Not much pepper. Not much salt. I normally appreciate it when restaurants want to let the ingredients and naturalness speak for itself, yet I found myself regrettably disappointed by the combinations they chose for this dish, as it didn't highlight or elevated their respective elements. The maccaronara pasta itself was fine, a chewier version compared to other types, but would've benefitted from having something more crisp as an accompaniment to pair with the chewy texture. The dish did have peas in it but sadly it must've been softened by the sauce or noddles because it tasted mushy. Overall the main highlight was the sausage which added a brief touch of well-needed savoriness. The final dish I ordered was an affogato that came with chocolate ice cream and a shot of espresso. A nice cool way to end the meal, although I wish I'd the choice for vanilla instead. All this to say that I believe three stars is a fair scoring for my visit. I really would like to visit again, and Ca'Lucchenzo does rotate their menu often so perhaps their next batch will be better than the current one. read more

The food was WAY over priced, the menu was POORLY designed, we had to send our food back twice because it was cold and WOW the NASTY attitude we got from the owner was appalling, he scowled at us the entire time, staring directly at us like he wanted to fight us! it was really BIZZARE. We have been eager to visit this restaurant since we read about it in the local media over a year ago and finally got a chance to try it this week after running an errand in this part of town. We were NOT disappointed! The decoration inside the restaurant is pleasant and gives the impression of authenticity. Our server was quite cheerful and helpful. The menu offers a very reasonable number of choices to satisfy many. The explanation for each dish was fairly clear, although it would be even more helpful if description of each dish also uses symbols to indicate whether it contains ingredients that a significant portion of world population is intolerant of or allergic to, such as lactose or shellfish. I remember that the menu at an Italian restaurant in NYC not only uses symbols to provide this type of information but also explains that pecorino cheese is made from ewe milk and has less lactose. Since this was our first visit, we decided to order at least one dish in every section of the menu. -- From the Cicchetti section of the menu, we ordered Focaccia della Casa and Pickled Ramp Deviled Egg. The Focaccia was fluffy and rich with flavors and lots of olive oil - very different from the Focaccia we got elsewhere in the past, but we liked it. The Deviled Egg had a mild but complex flavor profile and was perfect for us to start the meal. -- From the Antipasti section, we ordered Agnolotti di Coniglio in Brodo (Rabbit-filled pasta in broth). The flavor was again subtle but very pleasing. -- The pasta dish we got was Maccaronara con Salsiccia. The pasta was perfectly prepared, and the house-made sausage and wild ramps created a memorable taste. It reminded us of the sumptuous pasta dishes that we had in Tuscany a couple of years ago. -- The main dish we shared was Branzino Selvatico in Padella. The skin of the wild mediterranean bass was crispy, and the fish was delicious. We ordered a similar dish at a well-known Italian restaurant in NYC about a year ago, but we thought that Ca'Lucchenzo's dish was clearly better. Ok so where to start??? I LOVE THIS PLACE! I cannot believe this is the first time I've ever been! The ambiance can be intimate and can be casual/hang out. This is in Wauwatosa. Parking right next to the restaurant. It doesnt say on the yelp page but I called and they do accommodate kids! They have high chairs and they are able to make a simpler pasta dish for a toddler's palate. I LOVE how accommodating they are! With a place like this, yes moms and dads, you can still go out to eat amazing food with your littles! So let's delve into the menu. They change some items around in their menu and the newest addition when we visited is the pasta with white truffles. Btw, they hand make the pasta in house and it is the most perfect texture. I was initially doubtful about my meal being completely meatless that I even requested to have a side of grilled chicken LOL. but our wonderful server insisted protein isnt really needed for this kind of dish, so i trusted his recommendation. I did not regret it! He also made it a point to inform me that the meal includes 7g of white truffles and honestly it was the most umami-ful aromatic decadent pasta dish I have ever had! I have to say I usually don't care for pasta, but THIS is a dish to EXPERIENCE! My husband ordered the veal and it was tender and perfect. They even allowed my MIL to substitute squid ink pasta to rigatoni LMAO. We had the deep friend gnocchi dough and focaccia for starters too. Semolina doughnuts are AMAZING, it came with honey and cream cheese and the panna cotta with red wine infused cherries is the most perfect way to end the meal, slightly tart, a little sweet, and of perfect consistency. Fabulous experience all around. The staff was so welcoming from the minute we walked in. We sat at the bar which was great as our server / bartender Jack was able to spend quality time with us explaining the menu and just having a great conversation. The menu is the perfect size - plenty of options and not overwhelming. The food was GREAT. My wife and I shared everything which was a great way to get a nice variety as it was our first time dining here. The focaccia is out of this world - so crispy on top and light and airy inside and bathed in fantastic olive oil. A couple of deviled eggs, the chicken liver crostini and the pacific barramundi sea bass crudo were a really good combo to kick off the meal. That said, the ravioli with ricotta and mushrooms and the veal chop with fontina and speck ham were the stars of the show (with the focaccia). First time here...definitely not the last. Should have read the reviews for Ca' Lucchenzo before we went . . . it would have raised red flags. Our friends wanted to go to this moderately priced hot spot, so we did. First problem, it is not moderately priced. As another reviewer stated, "The food is way over priced for what you get. And who charges for bread at the table? They do! Wow!" You see, individual items are priced reasonably. But to get anything resembling a meal, you must order bread, salad and entre separately, and before you turn around, the moderately priced meal amounts to $75. A cheap bottle of wine is in the $50's or $60's, with most well over $100 or more. They do not feature a house wine. Second problem, the menu. I would have appreciated a menu written in English, not Italian. I had looked up items on the internet to try to decide what to order. (I confess, I prefer simple foods. A burger appeals more than a laundry list of unknown and exotic ingredients.) The restaurant menu was in a TINY decorative font. I used my reading glasses, but the font was still too small to read. My friend brought up a magnifying ap on her phone and gave it to me. It helped a little. I figured "Cannelloni al Forno - baked pasta filled with sautéed mushrooms, leeks & fontina valdostana cheese, $28," might be OK. My Husband tried "Spaghettone con Cozze alla Marinara - steamed mussels, tomato, garlic, oregano, wild spring onion, toasted breadcrumbs, $29." We split a grapefruit salad with a few stray greens. No traditional green tossed salad available. Too common. He said his Spaghettone was not bad, but he was hungry even after he finished my third cardboard cannelloni. My meal consisted of three tasteless, flat, dry and hard filled pasta shells. I think a cheese had been melted on top and browned, meaning dried out and hard. I mistakenly ate two, and was somewhat sick when I got home. Cardboard described the dish well. Won't be back, but Ca' Lucchenzo is doing well without us, and I wish them well. Service and ambiance are good, and their parking lot is always full. Hint to the management . . . Invest in an optional English language menu with a plain, readable, LARGE font, and add a house green salad to your menu. For those of you making reservations, take a magnifying glass, remember it is pricy, and the menu a little weird. read more

We went conveniently during white truffle season and highly recommend everyone does the same Our waitress, Annie, was absolutely wonderful! Her suggestions were spot on and she was super knowledgeable about the menu and wines. We loved sharing a white truffle pasta dish with each other - it was a perfect amount for 4 people. The focaccia is absolutely amazing and the carrot salad was like Fall in a dish. I got the Stracotta di Manzo which was a red wine braised beef shoulder with polenta - it was a decently large portion and so delicious! Truly the epitome of comfort food. The pasta dishes are on the smaller side but packed with flavor. We also got one of each dessert and loved every bite. The menu changes all the time so you might not see the same things more than once which is both good and bad when things are this tasty! I had an amazing experience at Ca'Lucchenzo and will now be recommending it to everyone. The Fried Baccala was an amazing starter. It was light and crispy. The squid ink aioli was a unique touch. Don't be afraid to try it! For an entree, I ordered the Ravioli Doppio di Agnello e Polenta, which is a double ravioli of lamb and polenta, roasted shallot, parmigiano-reggiano. The ravioli was essentially two connected tubes of pasta -- one with polenta, one with lamb. The combination was splendid. Our server, I think her name was Annie, was spectacular. We ordered everything she suggested and there were no misses. Everything was delectable. The food was delivered quickly and fresh silverware was brought out with each course. The vibes are great as well. It's clean and airy while still being comfortable. There aren't very many tables, so make a reservation. Simply outstanding! Came in on a busy Saturday evening after calling for a reservation about an hour before we arrived and got a seat for 2 at the bar. This popular Italian gem pays intricate attention to detail in its rotating menu based on seasonal Ingredients, a majority of which are locally grown. Probably some of the best Italian food I've had in the Midwest. The service is fabulous and recommendations were made by our waitress with ease. I've heard about this restaurant for years and finally had the chance to go. I can safely say this is the best Italian restaurant in Wisconsin, and it isn't very close. From your first step in, the experience is great. Hosts are friendly, the restaurant is clean, and the staff is knowledgable. I had some questions about the wine menu and the person responsible for the list (maybe a sommelier?) came over to answer them and steer me in the right direction. The food specials for the night were recognizable but felt unique, and tasted delicious. The pasta dishes tasted nothing like boxed pasta and the restaurant was not shy about seasoning, which I feel is a common oversight when going out to eat. I have really mixed feelings leaving this review. The restaurant itself is very small and quaint but don't get there before your reservation time. We were hoping to have a drink at the bar beforehand but there was no additional seating available. They reserve seating at the bar and there isn't even standing room to do that. The waiting area is very small so having a drink with a group of more than two would be nearly impossible. There have very limited proteins on the menu, and not much flexibility in doing anything with substitutions. They use fresh ingredients and their flavors were very good. They also have an extensive wine list, which was very nice. We ordered 2 of the ravioli dishes, a pesto pasta, and mushroom risotto. All of them were great but the risotto was barely enough to serve as a dinner, especially for $32! I felt a bit cheated. The service was very good and you could see solid teamwork. Overall, it's was pretty darn good but based on the unavailability of the bar prior to dinner, lack of proteins, and the expensive small portion of the risotto, I don't think we'll be back. read more

We were able to quickly make a reservation (day of) from their website (through Tock). I definitely recommend a reservation as it was pretty full when we arrived. We had a party of 5, so did not opt to eat at the pasta counter (where you can sit and watch the fabulous food being made) but it looked very cool. You can book a table OR the pasta counter through your reservation. I loved the vibe of Ca'Lucchenzo! It was definitely elegant/finer dining but it didn't feel stuffy at all, just warm and inviting. We had several bottles of red and white wine that our very nice server talked us through. We opted to share everything with our group and I'm glad we did as everyone got to try a little bit of everything. We had an easy time finding some gluten-free options but note this is an upscale Italian restaurant, that is not a dedicated gluten-free restaurant so if shared cook spaces or potential cross-contaminants are an issue for you this probably isn't your spot. For our appetizers we got the goat cheese crostini, then went on to the arancini, and cod fritters. Crostini and cod fritters were super easy to share, arancini needed to be split in to 5 pieces but this was fine with us. Everything was plated super nice and nothing disappointed. For dinner we did the roasted cod (no gluten) and risotto (no gluten) as well as the pappardelle al ragú. I'm still thinking about it! Our 3 appetizers and 3 entrees were enough for the 5 of us to share and leave satisfied but not completely stuffed (ideal!). I was strolling through my photos and saw this picture (please see attachment) that I had taken of the food at this place about 9 months ago and remembered how phenomenal my dining experience was and so OF COURSE, I HAD TO SHARE. Like it is way too good not to. Also, why didn't I do it sooner? Alas, here we are. It was one of my best friend's birthday so we had reservations to go here. When we pulled up to the place, it was a small and quaint little home (from the outside) and to my surprise, it was actually a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be. We walked in and was greeted by the nicest lady. We opted to sit outside and the exterior reminded me of a very cute Italian style backyard. I literally had no idea what I wanted to order so our server made a few recommendations. I was OBSESSED with olives at the time so we ordered the olives to start off with. I'll be honest, I was not really impressed by the olives just because it was way too citrusy to the point where it tasted sour/bitter. Perhaps some people like that, for me it was just a little too much. For our entree, we ordered the rigatoni with Italian sausage which came with spinach mixed in and the cherry glazed braised duck. UMMMM. HOLY MOLY!!!! The duck was sooo flavorful and I could still remember how it tastes even 9 months later. I remember it being so tender, moist and flavorful without any fat on the meat. HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? Most of the duck that you usually find at restaurants are obnoxiously fatty but this duck entree was just created to the absolute perfection. Whoever came up with this cherry glazed was a genius. It offset the saltiness from the duck and it was just so good. Next up, the Rigatoni Pasta with Italian Sausage. This classic dish was really tasty as well. I love that they make their pastas fresh every day!!! This is the unique thing about this restaurant. You can totally taste how fresh it is and the rigatoni was cooked where the noodles were not too soft nor was it too hard. It was the perfect texture. Overall, my dining experience was phenomenal; a memory that I clearly still vividly remember. The food and service - 10/10. Loved every second that I was in that restaurant. However, I chose to give this place a 4 star because their menu constantly changes so if you come back, there may not be the same entree or dish that you are craving/ desired to order. We had a lovely dinner here. I wish I'd taken pictures of everything we had to eat. I'll share the highlights: The arancino is delicious and a must have. I'd recommend ordering more than one. The prosciutto di Parma was very good. The prosciutto was mild in flavor such that you could still taste the creamy cheese it's paired with. The insalata di carote arrosto was one of the best bites. Those carrots are so so good. The dates and olives are a nice contrasting bite to one another. Definitely order this one too. The goat cheese crostone was delicious but the portion was small (they do tell you this in advance of ordering). Our entrees, pictured below, were delicious. Our dessert was phenomenal (little fried donuts) and our after dinner coffee/hot cocoa were tasty. The service was great too - our server, Anthony I believe, was very knowledgeable about the menu and the ingredients used in each item. The atmosphere is very relaxing and intimate. Our waiter was incredibly knowledgeable and made wonderful suggestions for our group. The food was absolutely incredible. From the appetizers all the way through to the deserts, I was blown away. I wouldn't have thought something as simple as the focaccia tossed in oil would be so delicious. Went to Ca'Lucchenzo for a date night after hearing so many wonderful things about the restaurant, and it did not disappoint! The dining area itself is a great mixture of modern and cozy, definitely an environment I could sit in for hours. The staff was extremely nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. They gave you a great rundown of the menu as well as their personal favorites which was helpful for me as a first timer. The food was delicious and unique. I love a restaurant that consistently changes their menu, so I am extremely excited to go back in the future! 10/10 recommend! read more

We heard from multiple people this place was great so we gave it a try and it exceeded expectations! I loved my dish (a brown butter white wine morel pasta) and the service was super nice and helpful! It sounds like the menu changes pretty frequently and if you want a reservation our waitress recommended calling as opposed to booking online. It was very chill inside and if you sit at the bar you can watch the chefs hand make the pasta right in front of you, I will definitely be back soon everything we had was delicious! They change their ingredients with whatever is in season and our waitress mentioned they don't freeze anything besides their ice cream and that attention to detail for sure came out in our food, we loved everything! read more

I really enjoyed my visit here, and the homemade pasta was excellent. Reason I didn't give them a 4 stars is because the portion sizes were a tad bit small, and the two men I ate with ended up ordering an additional entree to share after seeing how small the ravioli was. Been waiting to come here forever and we ended up getting a reservation finally! I immediately loved the vibe here.. I tried to do a walk in during summer time and it was super packed and we didn't get in at the time so we decided to do a reservation way in advance. We got seated right away and server came and helped us with drinks and recommendations for what food to order. They were out of the fish so we ended up getting the shrimp pasta, bread with cheese, mushroom soup and a truffle dish. While some of the dishes were amazing like the shrimp pasta, the truffle dish was too expensive and quite underwhelming in taste. I love truffle and appreciate a dish well infused with truffle flavors .. this was not it for me. The soup was pretty good and I think I would loved the fish which we didn't get to try. Overall I think if their menu changes in the future, I would like to give it another try someday read more

I'm so so happy that there is a new pasta restaurant in town and it might be my new favorite! Fonduta Arancino - fontina fondue-filled risotto fritter. This was a fancier, cheesier croquette-ish surrounded by a fresh salad. Tagliatelle Verde al Ragù Bianco - spinach ribbon pasta, white veal ragù, and parmigiano-reggiano. This was a little oily but I really enjoyed the spinach ribbon. The sauce coated it wonderfully. Spaghetti di Nero - squid ink pasta, steamed mussels, crab, octopus, tomato, white wine, and calabrian chili. if you enjoy seafood, this pasta dish is for you. The noodles were perfectly al dente. Stay up to date with the menu as pastas come and go! I'll definitely be back to try more pasta dishes. read more

First and foremost, Amanda is the best. She took care of us at the bar and made it feel as intimate and special as their finest table for two. She was knowledgeable and made great suggestions. Ca'Lucchenzo had been on my list of places to try since moving to MKE. It's always booked and a bit of a drive for us, so first off, apologies for taking so long. Upon arrival, we were greeted kindly and told we were in for a treat. Once the focaccia and Nebbiolo came to our table we knew this would be at least good. The gorgonzola-apple salad was delicious, arancino awesome, and the pastas were also lovingly prepared. We had gnocchi with fungi and cauliflower and cherry with pasta. After having ample time to digest my experience, I would give Ca' Lucchenzo the full five stars. Was it like being in Italy? Almost. But for Milwaukee, it was really a standout dining experience. It took me a while, but I finally made it to Ca'Lucchenzo just over a month ago. File this one away under "what took me so long?!" My friend offered to make a reservation, but she never confirmed with the email she received, so the reso wasn't booked, so make sure you follow through on that process. However, since their patio was booked and dining wasn't allowed indoors, they asked us if we'd like one of the tables on the sidewalk, which was totally cool with us. The wind picked up a bit, and it started to rain, and I guess that scared a reservation away or a table finished early, because they came to move us from the sidewalk to the patio, near the heater and under an umbrella. They didn't have to do that, but they did it. That is amazing customer service! We ordered their house-made Focaccia, giant veal & pork meatball, and Goat Cheese Crostino as our apps, and Tagliatelle Verde and Risotto with black truffles for our entrees, and finally added the Frittele di Semola (doughnuts with creamy stracchino cheese and Rare earth farms honey) for dessert. All of the apps were good, but the focaccia was our favorite, and I would call it a MUST-order! The Tagliattele Verde is made with spinach ribbon pasta with a white veal ragu and parmigiano-reggiano and was delicious, but the Risotto with black truffles was our favorite of the two and again, I'd call it a MUST-order. I am a big risotto fan and always look for it on menus, and this open was one of the very best I've ever had! It wasn't just because of the black truffles, but because the risotto was cooked perfectly and had the consistency that risotto should have. A chef once explained to me that when you lightly "shake" a plate of risotto, the risotto should flow live a wave. Their risotto dish changes often, but I'd say order the risotto, whichever option is being served that day. We didn't have room for the house-made doughnuts, but we aren't quitters, so we ordered them, and they capped off a great dinner with great wine! One of the owners came to our table to check on us and chat a bit between courses. After patio season ends, they will revert to carry-out and curbside only. I know that I will be back to support them, and I hope enough other diners do to help help survive this unusual time. read more
